"They give you a big house, a nice car and a job and lots of money... that's what Syrians back home think Sweden offers asylum seekers," Mahmoud Bitar told BBC Trending.
The reality, Bitar says, is that life in the Nordic country is much more difficult than most anticipate. Bitar's humour and willingness to share the story of his journey out of Syria to Sweden has made him something of a social media star.

PALMYRA, SYRIA — A new video from the bloodthirsty death cult ISIS allegedly shows 25 captured Syrian soldiers executed at the site of ancient Roman ruins in Syria.
The so-called Islamic state gained control of the Syrian town of Palmyra — home to ancient Roman ruins considered archaeological treasures by the United Nations — sometime around May 21.
While some predicted the fundamentalist group would destroy the ruins, ISIS leadership reportedly announced that as the ruins themselves were not "idols" or statues depicting human or animal forms, so the site was spared. Though, a famous statue of a lion and statues at the ruins featuring human faces were reportedly wrecked with sledgehammers.
In a video reportedly released on July 4, the ancient Roman ruins became the backdrop of a murder scene in which 25 ISIS followers who appeared to range in age between 12 and 20 are seen hurting 25 captured Syrian soldiers on to the amphitheater's stage.
After a long reading of the "justifications" for executing the soldiers, the video then shows all 25 soldiers killed by a gunshot to the back of the head. The execution was public and open to all males, including young children.
The new video comes hot on the heels of other sensational ISIS videos that seem to be competing for some sort of "most barbaric" execution competition. Other recent clips from the group have shown victims drowned to death, blown up with a bazooka, beheaded and shot.
For their part, ISIS released video and images showing alleged harsh prisons in Palmyra when it was under the control of the the Syrian regime. ISIS maintains it has liberated the people of the area from the Assad regime, though reports claim up to 400 men, women and children were butchered by the extremist group as they "liberated" Palmyra.

In the last week, approximately 16,000 people have fled into Turkey to escape the fighting but Ankara originally said it would only allow refugees in the event of a humanitarian tragedy.
Turkish authorities closed the border on Sunday after allowing in at least 3,000 people, leaving thousands of people stranded.
"If Turkey accepts a new wave of refugees from Tal Abyad, it means that Turkey should be prepared for an influx of at least 100,000 refugees," Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus said on Monday.
"We are of the opinion that there isn't a humanitarian crisis in Tal Abyad, similar to Kobane or other regions in Syria," he told private CNN-Turk television.
However, the authorities have since opened the border and allowed people to stream in. There have been no reports of border restrictions since.
Tal Abyad lies on a mostly Sunni Arab part of the border between mainly Kurdish Kobane and Syria's most populous ethnic Kurdish region - Hasakeh province - in the northeast.

A number of countries are putting religious restrictions for any intake of Syrian refugees, giving priority to Christians.
Cyprus says it’s ready to accept up to 300 asylum-seekers to help ease the crisis facing the European Union. But it says it prefers them to be Christians. Slovakia has also said that Muslims won't be accepted. Meanwhile, the Australian government is under pressure to increase the intake of Syrian refugees. The opposition has asked Prime Minister Tony Abbott to give priority to Christians and refuse to take Muslims. Europe has been facing an unprecedented influx of asylum-seekers. A number of EU countries have announced their readiness to admit refugees. Many of them receive refugees without discrimination on ethnicity or religion.

