Steffi Graf - Best Female Player of 20th Century
Stefanie Maria "Steffi" Graf (born 14 June 1969) is a former World No. 1 German tennis player.
Graf won 22 Grand Slam singles titles. Her 22 singles titles mark the record for most Major wins by a tennis player (male or female) since the introduction of the Open Era in 1968, and is the only player to win at least 4 singles titles at each Grand Slam . In 1988, she became the first and only tennis player (male or female) to achieve the Calendar Year Golden Slam by winning all four Grand Slam singles titles and the Olympic gold medal in the same calendar year.
Graf was ranked World No. 1 by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) for a record 377 total weeks—the longest period for which any player, male or female, has held the number-one ranking since the WTA and the Association of Tennis Professionals began issuing rankings. She won 107 singles titles, which ranks her third on the WTA's all-time list after Martina Navratilova (167 titles) and Chris Evert (157 titles).
A notable feature of Graf's game was her versatility across all playing surfaces, having won each of the four Majors at least four times, the only player to do so, and she is best known for her great footwork and for her powerful forehand drive. Graf won six French Open singles titles (second to Evert) and seven Wimbledon singles titles (third behind Navratilova. She is the only singles player (male or female) to have achieved a Calendar Year Grand Slam while playing on four different types of tennis courts (Rebound Ace, grass, clay and DecoTurf). Graf reached thirteen consecutive Grand Slam singles finals, from the 1987 French Open through to the 1990 French Open, winning nine of them. She won 5 consecutive Majors (1988 Australian Open to 1989 Australian Open), and 7 Majors out of 8, in 2 calendar years (1988 Australian Open to 1989 US Open, except 1989 French Open). She reached a total of 31 Grand Slam singles finals, third overall behind Evert (34 finals) and Navratilova (32 finals).
Graf is regarded by many to be the greatest female tennis player of all time. Billie Jean King said in 1999, "Steffi is definitely the greatest women's tennis player of all time." Navratilova herself has included Graf on her list of great players. In December 1999, Graf was named the greatest female tennis player of the 20th century by a panel of experts assembled by the Associated Press. Tennis writer Steve Flink, in his book The Greatest Tennis Matches of the Twentieth Century, named her as the best female player of the 20th century. In March 2012, Tennis Channel picked Graf as the greatest female tennis player ever in their list of 100 greatest tennis players of all time.
Graf retired in 1999 while she was ranked World No. 3. She married former World No. 1 men's tennis player Andre Agassi in October 2001. The couple have two children – Jaden Gil and Jaz Elle. Graf was inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame in 2004.

Live-Tennis.com Preview - WTA Dubai, ATP Buenos Aires, ATP Memphis, ATP Marseille
Watch all the ATP matches stream live here: http://www.live-tennis.com/category/ATP-Tennis/
Of the elite competitors in women's tennis, only Maria Sharapova has chosen to sit out the Premier tournament in the UAE. World number one Victoria Azarenka, who was forced to pull out of last year's event, will aim to win her first title in Dubai, but if Serena Williams is fully recovered from the ankle injury she sustained at the Australian Open, the rest of the field will consider themselves underdogs.
In 2012, Agnieszka Radwanska produced some of her best tennis to beat Julia Georges in an entertaining final. In doing so, she joined an illustrious list of champions in Dubai. Martina Hingis, Amelie Mauresmo and Lindsay Davenport each won the title when it was classed as a Tier II event, while Venus Williams won back-to-back trophies in 2009 and 2010. Justine Henin holds the record for most titles in Dubai, having won four times from 2003 - 2007.
Played at the city's Aviation Club, the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships are one of the most popular annual sporting events in the Middle East, and regularly attract huge crowds.
The ATP will head to Marseille next week for another edition of the Open 13, one of France's five top-level tennis tournaments. This ATP World Tour 250 Series event is a popular competition, especially with European and French players. This is reflected in the fact that six French players have won the title in Marseille since the inaugural year in 1993.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Richard Gasquet and Gilles Simon lead the home nation's charge this time around. Tsonga has a big game that should make him a real title contender here, though his struggles to get the better of top-ten opposition could be a concern. Simon, meanwhile, won plenty of admirers with his marathon victory over Gael Monfils in Melbourne, and is good enough to challenge.
Gasquet is perhaps France's main man though. The talented world No. 10's talents have been talked about for years, and his 14-1 match record for 2013 suggests that he might be able to start matching the hype that followed him in the early stages of his career. Whilst he actually lost against Tsonga at this year's Australian Open, Gasquet's Doha and Montpellier titles are worth taking into account.
That said, there are several international stars who are in with a shout. Defending champ Juan Martin Del Potro will be returning to Marseille next week with intentions of winning his first title of the year. He's only competed at the Australian Open this season, where he lost in round three in a five-setter against Jeremy Chardy.
World No. 6 Tomas Berdych will also be here and he'll be the top seed. He's competed in this event five times but surprisingly has never been beyond the quarter-finals. His game is well-suited to indoor hardcourt tennis so maybe he can finally improve on this. Janko Tipsarevic, a former semi-finalist, should also be in with a chance.
The ATP will be back in Buenos Aires next week for the Copa Claro, one of South America's premier clay court tennis events. Defending champion David Ferrer will be back to fight for his title, but he'll have to break down a strong resistance from Argentine hopefuls. The home nation has provided finalists in 9 of the 11 editions of this tournament.
Ferrer will surely be the favourite here. The world No. 4 won the ATP Auckland title in January, and also reached the semi-finals in Doha and at the Australian Open this year. With none of the top three in attendance, the man known as 'the wall' should be able to succeed if he's at his best.
Ferrer's compatriot Nicolas Almagro will be another serious contender. He was the runner-up at this event last year and boasts a 16-6 record at the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club. We should also keep an eye out for Stanislas Wawrinka, Thomaz Bellucci and Pablo Andujar.
Argentina's David Nalbandian will spearhead the Argentine charge. The 2008 champion is ranked just inside the top hundred, but missed a fair amount of the 2012 season with an abdominal injury. He could be in with a decent chance next week.

