Maximum Rocknroll #391 • Dec 2015

mrr_391_cvr

It’s time for Maximum Rocknroll #391, the December 2015 issue of punk’s longest continuously running fanzine! This one is loaded. In these pages you will find what may be the most in-depth correspondence with the MINNEAPOLIS URANIUM CLUB BAND you’ll find anywhere—their parent company and attorneys are notoriously cagey, so read here for more on this Midwestern rock group, their origins, and their sponsors. We’ve also got interviews with Finnish hardcore lifers SA-INT, Alabama antagonist GARY WRONG, the minds behind the radical and labyrinthine Texas hardcore of SIN MOTIVO, the jagged noiseniks of Oakland’s MANSION, and outsider San Francisco hardcore punks TSA. There’s even more! For our first ever interview with any Cuban band in these pages we sat down with ADICTOX and ARRABIO during their Canadian tour, and capping it all off is an incredible interview with Zoë Dodd, Toronto harm reduction worker, activist, and punk. Also included: a scene report from Andalusia as well as photo spreads from Not Dead Yet 2015 and All Punks Go For It, a raw punk rager in the heart of California’s Central Valley. All your favorite columnists are here too, along with punk’s most comprehensive and unsparing reviews section.

Reissue of the Week: HEX Poison In The System: The Demos LP

November 13th, 2015 by

HEX – “Poison In The System: The Demos” CD
If you liked your punk, the UK in the early to mid ’80s was a good place to be. Not only were all kinds of genres flourishing within said rubric, but there was a significant community of like-minded souls, putting on gigs, writing (and distributing) fanzines, (cassette) tape labels, and whatnot. It meant that bands could (and did!) release demos, on cassette, and distribute them far and wide. The anarcho-punk “scene,” spawned by the likes of CRASS and their progeny (SUBHUMANS, CONFLICT, FLUX OF PINK INDIANS, MOB, et al.) were the inspiration and incubator for HEX. Hailing from the Northeast of England, they were part and parcel of the legendary (well, to us folks, anyways) Sunderland Bunker, a venue, and musicians collective. Herein you’ll find four demos tapes (fourteen tracks in all), recorded in 1986 and 1987. A variety of musical styles, evocative of KILLING JOKE, ANTISECT, and the FAMOUS IMPOSTERS grace the demos. It all features the music gifts of Dickie Hammond and Dave Lainey, better known for playing in HDQ and later LEATHERFACE. Really great stuff all round, and some excellent liner notes do a superb job of capturing the sense of community, and possibility that was nurtured by the scene. (Ramsey Kanaan)

Record of the Week: G.L.O.S.S. Girls Living Outside Society’s Shit EP

November 13th, 2015 by

G.L.O.S.S. – “Girls Living Outside Society’s Shit” EP
This exists perfectly as a solid hardcore record, nothing necessarily freaky or weird just excellently solid but a thing that makes it stand out (other than the context it exists in) is that you can hear all of the lyrics. No reading along with lyric sheets necessary—somehow, at breakneck speed Sadie manages to enunciate every word. A thing that is always rough to me about hardcore is all the vocals garbled and barked until I kind of just feel like some angry man is yelling at me. And what Sadie is singing about is so integral and important it’s just really fucking cool to just hear every lyric. This record delves into politics in a way that avoids being exclusionary or preachy but instead is filled with rage and love and an overall we’re-in-this-togetherness. It also comes with an excellent zine that furthers the aesthetic and message.

New Blood! QUITMAN, GAZM, and CONVICT

November 12th, 2015 by

“New Blood” is our weekly feature spotlighting new bands from around the world! See below for info on how to submit. Now, check out some killer new shit…

Band name:
QUITMAN

Date & location formed:
Summer 2015. New Orleans, LA.

Reason for forming:
A friendship fortified in Buffalo met with geographical coincidence in New Orleans. We’ve each spent a lot of time playing in a lot of bands. We live a few blocks from each other. What else are we gonna do? Sometimes we write songs. Sometimes we listen to records and have beers. Sometimes we make food and hang with animals. We still have to wake up everyday. It’s better than trying to meet new people.

IMG_4473

What are your lyrics about?
Stream of consciousness absurdity. Alcohol, anxiety, and embarrassment. Jokes that no one else gets. Being smart enough to know how stupid you are. Being in your 30s and almost kinda having your shit together, but actually not really.

How would you describe your sound?
We like Swell Maps, but don’t really sound like that. The demo has acoustic guitar and singing saw, but we don’t really sound like that. One of us has played in hardcore bands, but we don’t really sound like that. One of us has played in pop punk bands, but we don’t really sound like that. We record with two mics and a 4 track in a living room, we do kinda sound like that. We like distorted vocals. We forgot to have any bass guitar or bass drum on the demo. The other day we stayed up really late and went to see Spray Paint, and we thought they were great. You get the idea.

What’s in the future for this band?
A 2nd tape is almost done. It has bass guitar and bass drum. It would be cool to do a record. Pretty soon we’ll probably be living in New Hampshire, or Buffalo, or the bottom of the ocean. I think we’ll keep playing one way or another for a while though.

Band name:
GAZM

gazmlogo

Date & location formed:
Montreal, QC – November 2014

Reason for forming:
Three out of four of us had just moved to Montreal and were eager to start playing shows here.

What are your lyrics about?
Shitty people and angry animals.

How would you describe your sound?
I think the one line description we got for our first show was “Negative Approach trying to sound like Slayer”.

What’s in the future for this band?
We’re aiming to get the newest tape out as a 7″, write some new slappers, and play as much as we can here and elsewhere.

barbed-wire-500x12

Band name:
Screen Shot 2015-11-12 at 9.45.07 AMDate & location formed:
Olympia, WA in Feb 2014.

Reason for forming:
Myself (max the guitar player/also in Bone Sickness), Mitch (vocalist also in Bone Sickness), and Jeff (drummer, also of gag) wanted to take NWHC in a much more abrasive direction and channel the likes aggressive HC acts such as Poison Idea, Voorhees, and Out Cold… and sort of mix it with an 80s NYHC vibe. At least that was the initial idea. Mitch, playing in Bone Sickness for as long as 5 years gave him an urge to try something new, and was nice enough to invite me along the way.

What are your lyrics about?
Lyrics veer away from politics and ideology and focus primarily on personal outlook and gruesome interests. For example, our track 213 is about the mind of Jeffrey Dahmer.

How would you describe your sound?
We strive to touch on all styles of HC and channel the likes of aforementioned influences, but Painkiller Records’ Cooch, who released our tape for us wrote “There’s almost an early-’80s Swedish element to the guitar playing, but shoved through the classic USHC blender, and then pumped full of the kind of performance-enhancing drugs that get you banned from professional competition.”

What’s in the future for this band?
We are releasing a 7″ some time in 2016 and have flirted with the idea of an east coast run of shows with our friends (who I won’t jump the gun on saying who just yet), but in any case, there will be some touring.
