Paavo Johannes Nurmi (Finnish pronunciation: [ˈpɑːʋo ˈnurmi] ( listen); 13 June 1897 – 2 October 1973) was a Finnish middle- and long-distance runner. He was nicknamed the "Flying Finn" as he dominated distance running in the early 20th century. Nurmi set 22 official world records at distances between 1500 metres and 20 kilometres, and won a total of nine gold and three silver medals in his twelve events in the Olympic Games. At his peak, Nurmi was undefeated at distances from 800 m upwards for 121 races. Throughout his 14-year career, he remained unbeaten in cross country events and the 10,000 m.
Born into a working-class family, Nurmi left school at the age of 12 to provide for his family. In 1912, he was inspired by the Olympic feats of Hannes Kolehmainen and began developing a strict training program. Nurmi started to flourish during his military service, setting national records en route to his international debut at the 1920 Summer Olympics. After a silver medal in the 5000 m, he took gold in the 10,000 m and the cross country events. In 1923, Nurmi became the first, and so far only, runner to hold the world record in the mile, the 5000 m and the 10,000 m races at the same time. He went on to set new world records for the 1500 m and the 5000 m with just an hour between the races, and take gold medals in the distances in less than two hours at the 1924 Olympics. Seemingly untouched by the Paris heat wave, Nurmi won all his races and returned home with five gold medals, but embittered, as Finnish officials had refused to enter him for the 10,000 m.
Struggling with injuries and motivation issues after his exhaustive U.S. tour in 1925, Nurmi found his long-time rivals Ville Ritola and Edvin Wide ever more serious challengers. At the 1928 Summer Olympics, Nurmi recaptured the 10,000 m title but was beaten for the gold in the 5000 m and the 3000 m steeplechase. He then turned his attention to longer distances, breaking the world records for events such as the one hour run and the 25-mile marathon. Nurmi intended to end his career with a marathon gold medal, as his idol Kolehmainen had done. In a controversial case that strained Finland–Sweden relations and sparked an inter-IAAF battle, Nurmi was suspended before the 1932 Games by an IAAF council that questioned his amateur status. Two days before the opening ceremonies, the council rejected his entries. Although he was never declared a professional, Nurmi's suspension became definite in 1934 and he retired from running.
Nurmi later coached Finnish runners, raised funds for Finland during the Winter War, and worked as a haberdasher, building contractor, and share trader, eventually becoming one of Finland's richest people. In 1952, he was the lighter of the Olympic Flame at the Summer Olympics in Helsinki. Nurmi's speed and elusive personality spawned nicknames such as the "Phantom Finn", while his achievements, training methods and running style influenced future generations of middle and long distance runners. Nurmi, who rarely ran without a stopwatch in his hand, has been credited for introducing the "even pace" strategy and analytic approach to running, and for making running a major international sport.

With the 2012 Summer Olympics just around the corner the whole world is getting ready to watch as new records are broken and new champions are made. Here's a preview:
The Ancient Olympics were much bloodier and deadlier than today with some boxers even wearing gloves spiked with sharp nails.
The first modern Olympics was held in 1896 in Athens, Greece and cost roughly $448,000.
The 2012 olympic stadium cost £537 million or $832 million...enough to send one person to the moon 11 times.
It takes 16 goose feathers to make each badminton shuttlecock, with the best feathers apparently coming from the goose's left wing.
Since the birth of modern olympics roughly 100 years ago Americans have won over half the total amount of olympic diving medals.
Although an Olympic gold medal seems valuable its really only worth about 450 English pounds (700 dollars), which is supposedly only half the price of the most expensive pie ever made. In case you're wondering you can find this record breaking pie at Fence Gate Inn in Lancashire, England.
Although it comes with its share of sprained ankles and broken shins, for every Olympic football match there are an average of 11 fake injuries.
London is the first city ever chosen to host the modern Olympics three times.
The 2012 Olympics will include females fighters in the boxing ring for the first time ever
Africa, South America, and Antarctica are the only continents where the Olympics have never been held although that will change in 2016 when Rio de Janeiro hosts the summer Olympics
At the first Olympics in 1896 the winners were crowned with silver. It was only later that the gold medals was introduced.
Originally 25.85 miles long, the marathon was extended to 26 miles and 385 yards at the 1908 Olympics in London where the race began at Windsor Catle and ended in front of the Royal Box in the stadium. Legend has it that the race was extended so that the Royal Family could watch both the start and the finish.
Olympic sprinters can reach speeds of up to 30 mph...that's breaking the speed limit in some neighborhoods!
The oldest Olympian ever was Swedish shooter Oscar Swahn who won gold when he was 60 years old in the 1908 olympics. In the 1920 olympic games in Antwerp he participated again and was crowned oldest Olympian at age 72.
The logo for the 2012 London Olympics cost 400,000 english pounds, which is apparently the same price it would cost to adopt a panda in China for 365 years.
The 1896, 1900, and 1904 Olympic Games all failed to catch fire, but in 1906 when the interim games were held the world all of a sudden paid attention. This was the first modern Olympics to include all of the theatrical aspects.
In order for a sport to be included in the Olympics it must be practiced by men in 75 countries on at least 4 continents and by women in 40 countries on at least 3 continents.
The gold medals in the 2012 Olympics will be the biggest and heaviest medals ever although they are mostly made of silver (only about 1.5% of gold)
Anyone caught streaking at the 2012 olympics will be fined 20,000 pounds.
The 2012 Olympics will have 10,500 athletes competing.
The modern Olympic torch has its beginnings in the the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. Hitler and his regime reintroduced the ancient concept supposedly for the publicity and propaganda.
The Olympic torch is designed for rugged terrain and was even taken underwater passed the Great Barrier Reef during the 2000 olympics in Australia
The 2012 Olympic torch traveled 8000 miles around the UK which is more than twice the width of the United States.
The most extreme measures ever taken to transport the torch ocurred during the 1976 olympics. It was literally beamed across the ocean by radio signal from Athens after which the signal triggered a laser that lit the torch.
For the 2012 Olympics over 4 billion people are expected to watch the opening ceremony. That's well over half of the world's population.

The Great Britain Olympic football team is the men's football team that represents the United Kingdom at the Summer Olympic Games (where it competes as Great Britain, currently branded Team GB). The team is organised by the English Football Association (FA) as the footballing representative of the British Olympic Association. The team only competes in the Olympic Games. In other international football tournaments, the Home Nations of the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) are represented by their own national teams, a situation which pre-dated the establishment of a GB team.
The team first competed at the FA organised tournament for the 1908 Olympics held in London, which was the first games that featured representative teams using players selected nationally (prior games in 1900 and 1904 used club teams). This team and the two that followed in 1912 and 1920 featured only English amateur players, and is seen by some as merely an extension of the English amateur team, set up in 1906 in response to the rise of the professional game. In this period the team won the gold medal at the 1908 and 1912 tournaments, although exited at Round 1 in 1920. A dispute between the FA and FIFA over the inclusion of professionals saw the FA withdraw from Olympic football in 1924 and 1928, and saw no football at the Olympics at all in 1932.
