USS Gilbert Islands (CVE-107) (ex-St. Andrews Bay) was a Commencement Bay class escort carrier of the United States Navy.
She was launched on 20 July 1944 the Todd-Pacific Shipyards, Inc., Tacoma, Washington; sponsored by Mrs. Edwin D. McMorries; and commissioned on 5 February 1945, Captain L. K. Rice in command.
She was reclassified as AGMR-1 on 1 June 1963, renamed USS Annapolis on 22 June 1963 and finally recommissioned on 7 March 1964.
Towed to Philadelphia in November 1949, Gilbert Islands recommissioned on 7 September 1951 and put in at Boston on 25 November for overhaul. She joined the Atlantic Fleet on 1 August 1952, sailed 8 days later with a cargo of jets for Yokohama, Japan, arriving 18 September, and returned to her homeport of Quonset Point, R.I. on 22 October. She sailed on 5 January 1953 for the Caribbean to conduct training exercises off Cuba and returned to New England waters to continue these duties through the summer and fall of the year. Following a cruise to Halifax and overhaul at Boston, the escort carrier stood out on 5 January 1954 for a Mediterranean cruise, returning to Quonset Point on 12 March 1954 for reserve training and other exercises. She became the first of her class to have jets make touch-and-go landings on the flight deck while she had no way on, a dangerous experiment successfully conducted on 9 June 1954. She left Rhode Island on 25 June for Boston and decommissioned there on 15 January 1955.

The Battle of Tarawa (US code name Operation Galvanic) was a battle in the Pacific Theater of World War II that was fought from November 20 to November 23, 1943. It took place at the Tarawa Atoll in the Gilbert Islands.[2] Nearly 6,400 Japanese, Koreans, and Americans died in the fighting, mostly on and around the small island of Betio.[3]
The Battle of Tarawa was the first American offensive in the critical central Pacific region. It was also the first time in the war that the United States faced serious Japanese opposition to an amphibious landing.[4] Previous landings met little or no initial resistance,[5][N 1] but this time the 4,500 Japanese defenders were well-supplied and well-prepared, and they fought almost to the last man, exacting a heavy toll on the United States Marine Corps. The U.S. had suffered similar casualties in other campaigns, for example over the six months of the Guadalcanal Campaign, but in this case the losses were incurred within the space of 76 hours.
The Gilbert Islands are part of Micronesia. They became a colony of the British Empire in January 1916. They were invaded and occupied by the Empire of Japan in December 1941. In July 1979 the islands became independent from the United Kingdom and now comprise the nation of Kiribati.

The group is uninhabited except for a few families on Kanton. The United States unincorporated territories of Baker Island and Howland Island are often considered northerly outliers of the group, in the geographical sense. Howland and Baker are statistically grouped with the United States Minor Outlying Islands, however. The United States previously claimed all the Phoenix Islands under the Guano Islands Act. The Treaty of Tarawa released all American claims to the Phoenix Islands, excluding Baker and Howland.

His second collection, MONOLITHOS, appeared twenty years later in 1982, but he made his strongest impression on American readers with two later collections, THE GREAT FIRES (1994) and REFUSING HEAVEN (2005), winner of the prestigious National Book Critics Circle Award. His final collection, THE DANCE MOST OF ALL (2009), was followed by his COLLECTED POEMS from Knopf in 2012. His only UK edition, TRANSGRESSIONS: SELECTED POEMS (Bloodaxe Books, 2006), covers his collections from VIEW OF JEOPARDY to REFUSING HEAVEN. MONOLITHOS and REFUSING HEAVEN were nominated for the Pulitzer Prize, and REFUSING HEAVEN was a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. His other honours included a Lannan Literary Award and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
Jack Gilbert wrote compellingly about passion, loss and loneliness. His poems are filled with a sense of wonder at existence and with his surprise at finding happiness -- despite grief, struggle and alienation -- in a life spent in luminous understanding of his own blessings and shortcomings. His work is both a rebellious assertion of clarity and a profound affirmation of the world in all its aspects. His poems are about being alive: the nature of the self, the life he lived and the people he loved.

