French troops attend school opening

Wide shot school STORYLINE: French International Security and Assistance Force troops were on hand at the inauguration of a renovated school near Kabul recently. The ISAF troops handed out stationery to Afghan pupils at the Zemma elementary school in the Kalakan district, 20 kilometres (12.5 miles) north of the Afghanistan capital. A French CIMIC (Civil Military Co-operation) team supervised the 38,000 euros (38,000 US dollars) renovation project, sponsored by the European Union. A local contractor actually carried out the work to rebuild the school, destroyed in the war, over a period of six weeks. Around three hundred students from the poverty stricken Zemma village attended the school, prior to the war. Following the building's destruction during the conflict, lessons continued in tents. Local student, Manzural Haq, said he was grateful to the French troops, as the other school in the district was too far from his village.
