Five years after it wrested its freedom from Ethiopia, the tiny state of Eritrea is struggling to get its economy back on the rails.
The fledgling republic has won praise from the U-S for its financial responsibility.
And there are signs that one of the world's poorest nations may be heading for a brighter future.
A new beginning for an old train.
This 1957 locomotive has just been repaired in Eritrea's highland capital Asmara and is on its way down the coast to pick up a journey that was interrupted two decades ago.
The railway was one of the victims of the country's 30-year struggle for independence against Ethiopia which ended in victory for the Eritreans in 1991.
In wartime, the Eritreans applied their resourcefulness to defeat a mighty army.
Now that peace has come they are using the same spirit and independence to rebuild their ravaged country.
Veteran workers, many of them in their seventies, have been recalled to restart ancient steam locomotives using the skills they learned before the war.
Five years after independence, the streets of Asmara are vibrant with optimism.
During the war years there was a curfew at dusk.
Today Eritreans stroll palm lined Independence Avenue passing newly-opened cafes, businesses and consumer goods shops.
Everywhere there are signs of rebuilding and refurbishment.
Eritrea has changed hands many times. It has been in turn an Italian colony, a British protectorate and then for three decades part of Ethiopia.
Now the Eritreans are making their own future.
SOUNDBITE:
Many of us believe Eritrea will be one of the success stories of Africa. The national sense of purpose, the discipline of its people, the determination and hard work which is evident in the countryside gives us great cause for hope. The government has also been financially very responsible in the use of resources, investing wisely in roads, micro dams, reforestation to try to rebuild the infrastructure of the economy.
SUPER CAPTION: Glenn Anders, USAID director, Eritrea
The war claimed more than 100-thousand lives and forced nearly 750-thousand people to flee the country.
Today hundreds of disabled former fighters live in camps, receiving only five (US) dollars a month.
Eritrea is one of the world's poorest nations with a per capita annual income of only 150 (US) dollars.
Most of the inhabitants live in the countryside scratching a subsistence living from the land. Drought is a persistent problem.
But costly foreign assistance has been turned down in favour of home grown know-how.
This dam is being built out of locally hewn rock rather than from expensive materials from abroad.
SOUNDBITE:
This is part and parcel of the reconstruction programme. In agriculture, the soil and water conservation is one of the projects we are really working. The Ministry is intending to construct 25 or 30 dams every year and this is all over the country. And as part of the reconstruction programme, I think we are really doing fine.
SUPER CAPTION: Andom Keflemariam, Agriculture Ministry spokesman
During the war years, trees provided a safe haven for guerrilla fighters and were cut down.
Now the hillsides are being replanted and the fields being worked.
Hopes of a better future are being nurtured as carefully as these green shoots in an arid landscape.

Ethiopian jets have dropped at least six bombs near a water reservoir outside a key port in eastern Eritrea, but missed their target.
No casualties were reported in the attack - the latest in an ongoing border dispute.
Shelling also continued for the third day along the Burie front, southwest of the Red Sea port of Assab.
SUGGESTED VOICE-OVER:
Ethiopia and Eritrea are fighting over disputed territory at various points along their one thousand kilometre border.
This stretch of border is near the strategic port of Assab, which used to supply landlocked Ethiopia with vital goods.
Ethiopia claims to have destroyed a vital water reservoir, and says a separate airstrike on a nearby Eritrean military supply camp destroyed armored vehicles, heavy artillery and military rations.
But Eritrean officials took journalists to the water station on Tuesday to prove that Ethiopia failed in its bid to knock out the scarce water supply to the arid region.
The station was up and running in full.
Eritrean officials have described the attack as a "warning" to indicate Ethiopia is capable of bombing Assab, which, until the border problems broke out, was an important commercial hub.
Assab port supplied Ethiopia with 80 percent of its shipments before war broke out over border disputes last May.
Since then, Ethiopia has moved its shipments to the port of Djibouti to the east, leaving Assab with little business.
But Djibouti cannot handle the volume of goods and Assab is vital to Ethiopia if it is to improve its economy.
Several weeks of border fighting and air bombardments in May and June killed 1,000 people before both sides adopted a United States brokered moratorium on airstrikes in June.
Low-scale fighting simmered for the next eight months, and troops massed on both sides of the border exchanging sporadic artillery until fierce fighting erupted in February.
Ethiopia is adamant that it is the victim of Eritrean aggression, and is only defending itself.

