COPENHAGEN, DENMARK — Scientists researching for a vaccine against malaria in pregnant women may have accidentally discovered an effective weapon against cancer.
Scientists from the University of Copenhagen (UCPH) and the University of British Columbia (UBC) may have found a breakthrough in fighting cancer, which could result in a medical treatment for those affected with the deadly disease.
Malaria researcher Professor Ali Salanti from UCPH in collaboration with cancer researcher Mads Daugaard from UBC have revealed that the carbohydrate the malaria parasite attaches itself to in the placenta in pregnant women is identical to a carbohydrate present in cancer cells.
Scientists have created the protein that the malaria parasite uses to attach to the placenta in a laboratory and have added a toxin.
The combination of malaria protein and toxin finds cancer cells, is absorbed, then the toxin is released inside, causing the cancer cells to die.
The process has been witnessed in cell cultures and in trials of mice with cancer. The discovery has been detailed in the scientific journal Cancer Cell.
"For decades, scientists have been searching for similarities between the growth of a placenta and a tumor. The placenta is an organ, which within a few months grows from only few cells into an organ weighing approx. two pounds, and it provides the embryo with oxygen and nourishment in a relatively foreign environment. In a manner of speaking, tumors do much the same, they grow aggressively in a relatively foreign environment," says Ali Salanti from the Department of Immunology and Microbiology at the University of Copenhagen.
Research groups from the two universities have tested thousands of samples from brain tumors to leukemias and have found that the malaria protein is able to attack more than 90% of all types of tumors.
The drug was tested on mice implanted with three types of human tumors: non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, prostate cancer and metastatic bone cancer. With the non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, the treated mice tumors were about a quarter of the size of the tumors in the control group. With prostate cancer, the tumors disappeared in two of the six treated mice a month after receiving the first dose. With metastatic bone cancer, five out of six of the mice treated were alive after nearly eight weeks, compared to none of the mice in a control group.
Researchers are now working towards being able to conduct human trials. They say the earliest possible timeframe would be in four years.

“It’s gut-wrenching when children die from malaria, but what keeps us going is that we are making progress against this Voldemort of parasites. It’s an elusive quarry, but have it cornered.” Dr. Terrie Taylor describes her 28+ years of research on cerebral malaria in children in Malawi. A new MRI machine there helped unlock mysteries and now she is working on new medical interventions. It's an important problem, but it's solvable, she says, with continued research and clinical trials.
Dr. Terrie Taylor is a clinician who has been studying the pathogenesis of cerebral malaria in Malawian children since 1986. Together with Professor Malcolm Molyneux, Dr. Taylor established the Blantyre Malaria Project at the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital. Their work has generated many useful insights about pediatric cerebral malaria.
Following Swarthmore College and the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Taylor studied at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and then joined the faculty of the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Michigan State University. Because of the generous and sustained support provided by MSU, Dr. Taylor has been able to spend six months each year in Malawi. While there, she is actively involved in patient care on the Paediatric Research Ward. Each year, she hosts 24 Michigan State medical students on clinical tropical medicine electives in her home, the “MSU House”. She returns to Michigan State for six months of teaching (July – December).

Malaria could hold the key to a cure for cancer, research has revealed.
A team of scientists accidentally stumbled across the breakthrough while looking into ways to fight malaria in pregnant women.
Dutch and Canadian experts claim the carbohydrate that the malaria parasite attaches itself to in the placenta of pregnant women is identical to a carbohydrate found in cancer cells.
Ali Salanti from University of Copenhagen said: ‘For decades, scientists have been searching for similarities between the growth of a placenta and a tumor.
‘The placenta is an organ, which within a few months grows from only few cells into an organ weighing approx. two pounds, and it provides the embryo with oxygen and nourishment in a relatively foreign environment.
‘In a manner of speaking, tumors do much the same, they grow aggressively in a relatively foreign environment.’
The team created a malaria protein mixed with a toxin which targets cancer cells.
The cancer cells adsorb it and the malaria kills the cancer.
It is hoped tests can be carried out on humans in the next four years – and experiments on mice with cancer are already underway.

They say the earliest possible time frame would be in four years.

Scientists say they might have achieved a breakthrough in curing cancer.
Danish researchers accidentally discovered armed malaria proteins can attack cancer and destroy tumors. The method appears to be effective in 90 percent of cancer cases, which could be a giant leap towards curing the fatal disease. Scientists have already tested the process on lab mice with cancer. One of the researchers working on the project said the experiment on mice showed a combination of malaria protein and toxin kills the cancer cells. Scientists are hopeful they can begin testing the finding on humans in the next four years.
