Guatemala Travel Video Guide - Guatemala has a rich and distinctive culture from the long mix of elements from Spain and the native Maya people. This diverse history and the natural beauty of the land have created a destination rich in interesting and scenic sites.
Spanning a mountainous slice of Central America immediately south of Mexico, Guatemala is loaded with incredible natural, historical and cultural appeal. As the birthplace and heartland of the ancient Maya, the country is in many ways defined by the legacy of this early civilization. Their rainforest cities were abandoned centuries ago, but Maya people continue to thrive in the Guatemalan highlands, where traditions and religious rituals, mingled with Catholic practices, endure to form the richest and most distinctive indigenous identity in the hemisphere.
Guatemala today is very much a synthesis of Maya and colonial traditions, fused with the omnipresent influences of twenty-first century Latin and North American culture. Baroque churches dating back to the Spanish Conquest coexist with pagan temples that have been sites of worship for millennia. Highland street markets prosper alongside vast glitzy shopping malls, and pre-Columbian festival dances are performed by teenage hip-hop fans.

Day by Day Itinerary
Small Groups: Never more than 10-16 travelers—guaranteed!
Travel to Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Belize to delve into the legacies of the ancient Mayan civilization. More than 3,000 years ago this sophisticated culture emerged from the humid rain forests, flourished for centuries, and then vanished. In that time, the Mayans created a complex writing system, devised a calendar equivalent to our own, introduced the concept of zero in mathematics, predicted lunar and solar eclipses, and built the tallest structures in the western hemisphere—all while Paris was just a sleepy village. Today, their ghostly remnants are scattered across Central America in an ancient, 1,500-mile-long trade ring known as La Ruta Maya. From ruins to rituals to rural villages, we'll trace the footsteps of the enigmatic Mayan culture as only OAT can—in our trademark small groups. Along the way, we'll meet modern-day descendants preserving their Mayan heritage with jade carvings, colorful weavings, and warm hospitality. Join us as we travel back in time to explore the Route of the Maya.

Guatemala Adventure Travel: Everyone who arrives at Guatemala leaves better, more complete. With an adventure that wasn't expected. That is why in Guatemala we would like to show you something more than lakes and volcanoes, more than Mayan cities and more than towns full of color.
Guatemala is still a developing nation, a young democracy with a turbulent and bloody history that's beset by deep-rooted inequalities. And yet, despite alarming levels of poverty and unemployment, most Guatemalans are extraordinarily courteous and helpful to travellers, and only too eager to help you catch the right bus or practise your Spanish.
It's this genuine and profound hospitality combined with the country's outstanding cultural legacy and astonishing natural beauty that makes Guatemala such a compelling place for travellers.

Guatemala City Travel Guide: Guatemala City is located in the department (territorial division) of Guatemala, and it's the capital of the country. All the main highways start at Kilómetro 0, located inside Palacio Nacional de la Cultura (National Palace), in Centro Histórico (Historic Center).
Guatemala City became the capital after Antigua Guatemala had been destroyed by an earthquake in 1773. With a population of around 3 million people, Guatemala City is the largest and most modern city in Guatemala. It can be interesting to visit "Guate," as it is also called by the locals. Guatemala City has attractions and restaurants, often with few tourists. Sunday evenings' gatherings of hundreds of locals at the main plaza is certainly an unforgettable experience.

Santo Tomás de Castilla, also known as Matías de Gálvez is a port city in the Izabal Department, Guatemala.
Seaport
===========
The seaport of the city was built in 1976, after an earthquake had severely damaged the port of Puerto Barrios. Today it is among the busiest in Central America and currently expanding. The port is located next to a free trade zone, the Zona de Libre Industria y Comercio Santo Tomás de Castilla, called Zolic. The port currently employs 2,100 workers. In 2004, 4.56 million tons of trading goods went through the port from 1,372 ships.
Cruise industry
===========
In 2004, a cruise ship terminal was completed and Santo Tomás de Castilla started receiving cruise ships. The cruise ship terminal has been a tremendous boost for the Guatemalan tourism industry. Four cruise ships a month, carrying 1,500 passengers each, make a stop here. Cruise ship passengers visit Guatemala chiefly for its Mayan culture, which sites are located throughout the country. Puerto Barrios Airport is being refurbished in order to handle small planes to transport ship passengers for day trips to Tikal or other places in Guatemala. Nearby attractions include Rio Dulce, Lake Izabal, the towns of Puerto Barrios, Livingston and San Felipe Castle, and the Mayan ruins of Quirigua.

