My name is Zahi Shaked
In 2000 I became a registered liscenced tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this "calling" in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, "glide" over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and "see" the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

Qasr Libya is located about 50 miles to the west of Cyrene city. The name Qasr or Qaser Libya means the "Castle Libya". Some archaeologists referred to this location by the name of Qasr el-Lebia or Qaser Libia, and further suggested that it may have been related to the ancient village of Olbia, a settlement that was the seat of a Bishopric during the Byzantine period in classical Libya, situated along the road to Albyda. The city was attacked several times by various invaders, but it was however restored to its glory by the Byzantine emperor Justinian in 539 AD, who named it Theodorais, after his wife Theodora who was brought up in nearby Apollonia. Qasr Libya is mainly known for its 6th century Byzantine church, with a stunning mosaic floor panels, widely viewed as some of the world's finest examples. The theme is mainly mythical representation of the various spiritual beings of the pre-Roman era, as well as those of Christian symbolism, strongly indicating a time when both Paganism and Christianity were equally tolerated. The mosaic floor was discovered in 1957 by some labourers working on an American-sponsored project.

The Sahara is the world’s largest hot desert and one of the harshest environments on the planet. It is third largest desert overall after Antarctica and the Arctic, which are cold deserts.
At 3.6 million square miles (9.4 million square kilometers), the Sahara, which is Arabic for "The Great Desert," engulfs most of North Africa. The desert covers large sections of Algeria, Chad, Egypt, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Western Sahara, Sudan and Tunisia.
The Sahara is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the western edge, the Atlas Mountains and the Mediterranean Sea to the north, the Red Sea on the east, and the Sudan and the valley of the Niger River on the south. The Sahara is divided into western Sahara, the central Hoggar (Ahaggar) Mountains, the Tibesti Mountains, the Air Mountains, an area of desert mountains and high plateaus, Ténéré desert and the Libyan desert, which is the most arid region.
In the north, the Sahara reaches to the Mediterranean Sea in Egypt and portions of Libya. In Cyrenaica and the Maghreb, the Sahara experiences a more Mediterranean climate with a winter rainy season.
Major cities located in the Sahara include Cairo, Egypt; Tripoli, Libya; Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania; Tamanrasset, Ouargla, Bechar, Hassi Messaoud, Ghardaia, and El Oued in Algeria; Timbuktu in Mali; Agadez in Niger; and Faya-Largeau in Chad.
Climate and geography of the Sahara
The Sahara’s northeasterly winds can reach hurricane level and often give rise to sand storms and dust devils. Half of the Sahara receives less than an inch of rain per year, and the rest receives up to 4 inches (10 centimeters) per year. The infrequent rain is usually torrential.
The highest peak in the Sahara is the volcano Emi Koussi (11,204 feet or 3,415 meters) in the Tibesti Mountains in northern Chad. The desert’s other mountains and mountain ranges include the Aïr Mountains, Hoggar (Ahaggar) Mountains, Saharan Atlas, Tibesti Mountains, Adrar des Iforas and the Red Sea hills.