Syrians are the vast majority of more than 7,000 refugees flooding the island of Kos since the beginning of the year, At the beginning of the week there were more than 1,500 refugees on the island of 32,000 residents. To try to alleviate the pressure on this and other islands the Greek authorities have developed a new approach.
Faced with a growing backlog of people waiting to register with the police and a deteriorating humanitarian situation, the authorities in Lesvos and Kos, in cooperation with the central government, have decided to allow Syrians with valid passports to board the regular passenger ferries to Athens to be registered there. Around 300 Syrians boarded the night ferries to Athens from Kos and 350 from Lesvos on Thursday.
"To respond to the critical situation in the Greek islands, UNHCR is increasing its personnel in Lesvos, Chios, Samos, Kos, Rhodes, Leros and Evros. Additional deployments are also being planned," Fleming said in Geneva.
UNHCR is already helping local authorities to improve reception conditions, identify additional accommodation for refugees, provide legal information and counselling to new arrivals and distribute sleeping bags and mats, soap, sanitary towels and other relief items to the most needy.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has defended his government's actions in the region since the uprising against his rule, which erupted in 2011.
In an exclusive interview with the BBC's Middle East Editor Jeremy Bowen, Mr Assad denied that his forces had dropped barrel bombs indiscriminately on rebel-held areas, killing thousands of civilians, and dismissed as propaganda a statement by the UN that his government often blocks access to besieged areas for relief organisations.
The Syrian leader also denied that there was a direct dialogue with the US-led coalition fighting Islamic State but confirmed that "general messages" were sometimes passed via third parties.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said the Syrian people must decide their own future without intervention from outside powers, during an interview with US television talk show host Charlie Rose in Novo-Ogaryovo, Sunday.
SOT, Journalist Charlie Rose, (English + French translation also provided): "So you would like to join with the United States in the fight against ISIS; that's part of why you're there. Others think that while that might be part of your goal, you are trying to save the Assad administration because they have been losing ground and the war has not been going well for them; and you are there to rescue them."
SOT, Vladimir Putin, President of Russia (Russian + French translation also provided): "That’s right, that’s how it is. We provide assistance to the legitimate Syrian authorities. Moreover, I strongly believe that by acting otherwise, acting to destroy the legitimate bodies of power, we would create a situation that we are witnessing today in other countries of the region or in other regions of the world, for instance, in Libya, where all state institutions have completely disintegrated. Unfortunately, we are witnessing a similar situation in Iraq. There is no other way to settle the Syrian conflict other than by strengthening the existing legitimate government agencies, support them in their fight against terrorism and, of course, at the same time encourage them to start a positive dialogue with the 'healthy' part of the opposition and launch political transformations."
SOT, Journalist Charlie Rose, (English + French translation also provided): "As you know, some of the coalition partners want to see President al-Assad go first before they will support."
SOT, Vladimir Putin, President of Russia (Russian + French translation also provided): "I would like to advise or recommend them to forward this suggestion to the Syrian people. It is only up to the Syrian people living in Syria to determine who, how and based on what principles their country should be ruled."

Death, brutality and suffering: the cruel realities of the Syrian conflict. A people scarred and a country ravaged, where rebels and government forces battle for supremacy while the outside world struggles, so far unsuccessfully, for solutions.
What's more, increasing international tension over the conflict has also raised the spectre of a proxy war. To discuss the situation, euronews' Isabelle Kumar spoke to Carla del Ponte, a member of the UN Independent Commission of Inquiry on Syria.
Isabelle Kumar, euronews:
Carla del Ponte, many thanks for joining us on Italk. As I mentioned you are part of this investigating commission on Syria, which reported new levels of brutality. Now, you're certainly not new to this game, what stood out for you?
Carla del Ponte:
Good afternoon, we have issued the fifth report and we can see that the crimes, war crimes and crimes against humanity, are growing. There is much more commission of crimes, much more brutality and as it was in the other reports, we have crimes from both sides.
Isabelle Kumar, euronews:
What crimes are we talking about? What really stood out for you in terms of the crimes committed?
Carla del Ponte:
All sorts of violent crimes from killing, torture, sexual violence, executions, deportations. If you look at a list of the possible war crimes and crimes against humanity you have all of them included in what's happening now in Syria. And at the end we have all the elements of chemical weapons.
Isabelle Kumar, euronews:
We are going to now go to our first question that is about chemical weapons.
Anna (Poland):
Hi, my name is Anna, I am from Poland, and I want to ask a question. Is there any proof of chemical weapons in Syria, and how would this influence the situation?
Isabelle Kumar, euronews:
So there is certainly very strong evidence but you're lacking the incontrovertible proof aren't you, if you're not allowed to go into the country?
Carla del Ponte:
Exactly, in the report you can read that we identify four locations where chemical weapons were used but the investigation is ongoing. The Secretary General appointed a special mechanism to investigate and we need experts on this issue. I think the best thing now, if the Commission can establish that chemical weapons were used from both parties, we must wait until the investigation is done, properly done and finished.
Isabelle Kumar, euronews:
Do you think the UN will be allowed to get into the country to get this proof that is required?
Carla del Ponte:
I think so and I hope that all the members of the Commission will be allowed to enter Syria. We are hindered in our work in our activities while we have no access to Syria, so not only the special investigators on chemical weapons but we should be able to enter Syria as soon as possible.
Isabelle Kumar, euronews:
Do you have any idea of a time frame as to when you might possibly be able to enter?
Carla del Ponte:
No, absolutely not, unfortunately not. But we are still asking the UN, the Russian and all other states that can help us have access to Syria. I hope that when the negotiations in Geneva start it will also be an issue to discuss that the Commission will be able to enter Syria, yes it is extremely important.
Isabelle Kumar, euronews:
Back in May you caused some controversy with your statements when you said there was evidence that the rebels had been using chemical weapons, do you regret having said that?
Carla del Ponte:
No absolutely not and I confirm that, but of course there is not conclusive evidence. There are first elements of an investigation and so let's see what will happen during the investigation but we have some elements, of course, otherwise I would not speak about it.
Isabelle Kumar, euronews:
But the evidence seems to show that the chemical weapons are used more by the regime than by the rebels.
Carla del Ponte:
I don't know. Now it is time to wait and to have the final results of the investigation.
Isabelle Kumar, euronews:
We are going to go now to our next question which we have received by social media and that is from Mahmoud who's a Syrian national, and he asks:
"Why does the west say a lot and do little? When will the war end?".

