Schopenhauer's most influential work, The World as Will and Representation, claimed that the world is fundamentally what humans recognize in themselves as their will. His analysis of will led him to the conclusion that emotional, physical, and sexual desires can never be fully satisfied. The corollary of this is an ultimately painful human condition. Consequently, he considered that a lifestyle of negating desires, similar to the ascetic teachings of Vedanta, Buddhism and the Church Fathers of early Christianity, was the only way to attain liberation.

Will is a unitary, blind, irrational force underlying all nature and expressing itself throughout it. Since human actions are blindly propelled by this will, not reason, prescriptive ethical rules have little force. We flourish only at each other's expense; evil, pain, and suffering are not aberrations, but express the inner nature of the world. Our will to live is a continuing cycle of want, temporary fulfillment, and more want. New desires replace any satisfied ones, so no lasting happiness is possible. There is no overall end or purpose of life; our will to live is doomed ultimately to fail, and we die.
The Giants of Philosophy is a series of dramatic presentations, in understandable language, of the concerns, questions, interests, and overall world view of history's greatest philosophers. Special emphasis on clear and relevant explanations gives you a new arsenal of insights toward living a better life.

Prof. Richard Bell introduces the life and thought of Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860). The video gives an account of his epistemology – and how he was influenced by Kant – as a basis for his view of the human person: the ‘body’ is an manifestation of ‘the will.’ Richard Bell holds that many of these ideas are of use to theologians in their work.

Arthur Schopenhauer und die Philosophie des Traums
Was unterscheidet Traum und Wirklichkeit?

The Solar Storm: Kyle Hunt speaks with Nicholas Kollerstrom, PhD about his new book Breaking the Spell: The Holocaust: Myth and Reality. The discussion involves: his academic interest in the subject of the Holocaust, how it led to him losing his position at University College London, the most compelling and complete evidence for the event being a hoax, the figures most instrumental in bringing this information to light, where he sees the revisionist movement heading, and what could happen as a mass awakening occurs while new laws against "denial" are put in place.

Sea of Faith
In this rich and strange series philosopher Don Cupitt periphrastically explores how Christian thought nurtured, and responded to an increasingly materialist/realist/rationalist modern world-view. Rev. Prof. Cupitt consideredly meanders through the works and lives of a miscellany of thoughtful coves including Galileo, Pascal, David Strauss, Kierkegaard, Jung, Schopenhaurer, Annie Besant, Vivekananda, Albert Schweitzer, Nietzsche, Wittgenstein and others. This learned, yet accessible, and frankly slightly odd series, is just the sort of thing you don't see on TV anymore.
I believe this series is still available on DVD via the "Sea of Faith Network". http://www.sofn.org.uk/pages/dvd.html

Erstausgabe Berlin, A. W. Hayn 1851
§. 378.

Each generation of therapists can boast of only a few writers like Deborah Luepnitz, whose sympathy and wit shine through a fine, luminous prose. In Schopenhauer's Porcupines she recounts five true stories from her practice, stories of patients who range from the super-rich to the homeless and who grapple with panic attacks, psychosomatic illness, marital despair, and sexual recklessness. Intimate, original, and triumphantly funny, Schopenhauer's Porcupines goes further than any other book in unveiling the secrets of "how talking helps."

The Giants of Philosophy: Arthur Schopenhauer - Audiobook
The Giants of Philosophy: Arthur Schopenhauer - Audiobook
Arthur Schopenhauer was the most articulate and influential pessimist in the history of human thought. He was convinced that the space and time of ordinary life is an illusion, that the world consists of two aspects: representation (visible appearances) and will (hidden reality).

Why Study Arthur Schopenhauer with Richard Bell

Arthur Schopenhauer vs Friedrich Nietzsche: L'esperienza estetica, l'arte e la musica
http://gabrielemartufi.altervista.org
http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Schopenhauer
