Toke Antony Townley, born 6 November 1912 in Great Dunmow, Essex, died 27 September 1984 in Leeds, was an English actor.
His father was a vicar and he was christened John Townley, but his first name was then changed by his parents to the surname of an ancestor. After he left school he worked as a clerk in industry, acting in his spare time. He did not become a professional actor until his early 30s, first appearing at Birmingham Repertory Theatre. He appeared in many BBC television programmes during the early pioneering days at Alexandra Palace.
Between 1951 and 1970, in the heyday of the British studios, Townley appeared in almost thirty films, including Lady Godiva Rides Again, Doctor at Sea, The Quatermass Experiment, The Admirable Crichton, Carry On Admiral, Doctor in Distress and Scars of Dracula.
He went on to appear in many film and television roles over the years, including The Avengers. He was also an accomplished flautist and played the instrument on screen.
Many of his roles were country bumpkins, so it was an appropriate move when Townley joined 'Emmerdale Farm' as Annie Sugden's father, Sam Pearson, complete with cloth cap and collarless shirt, when the serial began in 1972. He appeared in over 800 episodes of Emmerdale Farm. Loved and admired by the rest of the cast of the rural soap opera, Townley was said to be a private person, living alone at a Leeds hotel. He died of a heart attack whilst still in the soap so his character was killed off.
John Jacob "Jack" Sugden is a fictional character in the British television soap opera Emmerdale. The character was originally played by Andrew Burt from 1972 to 1973 with a brief return in 1976, when he left for Italy to write a book. On his return in 1980 he was played by Clive Hornby. Hornby stayed in the role until 2008 when he was forced to take a break from Emmerdale due to illness. His last on-screen appearance was on 21 February 2008, and his absence was explained by the character visiting his mother, Annie Brearly in Spain. Hornby died of the illness without returning to the series.
Jacob and Annie Sugden’s son Jack is one of the original characters in Emmerdale. The Sugden family were the owners of Emmerdale Farm from the programme's early days. Jack and his younger brother Joe worked on the farm.
From the early days, Jack seems to be a very rebellious and self-righteous character, who cares little for others views. He also has numerous flings with different women and failed marriages, sometimes due to his infidelity. Jack is also an intelligent and articulate man but shown to be secretive from his family too. As time passed and Jack became a father, he has matured much more. He has firmly secured his roots in farming, which he originally tried so hard to escape from. Jack is still a man of principles and of pride, which can sometimes be his biggest weaknesses.
Michael Platt (b 23 March 1984) is a rugby league player who plays for the Bradford Bulls; he joined the Bulls in 2007 on a 2 year contract, which has since been extended to 2013. Platt's 1st choice position is Full Back but he has been more effective at Centre for the Bradford Bulls winning the 'Rugby League World Centre of the Month' for August.
Platt started his career at the Salford City Reds, making his début in Super League against the Wakefield Trinity Wildcats in the final game of the 2001 season at just 17. However he never quite made the grade and was released by the club.
Michael then signed for the Rochdale Hornets. His impressive début season was somewhat blighted by a broken jaw, although he did go on to win the National League's Young Player Of The Year award in 2004.
Michael then joined the Castleford Tigers, and helped the Tigers gain promotion in 2005. Despite the subsequent Super League season proving to be difficult in a squad which lacked quality, Platt still managed to score 7 tries. However after a heartbreaking 29-17 defeat against Wakefield in the final game of the season, Castleford were relegated.
Clive Hornby (20 October 1944 – 3 July 2008) was an English actor, known for his part in ITV's Emmerdale as farmer Jack Sugden.
Hornby appeared in various television productions including the Royal Air Force National Service sitcom Get Some In!, Gerry Anderson's Space: 1999 and Minder alongside George Cole.
He first appeared in Emmerdale on 19 February 1980 in what was originally a three-month contract. He took over the role of Jack in 1980 from Andrew Burt who left the show in 1976. During his 28 years on Emmerdale, he became one of the soap's most popular characters.
During the 1960s, Hornby was a drummer with The Dennisons.
Hornby was married to Helen Weir who played his on-screen wife Pat Sugden. They had a son, Thomas, before divorcing in 2000.
Clive Hornby died on 3 July 2008, aged 63. He had taken a break from the soap to battle a then unnamed illness. It was stated by The Sun that Clive Hornby died of hypoxia, a disease often associated with cancer, in a Leeds Hospice. His funeral took place on 15 July 2008 at Rawdon Crematorium in Leeds.