He knew how dangerous the journey would be, but like tens of thousands of other Syrian refugees, he was determined to reach Munich and the hope of a new life. Now, having made the epic journey across six countries on foot, by bus, train and with smugglers, having survived arrests, camps and prisons, he and his brother Mahmoud talk to Phoebe Greenwood about their next big challenge: making a life for themselves without their family in a strange country.

But Turkish hospitality for refugees like Abdurrahman is limited. He isn't allowed to buy any property in Turkey. H

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier is on a four-day trip to Iran, Saudi Arabia and Jordan, with two of those days consecrated to the Iranians.
Steinmeier is hoping to persuade the Iranians to use their influence over Syria’s Bashar al-Assad to seek a diplomatic end to the war there. It is the first official visit to Iran by a German foreign minister in more than 10 years, and coincides with the Core Group meeting of the Munich Security Conference.
“The experience of the Vienna deal should be considered as a base for trust between our regional partners. We are far away from a result in Syria, but even if there’s a long way to go, we need to know that we have commitments to Syrians and the people in neighboring countries to do something which produces a result,” he said.
Iran may have reached agreement over its nuclear programme, but missiles are another thing. This week saw boasts about vast underground arsenals on television, and the launch of a new long-range missile Iran says can be nuclear-capable, and which may have broken UN arms limitation rules.
“We seriously believe that our missile testing has nothing to do with the 2231 resolution, because in the 2231 resolution missiles that are designed for nuclear capabilities are mentioned and none of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s missiles are designed for nuclear capabilities,” said Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.
“By reaching the nuclear deal and officially starting its implementation, Iran will regain its regional position; Steinmeier’s presence in Tehran and his efforts to utilize Iran’s role in resolving the ongoing crisis in the Middle East is a clear endorsement of this position,” says euronews’ Javad Montazeri.

According to an ORB International poll, 81% of Syrians believe ISIS is foreign/American made. We’ve seen ISIS driving around in Humvees and Toyota’s supplied by the US. We’ve seen them using American-made rifles. We know rebels who’ve received money from the American government have become top ISIS officials. A secret Pentagon report revealed that the US not only foresaw the likely rise of ISIS as a result of its foreign policy in Syria, but that it also saw the creation of ISIS as a strategic way to fight Assad. And we also know that our politicians love to use ISIS as a talking point for why we need to keep giving defense contractors and other incredibly rich corporations all our tax dollars. And yet still, unlike Syrians, many Americans still don't believe their country created ISIS. The Resident discusses. Follow The Resident at http://www.twitter.com/TheResident

ISTANBUL—By almost any standard, Syrian refugee Abdurrahman is doing better than most of those who fled the war. The 68-year-old from Latakia recently opened a spice shop in Istanbul, his third small business in the city, and he now speaks enough Turkish to look after his customers.
But Turkish hospitality for refugees like Abdurrahman is limited. He isn't allowed to buy any property in Turkey. He would face high hurdles if he wanted to become a Turkish citizen. And he worries that the Turkish government isn’t doing enough to make sure his four children get a decent education.
“I know my family is more successful than most Syrians here, yet I think about leaving every single day,” he said.

