The "water deer" is a small deer superficially more similar to a musk deer than a true deer. Native to China and Korea, there are two subspecies: the "Chinese water deer" and the "Korean water deer" . Despite its lack of antlers and certain other anatomical anomalies—including a pair of prominent tusks , it is classified as a cervid. Its unique anatomical characteristics have caused it to be classified in its own genus as well as its own subfamily . However, a study of mitochondrial cytochrome b sequences placed it near "Capreolus" within an Old World section of the subfamily Capreolinae. Its prominent tusks , similar to those of musk deer, have led to both being colloquially named "vampire deer" in English-speaking areas to which they have been imported.
Water deer are indigenous to the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, coastal Jiangsu province , and islands of Zhejiang of east-central China, and in Korea, where the demilitarized zone has provided a protected habitat for a large number. They inhabit the land alongside rivers, where they are protected from sight by the tall reeds and rushes. They are also seen on mountains, swamps, grasslands, and even open cultivated fields. Water deer are proficient swimmers, and can swim several miles to reach remote river islands. Chinese Water Deer are now located in United Kingdom, France and Argentina, and even some in the United States.
Chinese water deer were first introduced into Great Britain in the 1870s. The animals were kept in the London Zoo until 1896, when Herbrand Russell oversaw their transferral to Woburn Abbey, Bedfordshire. More of the animals were imported and added to the herd over the next three decades. In 1929 and 1930, 32 deer were transferred from Woburn to Whipsnade, also in Bedfordshire, and released into the park. The current population of Chinese water deer at Whipsnade is currently estimated to be more than 600, while the population at Woburn is probably in excess of 250.

The "pudús" are two subspecies of South American deer from the genus "Pudu", and are the world's smallest deer. The name is a loanword from Mapudungun, the language of the indigenous Mapuche people of southern Chile. The two species of pudús are the northern pudú from Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, and the southern pudú from southern Chile and southwestern Argentina. Pudús range in size from 32 to tall, and up to 85 cm long. As of 2009, both species are classified as "Endangered" in the IUCN Red List.
The genus "Pudu" was first erected by English naturalist John Edward Gray in 1850. "Pudua" was a Latinized version of the name proposed by Alfred Henry Garrod in 1877, but was ruled invalid. Pudús are classified in the New World deer subfamily Capreolinae within the deer family Cervidae. The term "pudú" itself is derived from the Mapuche people of southern Chile. Because they live on the slopes of the Andes Mountain Range, they are also known as the "Chilean mountain goat".
Two similar species of pudús are recognised:
The pudús are the world's smallest deer, with the southern pudú being slightly larger than the northern pudú. It has a stocky frame supported by four short and slender legs. It is 32 to high at the shoulder and up to 85 cm in length. Pudús normally weigh up to 12 kg, but the highest recorded weight of a pudú is 13.4 kg. Pudús have small, black eyes, black noses, and rounded ears with lengths of 7.5 to. Sexual dimorphism in the species includes an absence of antlers in females. Males have short, spiked antlers that are not forked, as seen in most species of deer. The antlers, which are shed annually, can extend from 6.5 to in length and protrude from between the ears. Also on the head are large preorbital glands. Pudús have small hooves, dewclaws, and short tails about 4.0 to in length when measured without hair. Coat coloration varies with season, gender, and individual genes. The fur is long and stiff, typically pressed close to the body, with a reddish-brown to dark-brown hue. The neck and shoulders of an aged pudú turn a dark gray-brown in the winter.
