Management Commentary
"The third quarter was a record quarter, driven by our successful execution efforts for launching and marketing our products, as well as through supporting our leaders in developing effective sales techniques," commented Chris Sharng, President of Natural Health Trends Corp. "Our record third quarter revenue and net income both posted significant sequential increases and more than doubled versus the third quarter last year. Strengthened consumer demand for our products in China, coupled with strong growth in our active member base helped contribute to this impressive growth."
Mr. Sharng continued, "We were very pleased to report that we have initiated the process for submitting a direct-selling license application in the Chinese province of Guangdong. We are hopeful that a license will enable us to drive incremental growth by leveraging our growing brand recognition in China as well as our Hong Kong distribution infrastructure. As we are still very early in this process, timing for obtaining our direct-selling license remains uncertain. In the interim, we will remain highly focused on managing all aspects of our core business that are within our control."

Recently( In fact yesterday ) the income tax department has newly introduced EVC i.e electronic validation code for electronically validating your filed return so that you don't have to send the Filed Returns to the tax department !
Earlier , individuals were required to send send acknowledgements for filed returns to the tax department. Now , they are no longer required and they can validate their return electronically using several outlined methods
(1) Using Aaadhar card
In this method , you first are required to link Aadhar to the Income tax database website first .Once successful linking is done ,
Then for all filed returns , you can e verify the same using Aadhar OTP
Basically when you register Aadhar , you register a certain mobile number
Once the aadhar is linked and you decide to use the Verify option for E Aadhar , then on the Aadhar registered mobile number a OTP(one time password comes)
You are then required to punch in this One time password in the slot and that's it . Your return has been verified
If you have filed multiple returns ...say original , revised etc etc
then in your dashboard when you go to E verify returns , you will see all the friends there
To the right of each such return there will be a e verify link
As you click on it for each such e verification , you will get a One time password
You are required to provide the separate OTP's indvidually for each return !
And voila , your return gets validated ! The acknowledgement which gets generated is therefore electronically validated and need not be send to the department !
After filing , during submission of return stage itself ,this options are available so that assessee can decide whether to validate or still generate unvalidated acknowledgement and sign and send that to the department
(2) Case - 2 Using net banking
Much simpler , much faster
The department understands that not everyone has Aadhar and so has opened up E validation to bring in those people who atleast have net banking in listed banks shown in the tax website
Here when you log in internet banking , you will see the option of logging into income tax website .There again a one time password will come to your mail
Once you provide that one time password (code) ,it will take you to the same income tax website that you are so used to seeing
Now , again go to the dashboard and click on e verify returns and your friends (filed returns ) with acknowledgement numbers shall get displayed
But here when you click e verify , thats practically it
The validation is complete and you can download the validated acknowledgement right there !
Wonderful isn't it !
(3) People who don't have internet banking can also opt for EVC sent to their registered mail id and mobile number and that can be used , however i understand that it is for income less than 5 lakhs and no refund case ( or some crap )
There are a few more methods , i have practically demonstrated the Aadhar method of validating electronically filed returns
The old days of priting the acknowledgement , filling them up , going to the post office and sending them by speed or ordinary post are finally gone ....(still alive for those who hate technology )
So what are you waiting for , go ahead , electronically validate your filed return using code generated through any of the options Aadhar /netbanking /ATM/registered email and mobile !
Share the knowledge !
Cheers ,
Amlan Dutta.

Unlevered Free Cash Flow Calculation in a Discounted Cash Flow Model

Learn why Unlevered Free Cash Flow is important, how to calculate it, and the difference between Levered and Unlevered FCF.
By http://breakingintowallstreet.com/ "Financial Modeling Training And Career Resources For Aspiring Investment Bankers"
You'll see a real-world example of how to calculate it for Steel Dynamics, a steel manufacturer. Here's an outline of what we'll cover in this lesson...
1. Why is Unlevered Free Cash Flow AKA Free Cash Flow to Firm So Important?
Measures cash flow generated by core business...
On recurring, predictable basis...
And it ignores capital structure - i.e. no net interest expense, debt repayments, etc.
So it's arguably the best, most "neutral" view of how much cash a company really generates, resulting in use in the DCF.
And it's easier to project than other metrics, such as Levered FCF - need cash/debt/interest/principal projections for that.
Other metrics such as EPS or EBITDA/EBIT arguably better for comparison, but Unlevered FCF is best for "measure of core business value."
2. What is Unlevered Free Cash Flow?
Try to replicate the Cash Flow Statement, but ignore / exclude certain items... anything non-recurring, non-core-business, or capital structure-related.
Think about it this way rather than memorizing a long and complicated formula - understanding the concept always beats rote memorization.
Basically you're taking the CFO section, removing net interest expense and tax impact, but keeping most other recurring items...
Then, you exclude most of CFI except for CapEx, and exclude all of the CFF section.
3. How Do You Calculate Unlevered FCF?
Instead of starting with normal Net Income as you would at the top of any Cash Flow Statement, you exclude net interest expense and recalculate based on Operating Income Times 1 Minus the Effective Tax Rate.
Called NOPAT, or Net Operating Profit After Taxes.
Then, make non-cash adjustments... D&A; is most common, but can also have Stock-Based Compensation, Deferred Taxes, and so on.
Then, Change in Working Capital - best to estimate each item individually to capture real cash flow impact, but can estimate as % of revenue as well.
Basic idea is: When this business grows, do we need to put additional cash in to help it grow? Or does the growth itself actually generate cash?
Most of the time, you are looking at Current Assets except for Cash and Current Liabilities except for Debt here... but it varies by company and you have to follow what they do.
One common exception is Long-Term Deferred Revenue - that shows up under the Change in Working Capital section, even though it's not a Current Liability - because it IS related to the company's operations, and NOT its investing or financing activities.
Then, subtract CapEx at the end because that represents re-investment in the company's business... and it's required for almost all companies.
Better to estimate using PP&E; schedule, but can approximate using % of revenue approach - generally not too far off.
4. What's Next After Calculating Unlevered FCF?
Finish the rest of the model!
Calculate Discount Rate, Cost of Equity, WACC, etc., and apply that to calculate NPV of cash flows...
Calculate Terminal Value and discount that to its NPV as well.
Better scenarios / assumptions for many of the #s here, such as revenue growth, margins, CapEx, etc.
Calculate implied share price and sensitivities at the end.

Lecture 3: The Income Statement
Professor Carolyn Levine
The Income Statement is a very useful statement to provide information to the investors in order for them to figure out important information about the future of that specific company. There are limits to the Income Statement. Fox example, things that cannot be reliably measured cannot be part of the statement even though they might be an important financial aspect of the company. Revenues, Expenses, Gains and Losses are different things that will be found on an Income Statement, and these subjects are also discussed in depth in this video. There are great exercises in this video to aid in learning.
The income statement is useful because it provides information about past performance and judges whether or not top executives have made good decisions. Information about income allows us to forecast future income (since the past is a good indicator of future), forecast future cash flows (income is calculated using accrual accounting and helpful for predicting future cash flows) which is the driver of value, and also helps us evaluate risks and uncertainty.
However, there are limits to its usefulness. If the information is insufficiently imprecise, it is omitted from the income statement. This can be the exclusion of revenue that cannot be reliably measured or expenses that cannot be measured. There is also the fact that there is a lot of flexibility and different judgement and perspectives about accounting. Different methods of accounting can result in different reported income.
Earnings is the most forecasted, discussed, and disclosed value. Princes move when firms meet, beat, or miss Wall Street consensus forecasts (i.e. analysts predictions). Options are based on stock prices, and bonuses are awarded directly on earnings. This, unfortunately, gives the less ethical managers incentives to manipulate income via earnings management, earnings smoothing, and manipulating downward (to have a "cookie jar reserve" in case they run into a bad period in the future).
Revenues are inflows of assets, or reduction in liabilities generated through central, ongoing operations such as sales, fees, interest, dividends, and rent revenues. Gains increase net assets from peripheral activities, such as sale of investments or plant assets, settlement of liabilities, favorable litigation awards, and gains on sales of marketable securities.
Expenses are outflows of assets or incurrences of liabilities generated by central, ongoing operations such as cost of goods sold, depreciation expense, interest expense, rent expense, and salary expense. Losses decrease net assets from peripheral activities, such as sale of PPE or investments, sale of marketable securities, unfavorable litigation judgment, natural disaster, early extinguishment of debt, and asset impairment.
The single step income statement shows that revenues less expenses equals net income. Revenues and gains are lumped together, while expenses and losses are lumped together. There is no distinction between operating (core) and non-operating (non-core) events. There is no distinction between recurring and one-time events, either.
The multistep income statement is more useful than the single step income statement. It separates operating transactions from non-operating transactions. It begins with the core, recurring activities and followed by non-core and non-recurring activities. It matches costs and expenses with related revenues, and for each revenue item, associated expenses follow directly. It highlights certain intermediate components of income that analysts use, such as gross margin, operating income, EBITDA, EBIT, and EBT. It has an operating section, a nonoperating section, and an income tax section.