For a moment, the deafening roar of a jet engine drowns out the shrieks of joy from children splashing in the warm waters of the Mediterranean.
Another Russia warplane is taking off from Latakia airport, in northern Syria — proof of the growing involvement by President Vladimir Putin in what he calls a “war on terrorism” and his critics denounce as merely an attempt to prop up his ally, President Bashar al-Assad, by attacking pro-western insurgents rather than the fanatics of Islamic State.
After a military build-up dating back several weeks, Russia now has about 50 aircraft in Syria. Yet an unexpected calm hangs over the airport, which was recently closed to international civilian flights to make room for the Russian forces.
On one side, military planes are lined up in small groups of twos, threes and fours. Russian technicians and maintenance workers and trucks can be seen moving along the tarmac.
The Kremlin says it is flying an average of about 50 missions a day in Syria, although the number, co-ordinated with Assad’s ground forces, varies from day to day.
Sources close to the operation say the aim is eventually to raise this to 200-300 a day, marking a considerable escalation. As part of preparations, a new airstrip is reported to be under construction nearby.
Russia, using the conflict to showcase its military prowess, has deployed Su-24M and Su-34 bombers, low-flying ground attack Su-25CM jets and multi-role Su-30CM fighters. They are backed by Mil Mi-24 attack helicopters and multi-role Mi-8 helicopters.
Military analysts said the first airstrikes, which began on September 30, were aimed at probing rebel forces, establishing their positions and the extent of their firepower.
By attacking simultaneously on several fronts, Assad and his allies hope to deprive insurgents of the ability to move forces in the defence of a particular front, keeping them bogged down and overstretched.
A source close to the operation said the targets were chosen by the Syrians. They were then passed on for verification by Russian drones — one of which Turkey claims to have shot down last week.
The targets were then displayed on monitors in the operations room, where a Russian orthodox priest is also said to have been present.
The source said Russians, worried about how their actions would be perceived by the outside world, rejected some Syrian requests — especially when they involved targeting mosques, abandoned churches or schools believed to be used by the insurgents as bases.
“The Russians refused to hit them because they are religious symbols, despite their military importance,” the source said. “They are extremely concerned about the image of Russia’s military actions here.”
It is difficult independently to verify such claims, which are at odds with assertions by rebel groups, who have posted pictures and videos of civilians — children among them — who they say have been killed in the strikes.
The Kremlin claims its operation is directed purely against Islamic State and Jabhat al-Nusra, al-Qa’ida’s branch in Syria, and its affiliates.
The West says much of Russia’s firepower has been directed against US-backed moderate rebels from the Free Syrian Army — and civilians.
The Russian airstrikes coincide with fresh attacks by the Syrian army on rebel groups that have wrested much of the country from Assad’s control since the start of the bloody civil war four years ago.
On Friday, the Syrian army and its allied Iranian and Hezbollah forces, backed by the Russian airstrikes, began a ground offensive against insurgents in Aleppo, which is home to 2 million people and divided between government forces and their opponents.
The military assault built on a ground attack launched by the same alliance last week against rebels in Hama province further west.
The drive towards Aleppo came a day after an assault on rebel-held towns north of Homs, a centre of opposition to the government.
Recapturing the area north of Homs would help reassert Assad’s control over the main population centres of western Syria and secure territory linking Damascus to the coastal heartland of his minority Alawites.

From VOA Learning English, this is the Education Report.
Many Syrians are trying to study overseas while a civil war continues in their country. Thousands of Syrian university students sought help when they learned there was money to help them continue their education. Leen al Zaibak is with Jusoor, an organization for Syrians living overseas. Jusoor joined with the American-based Institute of International Education to create the Syria Consortium for Higher Education in Crisis. More than 40 universities in the United States and Europe agreed to provide emergency aid to Syrian students and professors. Each university decides which students to accept. Universities in the consortium are supporting 70 students right now. One member of the consortium is American University in Washington. It is supporting a Syrian graduate student and a faculty member in the university's School of International Service. Daniela Kaisth is the vice president of the Institute of International Education. She expects there will be aid opportunities for 600 Syrian students during the next few months. She notes that a former president of Portugal, Jorge Sampaio, launched a scholarship program called the Global Platform 4 Syrian Students. He created the program because of Portugal's history of educating Jewish refugee children during World War II. The Institute of International Education also has a Scholar Rescue Fund for university professors and researchers in any country in crisis. This year, the fund found places for 30 Syrian scholars in five countries. All of the scholarship programs may be found online at iie.org. For VOA Learning English, I'm Alex Villarreal.

