Since migrating to Sydney from Mumbai in 2000, Praful Desai has maintained economic as well as family ties with his homeland by investing in real estate in Gujarat, the business-friendly state that grew in prominence under then chief minister Narendra Modi. With Modi now prime minister, Desai says he has the confidence to invest elsewhere in India. He is betting on Modi's upcoming visit to Australia to strengthen ties with the near 300,000-strong Indian diaspora in the country, with a friendly tax regime for non-residents and options for dual citizenship on the wish list. Modi came to office in May with a mandate to create jobs and kickstart the Indian economy after a long period of sluggish growth. His signature 'Make in India' and 'Clean India' initiatives include targeting expats for investment.

After a gap of 28 years, Australia will host an Indian Prime Minister. PM Modi will deliver a historic address to a joint sitting of federal Parliament and also address a mammoth gathering of Indian-Australia diaspora in Sydney on November 17. The visit comes less than three months after Australian PM's India visit, when the landmark uranium deal was signed. Tony Abbott was the first head of a Government to visit India after Modi took over.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's public address in Sydney is expected to be similar to his Madison Square Garden speech during New York visit in September, where he was greeted like a rock star as he addressed a crowd of several thousand members of Indian diaspora.
India's foreign ministry has described Modi's historic visit to Australia as part of his efforts to 're-engage' Australia and its businesses. Modi will also be meeting top business leaders and politicians in Australia, to improve economic ties between the two countries.
Mr. Balesh Singh Dhankar, President, OFBJP Australia, speaking exclusively to Niti Central says preparations are in full swing with the launch of PMVisit.org.au as the Indian-Australian community is eagerly waiting to connect with PM Modi.
Talking about his discussion with Rory Medcalf of Lowy Institute, Balesh says that the India-Australia Nuclear Cooperation Agreement tabled in Australian Parliament is a step ahead towards better strategic relations. Balesh further adds that enthusiasm is high among the Indian community in Australia and the event will surely be a great success with PM Modi's charismatic connect to the people.

About 5,000 more watched the evening event on big screens outside. More than 200 Modi fans left Melbourne on a specially a chartered train dubbed the "Modi Express" to attend Modi's speech at Allphones Arena. Modi assured a visa on arrival facility for Australian tourists and announced a two-month deadline for the long-pending merger of OCI and PIO status to woo the Indian diaspora from whom he sought support for his ambitious Clean India campaign. Addressing a frenzied crowd, Modi took a dig at the previous governments saying while they were happy to make laws he was "happier to remove" them. Modi congratulated and complimented the Indian Australian community for working hard and making their "karmbhoomi" proud. He named prominent Indian-Australians who had excelled for Australia in sports and academics. Touched by the grand reception, Modi said he was honoured and humbled and will never forget this day. The Prime Minister also referred to economic reforms unveiled by his government and said India has become an attractive destination for investment. He also said FDI in Railways has been hiked to 100 per cent and hoped that Australian companies will invest in creating rail infrastructure in the country.
