Exploring the Tension Between Calvinists and Arminians
In twelve minutes, John Piper pulls apart some of the tensions between Calvinism and Arminianism. Believing the whole Bible, with all of its varied pieces, is not a small or simple thing. This video is an introduction to the teachings of John Calvin, the father of "Reformed" or "Calvinist" theology. Calvinism is a school of systematic theology that emphasizes the sovereignty of God, who through the doctrine of predestination, has ordained an Elect to join Him in the Kingdom of Heaven. In addition to introducing the foundations of Calvinist theology, I outline the "Five Points" of Calvinism (Total Depravity, Unconditional Election, Limited Atonement, Irresistible Grace, and Perseverance of the Saints) and talk about Calvinist iconoclasm and clothing.
This video is intended primarily for European History students seeking to understand the basics of Calvinist theology in order to better understand the Protestant Reformation. I am a historian - not a theologian - and I am explaining the basics to students who have a casual scholarly interest in the subject. I am neither trying to prove nor to disprove the validity of Calvinist theology - just to inform people about the basic tenets in as informative and entertaining of a way as possible. It is not my intention to ignite a religious debate, although I understand that this is often a consequence when posting videos about theology.

Which is Biblical: Calvinism or Libertarianism?
A hangout on the question of the divine sovereignty of the God of the Bible and its relation to human freedom. Does the Bible teach human liberty from the predestining plan of God? Does the Bible teach that God predestines people to heaven or hell? What does the Bible teach on the intersection of God's will and human volition?
We will discuss these things with expository argument.

Predestination (Calvinism)
The doctrine of predestination in Calvinism deals with the question of the control that God exercises over the world. In the words of the Westminster Confession of Faith, God "freely and unchangeably ordained whatsoever comes to pass." The second use of the word "predestination" applies this to the salvation, and refers to the belief that God appointed the eternal destiny of some to salvation by g

The power of the gospel through Calvinism (James White)
Reformed folk preach a God-centered, powerful gospel which trusts in the sovereign work of the Holy Spirit within the hearts of rebellious man. God is powerful enough to command the light of faith to exist in the darkness of a heart: " For God, who said, “Light shall shine out of darkness,” is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of

Refuting Pastor Wagner on Calvinism
Apparently Calvinists believe in 7 points. No they don't. True Calvinists believe in TULIP as they have found their origin in the Canons of Dort. True Calvinists also affirm human freedom. God doesn't force anyone to do anything. That would violate the very definition of "will."

Response to "Where Calvinism Goes Wrong" by Pastor Wagner
Pastor Wagner is sometimes misunderstood as a Calvinist by people on Youtube. He holds to the essence of what Calvinism is all about (particularly in regards to unconditional predestination). Unfortunately he denies the doctrine of the Perseverance of the Saints and even believes Saul went to heaven. He also claims to deny Irresistible Grace.
The big error that he made in his video was making rep

Flowers utterly destroys this notion in today's podcast. This podcast originally aired 12/17/2015 at http://directory.libsyn.com/shows/view/id/soteriology101/

1 Corinthians 5:7-13
7 Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us: 8 Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. 9 I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators: 10 Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world. 11 But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat. 12 For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that are within? 13 But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person.

