Cross-country skiing (or XC skiing) is a form of ski touring in which participants propel themselves across snow-covered terrain using skis and poles which is popular in many places with large snowfields, primarily Northern Europe, Canada, and Alaska.
Cross-country skiing is part of the Nordic skiing sport family, which includes ski jumping, Nordic combined (cross-country skiing and ski jumping), Biathlon (skiing and rifle marksmanship) and ski-orienteering (which included map navigation along snow trails and tracks). It is related to backcountry skiing and Telemark skiing.
Recreational cross-country skiing is most frequently known as touring. Some skiers stay out for extended periods using tents and equipment similar to bushwalkers/hikers, whereas others take relatively short trips from ski resorts on maintained trails. In some countries, organizations maintain a network of huts for use by cross-country skiers in wintertime. For example, the Norwegian Mountain Touring Association maintains over 400 huts stretching across hundreds of kilometres of trails which are used by hikers in the summer and by skiers in the winter.

Day 1 of our cross country skiing adventure in Kingfield Maine on the Maine Huts & Trails. We escaped the Blizzard of 2015 in CT and got to ski on fresh powder up in Maine. Day 1 we were shuttled to the Flagstaff trailhead by Greg from All Points Transportation. We skied to the Flagstaff Hut for the first night and were treated to a tour of the hut's sustainable energy sources and waste composting.
