WAR AT DNC: O’Malley blasts Democratic leaders for ‘rigged’ 2016 debate process. Debbie Wasserman Schultz Gives O’Malley Cold Shoulder After He Bashes DNC. O’Malley: DNC’s Lack of Debates Is ‘Frankly Political Malpractice’ MINNEAPOLIS -- Former Maryland governor Martin O'Malley effectively declared war on the Democratic Party leadership here Friday, blasting the party for what he called a "rigged" debate process in the presidential nominating contest and demanding it sanction additional debates.
O'Malley, who has struggled to gain traction in the polls this summer, used his appearance before the Democratic National Committee meeting to angrily denounce the party's rules that he argued were a disadvantage to all the candidates and a disservice to Democrats.
"This sort of rigged process has never been attempted before," O'Malley said. He added, "We are the Democratic Party, not the undemocratic party."
[O’Malley adds his name to a petition seeking to make Jon Stewart a debate moderator]
Despite public objections from O'Malley and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), who have called for more debates, DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz has sanctioned six debates, only four before next February's Iowa caucuses.
O'Malley, speaking from the DNC dais with Wasserman-Schultz sitting a few feet to his left, slammed what he called a "cynical move to delay or limit our own party debates."
"Who’s decree is this exactly? Where did it come from? To what end or purpose?" O'Malley asked. He added, "We put our forward-thinking ideas on the back-burner as if we're trying to hide them from the airwaves."
O'Malley made no reference to the Democratic front-runner, former secretary of state Hillary Rodham Clinton, but it was clear in his remarks that he believes fewer debates make it more difficult for him and other challengers to defeat Clinton for the nomination.
[Hillary Clinton is the new standard-bearer for gun control. So let’s look at her record.]
O'Malley argued that with Donald Trump and other Republican candidates making headlines with inflammatory rhetoric, Democrats should hold more, not fewer, debates.
"Will we let the circus run unchallenged on every channel while we cower in shadows under a decree of silence in the ranks? Or will we demand equal time to showcase our ideas?" O'Malley asked. He added, "Silence and complacency in the face of hate is not an honorable option for the Democratic Party."
DNC spokeswoman Holly Shulman, responding to O'Malley's remarks, said in a statement: "We are thrilled the candidates are so eager to participate in our debates. We believe that six debates will give plenty of opportunity for the candidates to be seen side-by-side. I'm sure there will be lots of other forums for the candidates to make their case to voters, and that they will make the most out of every opportunity."

Speaking on Democracy Now! recently, David Simon, a Baltimore resident best known for creating the television series "The Wire," criticized Democratic presidential candidate Martin O’Malley’s policing policies as mayor of Baltimore. "It was almost as if he couldn’t get the reductions in the murder rate that he had promised as a candidate, and the next three or four years were: ’Let’s just throw everybody in the back of a van,’ Simon said. "If you looked at a cop the wrong way in Baltimore in about those three central years when Marty was trying to become governor, you went in the back of a police van, you were taken down to the city jail, you know, held overnight." O’Malley responds to Simon and also discusses the recent disruption of his appearance at the Netroots Nation conference by Black Lives Matter protesters who declared a "state of emergency" over the killings of African Americans. O’Malley also talks about the death of Freddie Gray in Baltimore police custody.

wn.com/Martin O'Malley Vs. David Simon Of The Wire

During Chris Wallace‘s interview with 2016 GOP presidential candidate Rick Perry on Fox New Sunday, the show host took a minute to ask the former governor of Texas about his state’s monumentally high uninsured rate. During Perry’s time as governor, Texas boasted what Wallace calls the “highest uninsured rate in the country” as “more than one in five Texans didn’t have health coverage.” Wallace then put to Perry the question, “Is that looking out for the little guy?” Perry’s response was pure, full-blooded TexaN If how you keep score is how many people you force to buy insurance, well then I would say that’s how you keep score Let me explain what we do in Texas, and this is a state by state decision. We make access to health care the real issue. We passed the most sweeping tort reform in the nation. We have 35,000 more licensed physicians to practice medicine in 2013 than we did a decade before that.
Wallace swings back to whether or not Perry feels any “responsibility” for the state’s uninsured masses, but his guest “sticks to his guns” with his “That’s not how we keep score!” line.

