RECONSTRUCTION using the audio from Elvis' final live performance for what would be 9yrs. (Now and Then There's) A Fool Such As I was a hit for Elvis while he was in the Army. In 1961, he did two benefit concerts, one in Memphis and one in Hawaii for the new Pearl Harbor Memorial. It may be his finest concert because it is a combination of the early Elvis sound of the 50's plus he performed his new singles which were more mature. He had a hotshot band that in addition to Scotty Moore on guitar also featured the legendary Hank Garland who after 1961 was unable to play on anymore of Elvis' records due to an auto accident.
The video you see here is taken from the film ELVIS starring Kurt Russell and is pretty close to probably how it would have been to see The King during this time period. In the film, the soundtrack was performed by Ronnie McDowell. Here, averyshakyproduction did what he calls a "reconstruction". I used the work he did but made it black and white and during the solo instead of going to just stock footage, I used footage of the REAL Hank Garland playing guitar. I slowed "Sugarfoot Rag" down to somewhat simulate the timing. I wish we had actual footage of Elvis and Hank doing this song, but this is as close as we're going to get.

Walter Louis "Hank" Garland (November 11, 1930 – December 27, 2004) was a Nashville studio musician who performed with Elvis Presley, Patsy Cline, Roy Orbison and many others.
Born in Cowpens, South Carolina, Garland began playing the guitar at the age of 6. He appeared on local radio shows at 12 and was discovered at 14 at a South Carolina record store. He moved to Nashville at age 16, staying in Ma Upchurch's boarding house, where he roomed with upright bassist Bob Moore and fiddler Dale Potter.
At age 19, Garland recorded his million-selling hit "Sugarfoot Rag", although some attribute the song to Bernie B. Smith, Jr., published two years earlier by M.M. Cole/BMI as "Bernie's Reel". An instrumental version was the opening theme for ABC-TV's Ozark Jubilee from 1955–1960. Garland appeared on the Jubilee with Grady Martin's band, and on Eddy Arnold's network and syndicated television shows.
He is best known for his work on Elvis Presley's recordings from 1957 to 1961 which produced such rock hits as "Little Sister", "I Need Your Love Tonight" and "A Big Hunk O' Love". However, Garland also worked with many country music as well as rock 'n roll stars of the late 1950s and early 1960s including Patsy Cline, Brenda Lee, Mel Tillis, Marty Robbins, the Everly Brothers, Boots Randolph, Roy Orbison and Conway Twitty. He also played with jazz artists such as George Shearing and Charlie Parker in New York and went on to record Jazz Winds From a New Direction, showcasing his evolving talent. It is also believed that he is the first to explore the use of the Power chord in popular music.

Elvis Aaron Presley (January 8, 1935 – August 16, 1977) was one of the most popular American singers of the 20th century. A cultural icon, he is widely known by the single name Elvis. He is often referred to as the "King of Rock and Roll" or simply "the King".
Born in Tupelo, Mississippi, Presley moved to Memphis, Tennessee, with his family at the age of 13. He began his career there in 1954, working with Sun Records owner Sam Phillips, who wanted to bring the sound of African American music to a wider audience. Accompanied by guitarist Scotty Moore and bassist Bill Black, Presley was the most important popularizer of rockabilly, an uptempo, backbeat-driven fusion of country and rhythm and blues. RCA Victor acquired his contract in a deal arranged by Colonel Tom Parker, who would manage the singer for over two decades. Presley's first RCA single, "Heartbreak Hotel", released in January 1956, was a number one hit. He became the leading figure of the newly popular sound of rock and roll with a series of network television appearances and chart-topping records. His energized interpretations of songs, many from African American sources, and his uninhibited performance style made him enormously popular—and controversial. In November 1956, he made his film debut in Love Me Tender.

RECONSTRUCTION using the audio from Elvis' final live performance for what would be 9yrs. (Now and Then There's) A Fool Such As I was a hit for Elvis while he was in the Army. In 1961, he did two benefit concerts, one in Memphis and one in Hawaii for the new Pearl Harbor Memorial. It may be his finest concert because it is a combination of the early Elvis sound of the 50's plus he performed his new singles which were more mature. He had a hotshot band that in addition to Scotty Moore on guitar also featured the legendary Hank Garland who after 1961 was unable to play on anymore of Elvis' records due to an auto accident.
The video you see here is taken from the film ELVIS starring Kurt Russell and is pretty close to probably how it would have been to see The King during this time period. In the film, the soundtrack was performed by Ronnie McDowell. Here, averyshakyproduction did what he calls a "reconstruction". I used the work he did but made it black and white and during the solo instead of going to just stock footage, I used footage of the REAL Hank Garland playing guitar. I slowed "Sugarfoot Rag" down to somewhat simulate the timing. I wish we had actual footage of Elvis and Hank doing this song, but this is as close as we're going to get.

