Siena (Italian pronunciation: [ˈsjɛːna] (
listen); in English also spelled Sienna, the historic exonym) is a city in Tuscany, Italy. It is the capital of the province of Siena.
The historic centre of Siena has been declared by UNESCO a World Heritage Site. It is one of the nation's most visited tourist attractions, with over 163,000 international arrivals in 2008. Siena is famous for its cuisine, art, museums, medieval cityscape and the Palio, a horse race held twice a year.
Siena, like other Tuscan hill towns, was first settled in the time of the Etruscans (c. 900–400 BC) when it was inhabited by a tribe called the Saina. The Etruscans were an advanced people who changed the face of central Italy through their use of irrigation to reclaim previously unfarmable land, and their custom of building their settlements in well-defended hill-forts. A Roman town called Saena Julia was founded at the site in the time of the Emperor Augustus. The first document mentioning it dates from AD 70. Some archaeologists assert that Siena was controlled for a period by a Gaulish tribe called the Saenones.

Madrileños por el Mundo: Siena

Nos desplazamos a 1.283 km. de Madrid para conocer Siena. Una pequeña ciudad medieval situada en La Toscana italiana, declarada Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO en 1995. Nuestra primera madrileña, Pilar, nos recibe entre la multitud que ha acudido a Siena a contemplar El Palio, la carrera de caballos más antigua del mundo, que se celebra en esta ciudad todos los meses de julio y agosto. Pilar nos lleva al Monte dei Paschi, el banco en funcionamiento más antiguo del mundo, situado en el Castillo Salimbeni. Llegamos a la Iglesia de Santa Maria in Provenzano en la que se exhibe El Palio que se entregará al ganador de la carrera. Presenciamos la misa al aire libre en la que el obispo de Siena bendice a los jinetes y el “podere”, nombre con el que se conocen las casas típicas de Siena, en la que vive nuestra madrileña. Volvemos a Siena para recorrer sus 17 barrios, conocidos como “contradas”, cada uno de los cuales compite en la carrera del Palio con un caballo. En el Conservatorio de Música de Siena contemplamos las banderas de las 17 contradas. Recorremos la Via della Galluzza y vemos desfilar a las diferentes contradas, que demuestran su fuerza con sus cánticos. En la Iglesia de San Niccoló presenciamos como los caballos son bendecidos antes de la carrera y acudimos al desfile que las contradas realizan ataviadas con sus trajes medievales antes de realizar el saludo a las autoridades. En la Piazza del Campo presenciamos la histórica carrera.
Nuestra segunda madrileña, Remedios del Retiro, llegó a Siena con una beca en 1972 y ya no regresó a Madrid. Remedios nos habla de la cómo es el día a día en Siena. Con ella volvemos a la Plaza del Campo, donde se encuentra el Ayuntamiento y la Torre del Mangia, y visitamos una de las farmacias más antiguas el mundo. Nos acercamos a la Piazza del Duomo para conocer la catedral gótica de la ciudad con sus mosaicos, que sólo se pueden contemplar durante la celebración del Palio, y la capilla de la Madonna del Voto, la más venerada de Siena. Remedios nos lleva a la tienda de ultramarinos más antigua de Siena en la que se vende su postre tradicional, el panforte. Nos despedimos de Remedios en la Univesitá degli Studi, de gran prestigio en Europa.
Nuestra siguiente madrileña, Ana de Lavapies, es una mujer polifacética, que tiene su propia empresa de eventos en Siena. Nos recibe al lado del Palazzo Piccolomini, la actual sede del Ministerio de Hacienda y salimos de la ciudad para visitar una tumba etrusca. Nos adentramos en Monteriggioni, un pequeño pueblo desde donde los habitantes de Siena controlaban los avances de sus enemigos. En su muralla se han rodado películas como “Gladiator”. Continuamos hasta San Galgano para ver la Iglesia di Montesiepi, en cuyo interior se encuentra la Spada nella Roccia. Nos despedimos de Ana en el Restaurante “Gallo Negro”, donde nuestra madrileña trabaja como sommelier.
Carmen, de Batán, nos recibe rodeada de viñedos en Chianti, la mayor región vinícola de La Toscana. Visitamos los apartamentos rurales de su amiga Giulia y nos acercamos al castillo de Romena para conocer a la condesa Daniela Goretti de Flamini, que lo alquila para celebrar eventos. Llegamos a Arezzo y, tras una corta visita Hospital san Donato, en el que trabaja Carmen, entramos en la plaza Vasari, la gran desconocida de La Toscana. En esta plaza se grabó la película “La vida es bella” de Roberto Benigni y destaca por su belleza y alta importancia histórica. En Ortignano, un espacio protegido dentro de un Parque Nacional, visitamos el domicilio de nuestra madrileña y conocemos a su marido, un fiel seguidor de Telemadrid. Nos despedimos de nuestra madrileña en Subbiano en el Castillo de Valenzano, del siglo X, en el que se celebran bodas y eventos.

Medieval walls surround Siena, the most beautiful city in Tuscany. It is also proudly referred to as the 'Italian metropolis of the Gothic period'. Throughout the centuries, historic squares, palaces and churches have created Siena's unique character.

when I first saw the "Under the tucsan Sun trailer" I knew that I need to discover Toscana or Tuscany as the Italian folk says (Travel Channel Tuscany)... today after visiting Rome, Bologna, Genova, Sardinia, Florence, Verona, Venezia, Firenze, Pisa, Siena, Livorno, Padova, Viareggio, Lucca, Volterra, Chianti Barberino val de Elsa and San Gimignano ...so I decided to create this travel guide video for you! And I'm pretty excited to guide you through one of the most beautiful countries of Europe. In this video I introduce you Tuscany in Italy-The Charmed Land and the Dolce Vita Under the Tuscan Sun.
To sum up here are 10 things you should do in Tuscany:
1: sleep in a typical Tuscan Villa or Middle age like castle in Tuscany like "Villa Pitiana"
2: visit traditional italian cities like "Barberino val de Elsa" and enjoy the dolce vita
3: enjoy the view: like me in San Gimignano, Italy's Towering Hill Town
4: breath in the culture,make a guided tour in Florence (Firenze) and explore the Galleria dell Academia, make a walk on Piazza della Signoria and Palazzo Vecchio, check out the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore with the Baptistery, or discover the view from thr Campanile - Bell Tower. There are so many tourist attractions in Florence...you won't believe your eyes when crossing the Ponte Vecchio bridge. Oh and make sure to visit Boboli Garden and Pitti Palace formal seat of the Medici family. I fall in love with it as you can see in my video
5-6: Taste Tuscany: discover the Tuscan kitchen and delicious italian gastronomy. Tuscany Food and Wine Tours are famous...you should try tuscan receipts and attend a vine testing on the Tuscan hills..
7: Italy is the home of fast sport cars, like Maranello :Ferrari. My boyfriend chose to make a Lamborghini gallardo e-gear test.
8: Visit Pisa and take a photo holding the Pisa tower (Torre di Pisa)
9: Beach is waiting! If you are in Italy make sure to take some days to relax on the beach. We spent some time in Viareggio
10: realize that you need to come back to learn more about the 100 faces of Italy
