A dewclaw is a digit – vestigial in some animals – on the foot of many mammals, birds, and reptiles (including some extinct orders, like certain theropods). It commonly grows high on the leg such that in digitigrade species, when the animal is standing, it does not make contact with the ground. On dogs a dewclaw is on the inside of the leg, positioned analogously to a human thumb.
Dogs always have dewclaws on the inside of the front legs and occasionally also on the hind legs. Unlike front dewclaws, rear dewclaws tend to have little bone or muscle structure in most breeds. It is normal, although not biologically necessary, that certain breeds will have more than one dewclaw on the same paw. At least one of these dewclaws will be poorly connected to the leg, and in this case it is often surgically removed. When a dog has extra dewclaws in addition to the usual one on each front leg, the dog is said to be double dewclawed. There is some debate about whether a dewclaw helps dogs to gain traction when they run because in some dogs, the dewclaw makes contact when they are running and the nail on the dewclaw often wears down in the same way that the nails on their other toes do, from contact with the ground. In many dogs the dewclaws never contact the ground. In this case, the dewclaw's nail never wears away, and it is often trimmed to maintain it at a safe length.
This video shows how dogs use their dew claws to get themselves safely out of icy waters; whether they are in there intentionally to make a retrieve, or they have accidentally broken thru the ice and are in a dangerous situation.

The Pooch Parlor Pet Groomer Academy tapes a shih tzu that has previously been kept up by the owner. The owner did not know how to clip the dewclaws (on the back legs) and they became imbedded (grew into) the pads. Learn how curly dewclaws look when they grow into the nail bed, how to clip them, and how to treat the infected hole that is left on the pad. www.thepoochparlor.net in Ponderay, Idaho.
Dogs are castrated to reduce agressive or fearful aggressive behavior. Castration too early may not allow for full development of muscles, ligaments, and joints. Working, showing, running, and retrieving dogs may benefit by waiting till one year old to castrate. Dewclaws are removed if loose, floppy, and prone to injury.

Got nine million nine hundred ninety nine thousand nine hundred ninety nine tears to go
And then I don't know if I'll be over you
The sun didn't shine this morning it's been raining the whole day through
Suddenly without warning you found somebody new
That's when the first tear came falling from my eyes
I'm beginning to feel the pain seeing nothing but cloudy skies
Got nine million nine hundred...
Well I'll be over you
You're out tonight with your new love I'm far far from your mind
Trying to get over you love chould take a whole lifetime
I can't believe you could want anybody else so no one could take my place
At least that's what I keep telling myself as the tears fall down my face
