They tested this empirically and presented extensive quantified evidence supporting the model. Communication scholar Robert W. McChesney, inspired in part by the work of Chomsky and Herman, has linked the failures of the

3:09 During the first few years that Murdoch's ownership of Fox's DC affiliate, he had a hands-off approach to new content; partially due to their success. One day orders came from Murdoch's offices that the network should cut away from their regularly scheduled program and broadcast the RNC's fawning tribute to Reagan: "we were ordered, from the top, to carry propaganda; Republican, right-wing propaganda". It foreshadowed what Fox News would later become.
6:30 Former Fox News reporters and bookers say that they are afraid to be seen "talking to the wrong people". Working for Fox meant you were constantly being monitored. It created a culture of fear. If you challenged the heads of the network On ideological matters, you were history.
10:45 “Some People Say” – FOX uses the phrase "some people say" to mask opinion as news.
19:04 Fox News contributors are under paid contract for their appearance; if they deviate from the party lines, they might not get asked back onto shows.
21:22 Fox News went after Richard Clarke as soon as it was apparent that he was going to paint the Bush administration in a bad light. For Fox News, "mudding" arguments is almost as good as winning them. So, they didn't need to definitely prove that Clarke, a former member of the Bush Administration, was angling for a position in a Kerry Whitehouse, they just had to make it look like a possibility.
22:28 They put weak-looking , lesser known liberals up against photogenic, self-assured conservatives.
26:29 Republicans accounted for 83% of the guests while Democrats accounted for 17% of guest on the network's most prestigious show. Of those democrats, most were either centrist or conservative.
27:50 Stories they Cover...Stories they Ignore - Management set the tone for stories: Jesse Jackson was always to be painted in a negative light, as were immigrants. Culture war issues - abortion, affirmative action, gay marriage - were often covered while ignoring issues regarding the economy, health care, and the environment.
34:38 O'Reilly's show is a good example of everything that is wrong with Fox News --
Stories are selected to prop-up the Republican party and their point of view; O'Reilly is very hostile to guest who disagrees with him; and he distorts and misrepresent things.
42:00 Many Fox News stories are meant to generate fear; for example, stories about what to do if there's a "dirty bomb" attack. Fear is a great motivator and organizer; even when there is no real evidence for it. Terrorism is the ultimate fear-baiting; and when people are fearful, they are more likely to support military interventions. Talking about terrorism also means that you can avoid talking about other issues, like the economy.
46:29 Fox made the decision to present the Iraq war as a success. "The senior producer told the two or three writers for her news hour...'now, just keep in mind that it's all good. This is such a fair and balance issue. Keep it positive. We got to emphasize all the good we are doing".
48:43 Knowledge Networks Poll - It's a simple survey about fact regarding current events. The more likely people were to watch Fox News, the more misinformed they were and the more likely they were to back the Bush Administration.
50:49 Fox News repeats and propagates the Republican Party platform. It was widely known that the Fox reporter covering the 2000 Bush campaign was married to a Bush campaigner. This wouldn't have been allowed at CNN.
52:47 Election Night 2000 - The first guy to call the election for Bush was the head of Fox's New's election analyze division; Bush's first cousin. He called it a clear win, when in fact it was too close too call.
59:16 The Republican send out "the message of the day" so that conservative talk radio, Fox News, and Republican elected officials will all be talking about the same issues, in the same way.
58:41 2004 Election; coverage of Bush was always glowing, while Kerry was shown in a negative light.
1:02:51 During the 2004 election, Fox News painted a very rosy picture of the American economy and by selecting statistics which showed just that. Of course, they credited Bush for the "good" economy. When the stock market had a bad day, they claimed it was because of fear over the prospect of a Kerry presidency.
1:05:28 Murdoch is foremost a politician and this is what makes him dangerous.
1:06:57 The Fox Effect - It made other news organization more conservative because they saw how well Fox did.
1:09:13 A Call to Action - Media control is a political issue. People need to demand accuracy.

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. News journalism has changed fundamentally in the last 20 years. Editor Rob Orchard of Delayed Gratification magazine uses seven headlines to trace the corrosive effect of disinvestment and hyper-speedy digital news dissemination and to call for a Slow Journalism revolution.
Rob Orchard is the co-founder and editorial director of the Slow Journalism Company, the publisher of Delayed Gratification magazine, which revisits the events of the preceding quarter and makes a virtue of being "Last to Breaking News". He spends his days writing and editing long form features for the publication, which he describes as offering an "antidote to PR-driven stories, knee-jerk reactions and churnalism". Prior to starting the Slow Journalism Company, Rob launched and ran magazines for Virgin Atlantic, created the Middle East's biggest travel magazine and worked as the editor of Time Out Dubai, Time Out Croatia and Time Out Paris.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Why Journalism Is Important: Christopher Hitchens on Media (1998)

Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky proposed a concrete model for the filtering processes (biases) of mainstream media, especially in the United States, called the propaganda model. They tested this empirically and presented extensive quantified evidence supporting the model. Communication scholar Robert W. McChesney, inspired in part by the work of Chomsky and Herman, has linked the failures of the mainstream press primarily to corporate ownership, pro-corporate public policy, and the myth of "professional journalism." He has published extensively on the failures of the mainstream press, and advocates scholarship in the study of the political economy of the media, the growth of alternative media, and comprehensive media policy reforms. Ben Bagdikian has also written about the takeover of biased media, with particular attention to the giant conglomerates that own them. He argues that because five large conglomerates own the majority of American media, politics and general media influence in America are in jeopardy.
Whereas some alternative media theorists (e.g., Chris Atton) propose broad definitions of media alterity, parecon theorist and Z Magazine cofounder Michael Albert incorporates the politico-economic critique of mainstream media into his definition of alternative media. In answering the question "What makes alternative media alternative?" he suggests that alternative media institutions should feature an anti-corporate structure, not just alternative media content. Along these lines, Albert has criticized publications such as The Nation and the Village Voice for replicating corporate hierarchies and divisions of labor.[12]
While the Propaganda Model resonates in productive ways with the way in which media systems have developed in the United States context, this theory might fall short in describing the situation in nations outside of the American context. The Propaganda Model would have a hard time explaining nations with a weak communications infrastructure (somewhere like Zimbabwe), heavily funded and state sponsored public broadcasting television stations (such as Australia), or with a strong tradition of partisan print and televised journalism.
The alternative press consists of printed publications that provide a different or dissident viewpoint than that provided by major mainstream and corporate newspapers, magazines, and other print media.
Factsheet Five publisher Mike Gunderloy described the alternative press as "sort of the 'grown-up' underground press. Whole Earth, the Boston Phoenix, and Mother Jones are the sorts of things that fall in this classification."[13] In contrast, Gunderloy described the underground press as "the real thing, before it gets slick, co-opted, and profitable. The underground press comes out in small quantities, is often illegible, treads on the thin ice of unmentionable subjects, and never carries ads for designer jeans."[13]
An example of alternative media is tactical media, which uses 'hit-and-run' tactics to bring attention to an emerging problem. Often tactical media attempts to expose large corporations that control sources of mainstream media.
One prominent NGO dedicated to tactical media practices and info-activism is the Tactical Technology Collective which assists human rights advocates in using technology. They have released several toolkits freely to the global community, including NGO In A Box South Asia, which assists in the setting up the framework of a self-sustaining NGO, Security-In-A-Box, a collection of software to keep data secure and safe for NGOs operating in potentially hostile political climates, and their new short form toolkit 10 Tactics, which "... provides original and artful ways for rights advocates to capture attention and communicate a cause".
In many countries around the world, specific categories of radio stations are licensed to provided targeted broadcasts to specific communities, including community radio and low-power FM (LPFM). Such stations typically broadcast with less wattage than commercial or public/state-run broadcasters, and are often non-commercial and non-profit in nature. In the United States, a special class of stations known as low-power FM (LPFM) stations were first authorized by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in January 2000. These stations are authorized to provide non-commercial, educational broadcasting and cannot operate with an effective radiated power of more than 100 watts. LPFM services were authorized to meet the increasing demand which existed in the United States for the creation of new, hyper-local radio outlets that would be grounded in their respective communities. The Prometheus Radio Project is a grassroots organization in the United States which advocates the establishment of LPFM stations and provides assistance to start-up LPFM stations.

The New Ethics of Journalism: A Guide for the 21st Century by Kelly McBride and Tom Rosenstiel provides an authoritative and practical book on Poynter's "green light" process in ethical decision making for journalists and journalism students. The work will include chapters on the roles and responsibilities of journalists (e.g., values, newsroom culture, decision making models), the landscape (e.g., owners, audiences, economics, citizens), and pressure points (e.g., accuracy, conflicts of interest, bias, and coverage of vulnerable people). In addition, the work will include a variety of case studies: "raw," workshop style, deconstructed, and in dialogue.

Responding to the newly-emerging trend of organisations hiring journalists to create content on their behalf, Brand Journalism is the first comprehensive, practical guide to this hybrid form of traditional journalism, marketing and public relations. This textbook takes a direct and practical approach to the subject, showing journalists and journalism students how they can apply their skills to working for a brand, and showing those who work for non-media organisations how their organisation can acquire the skills necessary to become a multimedia publisher. Areas covered include: • Establishing the audience your brand wants to engage with • Identifying your organisation’s business goals • Developing a brand journalism strategy to help deliver those business goals • Measuring the results of your brand journalism strategy The book also features a wealth of case studies on the subject and offers an invaluable companion website - www.brand-journalism.co.uk.

