Wowza! I'm excited to get on down to New Orleans for the Ponderosa Stomp this weekend and definitely one of the top of the long list of reasons why is to see Billy Boy Arnold live! Billy Boy was of course in Bo Diddley's earth-shaking / game-changing band in the early 1950s all the way up until his only release with the band - the canonical "Bo Diddley" / "I'm A Man" single and is thus undisputedl

The Dells "Oh What A Nite" Vee-Jay 204 A 1956
The Dells started singing in 1953 in Harvey, Ill. They soon got a contract with Checker. Originally called the El Rays, they released "Darling I Know" soon afterwards. Later, they moved to VJ records of Chicago, and their fantastic career really took off. In a matter of years, they were the top group. Their smash hit, "Oh What A Nite" is now one of the all-time hits of R&B; history. The group is composed of Jerry Funches, Michael McGIll, Verne Allison, Chas. Barksdale, and Marvin Junior. One of the most beloved of all the 50s groups is the Dells.
El Rays They practiced where they could: in school, in hallways, in a local ice cream parlor, on street corners (where, on one occasion, some music lover on high dumped a pail of water on them). Mickey McGill decided that the "El Rays" was a neat-sounding name; after all, it meant "the kings" in Spanish. [Insane Rant: No it doesn't! It actually means nothing at all in Spanish. You want "the kings," you've got to say "los reyes." End of Insane Rant.] In late 1953 or early 1954, they journeyed to Chicago to try out for Chess Records (Leonard Chess himself conducted the audition). Chess was impressed enough to set up a session.
On February 17, 1954, the El Rays recorded four sides: "Christine," "Darling, I Know," "Whing Ding All Night," and "So Long." On at least "So Long" (and possibly "Whing Ding All Night"), they're backing up Willie Dixon.
"Christine" and "Darling, I Know" were released, in May, on Chess' Checker subsidiary. Both were rated "good" on May 22, along with Chuck Willis' "I Feel So Bad," the Rivileers' "Forever," the Hawks' "Good News," the Strangers' "Blue Flowers," and the Bards' "I'm A Wine Drinker."
When nothing happened with the disc, Lucius McGill, who decided that he wasn't all that interested in show business, quit to get a "real" job. The five remaining El Rays crossed South Cottage Grove Avenue to see what Vee-Jay could do for them. (In those days, Chess was at #4750; Vee-Jay was at 4747.) Not only did Vivian and Jimmy Bracken's Vee-Jay Records welcome them with open arms, but also got them to give up on that clunky (and, did I mention, incorrect) El Rays name. Now they were the "Dells."
The Dells Almost a year to the day after their Checker session (February 19, 1955), the Dells recorded "Tell The World" and "Goodbye" for Vee-Jay. While "Tell The World" was a great way to start things off, I imagine that "Goodbye" was somewhat less than perfect, since it has still to see the light of day. When it came time for Vee-Jay to release "Tell The World" (April 1955), they backed it with "Blues At Three," a Count Morris instrumental that had been sitting in the can since December 20, 1953.
"Oh What A Nite," recorded on May 21, 1956. The bass on that session was Calvin Carter, Vivian Bracken's brother and Vee-Jay's A&R; man. According to Carter: "Chuck Barksdale left the night of the session to go with Otis Williams and the Charms ..., so I was left without a bass singer. So I sang the bass line like I fix an automobile. It was nothing I was proud of; it was just makeshift.
"Oh What A Nite" and "Jo Jo" were issued in July 1956. Stardom awaited. However, the record took it's time about taking off. The Dells were actually on the verge of giving it all up when they ran into the Moonglows, who told them the record was a hit in New York.
The platter was finally reviewed (both sides "good") on September 15. Other reviews that week went to Clyde McPhatter's "Thirty Days," the Platters' "You'll Never, Never Know," the Six Teens' "Afar Into The Night," the Delegates' "The Convention," the Barons' "Don't Walk Out," and the Chestnuts' "Forever I Vow." (Note that on September 8, the week before it was reviewed, it was already a Tip in Cincinnati. Such is the wonderful world of the recording industry.)
By the late summer, Chuck Barksdale had returned to the Dells, in time for their September 5 session. That day they recorded "It Takes Time," "I Wanna Go Home," "When You Kiss Me," and "Movin' On."
The Dells on stage On October 12, 1956, the Dells kicked off their first appearance at the Apollo Theater as part of the "New R&B; Stars of 1956" show. Others on the bill were the Pearls, the Velours, the Channels, the Solitaires, the Flamingos, Ruth Mc Fadden, and Titus Turner. On October 13, "Oh What A Nite" was rated a Pick Of The Week and on October 20, it was a Tip in New York.