Meet the Twins Who Flanked Rick Perry During His Presidential Announcement
Rick Perry's speech wasn't the only part of his presidential announcement that had people talking today.
Many viewers were distracted by the burly male twins standing behind him, flanking him on either side.
Rick Perry Announces He's Running for President in 2016
At first it appeared that they may have just been lucky members of the crowd who happened to have snagged key podium spots behind the former Texas governor, but Perry eventually introduced him in his speech.
Marcus and Morgan Luttrell are Texan brothers and Navy SEALs. Marcus Luttrell is best known for his book "Lone Survivor," which was later turned into a movie. It documents a mission in Afghanistan where he was the only one of four SEALs to survive a mission.
Today marked Perry's second run for president and he chose to join the crowded field with a kick-off speech highlighting his time in the air force (with the selection of venue: an airfield) and his special guests.
Perry met Marcus Luttrell not long after the soldier returned from Afghanistan and offered any help should he need any. Luttrell took him up on the offer and they have built a close personal relationship.
"He is not just a lone survivor to Anita and me, he is a second son," Perry said in his speech.
Perry's camp released a video highlighting the former governor's bond with Luttrell over a month ago, featuring Luttrell speaking at an unspecified event and telling how the Perry family has effectively taken him in. In the video, Luttrell called Perry "my best friend and my father figure... teaching me important values that I've learned after the military. I'll owe you forever on that one I mean that's why you're the godfather of my kids, man."
In addition to the Luttrell brothers, Taya Kyle, the widow of famed "American Sniper" Chris Kyle, was also in attendance.

Following another tragic movie theater shooting, Rick Perry is calling for more people to buy guns and bring them to movie theaters. Despite the mountain of data showing that fewer guns lead to fewer murders, Republicans always want more. Cenk Uygur, host of The Young Turks, breaks it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.
"On Sunday, Rick Perry attempted to stand out from the (already spectacularly incompetent) pool of GOP hopefuls with one of the dumbest responses to the Lafayette shooting yet. In an interview with CNN, the Texas governor said that “it makes a lot of sense” to allow more people to carry guns into gun-free zones like movie theaters.
From Perry’s interview:
I will suggest to you that these concepts of gun-free zones are a bad idea. I think that you allow the citizens of this country, who have appropriately trained, appropriately backgrounded, know how to handle and use firearms, to carry them."*

"Martin O’Malley took off his gloves on Sunday, delivering a bare-knuckled critique of his Democratic presidential primary rivals on the issue of immigration reform. Speaking at a forum organized by the Fair Immigration Reform Movement and The Nation he charged his opponents with a fairweather “poll-tested” approach to immigrant’s rights. O’Malley slammed Hillary Clinton over reports that she asked then-Gov. Elliot Spitzer to spike a bill to give driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants.
O’Malley, a former Gov. of Maryland, tied Senator Bernie Sanders to former CNN host Lou Dobbs, a name once loathed by Latino activist in a way not unlike Donald Trump is today.
“When comprehensive immigration reform was up for a vote in [2007], Senator Sanders went on Lou [Dobbs’] show — are you familiar with Lou Dobbs? — and said that immigrants take our jobs and depress our wages,” O’Malley said, according to the Washington Post. “Not only are those statements flat-out wrong, they actually harm the consensus.”

George Stephanopoulos confronted Bernie Sanders on ABC’s This Week this morning over Martin O’Malley‘s attack that he was disloyal to President Obama. During the South Carolina Democratic forum this past Friday, O’Malley touted his credentials as a lifelong Democrat who fully supported the president in 2012 before saying Sanders was trying to get someone to run against Obama. In March 2011, Sanders said that a primary challenge to the president would “enliven” the debate on the Democratic side, and four months later he even said, “One of the reasons the president has been able to move so far to the right is that there is no primary opposition to him… I think it would be a good idea if President Obama faced some primary opposition.” When Stephanopoulos pressed him earlier on “trying to gin up opposition,” but Sanders dismissed this as “media stuff.” He insisted that the implication he opposed Obama’s reelection is “categorically false.”
Sanders explained he worked “very hard” to get Obama elected in 2012 and praised what a good job he has done, especially with all the Republican opposition he’s faced.

The three U.S. Democratic presidential hopefuls participated in a television forum Friday.
MSNBC host Rachel Maddow, in Rock Hill, South Carolina, interviewed each candidate -- Hillary Clinton, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and former Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley -- one at a time.
Front-runner Clinton was interviewed after the two men.
O'Malley said he is proud to be a lifelong Democrat, and questioned Sanders loyalty to the political party. Sanders is an independent in Congress who generally sides with Democrats.
"I think that when President (Barack) Obama was running for re-election, I was glad to step up and work very hard for him while Senator Sanders was trying to find someone to primary him," O'Malley said. "I'm a lifelong Democrat. ... I believe in the party of Franklin Roosevelt."

Lauded as a progressive leader by the activist base of the Democratic Party, outgoing Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley is increasingly mentioned as a potential presidential candidate. Among other accomplishments O'Malley helped lead the push for his state’s “Dream Act” that gave undocumented college students in-state tuition, and led Maryland to be one of the first states to recognize same sex marriages. Are O'Malley's progressive politics a roadmap for the Democratic Party in a post-Obama world?