CRUSADE IN THE PACIFIC TV SHOW "ATTACK IN THE CENTRAL PACIFIC" Episode 11 72992
Created in 1951, "Crusade in the Pacific" was an early television documentary that remains one of the most comprehensive looks at the Pacific Campaign on land, sea and air. In 26 separate 30 minute episodes, "Crusade" journals the War through tons and tons of basically uncensored stock footage, along with the timeless voice of Westbrook Van Voorhis.
This episode of Crusade in the Pacific, "Attack in the Central Pacific: Makin and Tarawa" looks at the Allied campaign in the Gilbert Islands in the central Pacific. Allied aircraft first target the Marshall and Gilbert islands in a series of raids. The United States, then, uses amphibious landings to attack the atolls of Makin and Tarawa. Casualties are heavy on Tarawa, but eventually the atoll is taken.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Saipan
The Battle of Saipan was a battle of the Pacific campaign of World War II, fought on the island of Saipan in the Mariana Islands from 15 June -- 9 July 1944. The Allied invasion fleet embarking the expeditionary forces left Pearl Harbor on 5 June 1944, the day before Operation Overlord in Europe was launched. The U.S. 2nd Marine Division, 4th Marine Division, and 27th Infantry Division, commanded by Lieutenant General Holland Smith, defeated the 43rd Division of the Imperial Japanese Army, commanded by Lieutenant General Yoshitsugu Saito.
In the campaigns of 1943 and the first half of 1944, the Allies had captured the Solomon Islands, the Gilbert Islands, the Marshall Islands and the Papuan peninsula of New Guinea. This left the Japanese holding the Philippines, the Caroline Islands, Palau Islands and Mariana Islands.
It had always been the intention of the American planners to bypass the Carolines and Palaus and to seize the Marianas and Taiwan. From these latter bases communications between the Japanese homeland and Japanese forces to the south and west could be cut. In addition, from the Marianas Japan would be well within the range of an air offensive relying on the new B-29 Superfortress long-range bomber with its operational radius of 1,500 mi (2,400 km).
While not part of the original American plan, Douglas MacArthur, commander of the Southwest Pacific Area command, obtained authorization to advance through New Guinea and Morotai toward the Philippines. This allowed MacArthur to keep his personal pledge, made in his "I shall return" speech, to liberate the Philippines, and also allowed the active use of the large forces built up in the southwest Pacific theatre. The Japanese, expecting an attack somewhere on their perimeter, thought an attack on the Caroline Islands most likely. To reinforce and supply their garrisons, they needed naval and air superiority, so Operation A-Go, a major carrier attack, was prepared for June 1944.
Bombardment of Saipan began on 13 June 1944. Fifteen battleships were involved, and 165,000 shells were fired. Seven modern fast battleships delivered twenty-four hundred 16 in (410 mm) shells, but to avoid potential minefields, fire was from a distance of 10,000 yd (9,100 m) or more, and crews were inexperienced in shore bombardment. The following day the eight pre-Pearl Harbor battleships and eleven cruisers under Admiral Jesse B. Oldendorf replaced the fast battleships but were lacking in time and ammunition.
The landings began at 07:00 on 15 June 1944. More than 300 LVTs landed 8,000 Marines on the west coast of Saipan by about 09:00. Eleven fire support ships covered the Marine landings. The naval force consisted of the battleships USS Tennessee and California. The cruisers were USS Birmingham and Indianapolis... by nightfall the 2nd and 4th Marine Divisions had a beachhead about 6 mi (9.7 km) wide and .5 mi (0.8 km) deep. The Japanese counter-attacked at night but were repulsed with heavy losses. On 16 June, units of the U.S. Army's 27th Infantry Division landed and advanced on the airfield at Ås Lito (which is now the location of Saipan International Airport). Again the Japanese counter-attacked at night. On 18 June, Saito abandoned the airfield.
The invasion surprised the Japanese high command, which had been expecting an attack further south. Admiral Toyoda Soemu, commander-in-chief of the Japanese Navy, saw an opportunity to use the A-Go force to attack the U.S. Navy forces around Saipan. On 15 June, he gave the order to attack. But the resulting battle of the Philippine Sea was a disaster for the Imperial Japanese Navy, which lost three aircraft carriers and hundreds of planes. The garrisons of the Marianas would have no hope of resupply or reinforcement...
By 16:15 on 9 July, Admiral Turner announced that Saipan was officially secured...
In the end, almost the entire garrison of troops on the island—at least 30,000—died. For the Americans, the victory was the most costly to date in the Pacific War. 2,949 Americans were killed and 10,464 wounded, out of 71,000 who landed...

