Phytophthora - Stop the spread
A group of over 20 organisations from the public sector, charities and the private sector have got together to produce two videos to help tackle the threat posed to our plant nurseries, gardens, woodlands and countryside from two devastating Phytophthora pathogens, Phytophthora ramorum and Phytophthora kernoviae. This film is aimed more at professionals who work in environments where the diseases may be present or that could easily be contaminated. It describes the diseases in more detail and offers advice on appropriate biosecurity measures to help prevent the spread. It may also appeal to those studying life sciences at college or university.

1 Introduction to Phytophthora
Jennifer Parke Ph.D., Associate Professor from Oregon State University discussed how water management and water treatment fit in to a holistic approach for managing nursery plant diseases caused by Phytophthora species. This presentation is part of the education program to promote water conservation co-sponsored by the Water Education Alliance for Horticulture (a collaborative program hosted by the University of Florida with industry partners), OFA - The Association of Horticulture Professionals, and the Florida Nursery Growers and Landscape Association (FNGLA).

Zoospore Discharge in Phytophthora sojae
This clip shows zoospores being discharged from a zoosporangium of Phytophthora sojae, an Oomycete fungus that causes root and stem rot of soybeans. Footage was shot with a SONY DCR-IP55 digital videocamera on MMV digital tape via a videocapture unit. The 10X objective lens was focused on the zoosporangium as it developed from an infected root section immersed in water. The digital stream was captured using MPEG Streamclip. The clip is at normal speed. © Thomas E. Chase Clip may be used for educational or non-profit purposes free of charge, otherwise, permission must be obtained for use.

Wollemi Rot Trot [In Search of Phytophthora]
A five day bush walk in remote areas of the Wollemi National Park. Sixteen volunteers collected hundreds of soil samples in some of the most rugged areas of this National Park as part of a National Parks and Wildlife [NSW] research project. The project aimed to determine the extent of the spread of Phytophthora into the most remote areas of the Park. Phytophthora root rot, a form of 'dieback', is a disease that affects many native plants and ecosystems, important crops and horticultural plants. The famous and very ancient Wollemi Pine is particularly susceptible. The research project hopes to identify ways of reducing the spread of the disease through specific protocols that bush walkers visiting the area might employ in the future. The video features the amazing helicopter 'insertion' and 'extraction' of one of the four volunteer teams. Finding a suitable place for even a helicopter to land in such a rugged landscape proved quite a challenge.