4 A.M. on a Friday, wanna play something new
I see a brand new vidya with first person view
Kind of wanna play it, but before I give in
I don't wanna pay for a shit game
So I checked IGN
I went on to their website, and what do ya know
The entire page was covered with ads from Mountain Dew and Doritos
Tried to find the reviewers, but they were all college-aged
I guess reviewing games is hard when the publishers pay your wage
"Welcome to Gaming Journalism
Ten out of ten
(Ten out of ten)
Would shill again
Bias is high here in Gaming Journalism
Game of the year
(Game of the year)
Advertise it here"
Found the review of the vidya, but the game looked shit
It had a lot of pretty, pretty scenes but that was about it
Then I look at the number, ten out of ten
They say the game was progressive, for having a lesbian
And it's better on the Xbox, it's the One true way
Well they can have their controllers, if 30 frames is what they like to play
When PlayStation brings money they support Sony too
and they'll leave out the best games because they're on Wii U
"Welcome to Gaming Journalism
Ten out of ten
(Ten out of ten)
Would shill again
We're laughing it up at Gaming Journalism
Game of the year
(Game of the year)
When the cheque will clear"
New release from EA, and the scores looked low
the reviewers never got paid, so the sales were slow
then they bought up some marketers, and Game Informer's front page
oh I dream of the one day when all the shill threads get saged
Last thing I remember, I was exiting the site
I read enough bullshit to piss me off for the night
"GOTY" said GameSpot "The cinematics were alright"
God Hand get a 3, Party Babyz gets a 7.5

A theoretical seminar and a practical workshop for journalists about situation awareness and digital self-defense.
Modern information and communication technology has penetrated our lives today. Smartphones, tablets, computers and the Internet have become so self-evident that we rarely think about how these technologies of global networking have changed the way we work and communicate - or the risks that come with it.
The rapid global access to data and information that simplifies and enriches our work and our lives, is also our greatest vulnerability: it is now quite possible to intercept our communications on the network, to identify our user profiles, to access our computers and to tap off our data - all without us noticing.
In addition to doctors and lawyers, journalists are encouraged to assume a special duty of care for their information and data regarding sources and clients. With the use of computers and the Internet, this duty of care can not be passively exercised; the legally guaranteed protection of sources and clients no longer suffice. Journalists must actively seek protection of their communication and their data - and this usually requires external know-how to assess a situation-specific hazard correctly and to find the appropriate measures to avoid damage.
To facilitate this task, this seminar is especially for the journalistic environment. It teaches the handling of the available technical protection measures in addition to the necessary understanding of the dangers in the use of computers and the Internet. This includes the basic knowledge to develop a new situation awareness for dealing with computers and communications technology in journalism:
* How are confidentiality, integrity and anonymity (from sources) threatened by the use of computer and communication technology?
* What are the basic safeguards for the use of computers in the journalistic environment?
* What should I know about passwords and their use?
* How do I secure my communications on the Internet (Web Browser, Email, IM) and on the phone?
* What is encryption and how do I use it?
* How do I save information safe from unauthorized access?
* How I recognize and avoid metadata in documents and images?
* What should I specifically note in foreign missions?
* How do I deal with printed information correctly?
* What should I know about Social Networks?

In Kafka's novel, the story begins: "Someone must have been telling lies about Josef K., because he had done nothing wrong, but one day he was arrested."
This week, a trial took place that had something of the Kafka-esque.
In a 20-month-long ordeal, and after months of extended pre-trial imprisonment, repeated postponements, charges that lack convincing evidence and hearings fraught with complexity - three Al Jazeera journalists were sentenced to three years in prison by a Cairo court.
Evidence including footage of a trotting horse from Sky News Arabia; holiday snaps; a pop music video, and like the fictive account of Josef K - a bank employee, who is unexpectedly arrested one morning for an unspecified crime, the story of the 'Al Jazeera 3' makes for uncomfortable reading.
One journalist, Peter Greste, remains out of jail after being deported back to Australia in February. But Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed have been sent back to the notorious Tora Prison, where they already spent more than 400 days. Baher Mohamed has been given six months extra for being found in possession of a spent bullet case picked up at a protest. Six other Al Jazeera journalists have been convicted in absentia. At least 18 other journalists are in jail in Egypt.
This trial is about much more than Al Jazeera. This week, we have broken format and bring you a special edition on what many consider a politicised attack on press freedom, and part of a comprehensive crackdown on all forms of Egyptian opposition.
We talk to Peter Greste from Sydney; former Al Jazeera English correspondent Sherine Tadros, and journalist Hugh Miles, both in Cairo; and Geoffrey Robertson QC, who is part of the legal team; and political scientists who have been following the story, H.A Hellyer and Mark Levine.
Journalism on Egypt and from Egypt may be in short supply - but there are some outlets that you can turn to for original reporting that pushes the limits. We give you a map of some of those outlets - as well as both government and Muslim Brotherhood outlets giving their version of events.