The show consisted of 26 half-hour filmed episodes starring Eddy Arnold in different roles within a musical narrative. Arnold portrayed, among others, a lumberjack, a traveling salesman, a cowboy, a pet shop owner, himself, and even Stephen Foster. The late Lenny Breau, an underground hero, is considered such a masterful guitarist by his admirers that it somehow does not seem surprising that the Guitarchives label was started specifically to release his music. When their much-anticipated festival performance was canceled due to an unruly crowd, the group documented their performance anyway, recording on the back porch of a mansion RCA had rented during the festival (depicted by the drawing on the cover.)

The show consisted of 26 half-hour filmed episodes starring Eddy Arnold in different roles within a musical narrative. Arnold portrayed, among others, a lumberjack, a traveling salesman, a cowboy, a pet shop owner, himself, and even Stephen Foster. Produced, directed and written by Chicago NBC veteran Ben Park, the series featured Betty Johnson, who usually played Arnold's romantic interest; and in supporting roles, the Jordanaires, using the name Gordonaires. A promotional booklet for the program explained that the group used the name Jordanaires "only for their recordings." The more complete explanation is that it legally protected the producers in case the group, which owned the name Jordanaires, left the program prematurely. For this show, the group was composed of Hoyt Hawkins, Hugh Jarett, Neal Matthews, Jr. and Gordon Stoker. Guitarist Hank Garland and Roy Wiggins (steel guitar) also made occasional appearances. A young Ed Asner appeared in one episode.
The producers termed the program, filmed at Kling Studios in Chicago, Illinois, a TV filmusical. Production began in October 1954; it was among the earliest syndicated American TV programs. Although popular in some small markets, it suffered from uninspired performances and storylines, a poor soundtrack and inadequate marketing.
In 1959, episodes were edited together with segments from The Old American Barn Dance and Jimmy Dean's Town and Country Time, a local Washington, D.C. program and syndicated by producer Bernard L. Schubert under the title, Your Musical Jamboree

The late Lenny Breau, an underground hero, is considered such a masterful guitarist by his admirers that it somehow does not seem surprising that the Guitarchives label was started specifically to release his music. This two-CD set (which was put out in 1995) contains a previously unreleased duet concert from 1983 featuring Breau and bassist Dave Young. The music (full of close musical communication) is subtle and quiet yet consistently inventive. It is obvious after a few minutes of listening that Breau had complete control of his guitar and an original voice of his own. Although most of the repertoire is standards (with just two fairly basic originals), there is little predictable about the playing. Highlights include Breau's interpretations of "There Is No Greater Love," "All Blues," McCoy Tyner's "Vision," "Beautiful Love," and a cooking "There Will Never Be Another You," but all 17 performances have their rewarding moments. Overall, this two-fer gives one a definitive portrait of the nearly forgotten legend.

Harmony Records was founded in 1925 as a subsidiary of Columbia Records and was revived in 1957. This new Harmony label was used solely to release 33rpm long-playing records and like many other budget labels, it was ‘cheap and cheerful'. Harmony however, had the advantage of the entire Columbia back catalogue to draw upon for their compilations. With such an eclectic mix as this, there are riches to be found on every track of our compilation, from Gene Krupa’s jazzy title track to the Carter Family’s traditional closer – a veritable cornucopia of delights.

Jazz Gitan [Gitan is pronounced J’tawn] is an acoustic jazz ensemble that carries on the tradition of gypsy swing created by Django Reinhardt together with Stephane Grappelli during their domination of the Paris jazz scene in the 1930s. The music of Jazz Gitan is the swinging jazz of the 30s and 40s, plus a cross-section of songs from the modern Gypsy Jazz repertoire and Original compositions by lead guitarist/band leader, Don Price. It includes Latin, blues, swing, and original styles combined to create a unique foot tapping and high energy Parisian influenced experience.
Don Price was first taught music by his mother who was a professional musician, performing with players in the 1940-50’s including Hank Garland, Bob Wills, and a host of others. Having grown up on all styles of music, Don has played music ranging from rock, blues, country, swing and jazz, and everything in between. With a degree in music education he is on the recommended teacher’s list for University of Southern California, and a faculty member of the Guitar Activity Institute in California. As a teacher/educator in Jazz Studies Don now offers workshops and clinics in Gypsy Jazz for schools, music stores, and anyone interested in learning about le jazz hot!

In an interview Williams III gave with Rockabilly.net, he said, "I'm not happy with it. I hate it; can't even listen to but maybe two songs on it. I said (to the label) that every damn interview that I do I ain't gonna talk good about it. Curb thinks this album is so different and so alternative. It's a headache."
Hank II owns the music of this album.

Often overlooked, perhaps because he wasn't a great innovator in jazz but merely a stellar performer, tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley was at the peak of his powers on Soul Station. Recorded with a superstar quartet including Art Blakey on drums, Paul Chambers on bass, and Wynton Kelly on piano, it was the first album since Mobley's 1955 debut to feature him as a leader without any other accompanying horns. The clean, uncomplicated sound that resulted from that grouping helps make it the best among his albums and a peak moment during a particularly strong period in his career. Mobley has no problem running the show here, and he does it without being flashy or burying the strong work of his sidemen. The solidness of his technique means that he can handle material that is occasionally rhythmically intricate, while still maintaining the kind of easy roundness and warmth displayed by the best players of the swing era. Two carefully chosen standards, Remember and If I Should Lose You, help to reinforce that impression by casting an eye back to the classic jazz era. They bookend four Mobley originals that, in contrast, reflect the best of small-group composition with their lightness and tight dynamics. Overall, this is a stellar set from one of the more underrated musicians of the bop era.