Belgian colony
=============
In the 1840s Santo Tomás was settled by Belgians in a colonial enterprise after the European nation supported Rafael Carrera in his drive for independence of the country. Belgium supported Rafael Carrera as he led Guatemala to independence. The territory was authorized in 1843 "in perpetuity" by the Guatemalan parliament to be administered by the Compagnie belge de colonisation, a private Belgian company under the protection of King Leopold I of Belgium. It replaced the failed British Eastern Coast of Central America Commercial and Agricultural Company. Many of the Belgians who settled there died of yellow fever and malaria, which were endemic to the region. Most were buried in a Belgian cemetery near Matias de Gálvez, which still existed in the 1960s. In 1854 the Belgian company withdrew because of financial losses.

Oh, Tikal. How I loved you and how I hated you. This part of Guatemala was quite the adventure for us. From a failed sunrise tour, to EPIC sunset shots, to a sketchy awful tour guide who tried to screw us, to the heat, the elation, the wonder and awe...it was literally everything wrapped in 14 hours. I was insanely tired but also insanely excited. We got some amazing footage, but it was a huge challenge to get it (carrying all that equipment! AHHH!). All in all, I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat, but I would do things a little differently. I'll lay it all out for you guys so you can learn from my mistakes, and the things we did right! -Nathalie

What we booked:
Tikal sunrise tour AND sunset tour through Posada Del Cerro, who works with San Juan Travel. Beware a tour guide named Ruben! He tried to screw us over. I don't recommend the sunrise tour - see video. The sunset tour is much, much better.

Archaeological Park and Ruins of Quirigua
------------------------------
Inhabited since the 2nd century A.D., Quirigua had become during the reign of Cauac Sky (723–84) the capital of an autonomous and prosperous state. The ruins of Quirigua contain some outstanding 8th-century monuments and an impressive series of carved stelae and sculpted calendars that constitute an essential source for the study of Mayan civilization.
Outstanding Universal Value
Brief Synthesis
The Archaeological Park and Ruins of Quirigua is located in the Department of Izabal in Guatemala. The inscribed property is comprised of 34 hectares of land dedicated exclusively to the conservation of the ancient architecture and the seventeen monuments that were carved between 426 AD and 810 AD and make up this great city.
Quirigua is one of the major testimonies to the Mayan civilization. For reasons which are not clear, it then entered a period of decline. It is known that, at the time of the arrival of the European conquerors, the control of the jade route had been taken over by Nito, a city closer to the Caribbean coast. Although Quirigua has retained ruins and vestiges of dwellings ranging between AD 200 and AD 900, most of the monuments that ensure Quirigua its world-wide reknown date from the 8th century, the period during which the city was entirely remodelled in accordance with its function as royal residence and administrative centre.
At the core of Quiriqua is the Great Plaza, the largest known public space in the entire Maya area. The monumental complexes which are set out around the Great Plaza, the Ceremonial Plaza and the Plaza of the Temple are remarkable for the complexity of their structure - a highly elaborate system of pyramids, terraces, and staircases which results in a complete remodelling of the natural relief and which creates a singular dimension as at Copan.
The artful production of monolithic stone monuments, carved in sandstone without the use of metal tools, is outstanding. The monuments, called stelae, contain hieroglyphic texts describing significant calendar dates, celestial events such as eclipses, passages of Maya mythology and political events, as well as important social and historic events to the development of the city. Not only does this text give a better understanding of the rise and fall of Quirigua, but also describes the span of time between 426 AD to 810 AD making it possible to reconstruct parts of Mayan history. During its brief time of erecting stelae, Quirigua was one of only two cities to regularly erect monuments marking the end of five-year periods.
Criterion (i) : The monuments of the Archaeological Park and Ruins of Quirigua are an outstanding example and the largest corpus of Maya art masterpieces. They are an advanced representation of artistic skill by their sculptors and the meaning and beauty of each piece has survived the passing of this civilization, making them universal masterpieces.
Criterion (ii): The monuments of the Archaeological Park and Ruins of Quirigua were carved during the Classical Period dating from 250 AD to 900 AD. Between the times of 700 AD to 850 AD arose and flourished a style of art known as "The school of Motagua". This style is seen in the monuments of Quirigua and which in turn had a strong influence over the art production in the Maya area of Copán (Honduras) and Belize.
Criterion (iv) : The Archaeological Park and Ruins of Quirigua contain some outstanding 8th-century monuments and an impressive series of carved stelae and sculpted calendars that constitute an essential source for the study of Mayan civilization. The ruins of Quirigua retain an impressive series of stelae and sculpted calendars, partially deciphered, which constitute a remarkable and unique source of the history of the social, political and economic events of the Mayan civilization. The zoomorphic and anthropomorphic sculptures are among the most attractive pre-Columbian works known.
Integrity
All attributes that express the Outstanding Universal Value of the Archaeological Park and Ruins of Quirigua are duly protected within the boundaries of the inscribed property, an area of 34 hectares, allowing for the highest level of conservation. Each of the monuments, true masterpieces of Maya art, is found in situ and in harmony with the surrounding natural and cultural environments.
Protection measures have been taken over the years to prevent damage caused by human development and neglect. However the close proximity to the Motagua River and the geological fault by the same name, make the World Heritage property vulnerable to natural disasters, for which preventive measures have also been taken to have the greatest control over environmental factors.