FAIR USE, video is crap, sound is awful, no infringement (intended), no commercial exploitation
"Sherry" is a song written by Bob Gaudio and originally recorded by The Four Seasons. It was their first nationally-released single and also their first number one hit, initially reaching the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 on September 15, 1962. It remained at number one for five consecutive weeks, and number one on the R&B; charts for one week.
According to Gaudio, the song took about 15 minutes to write and was originally titled "Jackie Baby" (in honor of then-First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy).
At the studio, the name was changed to "Terri Baby", and then eventually to "Sherry", the name of the daughter of Gaudio's best friend, New York disc jockey Jack Spector. One of the names that Gaudio pondered for the song was "Peri Baby," which was the name of the record label for which Bob Crewe worked, named after the label owner's daughter."

Wowza! I'm excited to get on down to New Orleans for the Ponderosa Stomp this weekend and definitely one of the top of the long list of reasons why is to see Billy Boy Arnold live! Billy Boy was of course in Bo Diddley's earth-shaking / game-changing band in the early 1950s all the way up until his only release with the band - the canonical "Bo Diddley" / "I'm A Man" single and is thus undisputedly a rock'n'roll founding father. After that huge double-sided hit, Little Walter told Arnold that Leonard Chess didn't like him. So he went across the street to Vee-Jay records recorded his classic "I Wish You Would" as a solo act (you may know it from The Yardbirds or David Bowie versions). He waxed a few more excellent sides for Vee-Jay before getting the axe and moving on. Including this l'il pepper...
One of my favorites! And that's thee one and only Sunnyland Slim on that rolling piano and a very young Syl Johnson on guitar and his brother Mac Thompson (Magic Sam etc) on bass, and Reynolds Howard beating the skins! While Billy Boy huffs and puffs and blows the house down! Hypnotic hip shakin' blues at its finest! I got the rockin'itis and I don't wanna be cured!

You're listening to my daily addition to the New York Night Train Party Platter playlist. Each track here is recorded directly from the original 45 (no bootlegs, reproductions, etc) to give you an idea of what the real deal authentic vinyl sounds like. COME BACK EVERY DAY FOR A NEW FIX! Because the records pass so quickly at my dance parties, this channel is an attempt to stop and focus on one record at a time in hopes that it'll turn you on to the artists, tracks, labels, etc. I'm just hipping myself to a lot of these records for the first time as well - so you can view this as our journey to learning more about cool old records together! But mostly I hope this music moves you as much as it moves me.