Russia has targeted Syrian rebel groups backed by the Central Intelligence Agency in a string of airstrikes running for days, leading the U.S. to conclude that it is an intentional effort by Moscow, American officials said.
The assessment, which is shared by commanders on the ground, has deepened U.S. anger at Moscow and sparked a debate within the administration over how the U.S. can come to the aid of its proxy forces without getting sucked deeper into a proxy war that President Barack Obama says he doesn’t want. The White House has so far been noncommittal about coming to the aid of CIA-backed rebels, wary of taking steps that could trigger a broader conflict.
U.S. officials said Russia’s targeting of its allies on the ground was a direct challenge to Mr. Obama’s Syria policy.

Conscription, or drafting, is the compulsory enlistment of people in a national service, most often a military service.[5]

A fifth column is any group of people who undermine a larger group—such as a nation or a besieged city—from within, usually in favor of an enemy group or nation. The activities of a fifth column can be overt or clandestine. Forces gathered in secret can mobilize openly to assist an external attack. This term is also extended to organized actions by military personnel. Clandestine fifth column activities can involve acts of sabotage, disinformation, or espionage executed within defense lines by secret sympathizers with an external force.

The Syrian army makes fresh advances against foreign-backed militants as Russian warplanes clear the ground for the Syrian soldiers to move on.
Syrian government forces managed to retake the Jafra area, adjacent to the main airport in the eastern province of Dayr al-Zawr. Syrian officials say the recaptured area is considered the first line of defense for the airport. The army also made gains in the north after liberating three villages from militant groups near the city of Aleppo. Elsewhere in the south, the Syrian forces fought a battle with Nusra Front terrorists in the province of Dara’a. The Syrians inflicted heavy losses on them close to the strategic Golan Heights.

This Migration Policy Institute (MPI) panel discussion, in partnership with the Middle East Institute and the Center for Middle Eastern Strategic Studies (ORSAM), examines the status of Syrian refugees abroad and the effect of the ongoing Syrian crisis on Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, and Iraq. Panelists Oytun Orhan, ORSAM Project Coordinator and Researcher, Peri-Khan Aqrawi-Whitcomb, Middle East Research Institute Junior Research Fellow, Faysal Itani, Resident Fellow at the Atlantic Council's Rafik Hariri Center for the Middle East, and Saban Kardas, ORSAM President discuss the experiences of each country as outlined in ORSAM’s report. The project team visited each country and after six months of boots-on-the-ground research, found that women and children account for more than 75 percent of the refugees, making education in particular a devastating issue for the next generation of Syrians. In addition, Syrian emigrants settle not only in camps but also in cities, raising prices and lowering wages all along the Syrian borders. The discussion is moderated by Kathleen Newland, Director of the Refugee Protection Program at MPI.
The panel makes the case that because of the heavy financial and social costs, Syrian displacement is not merely a problem for Syria or even the greater Middle East; the destabilization is a global problem requiring significant outreach to the global community.

Ahmad Khalil knew that his family's days in Syria were numbered when security forces and militia cordoned off his neighbourhood in Damascus in April 2013. He says the massacre began shortly after.
"The attack was atrocious. We saw knives and cleavers and witnessed killings by the Syrian regime and militia," said Khalil. "That's when I decided we had to flee Syria as soon as possible, by any means necessary."
In Syria, Khalil owned a store selling dental supplies and equipment.
He fled the violence on foot with his wife and three children, now six, 10, and 14, expecting to die at the hands of Syrian security forces at any moment. Days later, Khalil and his family made it to safety in Egypt. His journey, however, had just begun.
The main route to reach Europe is by crossing the Mediterranean from Libya. After five days on a crowded boat, Ahmed Khalil and his family finally made it to Italy.
Having escaped the war their goal is to enter Austria undetected, where they hope for a new beginning and a brighter future.

