Top shot pan of ArcelorMittal steel factory STORYLINE Unionists at a steel factory in northeastern France said on Saturday they hoped the promise by French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault of no layoffs and new investment would hold true. Ayrault announced on Friday that there would be no redundancies at the blast furnace site in Florange, which has become a symbol for maintaining jobs in a tough economic climate. Instead, steel company ArcelorMittal has promised a 180 (m) million euro (233.75 (m) million US dollar) investment and the government will modernise it with an eco-friendly project. The announcement by Ayrault capped months of tension over the future of the site at Florange where the jobs of more than 600 people were at stake. "The basics that we have been fighting for since the beginning of the crisis are being upheld: not a single layoff, no layoff plan, investments," said Fran�ois Pagano of the CFE-CGC union at the ArcelorMittal factory. The prime minister put to rest rumours the government would nationalise the site. However, some union representatives remained sceptical. The plan calls for an investment by ArcelorMittal of 180 (m) million euros (234 (m) million US dollars) over five years.