The 28-year-old won her third successive doubles title with Hingis, following triumphs in Indian Wells and Miami, to achieve the top ranking milestone.
"When you start off as a child playing tennis, you dream of being No.1 in the world. It's a dream for every person; very few get there. I feel extremely honoured to be No.1, it's something that I've worked for all my life," Mirza said in a statement on Sunday.
"I hope this makes girls in India believe that anything is possible; we can achieve anything we want if we put our mind and body to it."
Mirza had once been tipped for success as a singles player after she became the first Indian to win a WTA singles title in 2005. She followed up her success in her hometown of Hyderabad by reaching the fourth round of the US Open in 2005 and two years later broke into the top 30.
But from then on her singles career went into freefall, with injuries taking a toll.
On the doubles court, however, her career prospered as she became the first Indian woman to claim a grand slam title when she partnered Mahesh Bhupathi to the 2009 Australian Open mixed doubles crown.
"It is a truly remarkable accomplishment for Sania Mirza to become the first Indian woman to reach the WTA World No.1 doubles ranking," WTA Chairman and CEO Stacey Allaster said.
"Sania has attained many milestones throughout her successful career and this achievement is a fitting recognition of her talent, dedication and success."
"I am sure Sania will continue to create history and inspire our ever-growing fan base in India and the wider Asia-Pacific region."
Only three other Asian women have achieved the top WTA doubles ranking: Japan's Ai Sugiyama, China's Peng Shuai and Taiwan's Hsieh Su-wei.
Leander Paes and Bhupathi are the only other Indians to achieve number one rankings in tennis when they dominated men's doubles in the late 1990s.

The event was introduced in the 2012/2013 season and was the fifth ranking event held in China.[2] It was named as the "first overseas 'major'", because the tournament had the same level of ranking points as the UK Championship.[3] The event had the biggest prize money ever for an Asian snooker tournament.
The snooker world rankings are the official system of ranking professional snooker players to determine automatic qualification and seeding for tournaments on the World Snooker Tour. They are maintained by the sport's governing body, the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association. A player's ranking is based on their performances in designated ranking tournaments over the preceding two years, and it is updated after every tournament. The world rankings were inaugurated in the 1976/1977 season and the point tariffs used to be set by the governing body, but the rankings transitioned to a prize money list in the 2014/2015 season.

Background[edit]
The rankings determine the seedings for tournaments on the World Snooker Tour, organised by the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association, and who gets an invite to prestigious invitational events. Tournaments open to the membership are often played in two stages—a qualification stage and the "venue stage"—usually at different locations. In tournaments with a "tiered" format players come into events in different rounds based on their ranking, and in some cases the top players in the sport are seeded through to the venue stage and do not have to play a qualification match. In particular, the top 16 ranked players automatically qualify for the final stages of the World Championship and the Masters, so as well as interest in who will be number one, there is typically a lot of interest in which players are likely to maintain or acquire "top 16 status". Players are awarded ranking points according to the round they reach in ranking tournaments—specially designated tournaments that carry ranking status. Every professional member of the WPBSA is assigned a ranking, whether they are active on the circuit or not.[1][2][3]