Eritrea is on a quest to build its nation with sweat, not debt. Though impoverished by its war for independence, Eritrea is rich with spirit, resourcefulness and knowlege. The country has made a vow to recreate itself with the expertise of its people, not foreign capital. Since winning their independence, Eritreans have turned their energies inward, building self-sufficiency and rejecting any outside help that does not move them further toward political and economic autonomy.

Talks to resolve the two-year border war between Ethiopia and Eritrea are to resume on Sunday, even as reports suggest that heavy fighting continues between the Horn of Africa neighbours.
Eritrea's president on Sunday claimed Ethiopia was continuing its offensive - even though it announced that the military operation had been completed a few days ago.
Isaias Afewerki said that despite the latest fighting, he remained committed to the peace process.
Praying for peace...
Eritrea's disastrous two-year war with Ethiopia and the million-dollar-a-day bill that comes with the battle is threatening the very resourcefulness of the small nation.
The latest fighting began on May 12.
Ethiopia sent its forces into Eritrea, saying its troops would remain there until they had retaken all disputed land along the border and broken the Eritrean army's ability to contest the matter further.
The fighting came to a halt last Wednesday when Addis Adaba announced it considered the war over, as it had met its goal of retaking disputed territory.
However, Eritrea on Saturday claimed that its neighbour had launched an offensive in the vicinity of the strategic Red Sea port of Assab.
Ethiopia denies the attack.
But its prime minister late on Saturday said that although the war was over, the Ethiopian army was justified to take retaliatory measures to repulse any Eritrean assault.
He also said Ethiopia would withdraw from Eritrean territory if an international peacekeeping force were stationed on land now occupied by Ethiopian forces.
Eritrea agreed last week to retreat from all land Ethiopia claimed.
And in an interview on Sunday, its president stressed that despite the latest developments, he remained committed to finding a peaceful solution.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Well, on the ground I think we are doing what we should do, defend our positions, save and preserve our manpower and frustrate all attempts of aggression on the other side, while at the same time we continue to commit ourselves to the peace process which is under way."
SUPER CAPTION: Eritrean President Isaias Afewerki
Before the latest fighting erupted, the economy of landlocked Ethiopia relied heavily on Assab port.
When Ethiopia's food crisis fell under the media spotlight earlier this year, Eritrea offered to open up Assab to receive food aid, but Ethiopia refused.
Stressing the strategic importance of Assab, Afewerki criticised the West for accepting Ethiopia's claims that it did not attack the port area.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"And now everybody seems to have settled for that. The international community is simply encouraging this aggression by being silent about it."
SUPER CAPTION: Eritrean President Isaias Afewerki
Talks to resolve the two-year border war were to resume in Algeria on Sunday.
Negotiations have been under way for nearly a week, with no major advances.
Sunday's indirect talks were expected to focus on proposals put forth to both sides concerning the withdrawal of both armies and the demarcation of the common borders.
The two countries have a poorly defined border about one-thousand kilometres (620 miles) long.