Eastern Libya Declares Autonomous Government, Tripoli Rejects Separate Barqa State
By ESAM MOHAMED 10/24/13 0
TRIPOLI, Libya -- TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) — The leaders of a movement for self-rule in oil-rich eastern Libyan unilaterally announced Thursday the formation of a shadow government, the latest challenge to the weakened central authority.
The announcement came several months after the movement, backed by some militias and local tribes, declared the eastern half of Libya to be an autonomous state, named Barqa, claiming broad self-rule powers and control over resources.
The central government in Tripoli had rejected the declaration. It had no immediate comments on Thursday.
Advocates of the self-rule in the east, who long has complained about discrimination by the government in the capital Tripoli, have been pushing for the reviving the system maintained under King Idris in 1951. Libya then was divided into three states, with Cyrenaica — or Barqa, as it was called in Arabic — encompassing the eastern half of the country.
Opponents fear a declaration of autonomy could be the first step toward the outright division of the country, particularly with the turmoil that struck in the aftermath of the fall of longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi.
The tension between the central government and eastern militias and tribal leaders has already disrupted the exports of oil. Eastern militias earlier seized control of oil exporting terminals, sending production plunging from 1.4 million barrels a day to around 600,000, robbing the country of its main revenue source.
Abd-Rabbo al-Barassi, the head of the newly declared Barqa government, said the aim is to improve distribution of resources and undermine the hold of the centralized system that has discriminated against their region.
"The aim of the regional government is to share resources in a better fashion, and to end the centralized system adopted by the authorities in Tripoli," al-Barassi said at a news conference in the northeastern town of Ajdabiya.
He dismissed accusations that the movement's leaders are only seeking to take control of the region's oil resources. "We only want Barqa's share according to the 1951 constitution," he said.
The new government is made up of 24 posts, which don't include the defense or foreign affairs portfolios, he said. Al-Barassi said the region will encompass four provinces, including Benghazi, Tobruk, Ajdabiya and Jebel Akhdar.
Since Gadhafi's ouster following months of civil war, Libya has been beset by lawlessness as the numerous armed men who fought against the longtime leader's forces formed into independent militias now vying for power and allying with competing politicians.
"The security file will be priority," Al-Barassi said. "It is a thorny issue leading to the chaos of illegitimate militias."
It is not clear how much support the new autonomous government will have in the country's east, though the movement's leaders have seized control of important resources. Officials in the central government have threatened to use military action against any illegal or unauthorized shipment of oils.
Meanwhile, a Libyan court on Thursday referred Gadhafi's son and more than 30 others to trial before a higher tribunal on charges ranging from murder to treason during the 2011 uprising, a senior prosecutor said.
Prosecutor Al-Seddik al-Sur said the Tripoli court also decided to appoint defense lawyers for Gadhafi's son, Seif al-Islam, and the late dictator's intelligence chief, Abdullah al-Senoussi. He did not announce a date for the trial before the Criminal Court.

Italy declared war against Turkey for commercial reasons and
to provide a neighboring colony for her surplus population. The
Italians believe the prediction of the great African Explorer,
Gerhard Rohly, who, twenty years ago, declared that the power
that rules Tripoli will dominate the Soudan. The proximity of
Tripoli to Italy makes its possession desirable.
The importance of the region was recognized by the ancient
Romans. Cyrenaica was very important. The five great com-
mercial ports were known as the Lybian Pentapolis, and existing
ruins of great works, aqueducts, dams, and large buildings reveal
its ancient prosperity. Sallust states that Leptis alone annually
exported forty million bushels of grain and paid a war tax of
twenty-five thousand gallons of olive oil. The Mediterranean
climate prevails, and though the great Saharan Desert ap-
proaches close to the coast there are large oases and fertile tracts
of land that would enable the country to support a population of
twelve million inhabitants, whereas it now has but one million.
This coast has a number of naturally fine harbors that have
been filled up with sand and ruined by neglect, but which could
easily be reclaimed. Such are Tripoli, Lebda, Misrata, Benghasi,
Derna, Mersa, Bomba and Tobruk. The trend of the coast brings
the Tripolitan ports three hundred miles nearer the trade centers
of points around Sahara, and the trade routes converge towards
Tripoli.
Ever since the Kingdom of Italy was united Italy has coveted
the opposite coast of North Africa. Forty years ago Bismarck
wrote to Mazzini: "The Mediterranean is indisputably Italy's
sphere of interest. The control of the Mediterranean should be
the constant goal and the controlling principle of Italian states-
men!" England had long possessed Malta and Gibraltar. In

