I was at 600 Lake Shore Drive in Chicago yesterday and, since it was a glorious, sunny day I asked developer Buzz Ruttenberg and Chief Engineer Lou Graziano to take me up on the roof.
Lou mentioned that many of the mechanical systems were housed on the roof, so I took the opportunity to have a look at some of the high-tech computer-controlled systems that ensure the residents' comfort.

Here is another mechanical room tour. This one shows two Carrier 375 ton centrifugal chillers (only one is running at the moment) and a one megawatt MTU 12V2000 twin turbo emergency generator undergoing a load bank (80% of full load - 800 kW). The turbos on this engine are so loud, they absolutely dominate everything else in the mechanical room.
Listen to those turbos scream! 1,000 amps of 480V.

A mechanical room or a boiler room is a room or space in a building dedicated to the mechanical equipment and its associated electrical equipment. Unless a building is served by a centralized heating plant, the size of the mechanical room is usually proportional to the size of the building. A small building or home may have at most a utility room but in large buildings mechanical rooms can be of considerable size, often requiring multiple rooms throughout the building, or even occupying one or more complete floors (see: mechanical floor).
Mechanical rooms typically house the following equipment:
Equipment in mechanical rooms is often operated and maintained by a stationary engineer or a maintenance technicians. Modern buildings use control systems to manage HVAC cycles, lighting, communications, and life safety equipment. Often, the control system hardware is located in the mechanical room and monitored or accessed remotely.
Rooms with only electrical or electronic equipment are not considered mechanical rooms but electrical rooms.
