A Merchandise Manager selects products from wholesalers to be sold in a store. The responsibilities of this position can vary due to the vast amount of retail companies that require such an employee.

Industry experience is essential for this position, as the individual needs to have an intuitive understanding of what will sell. Roles such as this are usually obtained by someone who knows the industry inside-out, and has a proven track record of sales and a background in buying.

Some Merchandise Managers may manage purchase orders for one store while others might lead global operations where they manage purchase orders for multiple stores. The connecting thread is that they provide desirable goods that challenges their competitors.

A lot of the time they'll lead a team of warehouse workers to record, receive and move stock onto trucks or store shelves as it comes in.

Responsibilities & Skills

Prospective employers will look for a person with a background in retail. Many institutions offer formal education programs in merchandising, retail management, fashion co-ordination and promotion and retail buying which all is beneficial.

If working for a large organisation, the ability to delegate and manage people is essential to this role. The position also requires:
