IUCN Lao PDR, with support from the IUCN Environmental Law Centre, focussed on undertaking a situation analysis in the Xe Champhone Ramsar Site in central Lao PDR, Savannakhet Province. It examined the under-researched issue of customary law governing natural resources, including the relationship between customary law and statutory law. In 2014, IUCN Lao PDR, under the Mekong Water Dialogues project, worked on producing a short documentary film through recorded interviews with villagers and ritual masters of different villages, to visually complement the report of the findings of this study published in 2013. The overall goal of the study was to ensure the protection and sustainable use of natural resources in the Xe Champhone Ramsar site, with regulations that are appropriate locally and in the national context of Lao PDR.

Snow leopard range encompasses 2 million square kilometers spread across twelve central Asian countries. The big cats are currently found in Afghanistan, Bhutan, China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan; with 60% of their habitat occurring in China alone.

2014 IUCN World Parks Congress
Sydney’s global appeal combined with Australia’s world-class nature and wildlife were key factors that saw the doubling of delegates to 6,000 attendees for the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) World Parks Congress.
Held from 12 to 19 November, at Sydney Olympic Park, the IUCN World Parks Congress focused on sharing knowledge and setting the agenda for conserving the world’s natural environment. The event, which is held every 10 years, was secured by Business Events Sydney and hosted by Parks Australia and the New South Wales (NSW) National Parks and Wildlife Service, with support from the NSW and Australian Governments.
Ambassador of the 2014 IUCN World Parks Congress and former head of Parks Australia, Peter Cochrane, who was instrumental in securing the meeting for Sydney, adds further that Australia’s strong global role in environmental conservation was also a strong reason why the country secured the event, with many countries looking to Australia for ideas and action.
In keeping with the congress themes and subject matter, the event was held at Sydney Olympic Park, about 10 kilometres from the central business district, which was once home to the city’s brickworks, an abattoir and waste area. It now incorporates 430 hectares of parklands, extensive sporting and event facilities, hotels, apartments, and a growing list of corporate head offices.
The majority of the congress was held within the park at Sydney Showground and its range of venues and spaces with the welcome reception, exhibition, plenaries, workshops and even a final night casual barbecue all hosted on the extensive footprint.
Prior to meetings, delegates were invited to take guided restoration ecology walks, wetland tours, bird watching tours, or hire a bike for a ride around the precinct.
The week-long congress concluded with the unveiling of ‘`The Promise of Sydney’ - a strategy that almost guarantees the implementation of policies that will lead to a better, greener world.

Maryland Carey Law’s Environmental Law Program was well represented at the 13th Annual Colloquium of the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law, in Jakarta, Indonesia, September 7-12, 2015. Professor and Program Director Robert Percival, two Maryland Carey Law students and a recent graduate, were among 200 environmental law scholars from nearly 50 countries making presentations at the event.
The theme of this year’s colloquium was “Forest and Marine Biodiversity.” In his presentation on “The Intellectual Heritage of George Perkins Marsh: Forest Preservation and the Roots of Global Environmental Law,” Percival explored the impact of Marsh’s 1864 book “The Earth as Modified by Human Action,” which helped launch a global movement to establish protected areas.
Second-year student Renée Lani examined how the Lacey Act has been used to discourage importation of illegally harvested timber,
3L Maryann Hong discussed the impact of free trade agreements on global tobacco control efforts and Taylor Kasky ‘15 considered the impact of trade liberalization on global agriculture and food security in her presentation.
Lani, Hong, and Kasky were able to participate in the Colloquium as Fedder Scholars through the generosity of the Fedder Environmental Fund. At a plenary session of the Colloquium on September 9, Percival presented a video tribute honoring the late Joel D. Fedder ‘58, who passed away in April.

IUCN protected area categories - Video Learning - WizScience.com
"IUCN protected area categories", or "IUCN protected area management categories", are categories used to classify protected areas in a system developed by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature .
The enlisting of such areas is part of a strategy being used toward the conservation of the world's natural environment and biodiversity. The IUCN has developed the protected area management categories system to define, record, and classify the wide variety of specific aims and concerns when categorising protected areas and their objectives.
This categorisation method is recognised on a global scale by national governments and international bodies such as the United Nations and the Convention on Biological Diversity.
A strict nature reserve is an area which is protected from all but light human use in order to preserve the geological and geomorphical features of the region and its biodiversity. These areas are often home to dense native ecosystems that are restricted from all human disturbance outside of scientific study, environmental monitoring and education. Because these areas are so strictly protected, they provide ideal pristine environments by which external human influence can be measured.
In some cases strict nature reserves are of spiritual significance for surrounding communities, and the areas are also protected for this reason. The people engaged in the practice of their faith within the region have the right to continue to do so, providing it aligns with the area's conservation and management objectives.

The IUCN Green List is a new and progressive initiative that encourages and celebrates the success of protected areas, both terrestrial and marine, that reach excellent standards of management. Protected areas that are well-managed fulfill their promise of conserving biodiversity and essential ecosystem services that benefit everyone and sustain life on earth. For protected area managers or agencies, the IUCN Green List will provide direct and indirect benefits from listing including: 1) International recognition for the listed areas and their management authorities for the high quality of manage

IUCN World Parks Congress 2014 - World Leaders' Dialogues - 'Ante Up'
The world’s ecosystems are succumbing to pressure from human activities: 60% of the planet’s ecosystem services have been degraded over the past 50 years. In response, the concept of ‘natural capital’ has emerged to capture the multiple values of biodiversity and ecosystems for people. To safeguard this capital, many studies demonstrate the urgency to advance on sustainable finance mechanisms, yet some object to ‘putting a price’ on nature, arguing ecosystems are not ‘for sale’ like any another commodity. Notwithstanding, protected areas are at the cornerstone of possible new financial mechanisms as their benefits greatly exceed the cost of establishing and effectively managing them. However, the financial value and return on investment that protected areas offer to economic development has yet to be fully understood and integrated into financial planning, as well as business and investment decisions. This World Leaders’ Dialogue is aimed at furthering the search for new forms of sustainable financing for, and from, protected areas, by exploring different mechanisms, such as the payment for ecosystem services schemes, trust funds and green taxes.

IUCN World Parks Congress 2014 - World Leaders' Dialogues - 'The Nature Of Crime'
Increasing consumption is depleting the Earth’s natural resources — the very foundation upon which human society depends — at an alarming rate. The commercial use of wild animals and plants, known as wildlife trade, is at the core of the tensions between biodiversity conservation and human development. According to TRAFFIC, the wildlife trade monitoring network, illegal wildlife trade is estimated at US $10-20 billion annually, and is among the largest sources of illegal trade. This criminal activity is driving the extinction of many species, disrupting critical ecosystem functions, undermining sustainable economic development and threatening communities, livelihoods and human health. In recent years, the drivers of illegal wildlife trade have evolved significantly to include highly organized, transnational criminal networks. This World Leaders’ Dialogue will explore the causes and effects of illegal wildlife trade, and new approaches and investments to combat it. It will explore how the issue extends far beyond wildlife crime to include trade in forest, agricultural and fishing products, fuel and more.

The IUCN Green List and Marine Protected Areas
This webinar originally aired on 14 May 2015.
For protected area managers or agencies, the IUCN Green List will provide direct and indirect benefits from listing including: 1) International recognition for the listed areas and their management authorities for the high quality of management; 2) Political and financial support for areas that achieve listing, or to address issues that will facilitate listing of new areas; 3) Motivation of protected area managers and their agencies to meet and maintain high standards of management; 4) Opportunities for listed areas and their agencies to receive financial and project support; 5) Recognition by the tourism industry and visitors that the area will offer a quality visitor experience; 6) Acknowledgement by communities and stakeholders that the area addresses issues of involvement and benefit sharing; and 7) Further motivation to establish routine methods for measuring management effectiveness. This webinar discussed the origins and implementation of the IUCN Green List including standards that protected areas must meet to be listed and how marine and coastal sites are engaging in the process.
This webinar was presented by James Hardcastle of IUCN and Sue Wells of WCPA-Marine, and it was co-sponsored by the NOAA National MPA Center, the EBM Tools Network, and MPA News.