However the close proximity to the Motagua River and the geological fault by the same name, make the World Heritage property vulnerable to natural disasters, for which preventive measures have also been taken to have the greatest control over environmental factors.

Children of the fourth World - Documentary
60 Minute Documentary - First Aired Nationally on PBS in 1999. Emmy Winner.
In the early 1990's while filming a Presidential Election in Guatelmala City, Film maker John Biffar met an American woman, Kari Engen. She had traveled to Guatemala City several years earlier on a mission to help poor, and hungry children. When she arrived in Guatemala city she learned of the plight of the children, many lost and abandoned. Living on the streets - After all, this was "The Third World." But then she learned of the children living in the dump. An entire subculture of people in a trash pile. This was "The Fourth World." Her life's mission has become helping these children to escape the deadly grasp and cycle of life in the dump. Her program, Mi Refugio is the result. John has documented her struggles, triumphs and tragedies for two decades. This documentary was produced in the late 1990's by Bush Entertainment and Trilogy Media, John's production company. Hosted by and Narrated by Film Actress Ali MacGraw. We are known as Dreamtime Entertainment today. I edited and filmed much of this program and it's a touching and an emotional rollercoaster as it was when I edited way back then on our Media 100 editing system. It still gives me the shivers. I hope you enjoy this program and it inspires you to change the world too. Like Kari is still doing. Go to www.mirefugio.org to help her.
Mi Refugio is a nonprofit corporation with tax exempt status (#52-1610744) in the USA. Contributions should be made out to Mi Refugio and mailed to 4908 Jasmine Drive, Rockville, Maryland 20853. www.mirefugio.org
Dave Says, "This program is not another video about a religious mission to convert people, it's not about a religious anything. It's about one person following her heart. Dedicating her life and all she believes to helping these children, and their families have a better life. For those of us in the US, this documentary gives us evidence that the SMALLEST thing, the most insignificant thing in our lives here in this country could be HUGE for a child living in a Central American dump. But amidst all that dirt and despair, a light can shine through it all...powered by belief that it can be changed. And the most humble person with no means at all, can make that change a reality. According to Kari, that happens when we look into our hearts and ask god. (or whatever deity it is that you believe in, or if you don't believe in any, then ask...just ask and see if you get an answer back)