Facts : 1 Calvinism Calvinism is a system of Christian theology and an approach to Christian life and thought within the Protestant tradition articulated by John Calvin and subsequently by successors, associates, followers and admirers of Calvin and his interpretation of Scripture, and perspective on Christian life and theology
Facts : 2 Calvin s system of theology and Christian life forms the basis of the Reformed tradition, a term roughly equivalent to Calvinism
Facts : 3 The Reformed tradition was originally advanced by stalwarts such as Martin Bucer, Heinrich Bullinger and Peter Martyr Vermigli, and also influenced English reformers such as Thomas Cranmer and John Jewel
Facts : 4 However, because of Calvin s great influence and role in the confessional and ecclesiastical debates throughout the 17th century, this Reformed movement generally became known as Calvinism
Facts : 5 Today, this term also refers to the doctrines and practices of the Reformed churches, of which Calvin was an early leader, and the system is perhaps best known for its doctrines of predestination and election
Facts : 6 Both Luther and Calvin thought along lines linked with the theological teachings of Augustine of Hippo
Facts : 7 The Augustinianism of the Reformers struggled against Pelagianism, a heresy that they perceived in the Catholic Church of their day
Facts : 8 Ulrich Zwingli was a Swiss scholar and parish priest who was likewise influential in the beginnings of the Protestant Reformation
Facts : 9 Zwingli claimed that his theology owed nothing to Luther and that he had developed it in 1516, before Luther s famous protest, though his doctrine of justification was remarkably similar to that of Luther
Facts : 10 Zwingli began preaching his version of reform, with certain points as the aforementioned doctrine of justification, but others (with which Luther vehemently disagreed) such as the position that veneration of icons was actually idolatry and thus a violation of the first commandment, and the denial of the real presence in the Eucharist
Facts : 11 Followers of Zwingli pushed his message and reforms far further than even he had intended, such as rejecting infant baptism
Facts : 12 This split between Luther and Zwingli formed the essence of the Protestant division between Lutheran and Reformed theology

The doctrine of predestination in Calvinism deals with the question of the control that God exercises over the world. In the words of the Westminster Confession of Faith, God "freely and unchangeably ordained whatsoever comes to pass." The second use of the word "predestination" applies this to the salvation, and refers to the belief that God appointed the eternal destiny of some to salvation by grace, while leaving the remainder to receive eternal damnation for all their sins, even their original sin. The former is called "unconditional election", and the latter "reprobation". In Calvinism, people are predestined and effectually called in due time to faith by God.

Reformed folk preach a God-centered, powerful gospel which trusts in the sovereign work of the Holy Spirit within the hearts of rebellious man. God is powerful enough to command the light of faith to exist in the darkness of a heart: " For God, who said, “Light shall shine out of darkness,” is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. " (2Cor. 4:6, NASB)

Apparently Calvinists believe in 7 points. No they don't. True Calvinists believe in TULIP as they have found their origin in the Canons of Dort. True Calvinists also affirm human freedom. God doesn't force anyone to do anything. That would violate the very definition of "will."
"God has endued the will of man with that natural liberty, that is neither forced, nor, by any absolute necessity of nature, determined good, or evil." - Westminster Confession of Faith, 1646
"God has indued the will of man, by nature, with liberty and the power to choose and to act upon his choice. This free will is neither forced, nor destined by any necessity of nature to do good or evil." - 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith
"Again, it is objected that Supralapsarianism makes the decree of reprobation just as absolute as the decree of election. In other words, that it regards reprobation as purely an act of God’s sovereign good pleasure, and not as an act of punitive justice. According to its representation sin does not come into consideration in the decree of reprobation. But this is hardly correct, though it may be true of some Supralapsarians. In general, however, it may be said that, while they regard preterition as an act of God’s sovereign good pleasure, they usually regard precondemnation as an act of divine justice which does take sin into consideration." - Louis Berkhof, Systematic Theology, pg. 122
"But Supralapsarians abhor the idea of a tyrannical God, and at least some of them explicitly state that, while preterition is an act of God’s sovereign will, the second element of reprobation, namely, condemnation, is an act of justice and certainly takes account of sin. This proceeds on the supposition that logically preterition precedes the decree to create and to permit the fall, while condemnation follows this. The logic of this position may be questioned, but it at least shows that the Supralapsarians who assume it, teach that God takes account of sin in the decree of reprobation." - Louis Berkhof, Systematic Theology, pg. 119

The big error that he made in his video was making reprobation, double predestination and supralapsarianism equivalent. All three are different according to Calvinist scholars. And most Calvinist scholars would agree with pastor Wagner that God passes over the rest of fallen mankind and doesn't actively add sin or unbelief into their hearts. Equal Ultimacy (affirmed by Dr. Robert L. Reymond - see A New Systematic Theology pg. 345 or 360) is often confused with double predestination. Equal Ultimacy teaches that God equally (or symmetrically) and actively works in the hearts of the elect (unto faith and salvation) and the non-elect (unto unbelief and reprobation). Most Calvinist scholars would deem it unnecessary for God's decree of reprobation to be active since original sin, the flesh and Satan are already enough to lead all men towards hell: God doesn't need to add anything. In fact, common grace teaches that God restrains the evil in man so they're not as evil as they potentially could be. This contradicts Equal Ultimacy.
John Calvin believed in common grace:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQgxxsKL-uc
I think I forgot to address pastor Wagner's interpretation of Romans 9. In short, many Calvinists would have a very similar interpretation of it: God graciously and unconditionally choosing who will be saved from sinful humanity and passing over the rest, leaving them in their sin unto their own damnation. It's true that Paul doesn't specifically say "He" (God) prepared them for destruction (v.22). So it's debatable.
Here are some of the quotes I used in this video:
"Reprobation may be defined as that eternal decree of God whereby He has determined to pass some men by with the operations of His special grace, and to punish them for their sins, to the manifestation of His justice." Berkhorf, Systematic Theology, 116
“However, the term double predestination is not a helpful term because it gives the impression that both election and reprobation are carried out in the same way by God and have no essential differences between them, which is certainly not true. Therefore, the term double predestination is not generally used by Reformed theologians, though it is sometimes used to refer to Reformed teaching by those who criticize it.” – Grudem, Systematic Theology, 581
"Reprobation is the name given to God's eternal decision regarding those sinners whom He has not chosen for life. In not choosing them for life, God has determined not to change them. They will continue in sin, and finally will be judged for what they have done." - Reformation Study Bible "Election and Reprobation" (found in Romans 9:18)
Also Grudem defines reprobation as:
“Reprobation is the sovereign decision of God before creation to pass over some persons, in sorrow deciding not to save them, and to punish them for their sins, and thereby to manifest his justice.” - Grudem, Systematic Theology, 595
Sproul, Grudem and Berkhof each affirm reprobation but I don't think any of them affirm supralapsarianism. They all certainly reject Equal Ultimacy. Sproul called it sub-Calvinism and almost calls it hyper-Calvinism.

This is the full debate video over which soteriological view is taught in Romans 9. Professor Leighton Flowers defends a non-Calvinistic Southern Baptist perspective and Dr. James White defends the Calvinistic perspective.
Dr. White's main argument against Professor Flowers is that he "doesn't exegete the text." Yet, according to the agreement (approved by both presenters before the debate) the goal was to present a positive explanation of the intention of the author. No agreement was ever made that both parties would give a full exegesis (however that is defined) of the entire chapter, and neither party did provide exegetical commentary on every verse in the chapter. Unfortunately, Dr. White fails to engage with Professor Flowers' arguments under the guise of "it wasn't exegetical." Calvinists accuse non-Calvinists of not talking about the subject of Romans 9 on the basis that the non-Calvinist believes the subject of Romans 9 is different than they think it is. It is a question begging game to assume someone is not addressing the subject of the text simply on the basis that they disagree on that subject.
For example, the Pro-Life advocate could argue for the value of human life in order to promote banning abortion and the "Pro-Choice" advocate could reply by saying, "This isn't about the value of life, it is about the value of women's rights." The Pro-Choice (pro-abortion) advocate is reframing the debate and accusing his opponent of not dealing with the subject at hand when in reality the Pro-Life advocate is focused upon the correct subject along. The debate is over which subject must be in focus.
The same is true in this debate. Prof. Flowers focuses his attention upon what he believes in the true intention of the author given the historical context of Israel's judicial hardening in bringing about God's redemptive plan and fulfillment of His promise. Dr. White doesn't engage with this point, but resorts to question begging by accusing Prof. Flowers of not exegeting the text properly (i.e. supposedly defined by White as "reading each verse in order and giving commentary that fits his interpretation.")
During White's rebuttal, he accused Flowers of only addressing Total Inability and a couple of verses in Romans 9. And in a post debate show, Dr. White accused Flowers of not even addressing Romans 9 in his opener until 8 minutes into the presentation. Watch for yourselves and see if these are accurate statements.