Tracey Dey, born Nora Ferrari, is a former American pop singer in the girl group genre of the early and mid-1960s.
Career
Born in Yonkers, New York, she was attending college at Fordham University when producer Bob Crewe became aware of a demo tape she had recorded. Crewe signed her to his production company, Genius Inc., and had her record "Jerry (I'm Your Sherry"), an "answer" to The Four Seasons' "Sherry", which Crewe had also produced. Released by The 4 Seasons' label, Vee Jay, the record reportedly received airplay on New York radio but did not become a national hit. The follow-up, also on Vee Jay, was "Long Time, No See" but it failed to chart. Her breakthrough came at Liberty Records with "Teenage Cleopatra", a Beverly Ross (of Ronald and Ruby and cowriter of their hit, "Lollipop"; best known as by The Chordettes) composition. The song was a timely cash-in on the press and fan interest surrounding the Elizabeth Taylor film, "Cleopatra" and became a national hit. The follow-up, "Here Comes The Boy" (co-written by Eddie Rambeau, Bud Rehak and Bob Crewe, the writers of Diane Renay's "Navy Blue" smash) also made the national charts.
Dey released nine solo singles between 1962 and 1966, of which three - "Teenage Cleopatra", "Here Comes The Boy", and her version of Teresa Brewer's 1952 hit "Gonna Get Along Without You Now" - reached the Hot 100.[1] Although none became major hits, they have since been hailed as some of the best of the girl group era.[2] Many of her tunes were written by Crewe and Bob Gaudio, who was the keyboardist and main songwriter for The Four Seasons. Her records were released on Vee Jay, Liberty, Amy, and Columbia. Dey also released two singles with Gary Knight, a Crewe songwriting associate, as Dey And Knight. For several years in the mid-1960s, she was a regular television attraction on The Clay Cole Show
The majority of the material has been re-released on compact disc via a shared collection with Marcie Blaine but it is now out of print. Several tracks are available on various compilations: "I Won't Tell", can be found on the Rhino Records box set One Kiss Can Lead To Another: Girl Group Sounds, Lost & Found; "Long Time, No See", is included in the Castle Pulse box set, "Chapel of Love and Other Girl Group Gems"; "Teenage Cleopatra", is included on the Ace compilation, "Early Girls, Volume 4"; "Marching Home", can be found on the Ace compilation, "Where The Girls Are, Volume 5"; "Jerry (I'm Your Sherry)", is on Ace compilation, "The Answer To Everything: Girl Answer Songs of the 60's".
Until 2007, her whereabouts were considered unknown despite much interest and speculation from the fans of the rarer examples of the girl group sound.
Leaving behind the music business and the Tracey Dey moniker in the late sixties, Ferrari completed a Masters degree in Theater Arts at Columbia University and, for a while, taught college courses. She later began acting and writing screenplays and had a small part in the 2007 film, Reservation Road.
She is no relation to Susan Dey of Partridge Family and L.A. Law fame.

The El Dorados were an American doo-wop group, who achieved their greatest success with the song "At My Front Door", a No. 1 hit on the R&B; chart in 1955.
The group formed in Chicago in 1952, originally as "Pirkle Lee and the Five Stars". It comprised Pirkle Lee Moses Jr. (lead vocals), Louis Bradley and Arthur Basset (tenors), Jewel Jones (second tenor/baritone), James Maddox and Richard Nickens (both baritone/bass). When Moses Jr. got out of the United States Air Force in 1954, they changed their name to The El Dorados.
Vivian Carter heard them and signed them to her Vee-Jay Records label, making their first recordings in mid 1954. After a string of unsuccessful singles, they recorded "At My Front Door" (also known as "Crazy Little Mama") in 1955, and it rose to # 1 on the US Billboard R&B; chart, and # 17 on the US pop chart. Their follow-up, "I’ll Be Forever Loving You", also made the R&B; top ten in early 1956.
After Basset and Nickens left the group, they continued to record as a quartet. The original group split up in 1957. Moses stayed in Chicago and formed a new version of The El Dorados with John Brunson & members of another group, The Kool Gents. Meanwhile, Bradley, Jones and Maddox moved to California, and renamed themselves The Tempos.
The label dropped The El Dorados in 1958, and Moses Jr. subsequently toured with a succession of backing vocalists. In 1969, he resuscitated the group name with new members, at the same time as a former member of The Tempos, Johnny Carter, also toured with another set of El Dorados. The two competing groups merged in the late 1970s, and subsequently continued to tour and record as The El Dorados until Moses' death in 2000.
After Moses's death, Norman Palm, a longtime member since the late 1970s, took over and renamed the group Pirkle Lee Moses Jr's El Dorados, in tribute to his long-time colleague and friend. As of 2008, Pirkle Lee Moses Jr's El Dorados actively tours the Midwest, and the East Coast from time to time.