The Battle of Aleppo is an ongoing military confrontation in Aleppo, Syria between the Free Syrian Army, Islamic Front, People's Defence Units and Sunni militants against the Syrian government, Hezbollah and Shiite militants. The battle began on 19 July 2012 as a part of the Syrian Civil War. The battle's scale and importance led combatants to name it the "mother of battles". The battle has been highly noted for the Syrian army's indiscriminate use of barrel bombs dropped from helicopters, killing thousands. Hundreds of thousands have been forced to evacuate. On the other hand, the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights denounced the Free Syrian Army for the indiscriminate bombardment of government-held districts, with gas cylinders filled with explosives, which resulted in hundreds of casualties. The battle has also caused catastrophic destruction to the Old City, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

2013 was a bad year for the Syrian rebels. While the mainstream rebels struggled to defend their frontlines from the resurgent Assad regime, a renegade al Qaeda offshoot, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), launched a series of assaults on the formerly-dominant FSA brigades from behind, capturing their strongholds in rebel-held northern Syria and executing their commanders. Now the rebels are fighting back.
A coalition of former FSA brigades, funded by Saudi Arabia and rebranded as the Syrian Revolutionaries Front (or SRF), launched a surprise offensive against ISIS in the spring of 2014, in a campaign supported by both the Saudi and US governments. VICE News was the first western TV crew into Northern Syria for 6 months, embedding with the SRF as they reimposed their rule over the country's northwestern Idlib province. What we witnessed was a brief window into a complex and morally ambiguous conflict with no end in sight.

Five-part series following a year in the life of four schools in Damascus, a high pressure crossroads in the Middle East.
It concentrates on some remarkable characters finding their way in a country that has never before opened ordinary life up to the cameras in this way, challenges the usual cliches of Arab life and charts the highs and lows of the school year.
Mrs Amal Hassan is the larger-than-life headteacher of Zaki Al Arsouzi Girls' School, intent on teaching her girls to stick up for themselves and 'be free'. She has a new girl at school, Dua'a, who comes from a devout Muslim family. Until now Dua'a has been educated at a conservative Islamic school, but this term she has moved to the more liberal Zaki Al-Arsouzi School. How will she get on with the big ideas of her new headteacher?
Across town at Jaramana Boys' School, Yusif is football mad. He's an Iraqi refugee who lived through the bombs of Baghdad. Now, in the relative calm of Syria, he must start to overcome his deep-seated fear of loud bangs.

As Syria's bloody civil war enters its third year, fighting has reached the country's Kurdish-dominated northeast, a region until recently almost untouched by the conflict. The Kurdish PYD party and its YPG militia, which is affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in neighboring Turkey, took over control of much of Hassakeh province from the Assad regime in the summer of 2012, and with it control of Syria's precious oilfields.
But the PYD's hopes of staying neutral in the conflict and building an autonomous Kurdish state were dashed when clashes broke out with Syrian rebel forces in the strategic border city of Ras al-Ayn. That encounter quickly escalated into an all-out war between the Kurds and a powerful alliance of jihadist groups, including the al-Qaeda affiliates ISIS and Jabhat al-Nusra.
In September of 2013, VICE crossed the border into Syria's Kurdish region to document the YPG's counteroffensive against the jihadists, who had struck deep into rural Hassakeh in an attempt to surround and capture Ras al-Ayn. With unparalleled access to the Kurdish and Syrian Christian fighters on the frontlines, we found ourselves witnessing a bitter and almost unreported conflict within the Syrian war, where the Assad regime is a neutral spectator in a life or death struggle between jihadist-led rebels and Kurdish nationalists, pitting village against village and neighbor against neighbor.

The civil war in Syria has created the world's worst refugee crisis in twenty years. 2.8 million people have fled their homeland to live in foreign camps, such as the UNHCR camp in northern Jordan.
"I always heard the word refugee but I never imagined I would be one", says Samar Hariri, a grieving school teacher and mother of five. Samar, her husband and their children are just a handful of the 100,000 displaced Syrians who flocked to Camp Zaatari - just a few kilometres from the border with Syria - and who now call it home. Two years ago, collections of tents sat incongruously in the middle of this barren desert. Now a refugee city with a distinctive heart and soul of its own, a community of resilient, hopeful people looks set to grow ever more established. "You ask yourself, why is this happening to me? A person who always had dignity now has none". Once a prosperous, middle class family man, Abu Diaa now focuses on transforming their camp into something resembling home: an essential coping mechanism for enduring life in a refugee camp. It is an impulse Kilian Kleinschmidt, head of Zaatari Camp, understands: "When you lose everything... your home, your belongings, you have lost your identity. Everything has gone." In this deeply moving report we witness the stoicism of a family rebuilding themselves among thousands of others.