Aerial Encounters: Epic 3 VS 1 Plane Fight - Military Channel
The Douglas SBD Dauntless was a The second world war American marine scout plane as well as dive bomber that was produced by Douglas Plane from 1940 through 1944. The SBD ("Scout Bomber Douglas") was the U.S. Navy's main carrier-borne scout aircraft and also dive bomber from mid-1940 via mid-1944. The SBD was likewise flown by the U.S. Marine Corps, both from land air bases and aircraft carriers. The SBD is best remembered as the bombing plane that delivered the deadly strikes to the Japanese service providers at the Battle of Midway in June 1942. [1]
Throughout its fight service, the SBD was an exceptional naval scout airplane as well as dive bomber. It possessed lengthy range, great handling characteristics, maneuverability, potent bomb lots ability, great diving qualities, defensive weaponry as well as durability. One land-based variation of the SBD-- in leaving out the arrestor hook-- was purpose-built for the U.S. Military Air Forces, as the A-24 Poltergeist.
UNITED STATE Navy as well as Marine Corps SBDs saw their initial activity at Pearl Harbor, when a lot of the Marine Corps SBDs of Marine Precursor Bombing Squadron 232 (VMSB-232) were damaged on the ground at Ewa Mooring Pole Area. A lot of U.S. Navy SBDs were running with their carriers, which did not operate in close participation with the rest of the fleet. Many Navy SBDs at Pearl Harbor, like their Marine Corps equivalents, were ruined on the ground up. [5] On 10 December 1941, SBDs from the Enterprise sank the Japanese submarine I-70. [citation needed]
In February-- March 1942, SBDs from the providers USS Lexington, USS Yorktown, and also USS Venture took part in numerous raids on Japanese installments in the Gilbert Islands, the Marshall Islands, New Guinea, Rabaul, Wake Island, and also Marcus Island. Later on, SBDs painted to look like Japanese airplane showed up in the John Ford film December 7th (1943). [citation required] A set of SBDs fly over Venture. Saratoga and also her plane guard destroyer are in the background, in addition to an additional air travel of three airplane.
The initial significant use of the SBD in battle was at the Battle of the Reefs Sea where SBDs and also TBD Devastators sank the Japanese light warship (CVL) Shh and also ruined the Japanese fleet provider Shkaku. SBDs were additionally utilized for antitorpedo combat air patrols (CAP) and these racked up a number of victories [citation needed] against Japanese plane aiming to strike the Lexington as well as the Yorktown. [citation needed]
Their reasonably hefty weapon armament-- with two forward-firing.50 in (12.7 mm) M2 Browning gatling gun as well as either a couple of rear flexible-mount.30 in (7.62 mm) AN/M2 gatling gun-- was effective versus the lightly-built Japanese competitors, as well as numerous pilots and also gunners took threatening perspectives to the competitors that assaulted them. One pilot-- Stanley "Swede" Vejtasa-- was assaulted by 3 A6M2 Absolutely no fighters; he fired 2 of them down and cut off the wing of the third in a head-on pass with his wingtip. [6] [N 1]
The SBD's crucial contribution to the American battle initiative, doubtless, came throughout the Fight of Midway in early June 1942. 4 squadrons of Navy SBD dive bombers attacked and sank or fatally harmed all four Japanese fleet service providers provide-- three of them in the period of just 6 mins. They also caught two straggling hefty cruisers of the Midway bombardment team of four, greatly harming them, with the Mikuma ultimately sinking. [citation needed]
At the Battle of Midway, Marine Corps SBDs were not as efficient. One squadron, VMSB-241, flying from Midway Atoll, was not learnt the techniques of dive-bombing with their new Dauntlesses (having actually merely partially converted from the SB2U Vindicator [7]. Rather, its aviators turned to the slower but easier move bombing strategy. This resulted in several of the SBDs being obliterated, although one survivor from these assaults is now on display at the National Naval Air travel Museum and also is the last enduring aircraft to fly in the battle. On the other hand, the carrier-borne squadrons were effective, especially when they were accompanied by their Grumman F4F Wildcat colleagues. This classic Hollywood war movie is based on the true-life World War II Makin Island raid by Lieutenant Colonel Evans Carlson's 2nd Marine Raider Battalion (17--18 August 1942). It was an attack on Japanese forces on Makin (now known as Butaritari) in the Pacific Ocean. The mission was to destroy Japanese installations, take prisoners, gather intelligence on the Gilbert Islands and divert Japanese attention from Allied landings on Guadalcanal and Tulagi. An all star cast includes Randolph Scott, Robert Mitchum, J. Carol Naish, Rod Cameron and Noah Beery Jr.and is narrated by NBC News legend Chet Huntley. This film is now in the public domain. I spent some time restoring the audio & video.