The album was recorded for Vee-Jay Records in early February 1959 in Chicago. The musicians include Paul chambers on bass, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Cannonball Adderly on alto saxophone, Wynton Kelly on piano and Jimmy Cobb on drums(except on Awful Mean, which features Philly Joe Jones.)
Arrangements and playing are consistently superb. Chambers plays bowed (arco) on some of the tracks, which is a treat. And on the tracks that feature Hubbard, Adderly, or both, they add significant depth and swing to the songs. In fact, Kelly makes sure that each piece swings. I love Jimmy Cobb's drumming and have been a fan ever since he has the drum chair on Kind of Blue. He is subtle with a beautiful touch and lays down a solid groove in conjunction with Chambers and Kelly. Frankly I had a hard time differentiating his playing from Philly Joe's on this album.
Obviously this album is essential for bassists. However, any jazz fan should enjoy it. Think of it as a solid piano trio on steroids. Adding Freddie Hubbard and Cannonball Adderly pushes it over the top in energy and drive.(By Mike Tarrani)

Hard to imagine a cloud in the sky with music this brilliant – early work from The Staple Singers, done in a bluesy blend of gospel and roots – with some pretty soulful undercurrents too! Most numbers are virtually acapella – but have this wonderful guitar from Roebuck staples – electric, but played with loads of delta blues inflections – in this way that was really revolutionary for gospel music at the time, and which has now been copped by legions of regional acts in the south! There's a perfect clarity to the record that really makes it a landmark – and the set's one of the best illustrations of the unique contribution the Staples brought to music right from the start.

Winner 1994 | WRKS-FM
There is no denying today that radio is in a boom period, with over 10,000 commercial stations on the air. At the same time, however, the Peabody Board has noted that, ironically, the number of entries from commercial broadcasters continues to drop. Happily, this program, produced by a popular station in New York, reveals the vitality, entertainment value, and information for which the commercial band has long been noted. Executive producers Bob Slade and Johnny Meadow have crafted a definitive documentary about Vee-Jay records, begun in 1953 by African-Americans Vivian Carter and Jimmy Bracken. Interspersed among the great hits of this vintage label are the recollections of former record manager Eddie Thomas and record producer Billy Vera, which co-exist alongside the infectious enthusiasm of Slade and Meadow. For providing an hour of priceless information and sheer fun, a Peabody to WRKS-FM for The Rise and Fall of Vee-Jay.

Wayne Shorter - tenor saxophone
Cedar Walton - piano
Bob Cranshaw - double-bass
Art Blakey - drums
Review by Scott Yanow - Allmusic
The second of tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter's three Vee Jay LPs, Second Genesis has five of Shorter's quirky originals plus the obscure "The Ruby and the Pearl" (from a '50s movie) and a pair of standards. Joined by a particularly strong rhythm section (pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Bob Cranshaw and drummer Art Blakey), Shorter sounds quite distinctive on the advanced hard bop material.

From: Doctor Ebbett's Vinyl Transfer... Enjoy!
In Los Angeles on 24th/25th August 1964, Jim Steck interviewed John, and Dave Hull interviewed all four Beatles. It is these interviews that are heard here.
Originally issued in America by Vee Jay records as a promotional release during the Beatles 1964 summer tour.
The chat through both sides is interspersed with some bizarre backing, consisting of sporadic drumming, random bongos, percussion and tubular bells. The sleeve identifies the culprits as, edited and scored by Lou Adler, percussion by Hal Blaine.

''The Soul Society'' is the debut album by bassist and cellist Sam Jones featuring performances recorded in early 1960 and originally released on the Riverside label.
Bassist Sam Jones' debut as a leader resulted in one of his finest recordings. On four of the eight selections on the CD reissue of his Riverside set, Jones is well featured on bass while the other four numbers find him playing very effective cello. The uncredited arrangements for the groups are uniformly excellent and there is solo space for cornetist Nat Adderley, trumpeter Blue Mitchell, Jimmy Heath on tenor, baritonist Charles Davis, and pianist Bobby Timmons. The repertoire is superior, too, with highlights including the debut of Adderley's "The Old Country," a fine jam on "Just Friends," Keter Betts' "Some Kinda Mean," Jones' bowing on "Home," and Bobby Timmons' "So Tired." Actually all eight selections are memorable on this highly recommended disc.(AllMusic)...

The Cobra label was founded on Chicago's West Side in 1956 by Eli Toscano. As a record-shop owner he had his finger on the pulse of what was selling, and a triumvirate of late-Fifties signings, Otis Rush, Magic Sam and Buddy Guy (who appeared on sister label Artistic), fired a warning shot across the bows of established Chicago labels Chess and Vee-Jay. The influence of Cobra Records was far in excess of its 34-single output. The evidence is here.

Vee-Jay International also released the record as a picture disc in 1987. The irregular shaped picture disc record was released in a clear plastic cover with yellow and black title sticker. The trail off area to the front side contains the number V.J. PROMO-202-7A and L27924 and to the back side lists V.J. PRO-202-7B and L27924X. Due to size limitations caused by the unconventional shape of the disc, the record contains edited versions of the interviews that appeared on previous releases of the album.

Beatles on the Vee Jay label. One of the most commonly faked vinyl records are those Beatles records on the Vee Jay label. I have a legit (but well worn) copy of the Vee Jay LP "Introducing the Beatles." One problem is that while Vee Jay used high-quality vinyl, they didn't make their own records. They relied on several pressing facilities to make their records, and each used whatever labels that they had on hand. Therefore, there are FIVE legit Vee Jay label variations alone for the single "Please Please Me".

The Pace Report: "Impressions of Curtis" The Impressions Interview wsg Binky Griptite

During the late 1940's black American music was undergoing a metamorphosis both on the commercial side as well as the changing of the guard from jazz music to what would become Rhythm and Blues. Many of the big bands that reigned during the first 25 years of jazz became at thing of the past for music listeners as trio based vocalists began to dominate the airwaves and juke boxes all over the country. Out went Tommy Dorsey and Benny Goodman and those legendary big bands and in comes a more soulful and more personal form of black music. Charles Brown, Ray Charles, Lowell Folsom, Nat King Cole, and Louis Jordan came on the scene and sang from the depths of the schools of the church meets the blues. Vocal groups became the new form of what these architects developed in a form of music style called 'doo-wop." Groups like Sonny Til and the Orioles, Billy Ward and the Dominos, The Flamingos, The Moonglows, and The Spaniels dominated airwaves. Rock and Roll took over the teenage record population and an explosion took off.
One of the most important groups that came out of this era were The Impressions. Formed in 1958 in Chicago, Illinois, The Impressions would segue from the 1950's vocal 'doo-wop' era to what would evolve into Soul music that still is apart of the rich and great musical landscape that makes up our rich American Roots Music.
The group originally began as The Roosters based out of Chattanooga, Tennessee formed by brothers Richard and Arthur Brooks and Sam Gooden. Meanwhile, back in Chicago, vocalists Jerry Butler and Curtis Mayfield sung together while attending the same church. Members of The Roosters moved to Chicago and began to make a name for themselves while seeking the attention of Chess and Vee Jay Records, two of the most important blues and rock labels of that period. The group auditioned both Curtis and Jerry to become part of what would now become "Jerry Butler and the Impressions."
The groups manager got the group signed to Vee Jay and their first record "For Your Precious Love" was a hit both on the R & B and pop charts.
In early 1960, the group changed. Jerry left to pursue a solo career and Brooks brothers left as well making the group a trio. Curtis, Sam, and Fred would become one of the most influential soul groups for their generation. With arranger Johnny Pate and Curtis's unique and powerful songwriting and production skills, The Impressions made an impact in Soul music even influencing other groups like The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Isley Brothers, and Bob Marley and the Wailers.
The Impressions were also one of the first groups to sing messages of hope and encouragement during the nations struggle with civil rights. Curtis penned some of the groups most prolific songs like "Choice of Colors," "Amen," "It's My Country," "People Get Ready," and "Keep on Pushin."
In the 1970's Curtis left the group but The Impressions continued to record and tour.
Today the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers are about to embark on their second renaissance as a group. They have a new record their about to released produced by Binky Griptite of the legendary Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings. The Impressions are backed by Binky Griptite and the Dee-Keys, a fifteen rhythm and horn section playing new material. The group also reunited with the legendary Johnny Pate, who arranged the original Impressions records and hits. Mr. Pate, who's 88-years-old, came out of retirement to work on their new album.
In this special edition of The Pace Report, I was honored to interview the founding members of The Impressions, Sam Gooden and Fred Cash. Also, vocalist Reggie Torian rejoined the group and are now in preparations to go on tour.
To order The Impressions new disc or to find out their upcoming tour dates, please visit them on the web at www.the-impressions.com.

Record Row - Was produced by WTTW in Chicago (PBS) and aired in February 1997. I happened to tape it. Lost my tape a few months ago and then discoved that Record Row had disappeared from the earth more or less. Found one copy in a small college's library somewhere in the south but not available for loan. Called WTTW and they disavowed ever having produced Record Row! Obviously no VHS or DVD's for sale! But this is an important historical document, which make you wonder why WTTW threw it in the can at all.
Record Row is the story of South Michigan Avenue in Chicago during the 50's and 60's when numerous record companies appeared all vying to record Black music...back then the nice term for it was Rhythm and Blues. Labels like Chess and Vee Jay. The story is narrated by Etta James and includes some very rare footage of people such as Jerry Butler, WIllie Dixon, and Curtis Mayfield who was already by then confined to a wheel chair. Lots of inside scoop on how white artists would cover Black written music immediately after the Black musicians released their records. Some stupid words by Dick Clark. And a clip of Pat Boone attempting to sing "Tutti Frutti" which is worth the price of admission. Also inlcuded is the history of VEE JAY, the first Black-owned label...they were the first to sign the Beatles and there is a lot of interesting information about how VJ managed to both screw that up and get screwed by Captiol. Eventually it went under due to mismanagement and other internal issues. Anyway of you're interested in the history of Rock'n'Roll this is a program you don't want to miss. Its too bad WTTW threw it in the can.

The Beatles' Story a documentary double album featuring interviews, press conferences, and songs by The Beatles. It was the Beatles' fourth release by Capitol and sixth American album, released in both mono and stereo. The LP was also released in Canada. Capitol released this album shortly after competitor Vee-Jay Records released Hear The Beatles Tell All.
The album contains brief stereo excerpts of their 1964 Hollywood Bowl concert, which was unreleased until May 1977 on The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl. Several voice overs dominate the rest of the record.
The album entered the Billboard Top LP's chart on 12 December at number 97. On 2 January 1965, the album reached its peak position at number seven, where it remained for four weeks before beginning its slide down the charts. Cash Box entered the album at number seven, whereas Record World showed the record peaking at number 13. Although not a million-seller, the album was certified gold, signifying sales in excess of one million dollars, in its first week; a very respectable showing, considering that the album was little more than an elaborately packaged documentary record.
In 1996, The Beatles' Story was being prepared for release on Digital Audio Tape (DAT), but when the format failed commercially, the plan was scrapped. As of 2011, it only has been issued on long-playing record making this one of the few American Beatles albums that has yet to be officially reissued on compact disc or any other format.