1878 she acquired Cyprus while Austria took Bosnia. At the
Berlin Congress Bismarck and Beaconsfield offered Italy
Mityleni, Tunis and Tripoli ; but Cairoli declined, stating that he
wished to leave the Congress with clean hands. Other nations,
however, stepped in and took forcible possession. France inau-
gurated her Algerian imperial policy and acquired Senegal,
Tschad, and Tunis. France fortified Biserta on the Tunisian
coast and is now proceeding to peaceably acquire Morocco. Dur-
ing the Russo-Turkish war England offered to form a league
with Italy, Austria and Greece to maintain the status quo in the
Mediterranean, but Italy declined because she did not wish to
disturb her friendly relations with other nations. In 1881, when
France seized Tunis and broke the status quo, Italy claimed to
be too weak to make any serious protest, but, at the renewal of
the triple alliance in 1886, Italy complained that Germany and
Austria did not protect Italy from French encroachments in the
Mediterranean. Bismarck then is said to have negotiated a
secret treaty with England stipulating that Italy's interests in
the Mediterranean should be preserved. In 1889, however,
England negotiated the Soudan treaty with France defining
boundaries that encroached still further on the borders of the
Tripolitan hinterland. In a secret treaty in 1902, England and
France recognized Italy's claims to Tripoli. In 1904 France
definitely proclaimed Italy's prior right to take possession of
Tripoli under certain contingencies. During the Bosnia-Bul-
garian crisis Italy was supposed to take definite action, but Italy
hesitated because of England's relations with the Young Turk
government, but since England's attitude has cooled somewhat,
Italy has finally acted to be no longer reproached for neglecting
her opportunities. These diplomatic incidents explain the neu-
trality of European powers during the war.
The Turks had possesison of Tripoli since 1835, and the in-
habitants regarded Turkish rule as a blessing; they enjoyed
greater freedom and were subjected to much less burdensome
taxation than before. The protectorate of Tripoli was an ex-
pense rather than a source of revenue for Turkey. The expenses
of administration were greater than the revenue from harbor
dues and agriculture. The Turks relieved the people of military
service at first, but in 1901 universal compulsory military service
was re-established and occasioned some opposition, but this was

long since settled as a necessary feature of the government. The
alleged Italian claim that the country was misgoverned and that
intolerable conditions existed was not well founded.

Lissos has been an autonomous ancient town in Crete constituted since at least the classica era, but with certified surface traces of habitation (pottery fragments) already since the Minoan times. Its peak goes with the one of most Cretan towns of the Hellenistic era (323 - 46 B.C.). It is then reported as a member and seat (with a special gold coinage) of the Oreioi (a political coalition of federation of ancient towns at the geographic unityof modern East Selinon district). This federation was allied to Gortyna and played an important role in state relations of the time. Between 279 - 274 B.C. Lissos signed an alliance treaty with Magas, the deputy of Cyrene, brother of Ptolemy II Philadelphus, an inscription kept safe at Lissos. From the conditions of this treaty and the presence of cyrenaic didrachma in coin treasures of the area it is ensued that the federation sent mercenary troops to help Magas' operations.
According to the coins, the divinity mainly adored was Dictynna, though its temple has not yet been recovered. The spring of healing water, as well as the foundation of the sanctuary of Asklepios (3rd c. B.C.) brought to light by the excavation of N. Platon in 1957 - 1960, made it a reputed sanctuary of the Greek world. Habitation at Lissos ceased during the late antiquity (the early Christian era). In the 7th or 9th c. A.D. though it seems completely destroyed, never to be inhabited again. Still the religious character of the site has been preserved until the Byzantine period (churches of the Virgin Mary, of Haghios Kerekos) and to day (fete of H. Kerekos).
Except from the excavated sanctuary, plenty of ruins of public buildings, mainly of the Roman period are sown all over the valley.

The area of North Africa which has been known as Libya since 1911 was under Roman domination between 146 BC and 670 AD. The Latin name Libya at the time referred to the continent of Africa in general. What is now coastal Libya was known as Tripolitania and Pentapolis, divided between the Africa province in the west and Creta et Cyrenaica in the east. In 296 AD, the Emperor Diocletian separated the administration of Crete from Cyrenaica and in the latter formed the new provinces of "Upper Libya" and "Lower Libya", using the term Libya as a political State for the first time in history. This article is part of a series about the History of Libya and it is related to the Roman domination of the territory now called Republic of Libya.
After the final conquest and destruction of Carthage in 146 BC, northwestern Africa went under Roman rule and, shortly thereafter, the coastal area of what is now western Libya was established as a province under the name of Tripolitania with Leptis Magna capital and the major trading port in the region.
In 96 BC Rome peacefully obtained Cyrenaica (left as inheritance by the king Ptolemy Apion) with the so-called sovereign Pentapolis, formed by the cities of Cyrene (near the modern village of Shahat), its port of Apollonia, Arsinoe (Tocra), Berenice (near modern Benghazi) and Barce (Marj), that will be transformed into a Roman province a couple of decades later in 74 BC. The Roman advance southward, however, was stopped by the Garamantes.