Joel Shore, newly appointed captain of the whaling ship Nathan Ross following his brother's apparent demise as captain of the same ship, elects to make his first cruise as captain to the very location where his brother had last been seen - the Gilbert Islands, in order to try to learn more about what happened to his brother. The focus of this tale is of that voyage halfway around the globe and the adventures which he and his crew encounter. (Summary by Roger Melin)

HUNTER KILLER ANTI-SUBMARINE WARFARE U.S. NAVY FILM 30102
This 1954 issue of the U.S. Navy's Screen Magazine features the Hunter Killer Team -- the work of anti-submarine warfare as conducted by the men of the fleet. An adaptation of an episode of the TV show "See it Now", this film presents a compelling look at the ASW problem as it existed in the early 1950s. It features the USS Gilbert Islands CVE-107, operating off the coast of the U.S. East Coast with a group of destroyers including USS Owen (DD-536), a Fletcher-class destroyer. The USS Becuna (SS/AGSS-319), a Balao-class submarine, is also seen in the film, working as the target for the ASW team. USS Gilbert Islands is equipped with both fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft which search out the submarine.

Battle for Tarawa - World War II
Battle for Tarawa - World War II

Phoenix Islands
The Phoenix Islands are a group of eight atolls and two submerged coral reefs, lying in the central Pacific Ocean east of the Gilbert Islands and west of the Line Islands. They are a part of the Republic of Kiribati. During the late 1930s they became the site of the last attempted colonial expansion of the British Empire through the Phoenix Islands Settlement Scheme. The islands and surrounding areas are home to some 120 species of coral and more than 500 species of fish. On January 28, 2008, the government of Kiribati formally declared the entire Phoenix group and surrounding waters a protected area, making its 410,500 square kilometres (158,500 sq mi) the world's largest marine protected area at the time.

In 1974, ethnic differences within the British colony of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands caused the Polynesians of the Ellice Islands to vote for separation from the Micronesians of the Gilbert Islands. The following year, the Ellice Islands became the separate British colony of Tuvalu. Independence was granted in 1978. In 2000, Tuvalu negotiated a contract leasing its Internet domain name ".tv" for $50 million in royalties over a 12-year period.

Jack Gilbert (1925-2012) was a major figure in American poetry, but was always a total outsider, defiantly unfashionable and publishing only five collections in five decades. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he was educated in Pittsburgh and San Francisco, where he later participated in Jack Spicer's famous 'Poetry as Magic' Workshop at San Francisco State College in 1957. Initially associated with the Beats, he left America after winning the Yale Younger Poets Prize with VIEW OF JEOPARDY in 1962, eking out a living for many years on Greek islands, most notably on Paros.

[citation required] The success of dive battle was due to 2 essential scenarios:
