Messenia
Messenia (/məˈsiːniə, -ˈsiːnjə/; Greek: Μεσσηνία Messinia, pronounced [mesiˈnia]) is a regional unit (perifereiaki enotita) in the southwestern part of the Peloponnese, one of 13 regions into which Greece has been divided by the Kallikratis plan, implemented 1 January 2011. Before 2011 Messenia was a nomos (prefecture). The capital and the biggest city of Messenia in either case has been the city of Kalamata.
Geography
Physical
Messenia borders on Elis to the north, Arcadia to the northeast, and Laconia to the southeast. The Ionian Sea lies to the west, and the Gulf of Messenia to the south. The most important mountain ranges are the Taygetus in the east, the Kyparissia mountains in the northwest and the Lykodimo in the southwest. The main rivers are the Neda in the north and the Pamisos in central Messenia.
Off the south coast of the southwesternmost point of Messenia lie the Messenian Oinousses islands. The largest of these are Sapientza, Schiza and Venetiko. The small island Sphacteria closes off the bay of Pylos. All these islands are virtually uninhabited.

Ancient Messene was the ancient capital of Messenia. The city was founded by the Theban general Epameinondas in 369 B.C.who also liberated Messenians from Spartan rule. The archaeological site also comprises of the mountain fortification of Ithome with the long fortification line with towers which exist still today. In here, one can see the Arcadian Gate complex, a magnificent tower structure that connected the ancient Messene with the city of Megalopolis. It is widely accepted that inside the gate there were statues of Hermes.

Polylimnio Waterfalls, Kazarma Messenia Greece
Polylimnio Waterfalls are located near the village of Kazarma and are easily approachable. Although the waterfalls are on upper side of the small path, it is worth on following the path down the river to see the landscape as the river floes downstream. The place is a small paradise when one considers the location where the waterfalls are. It is by no means a place to visit if traveling on this area.

Methoni Castle, Messenia Greece
Methoni Castle is one of the most well preserved medieval castles in the Mediterranean Coast. It's position was a strategic one as it controlled all trade routes coming from the Adriatic Sea. The Castle is divided in two parts, the south part where housing and other buildings exist with a simple fortification and with towers in close spaces. The northen part which is more fortified is the main complex of the Castle and here was also the seat of the Castle's commander. The two parts are divided by a small fortified wall with five towers. Inside the Castle, there are some buildings that remain still intact among them the church of 'Metamorfosis tou Sotiros', a pyramid-like structure which was used as gunpowder storage and two Ottoman hamams. Methoni Castle is one of the most well preserved medieval castles in the Mediterranean Coast. It's position was a strategic one as it controlled all trade routes coming from the Adriatic Sea.
The Castle is divided in two parts, the south part where housing and other buildings exist with a simple fortification and with towers in close spaces. The northen part which is more fortified is the main complex of the Castle and here was also the seat of the Castle's commander. The two parts are divided by a small fortified wall with five towers.
Inside the Castle, there are some buildings that remain still intact among them the church of 'Metamorfosis tou Sotiros', a pyramid-like structure which was used as gunpowder storage and two Ottoman hamams. Also, close to the Ottoman hamams an old minaret exists but is in ruins.
One of the most exciting places of the Castle is the 'Μπουρτζι' (Bourtzi), a small fortified castle built in a small islet near the main castle's entrance in the sea. It's an octagonal tower with a small octagonal fortification and it is consisted of two levels. Inside the tower, there were four levels separated by wood floors. However, none exist today. 'Μπούρτζι' (Bourtzi) was firstly built by the Venetians around 1500 A.D. and the structure was completed by the Ottoman Turks in the 16th century.