English/Nat
The United States has said that Ethiopia is prepared to accept its recommendations for resolving the border dispute with Eritrea.
It was not clear immediately if Eritrea had responded to Ethiopia's decision to cooperate with peace proposals advanced jointly by the U-S and Rwanda.
Ethiopian and Eritrean troops have been locked in a four-week conflict for control of disputed territory about 100 miles (160 km) southwest of the Eritrean capital, Asmara.
Eritrean fighters head for the border with Ethiopia.
For four weeks, these forces have been fighting with Ethiopia for control of disputed territory some 100 miles (160 km) from the Eritrean capital, Asmara.
It is a border dispute that has been simmering for years and last month burst into conflict when Eritrean forces took this area -- around the town of Badme.
Eritrean forces now hold the high-ground here and are keeping a keen eye on the movement of Ethiopian troops, not far from this point.
The battle is about lines on the map.
Eritrea has insisted that it is not occupying any Ethiopian territory.
It claims its troops are on Eritrean land as determined by colonial boundaries traced by Italy when it occupied Eritrea in 1885.
But Ethiopia insists Eritrea is illegally occupying its land.
It also accuses Eritrea of illegally holding a 415-square kilometre (166-sq.mile) area known as the Yirga triangle in northwestern Ethiopia -- plus a half dozen smaller areas along the border.
The situation in Badme when these pictures was taken was quiet.
The Eritrean soldiers who took the town on May 6 were biding their time.
But, elsewhere in the past few days, the fighting has continued.
On Wednesday, Eritrea accused Ethiopia of using tanks and heavy artillery in an attack on the frontier village of Ambesete Geleba -- 140 kilometres (87 miles) southwest of the capital, Asmara.
Hours later, Ethiopia accused Eritrean troops of attacks near two towns on the Ethiopian side of a natural border formed by the Mereb River.
While Eritrea's soldiers watch and wait on the border, the U-S and Rwanda are trying to negotiate a settlement.
U-S Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Susan Rice, said on Thursday that Ethiopia was ready to accept a joint U-S-Rwandan proposal for ending the conflict.
The proposal calls for Eritrean withdrawal from Badme to positions held before May 6; a complete demilitarisation of the disputed zone and the deployment of a small observer team.
There was no word as to Eritrea's position.
But all the signs are that Eritrea is prepared to go on fighting.
These recent scenes in the Eritrean capital, Asmara, show ex-fighters being mobilised to return to the front.
It seems that the former alliance between the two Presidents of Ethiopia and Eritrea, once rebel leaders in Ethiopia, may be consigned to history.
As rebels, they succeeded seven years ago in ousting the 17-year military regime of Colonel Mengistu Haile Mariam.
But Ethiopia's President may be regretting the day he granted Eritrea's President Isaias Afwerki self-rule.

RAINMAKERS - Introduction
(part 1 of 22)
Watch the whole 70 min. version here: www.rainmakersmovie.info
How do the day-to-day economics of our lives shape the character of our communities and our relationships with each other?
This has become one of the defining questions of our current historical moment.
RAINMAKERS is a film about everyday people in the Pacific Northwest who are trying to improve their communities by re-imagining their own economic practices. This film documents an unfolding history in the personal stories of our neighbors - folks who are grappling with big questions about money.
You'll meet a boy from Eritrea who becomes CEO for the day in his fifth grade class. You'll hear from community currency practitioners who have congregated in Seattle from all over the world to design a replacement for greenbacks. You'll step inside the home of 12 friends who share their paychecks in equal portions. You'll spend an evening in a church basement with African American business owners who believe that buying local will transform their cultural legacy. You'll settle into an after-hours discussion about how voluntary simplicity can help make sense of tough economic times. You'll witness the Coast Salish gift-economy known as potlatch. And more.
The individuals profiled in this documentary represent varying cultural backgrounds, political perspectives, and positions in life and do not share a singular point of view. What they have in common is an interest in how their economic decisions affect their communities. They've each made a unique commitment that puts their economic values to the test in a larger social context.
Through the juxtaposition of these stories, RAINMAKERS delves into the profoundly human dilemma of how we weigh our needs and wants against our fears of scarcity, our sense of moral obligation to others, and the promised benefits of community wealth.

English/Nat
Hundreds of Eritreans deported from Ethiopia during the border conflict were warmly welcomed home on Thursday by countrymen waving flags and singing patriotic songs.
Buses, army trucks and even tractors brought the 720 Eritreans back from Addis Ababa where they'd been held.
Ethiopia claims the Eritreans were deported because they posed security risks as many of them had military training or were raising funds for the Eritrean war effort.
It was a festive homecoming for the hundreds of Eritreans who were deported from their homes in Ethiopia.
Many of them are well-educated professionals who have lived and worked in Ethiopia for years.
In a well-organized ceremony, villagers lined the dusty streets, clapping, dancing and singing an insulting song about Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi.
The deportees had to leave the trucks and walk across the border back into Eritrea.
They carried few belongings and told harrowing tales of being hauled off to military camps from their beds, offices and in one case an airport.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"I was taken from my home on Friday morning. Then I was taken to the police station. At the police station I was registered and on Saturday evening I was taken to Addis Ababa. We had to stay at the police garrison and then everybody was collected there and then the deportation started."
SUPER CAPTION: Deportee
The mostly male deportees feared for the safety of the wives, mothers and children whom they were forced to leave behind.
Deportees says there are still hundreds of men aged from 18 to 30 who remain in Ethiopian camps.
Cups of sweet tea, water and a traditional flatbread were quickly served to the travellers - Alem Ghabrab described the conditions he was held as being like a "concentration camp"
Alem, who works at a printing press, says he suspected some Ethiopian official wanted his home.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"I want my family alive. That is the only thing I want from them because I will make it again."
SUPER CAPTION: Alem Ghabrab, Deportee
The deportations have been fiercely criticized by Eritrea as a "witch-hunt," but Ethiopia claims the deportees posed security risks because they had military training or were raising funds for the Eritrean war effort.
The deportees returned home as leaders of African nations began a diplomatic effort to resolve the 6-week-old conflict that has killed hundreds on both sides of the disputed border.

