Sumatra (Indonesian: Sumatera) is an island in western Indonesia, westernmost of the Sunda Islands. It is the largest island entirely in Indonesia (two larger islands, Borneo and New Guinea, are shared between Indonesia and other countries) and the sixth largest island in the world at 473,481 km2 with a population of 50,365,538. Its biggest city is Medan with a population of 2,109,330.
Sumatra forms an elongated landmass spanned diagonal northwest — southeast axis. The Indian Ocean borders the west, northwest and southwest sides of Sumatra with the island chain of Simeulue, Nias and Mentawai bordering along the southwestern coast. On the northeast side the narrow Strait of Malacca separates the island from Malay Peninsula, an extension of Eurasian continent. On the southeast the narrow Sunda Strait separates Sumatra from Java. The northern tip of Sumatra borders the Andaman islands, while on the lower eastern side are the islands of Bangka and Belitung, Karimata Strait and the Java Sea. The Bukit Barisan mountains, which contain several active volcanoes, forms the backbone of the island, while the northeast sides are outlying lowlands with swamps, mangrove and complex river systems. The equator crosses the island at its center on West Sumatra and Riau provinces. The climate of the island is tropical, hot and humid with lush tropical rain forest originally dominating the landscape.

JAKARTA - PT Perusahaan Perkebunan London Sumatra Tbk (LSIP) predicts their capital expenditure to reach an average of Rp800 billion for planting, maintenance of palm trees and housing construction for their employees.
President Director of PT Perusahaan Perkebunan London Sumatra Indonesia Tbk (LSIP), Benny Tjoeng stated the capital expenditure spent is as much as Rp400 billion in first semester 2015. ”We have been continuing to invest in the non-plant business. For example, housing for employees. Until the end of this year, we have anticipated our yearly capex, to double what was spent in the first semester 2015,” he said in Jakarta.
According to him, capex has been mostly used for planting and maintenance to their palm trees. The factory of Crude Palm Oil (CPO) in South Sumatera is still in progress.
He stated the company will build at least two additional factories in East Kalimantan in the future. “As we are know, Lonsum has planted area in East Kalimantan. So, we will build factories in the near future to anticipate the needs,” he said.

PALEMBANG: Despite making emergency preparations, hospitals in South Sumatra are not seeing a rise in serious respiratory illnesses due to lingering and hazardous haze, according to staff at one of the region's largest facilities on Saturday (Oct 3).
Since the beginning of September, the state-run RSUP Dr Mohammad Hosein Hospital in Palembang has placed a haze contingency team of eight doctors and three nurses on standby 24 hours a day to respond to any escalation in the situation.

Ubicado a 15 minutos aproximadamente de la ciudad de Tuxtepec, Oaxaca se encuentra el río Sumatra, conocido en la región por sus playas que son tan concurridas en temporadas de calor, es la primer parada necesaria para empezar a recorrer los grandes balnearios que se encuentran cerca de la ciudad.
Es necesario que cuando sea visitado lleven consigo provisiones (alimentos y bebidas) ya que no hay ningún negocio cerca del río, tampoco hay casas cerca así que tome sus precauciones para cualquier percance que pudiera suceder.
Recuerden que es importante cuidar la naturaleza así que procuren llevar bolsas para recoger su basura y no olviden llevársela!.

From the infectious trance beat of Sumatra's Folk Dangdut music, featuring Rabab (Violin) or Saluang (Flute), to the highly-refined and glorious Orkes Gambus (Orchestral Arabic music with "Gambus" literally meaning "Oud"), said to have been brought to the island by Islamic settlers from Yemen, the 18 tracks featured here will instantly convince the listener of the expressive beauty and diversity that Sumatra has contributed to the world music theater. Most of the musicians on this release are "Minangkabau" or "Minang" people who are devout followers of Islam as well as the world's largest Matrilineal society (a Minangkabau child is the descendent of his/her mother, not father). These tracks (chosen from stacks of old cassettes) were recorded from the 1960's through the 1980's and are all but dismissed by many Sumatrans who seem to prefer a more contemporary sound. This is an assortment of relics from a forgotten period of transition in Sumatran music when psychedelic organs echoed underneath arabic string sections and rustic violins sawed atop trance beats from poorly-lit night markets. The Minang sound is like no other and it represents a vital link in the somewhat cloudy history of Sumatran music. Keep in mind that this is NOT a document for the mere purpose of preservation, although it may serve as such. This IS among the very best music you've never heard and you need to hear it NOW!

Aber der Einfluss des patriarchalisch geprägten Islams ist deutlich zu spüren.
Friseur- und Kosmetiksalons wie der von Etti hatten lange einen zweifelhaften Ruf und galten als unrein. Gerade ältere Leute weigern sich noch heute, einen Salon zu betreten. Aber Etti ist über 20 Jahre beharrlich ihren Weg gegangen und überzeugt durch ihre Seriosität. Heute hat sie die meisten Kundinnen in ganz Bukittinggi, die sie nach allen Regeln der Kosmetikkunst verwöhnt. Auch bei der Organisation von Hochzeiten verlässt man sich gerne auf Ettis Erfahrung. In wenigen Stunden verwandelt sie mit ihrem Team das Haus der Brauteltern in einen prunkvollen Palast aus Gold, feinen Stoffen und aufwendig verzierten Holzbauten. Ungefähr 3.500 Euro kostet der Rundumservice - ein kleines Vermögen. Früher war die Organisation der Hochzeiten ausschließlich Angelegenheit der Familie. Aber auch in Westsumatra überlässt man heute die umfangreiche Arbeit lieber erfahrenen und routinierten Spezialisten.