He jokingly adds” I come from the most musical family that don’t play any instruments” Among his influences he counts, Sonny Clark, Bud Powell, Red Garland, Hank Jones, Jimmy Smith, Bobby Timmons, Keith Jarret, Kenny Barron, Don Pullen, John Hicks, Herbie Hancock Shakes Mgudlwa, Tete Mbambisa and Bheki Mseleku.

This was one performance filled with vitality. Hank in his 80? still touring (recently returning from Japan) arrived bursting with energy and after a long day, was still going strong as he chatted with the jazz students which he had performed and instructed that day. Hank Jones, brother of Elvin Jones (the drummer) and Thad (the cornetist) was born 1918 in Mississippi and raised in Michigan. He was influenced by performers Fat Waller, Earl Hines and Art Tatum and is known for his distinctive swinging style. Hank?first gig was with Hot Lips Page band in 1944, a job Lucky Thompson (the saxophonist) got him. Hank worked as a freelancer with artists such as Artie Shaw, Milt Jackson, Benny Goodman and Julian ?nnonball?dderly. Later Hank joined CBS working as a studio musician for 17 years, working on such programs as The Ed Sullivan Show. Jones also was a member of his brother?co-led orchestra with Mel Lewis beginning in 1966. Because of Jones unique and versatile style, he can be found on many recordings. He has also played piano duos with such greats as Tommy Flanagan, George Shearing and John Lewis.

He was sitting in front of his dressing room mirror after a tiring performance of "Camelot," removing his make-up for the who knows how many thousandth time. Paler, with the greasepaint cleansed from the famous face, he managed to look, simultaneously, handsome, vibrant and worn.
"Richard has been entertaining the idea of doing your show, Mr. Cavett," a man who appeared to be both valet and companion said.
"And letting the idea entertain him," the Welshman intoned in that unmistakable voice.
In fact, Richard Burton was still pondering whether to do my show, and it was thought that my visiting him backstage informally might help.
I tried to imagine what fears or hesitations Burton might have about appearing with me. Could he be afraid that the rich voice, those rugged good looks, the manly erotic charm, the hypnotic blue eyes, the articulacy, the fine wit and the ready storehouse of classical and modern literary quotations and allusions were not quite enough to qualify him for sitting next to Cavett? (Did anyone think, just now, that I was describing myself?)
Could he really think that maybe a boy from Nebraska — who had only been to Yale and not, as he had, Oxford — might outshine all those charms? As my Aunt Eva would say, "The very idea!"
Hoping for the effect of light humor, I said, "I hope I don't frighten you, Mr. Burton."
"No, Mr. Cavett, you do not. I do that to myself."
I liked him immensely.
Even under regression hypnosis, Richard would probably not have recalled how we had briefly met about a quarter of a century earlier when only one of us had a familiar name, but more of that anon.
Memories of that night backstage: Richard's expertly flipping a single, long Marlboro — the mendaciously advertised "light" version — from its box, contemplating it for a moment in a manner that brought to mind an actor holding Yorick's skull, and saying, as if a little embarrassed to be lighting up, "Looks like these lethal goddamn things will be with me to the end of my days."
"And hastening them," I decided not to say. Later, with us knowing each other better, he wouldn't have minded and would have had a wry response.
Then came the best thing.
Leaving the theater by the stage door required crossing the wide New York State Theater stage. The "Camelot' sets had been struck for the night and the house and stage were dark; dark except for the murky bulb in a cage on a stand downstage center — the thing known in the theater world as "the ghost light," an aptly named light that somehow manages to make a vast, dark space seem darker and spookier than it would with no light at all.
What happened next was in the too-good-to-be-true category. Burton stopped near the light, his coat draped over one shoulder, gazed out at the empty house, tilted his head back and, with the famous, full chiming resonance, began, "O for a Muse of fire, that would ascend / The brightest heaven of invention . . . " — and went right on through that ringing prologue to "Henry the Fifth" (known to actors as "Hank Cinq").
Goose flesh manifested.
He was standing no more than a yard from me, and I thought, "Talk about front-row seats!" Unforgettable.
Maybe our meeting did the trick. A day or two later, Burton agreed to do the show. But, sadly, requested that there be no studio audience. I felt sorry for a bunch of strangers I would never meet who would never know what they missed.
You can do a good show without an audience, but I knew from experience that audiences sometimes buoyed guests who at first feared them.
"What if I made a deal with you?" I dared. "Since they already have their tickets, why don't we start with them and if you feel uncomfortable we'll tell them there's a technical problem and we have to stop for that day and see them out?"
This gambit could accomplish one of two things: (a) he would feel sorry for the disappointed folks and relent, or (b) I would learn how to say "bugger off" in Welsh.
He accepted the offer.