Eritrea leader Isaias Afewerki in 'robust health'
The Eritrean government has dismissed persistent rumours that President Isaias Afewerki is dead.
"Isaias Afewerki is in robust health," Information Minister Ali Abdu told the BBC.
He blamed the rumours, which began about a week ago, on groups wishing to destabilise the country.
Mr Isaias has led Eritrea since it gained independence from Ethiopia in 1993 - facing criticism for failing to implement democratic reforms.
Rumours on various opposition websites and on social media note that the president has not appeared on television for nearly a month, which they believe is unusual.
But Mr Ali said such concerns were "nonsense".

"I always see him every day - I saw him today at 9 o'clock," he told the BBC's Focus on Africa programme.
"Isaias Afewerki is in robust health - you can put this in capital letters."
He added that Mr Isaias was not going to go television just to "respond to this cheap propaganda".

ERITREA - "The Other Narrative" is a 25 minutes documentary brought to you by African Strategies an independent think thank organisation based in Asmara Eritrea.
The documentary is intendend to show the facts on the ground, with footage and editing of high standard quality of TV Broadcast. It consists interview conduct with professionals across multi sectors on Eritrea's national service program that have been serving the country and also with experts across various fields and sectors. It depicts the life of Eritrea's youth in national service, how they view it and one to one interview that demonstrates nothing less than thought leadership.
Eritrea is currently one of the African country that has achieved all three health Millennium Development Goals as of end of 2013 with data that is validated and verified by United Nations Agencies. In the documentary the efforts made for education, health, mining and other infrastructure projects, with its main focus on building a national human capacity and the youth in the national service program give an insight in the role they play in nation building.

EXCLUSIVE: VICE News Meets Barack Obama: http://bit.ly/1wT03Bi
The Islamic State, a hardline Sunni jihadist group that formerly had ties to al Qaeda, has conquered large swathes of Iraq and Syria. Previously known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), the group has announced its intention to reestablish the caliphate and has declared its leader, the shadowy Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, as the caliph.
The lightning advances the Islamic State made across Syria and Iraq in June shocked the world. But it's not just the group's military victories that have garnered attention — it's also the pace with which its members have begun to carve out a viable state.
Flush with cash and US weapons seized during its advances in Iraq, the Islamic State's expansion shows no sign of slowing down. In the first week of August alone, Islamic State fighters have taken over new areas in northern Iraq, encroaching on Kurdish territory and sending Christians and other minorities fleeing as reports of massacres emerged.
VICE News reporter Medyan Dairieh spent three weeks embedded with the Islamic State, gaining unprecedented access to the group in Iraq and Syria as the first and only journalist to document its inner workings.

Would You Stop discrimination? An actor portraying a veiled Muslim woman is refused service and racially abused in front on onlookers.
What would you do if you saw an act of injustice? How would you react to something so outrageous or tragic that it compels you to do something about it? Primetime: What Would You Do? Sets up elaborate realistic scenarios with actors testing real controversial subjects to see what ordinary people would do in these elaborately setup confrontations and pushed to act, or if they even act at all. What these ordinary people don't know, is that Johnm Quinones is recording and listening to every word. Based on the popular segments on ABC's 20/20, John delves into the implicit and overt actions prompted in real-life controversial situations. Psychologists are often given the chance to diagnose societal behavior and explain the theories behind the action or inaction. The show was intended to be a limited series, however the popularity of the show continues to push production with more scenarios that involve everyday people.

