The two victories over the Japanese, which took place in the same region of north east India over the same period in 1944, were voted the winner of a contest run by the National Army Museum to identify “Britain’s Greatest Battle”.
Taken as a single victory, Imphal-Kohima was on a shortlist of five battles which topped a public poll and on Saturday, they were selected as the ultimate winner by an audience of more than 100 guests at a special event at the museum, in Chelsea, west London. Imphal-Kohima received almost half of all votes.
In second place was D-Day and Normandy, in 1944 (25 per cent), ahead of Waterloo, in 1815, (22 per cent), Rorke’s Drift, during the Zulu War in 1879 (three per cent), and Aliwal, during the First Sikh War in 1846 (two per cent).
At the event, each contender had their case made by a historian giving a 40 minute presentation. The audience, who had paid to attend the day, then voted in a secret ballot after all five presentations had been made.
The case for Imphal and Kohima was made by Dr Robert Lyman, an author and Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.

“I had thought that one of the bigger names like D-Day or Waterloo would win so I am delighted that Imphal-Kohima has won. You have got to judge the greatness of a battle by its politcal, cultural and social impact, as much as its military impact.
“Imphal and Kohima were really significant for a number of reasons, not least that they showed that the Japanese were not invincible and that that they could be beaten, and beaten well. The victories demonstrate this more than the US in the Pacific, where they were taking them on garrison by garrison.”
The contest aimed to gauge the battles in terms of their historical impact and the tactics employed.
The battles of Imphal and Kohima saw the British and Indian forces, under the overall command of Lieutenant-General William Slim, repel the Japanese invasion of India and helped turned the tide of the war in the Far East.
Some veterans of the battles and historians have felt the victories have since been overlooked, partly because the invasion of Europe, starting with D-Day, took place while they were still being fought.
The fight for Imphal went on longer than that for Kohima, lasting from March until July.
Kohima was smaller in scale, and shorter, from April to June - but the fighting was so intense it has been described as the Stalingrad of the East.
In one sector, only the width of the town’s tennis court separated the two sides. When on 18 April the relief forces of the British 2nd Division arrived, the defensive perimeter was reduced to a shell-shattered area only 350 metres square.
The Japanese, who fought alongside some Indian nationalists, eventually lost 53,000 dead and missing in the battles. The British forces sustained 12,500 casualties at Imphal while the fighting at Kohima cost them another 4,000 casualties.
There are several memorials to the British and Indian troops who fought in the area, including one with an inscription that has become famous as the ‘Kohima Epitaph’. It reads: “When You Go Home, Tell Them Of Us And Say, For Your Tomorrow, We Gave Our Today’
After their defensive victory, the British went on to clear the Japanese from Burma.
The format for the contest - an online poll followed by a closed vote - was devised by the National Army Museum to avoid orchestrated bloc voting, reducing the risk that a battle could win simply thanks to an organised campaign by a specific part of the community or a national group.
A similar contest, held by the museum last year, to identify Britain’s “greatest foe”, saw a surge of online support for Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, after it was featured on a Turkish website.
The Turkish leader topped the first poll, before the contest was eventually won, after the debate stage, by George Washington.
Imphal and Kohima came fifth in the online vote, which was topped by Waterloo.

On 7 December 1941 the Japanese attacked the US naval base at Pearl Harbour and later declared war on Britain and the United States. In the days and weeks that followed the Japanese invaded European colonies across East Asia, including the British territories of Hong Kong, Malaya, Singapore and Burma. The purpose of these campaigns was to create a fortified perimeter around a self-sufficient Japan, which could be defended until the Allies tired of the war.
The British had long thought a Japanese land invasion of Burma unlikely so its defences had been neglected. When the attack began in January 1942 the British position quickly deteriorated and by early March the capital Rangoon and its vital port had been lost. As the Japanese pushed northwards, the surviving Allied troops under General Sir Harold Alexander carried out a five-month fighting retreat to India across 1,000 miles (1,600km) of difficult terrain.
In November 1943 a new phase of the war in the Far East began with the formation of South East Asia Command (SEAC) under Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten. SEAC replaced India Command in control of operations and under its leadership the prosecution of the war took on a new energy. Previously, British troops had fallen back when the Japanese cut their lines of communication, and operations had practically ceased during the monsoon. Now the policy was to stand firm and rely on air supply when cut off, and to fight on through the harshest conditions.
In March 1944 the Japanese 15th Army began an advance against India's north-east frontier to forestall a planned British invasion of Burma. They intended to capture the British supply bases on the Imphal Plain and cut the road linking Dimapur and Imphal at Kohima. With Imphal in their hands, the Japanese would also be able to interrupt air supplies to China. It would also give them a base from which to conduct air attacks against India. A Japanese diversionary attack in the Arakan was defeated at the battle of the Admin Box, but in early April the troops at Kohima and Imphal were surrounded.

The Cathedral is located on Aradura Hill in Kohima. It is one of the biggest cathedrals in North East India. Its splendid architecture makes it one of the important landmarks of Kohima. The unique design created by blending the traditional with the orthodox resulted in an architectural marvel. It is also home to the largest cross that is made of wood in the country. The magnificent crucifix is carved in wood and is 16 ft high, possibly one of the tallest wooden carved crucifixes in Asia. The Stations of the Cross posed in the main entrance is a special beautiful feature. It is the presentation of Jesus' final journey with the cross, the last journey to Calvary. The fourteen stations, pose a real replica to the faithful with its beautiful arrangement on the slope of the hill leading up to the Cathedral.
The Cathedral was inaugurated on the day of the Un's day of settlement. The Cathedral at this part of India has a very pleasant atmosphere for prayer and worship. The Catholic Cathedral in Kohima is a place worth seeing for its ideal blend of indigenous structural design.architectural might and complexity is a surprise. The semicircular building with its modern architectural thinking covers one side of the Araduura hill with every bit of construction planned in detail with no space wasted. Its façade is shaped like a traditional Naga House. A complete structure, including official and residential rooms!
The Cathedral owes its existence to Lt. Rev. Abraham Alnagimattathil, whose brain child this Cathedral is. He was the first bishop of Nagaland and he wanted to provide a place for all to pray and spend time in solitude with the self and the Divine.
The actual work began in 1986 and the dedication and consecration of the church was done in 1991. The lion's share of the three crore financial expense came from Japanese, who wished the church to be a place of prayer especially for the Japanese war victims who laid down their lives for their nation in the Second World War battle fought in Kohima. This is affirmed in the prayer inscribed in English & Japanese script in the Cathedral Campus. "...It is with thankfulness that we heard that Catholic Cathedral was being built at Kohima, where mass would be offered every morning in memory of the fallen..."

Bara basti is the old village which was the origin of Kohima. Bara basti means large village and it has a uniqueness of its own.
Kohima About this sound pronunciation is the hilly capital of India's north eastern border state of Nagaland which shares its borders with Burma. It lies in Kohima District and is one of the three Nagaland towns with Municipal council status along with Dimapur and Mokokchung.
Kohima is the land of the Angami Naga tribe. The name, Kohima, was officially given by the British as they could not pronounce the Angami name Kewhima or Kewhira (Tenyidie for "the land where the flower Kewhi grows"). It is called after the wild flowering plant Kewhi, found in the mountains. Earlier, Kohima was also known as Thigoma. Kohima is located south of Kohima District (25.67°N 94.12°E)[1] and has an average elevation of 1261 metres (4137 feet).[2] The town of Kohima is located on the top of a high ridge and the town serpentines along the top of the mountain ranges as is typical of most Naga settlements.
Nagaland is a state in the far north-eastern part of India. It borders the state of Assam to the west, Arunachal Pradesh and part of Assam to the north, Myanmar to the east and Manipur to the south. The state capital is Kohima, and the largest city is Dimapur. It has an area of 16,579 km2 with a population of 1,980,602 as per the 2011 census, making it one of the smallest states of India. The state is mostly mountainous except those areas bordering Assam valley. Mount Saramati is the highest peak with a height of 3,840 metres and its range forms a natural barrier between Nagaland and Burma. It lies between the parallels of 98-degree and 96-degree East Longitude and 26.6-degree and 27.4-degree latitude north of the equator.
Nagaland was established on 1 December 1963 to be the 16th state of the Indian Union. It is divided into eleven districts: Kohima, Phek, Mokokchung, Wokha, Zunheboto, Tuensang, Mon, Dimapur, Kiphire, Longleng and Peren. Its native inhabitants are the Naga tribes. Agriculture is the most important economic activity and the principal crops include rice, corn, millets, pulses, tobacco, oilseeds, sugarcane, potatoes and fibres. Other significant economic activity includes forestry, tourism, insurance, real estate, and miscellaneous cottage industries. It is also known as the "falcon capital of the world".

Band from Darjeeling Adams Apple performed their orginal composed song 'Till the end' during the International Hornbill Rock Contest at Indira Gandhi Stadium in Kohima, Nagaland. Adams Apple band were the winner of Hornbill Rock Contest 2014.
As winter slowly penetrates the hilly state of Nagaland, in North East India, a festive mood seeps into the valleys.
There is a buzz in the air. This is the sound of Nagaland preparing for the Hornbill Festival held in the first week of December every year.
The Festival is named after a bird greatly admired by the Naga people for its alertness and grandeur. The bird, the hornbill is mentioned in much of the folklore of Nagaland.
The festival takes place at the Naga Heritage Village in Kisama, not too far from Kohima. The village is a microcosm of each of the Naga tribes. Tourists are welcomed warmly to the traditional huts of each tribe, where one can sit with the elderly people of the tribe and share stories. Each morung or tribal hut, houses that particular tribe's own cuisine with the ever-present rice beer being sold to visitors as well. Even though the elders do not speak English, the younger members of the tribe can act as translators. The Hornbill Festival offers a window to the great, age-old culture and traditions of Nagaland.
The Nagas, traditionally known for their kind and friendly manner open their lives every year in an attempt to showcase the best the region has to offer. Comprising of seventeen different tribes, all differentiated by their traditional attire, food and folk dances, demonstrate their rich culture and traditions at the Hornbill Festival.
The festival attracts a large number of tourists, and has become larger and more popular over the years.
Various types of meats, in all forms, whether roasted, dried or smoked are available in traditional Naga style. The ultimate in Naga cuisine is traditional rice-beer; this is a must for all visitors. The night bazaar is a big hit with families, friends and visitors alike -- where all kinds of Naga traditional crafts, food items, stationary and of course Naga King chilli pickle can be found. The bamboo pavilion is made entirely of bamboo and is the main souvenir shop. It completes the Naga package.
Another event, true to the region was the traditional stone pulling ceremony of the Angami tribe at Kigwema village. Many gathered, both young and old, dressed in traditional attire to take part in the ceremony which brought the highway to a standstill for the duration of the ceremony .The ceremony concluded with victory dances and a community feast.
Various competitions take place during the Hornbill Festival. They range from Naga wrestling, chilly eating competitions -- with the fiery King Chilli! The Pork eating competition, the traditional fire making competition, greased pole climbing and for the younger ones. The International Hornbill Rock Contest created a platform for many artists and musicians.
An initiative was taken to preserve this rich cultural heritage of the Nagas, to bring unity among the various tribes and to boast tourism in the region, and so the Hornbill Festival was born.

View of Khonoma village, Nagaland. It is the first green village in India.
As part of the 'Khonoma Green Village Project' (KGVP) supported by the Union Ministry of Tourism and Culture, eco-tourism is being promoted in Khonoma village. CEE is one of the agencies involved in conducting environmental impact assessment (EIA) to avoid any environmental damage that may happen because of tourism. Guidelines, codes of conduct and environmental indicators are being worked out before the tourist flow starts.
Khonoma, an Angami Naga village in Nagaland, situated 21 km west of Kohima is endowed with rich forest cover and rare biodiversity. CEE started working in Khonoma way back in 1994, soon after the launch of CEE North-East in 1993. As the interest of the people grew in CEE's programmes, the modest environmental awareness was scaled up and projects like BAIDIK (Biodiversity Awareness Integration through Documentation of Indigenous Knowledge), NEEPS (National Environment Education Programmes for Schools) and Darwin Initiative (Conserving India's Biodiversity through NGO training and Projects with Local communities) were taken up by CEE in Khonoma. The interventions helped strengthen capacities of the local community.
As a result of environmental awareness created Khonoma has reserved about 70 sq km of its village forest as 'Khonoma Nature Conservation and Tragopan Sanctuary' (KNCTS). The formation of KNCTS is a remarkable achievement. The 'Village Council' of Khonoma (the apex governing body of the village) since 1998 has banned hunting not only in KNCTS but in the entire forest area of the village. KNCTS is a unique example of the community initiative for wildlife and environment conservation
Recently, the Union Ministry of Tourism and Culture, through the Nagaland State Department of Tourism has provided support to initiate KGVP for the development of eco-tourism using the resources of KNCTS and the cultural heritage of Khonoma. This is first of its kind project in the country. Many other agencies have also extended support to this initiative.
A 2-day workshop on various aspects of the Khonoma EIA study was organized by 'Khonoma Tourism Development Board' (KTDB) at Khonoma where CEE and two other agencies were invited to share the EIA study. The rationale, objective, methodology followed and important highlights of the Khonoma EIA study were discussed in the workshop. Some basic indicators to be adopted for the monitoring and impact assessment process were explained.
Some of the recommendations of the study are: to have a strong monitoring system and reduce or minimize negative impacts of tourism; to continue the EIA study process from time to time; to encourage the entire village to give inputs into the EIA study data body, especially in terms of traditions and legends; documentation and development of the legends of Khonoma; documentation of history of Khonoma; identification and development of Unique Selling Propositions (USP) of Khonoma (these may be some birds and plant species, agriculture, monsoon, crop harvesting); designing packages for tourism in Khonoma with detailed itinerary; organizing village youth as tourist guides, imparting them necessary training, sending them out for more professional training and exposure; selling local products, i.e., handicraft and handloom; inviting members of the travel media to come, experience and write on Khonoma, to popularize it as a tourist destination etc.
