Enescu deliberately called this sonata "in Roumanian character" (dans le caractère populaire roumain), not "in Roumanian style" because to him the two phrases meant entirely different things. To him, "in the style of" meant creating something new in imitation of another thing, whereas "in the character of" meant borrowing the traits of something that already existed. For his Violin Sonata No. 3, Enescu borrowed Gypsy violin techniques to create his themes. He did not want to use existing folk melodies because he felt he could do nothing more than state and re-state them, there was no way for him musically to develop them further as you would normally develop the subject of a sonata-allegro form. He used quarter tones and chromatic modes to break down the tonality of the piece, repeated and superimposed rhythmic and harmonic devices, and detailed throughout the score specific bowing actions and ornaments as were used by Gypsy musicians. Not only does the violinist end up sounding like a true Gypsy violinist, but for much of the sonata the pianist ends up sounding like a cimbalomist, with careful use of the pedal; quick, short, repeated notes; and glissandos to re-create the sound of the hammered instrument.
For all of its improvisational sound, the sonata is actually carefully constructed in three movements.
- The first, Moderato malinconio, is a sonata-allegro based on two contrasting subjects: the first a lament, the second much more animated.
- The opening of the second movement, Andante sostenuto e misterioso, features quietly repeated notes in the piano, on top of which the violin plays a long passage in harmonics. From there it becomes a darkly atmospheric, and at times dramatic, musical painting.
- The final Allegro con brio ma non troppo mosso is a rondo with a march-like subject, which breaks down into something more of a dance or improvisation in its episodes. It ends with a series of stern chords and a final, conclusive fillip from the violin.
The Violin Sonata is dedicated: "à la mémoire de Franz Kneisel".
Enesco is perhaps the most underrated violinist in all of history (probably because he was more famous as a teacher). When my teacher first heard this recording he became obssessed and made every one of his students listen to Enesco 5 times a day. Good advice :)

Sketched between 1925 and 1949, Enescu's Caprice roumain pour violon et orchestre will, ultimately, be left unfinished. Almost half a century later, part of the sketches for the unfinished work were found among the composer's manuscripts at the George Enescu Museum in Bucharest. At the insistance of violinist Sherban Lupu, an enthusiast interpreter of Enescu's music, the composer Cornel Ţăranu took up the challenge to complete and orchestrate the work. After years of piecing together the available material originating from different sources (including the George Enescu Museum, the National Library of Romania and the Library of the Romanian Academy) Cornel Ţăranu was able to complete the work, and the Caprice Roumain was given its premiere as a four-movement extended composition for violin and orchestra in 1997, with Sherban Lupu as soloist.
Similar in manner with Enescu's third violin sonata (dans le caractère populaire roumain), the Caprice Roumain pays homage to the romanian folk fiddler (lăutar), presenting (in the writing for the violin part) all the lăutar's characteristic wealth of tonal effects. The work also evokes, with a certain feeling of nostalgia, the moldavian lands of the composer's childhood, lands which, after his exile following the ascent of the communist party in Romania, he was never to see again.

George Enescu
George Enescu (Romanian pronunciation: [ˈd͡ʒe̯ord͡ʒe eˈnesku]; known in France as Georges Enesco; 19 August 1881 – 4 May 1955) was a Romanian composer, violinist, pianist, conductor, and teacher. He is regarded by many as Romania's most important musician.
Biography
Enescu was born in the village of Liveni (later renamed "George Enescu" in his honor), in Dorohoi County at the time, today Botoşani County. He showed musical talent from early in his childhood. A child prodigy, Enescu began experimenting with composing at an early age. Several, mostly very short pieces survive, all of them for violin and piano. The earliest work of significant length bears the title Pămînt românesc ("Romanian Land"), and is inscribed "opus for piano and violin by George Enescu, Romanian composer, aged five years and a quarter". Shortly thereafter, his father presented him to the professor and composer Eduard Caudella. On 5 October 1888, at the age of seven, he became the youngest student ever admitted to the Vienna Conservatory, where he studied with Joseph Hellmesberger, Jr., Robert Fuchs, and Sigismund Bachrich. He was the second person ever admitted to this university by a dispensation of age (there was a regulation that stipulated that no person younger than 14 years could study at the Vienna Conservatory), after only Fritz Kreisler (in 1882, also at the age of seven), and the first non-Austrian.

Pablo Casals considered Enescu "the greatest musical phenomenon since Mozart".Queen Marie of Romania wrote in her memoirs that "in George Enescu was real gold". Yehudi Menuhin, Enescu's most famous pupil, once said about his teacher: "He will remain for me the absoluteness through which I judge others. Enescu - Caprice Roumain for Violin and Orchestra
Sketched between 1925 and 1949, Enescu's Caprice roumain pour violon et orchestre will, ultimately, be left unfinished. Almost half a century later, part of the sketches for the unfinished work were found among the composer's manuscripts at the George Enescu Museum in Bucharest. At the insistance of violinist Sherban Lupu, an enthusiast interpreter of Enescu's music, the composer Cornel Ţăranu took up the challenge to complete and orchestrate the work. After years of piecing together the available material originating from different sources (including the George Enescu Museum, the National Library of Romania and the Library of the Romanian Academy) Cornel Ţăranu was able to complete the work, and the Caprice Roumain was given its premiere as a four-movement extended composition for violin ...

He used quarter tones and chromatic modes to break down the tonality of the piece, repeated and superimposed rhythmic and harmonic devices, and detailed throughout the score specific bowing actions and ornaments as were used by Gypsy musicians. Not only does the violinist end up sounding like a true Gypsy violinist, but for much of the sonata the pianist ends up sounding like a cimbalomist, with careful use of the pedal; quick, short, repeated notes; and glissandos to re-create the sound of the hammered instrument.
For all of its improvisational sound, the sonata is actually carefully constructed in three movements.
- The first, Moderato malinconio, is a sonata-allegro based on two contrasting subjects: the first a lament, the second much more animated.
- The opening of the second movement, Andante sostenuto e misterioso, features quietly repeated notes in the piano, on top of which the violin plays a long passage in harmonics. From there it becomes a darkly atmospheric, and at times dramatic, musical painting.
- The final Allegro con brio ma non troppo mosso is a rondo with a march-like subject, which breaks down into something more of a dance or improvisation in its episodes. It ends with a series of stern chords and a final, conclusive fillip from the violin.
The Violin Sonata is dedicated: "à la mémoire de Franz Kneisel".

After years of piecing together the available material originating from different sources (including the George Enescu Museum, the National Library of Romania and the Library of the Romanian Academy) Cornel Ţăranu was able to complete the work, and the Caprice Roumain was given its premiere as a four-movement extended composition for violin and orchestra in 1997, with Sherban Lupu as soloist.
Similar in manner with Enescu's third violin sonata (dans le caractère populaire roumain), the Caprice Roumain pays homage to the romanian folk fiddler (lăutar), presenting (in the writing for the violin part) all the lăutar's characteristic wealth of tonal effects. The work also evokes, with a certain feeling of nostalgia, the moldavian lands of the composer's childhood, lands which, after his exile following the ascent of the communist party in Romania, he was never to see again.

Sketched between 1925 and 1949, Enescu's Caprice roumain pour violon et orchestre will, ultimately, be left unfinished. Almost half a century later, part of the sketches for the unfinished work were found among the composer's manuscripts at the George Enescu Museum in Bucharest. The 10th Anniversary Season of the Dilijan Series (http://dilijan.larkmusicalsociety.com) features a remarkable lineup of universally admired artists of international reputation, such as violinists Ani and Ida Kavafian, violists Kim Kashkashian and Paul Coletti, cellists Clive Greensmith and Antonio Lysy, percussionist Kuniko Kato, soprano Tony Arnold, and clarinetist Michele Zukovsky, among others. In celebration of its anniversary, the Dilijan Series have commissioned ten new works, to be premiered throughout the season. Among the commissioned composers are the established Armenian masters, such as Tigran Mansurian, Ashot Zohrabian, Vache Sharafyan, Artur Avanesov, as well as young talented composers Ashot Kartalyan, Daniel Sedgwick, Aram Hovhannisyan, Kristapor Najarian, and Martin Ulikhanyan. At its December concert, the Dilijan Series will present 100 Years by Serj Tankian, the founder and lead singer of the System of a Down rock group. Written jointly with John Psathas, the piece is dedicated to the centennial commemoration of the Armenian Genocide.

Enescu - Caprice Roumain for Violin and Orchestra
Sketched between 1925 and 1949, Enescu's Caprice roumain pour violon et orchestre will, ultimately, be left unfinished. Almost half a century later, part of the sketches for the unfinished work were found among the composer's manuscripts at the George Enescu Museum in Bucharest. At the insistance of violinist Sherban Lupu, an enthusiast interpreter of Enescu's music, the composer Cornel Ţăranu took up the challenge to complete and orchestrate the work. After years of piecing together the available material originating from different sources (including the George Enescu Museum, the National Library of Romania and the Library of the Romanian Academy) Cornel Ţăranu was able to complete the work, and the Caprice Roumain was given its premiere as a four-movement extended composition for violin ...

Almost half a century later, part of the sketches for the unfinished work were found among the composer's manuscripts at the George Enescu Museum in Bucharest. At the insistance of violinist Sherban Lupu, an enthusiast interpreter of Enescu's music, the composer Cornel Ţăranu took up the challenge to complete and orchestrate the work. After years of piecing together the available material originating from different sources (including the George Enescu Museum, the National Library of Romania and the Library of the Romanian Academy) Cornel Ţăranu was able to complete the work, and the Caprice Roumain was given its premiere as a four-movement extended composition for violin and orchestra in 1997, with Sherban Lupu as soloist.
Similar in manner with Enescu's third violin sonata (dans le caractère populaire roumain), the Caprice Roumain pays homage to the romanian folk fiddler (lăutar), presenting (in the writing for the violin part) all the lăutar's characteristic wealth of tonal effects. The work also evokes, with a certain feeling of nostalgia, the moldavian lands of the composer's childhood, lands which, after his exile following the ascent of the communist party in Romania, he was never to see again.

Sketched between 1925 and 1949, Enescu's Caprice roumain pour violon et orchestre will, ultimately, be left unfinished. Almost half a century later, part of the sketches for the unfinished work were found among the composer's manuscripts at the George Enescu Museum in Bucharest. At the insistance of violinist Sherban Lupu, an enthusiast interpreter of Enescu's music, the composer Cornel Ţăranu took up the challenge to complete and orchestrate the work. After years of piecing together the available material originating from different sources (including the George Enescu Museum, the National Library of Romania and the Library of the Romanian Academy) Cornel Ţăranu was able to complete the work, and the Caprice Roumain was given its premiere as a four-movement extended composition for violin and orchestra in 1997, with Sherban Lupu as soloist.
Similar in manner with Enescu's third violin sonata (dans le caractère populaire roumain), the Caprice Roumain pays homage to the romanian folk fiddler (lăutar), presenting (in the writing for the violin part) all the lăutar's characteristic wealth of tonal effects. The work also evokes, with a certain feeling of nostalgia, the moldavian lands of the composer's childhood, lands which, after his exile following the ascent of the communist party in Romania, he was never to see again.

Enescu acknowledged that his String Octet, written when he was only nineteen years old (!), was a transitional work, coming as it did between his highly accomplished juvenilia (he had written four worthy "Study" Symphonies by the age of sixteen) and the first appearance of his mature voice. The experience of his early large-scale scores bears impressive fruit in the Octet, a work of nearly three-quarters of an hour in length, and one which exploits Enescu's mastery of counterpoint to the fullest.
Enescu later noted the difficulty he had in marshalling his musical forces for this work. That's not surprising given the task he set for himself of encompassing within a four-movement structure the elements of a single, sonata-form movement, much in the manner of Schubert's "Wanderer" Fantasy. The opening movement presents no fewer than six themes which will form the basis of the entire work. In addition, there are other features that will recur, including the relentless, pulsing pedal point heard right at the outset, over which the first theme, with its characteristic descending major sixth, is sung unison by massed strings. This rhythmic pulse becomes the engine that drives the contrapuntal web spun by Enescu's eight players, each of which is treated as a full-fledged soloist. The texture is rich, often dense (an episode in 3/4 time in the first movement is accompanied by such an intricate weft of counterpoint that there is the suggestion of delicate tone clusters), and hyper-Romantic in feeling.
Most remakable is how the Octet partakes of some very up-to-the-minute developments in music. Enescu was in Vienna between 1888 and 1893, studying theory under Robert Fuchs, who also taught Mahler, Wolf, Schreker and Zemlinsky, and it's not inconceivable that the younger Enescu was well-attuned to the radical changes in music wrought by his Viennese colleagues.
- Already in the first movement, the six themes are not so much developed (they retain a certain resistant quality throughout the Octet) as they are fragmented and recombined, producing, as it were, a sort of infinitely variable "meta-theme," giving the work thematic unity (and helping the listener keep his bearings in the counterpoint!) while keeping it from straying into monotony. This sophisticated material, with its suggestions both of Roumanian and Gypsy music and of the cosmopolitan boulevards of Europe, represents Enescu's biggest advance to date as a composer.
- The relatively brief scherzo is packed with aggressive unison activity, alternating with heavily chromatic, often dissonant passages.
- Its busy, forward-looking music is succeeded by the serene slow movement, a long, rhapsodic melody accompanied by simple, repeated chords (which are related to the pulsing pedal notes of the first movement). An agitated bridge passage, with fragments of the themes sounding over tremolando strings, leads to...
- the finale, in which the rhythmic impulse that has driven the work now breaks forth as a delirious waltz ("Mouvement de Valse bien rythmée").