Coverage of Eritrean migration has been highly politicized leading to
much confusion on the issue. Journalists usually quote suspected
traffickers and/or activists with declared “regime change” agenda for
their perspectives on conditions inside Eritrea and these accounts are
then used to present a “human rights” case against the country.
The explanation then for “harsh” conditions inside Eritrea misses the
point by a mile. No reference is made to the no-war-no-peace situation
inside the country caused by Ethiopia’s calculated hostility, its
maneuvering inside regional bodies, and its refusal to abide by a
final and binding decision. Furthermore, preferential treatment of
Eritrean asylum seekers designed to drain Eritrea of its most
important resource, along with sanctions based on cooked evidence of
support for terrorism, and an intrusive and biased UNHCR stand
against the country’s government and people has greatly tainted the
debate on migration.
This documentary by African Strategies, in collaboration with the Red
Sea Institute, raises key questions that mainstream media deliberately
ignores and is a continuation of a series of documentaries that try to
present THE OTHER NARRATIVE on Eritrea.

Sunridge Gold Corp. (TSX-V: SGC) is a mineral exploration and development company focused on the advancement of the Asmara copper-zinc-gold-silver Project in Eritrea, which has now defined six NI 43-101 deposits on the project. A Feasibility Study on the four advanced projects on the Asmara Project was completed in May 2013, which demonstrated very strong economics. The Feasibility Study outlined a robust mining plan with Phase 1 production beginning in 2015 and Phase 3 (full production) achieved in 3 years.
Sunridge remains focused on acquiring a mining license in the next few months and expects to announce a non-dilutive financing plan shortly after. This will enable the company to begin mining operations for Phase 1 DSO (Direct Ship Ore ~16% copper) this year, which will provide a significant injection of cash within a few months of commercial production.
Under the plan Sunridge is working on, the company can be in production and minimize dilution. Once in full production, SGC will average 65 million pounds of copper and 184 million pounds of zinc per year.

Michael Hopley, chief executive of Sunridge Gold Corp (CVE:SGC), says he is delighted the firm’s partner has secured three key mining licences in Eritrea for its Asmara project.
Asmara Mining (AMSC), a joint venture 60% owned by the Canadian group, has been awarded licences encompassing four advanced deposits - namely Emba Derho, Adi Nefas, Gupo Gold and Debarwa.
These areas were all incorporated into the feasibility study for Asmara, a proposed copper-zinc-gold mining operation.

Eri-TV: The 4th Asmara Mining Conference opened in the capital under the theme "Meeting the Challenges for Sustainable Mining" in the presence of government officials, country and mining company representatives, as well as service providers.
In opening remarks, Mr. Alem Kibreab, Director General of the Mining Department, noted the prevailing challenges of the sector at global level, and explained that the smear campaigns targeting Eritrea's mining activities are but part of the ongoing baseless hostile activities. He further disclosed that 4 new mining projects are due to be launched in the year 2017, thus demonstrating the nation's potential to this end.
In the course of the meeting, the participants observed pictorial exhibition depicting the current mining and service business prospects in the country, besides the previous and ongoing mining as well as exploration activities.
The meeting in which more than 400 individuals are taking part and a number of study papers are being presented would continue until the 5th of this month, according to reports.

My name is Zahi Shaked
In 2000 I became a registered liscenced tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this "calling" in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, "glide" over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and "see" the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

Eritrea Demanded the Lifting of what it Calls Politically Motivated Sanction
The Eritrea government has once again stepped up the push for lifting of United Nations sanctions imposed on to the nation since 2009 Sudan Tribune reported. At the ongoing UN General Assembly meeting in New York, the Eritrean minister of foreign affairs, Osman Saleh, said the sanctions were politically-motivated, unjust and would have negative implications on the socio-economic welfare of the population.
“The sanctions must be immediately and unconditionally lifted. Once again no nation or people should be left behind”, said Saleh. The Eritrean foreign minister made the remarks while addressing the UN summit on the adoption of the post-2015 development agendas. In 2009, the UN Security Council slapped sanctions on Eritrea for supporting al-Qaida allied Islamist militants in Somalia, which continues destabilising the East African region.