Hersh was born in Chicago to Yiddish-speaking Lithuanian Jewish parents who emigrated to the US from Lithuania and Poland and ran a dry-cleaning shop in the far west side neighborhood of Chicago, called Austin. After graduating from the University of Chicago with a history degree, Hersh found himself struggling to find a job. He began working at Walgreens before being accepted into University of Chicago Law School but was soon expelled for poor grades.[10] After returning for a short time to Walgreens, Hersh began his career in journalism as a police reporter for the City News Bureau in 1959. He later became a correspondent for United Press International in South Dakota. In 1963, he went on to become a Chicago and Washington correspondent for the Associated Press. While working in Washington Hersh first met and befriended I. F. Stone, whose I. F. Stone's Weekly would serve as an initial inspiration for Hersh's later work. It was during this time that Hersh began to form his investigative style, often walking out of regimented press briefings at the Pentagon and seeking out one-on-one interviews with high-ranking officers. After a falling out with the editors at the AP when they insisted on watering down a story about the US government's work on biological and chemical weapons, Hersh left the AP and sold his story to The New Republic. During the 1968 presidential election, he served as press secretary for the campaign of Senator Eugene McCarthy After leaving the McCarthy campaign, Hersh returned to journalism as a freelancer covering the Vietnam War. In 1969, Hersh received a tip from Geoffrey Cowan of The Village Voice regarding an Army lieutenant being court-martialled for killing civilians in Vietnam. His subsequent investigation, sold to the Dispatch News Service, was run in thirty-three newspapers and exposed the My Lai massacre, winning him the Pulitzer Prize in 1970.[10][11]
In 1972, Hersh was hired as a reporter for the Washington bureau of The New York Times, where he served from 1972 to 1975 and again in 1979. In 1975, Hersh was active in the investigation and reporting of Project Azorian (which he called Project Jennifer), the Central Intelligence Agency's clandestine effort to raise a Soviet submarine using the Howard Hughes' Glomar Explorer.
In January 2005, Hersh alleged that the US was conducting covert operations in Iran to identify targets for possible strikes. Hersh also claimed that Pakistan and the United States have struck a "Khan–for–Iran" deal in which Washington will look the other way at Pakistan's nuclear transgressions and not demand handing over of its infamous nuclear scientist A. Q. Khan, in return for Islamabad's cooperation in neutralizing Iran's nuclear plans. This was also denied by officials of the governments of the US and Pakistan.
In the April 17, 2006 issue of The New Yorker,[28] Hersh reported on the Bush administration's purported plans for an air strike on Iran. Of particular note in his article is that a US nuclear first strike (possibly using the B61-11 bunker-buster nuclear weapon) is under consideration to eliminate underground Iranian uranium enrichment facilities. In response, President Bush cited Hersh's reportage as "wild speculation." [29]
When, in October 2007, asked on presidential candidate Hillary Clinton's hawkish views on Iran, Hersh claimed that Jewish donations were the main reason for these:
“ Money. A lot of the Jewish money from New York. Come on, let’s not kid about it. A significant percentage of Jewish money, and many leading American Jews support the Israeli position that Iran is an existential threat. And I think it’s as simple as that. When you’re from New York and from New York City, you take the view of – right now, when you’re running a campaign, you follow that line. And there’s no other explanation for it, because she’s smart enough to know the downside.[30] ”
During one journalism conference, Hersh claimed that after the Strait of Hormuz incident, members of the Bush administration met in vice president Dick Cheney's office to consider methods of initiating a war with Iran. One idea considered was staging a false flag operation involving the use of Navy SEALs dressed as Iranian PT boaters who would engage in a firefight with US ships. This idea was shot down. This claim has not been verified.

In an uncensored discussion on the pitfalls of the tabloid game, we debate Harvey Levin and TMZ, the Kardashians, Dr. Drew, and more with attention to the spinning moral compass at work behind the rabid motivations of celebrity journalism in this episode of Media Mayhem.
GUEST BIO:
Jim Moret is Chief Correspondent for INSIDE EDITION, based in the Los Angeles bureau.
An attorney, Moret reported extensively on the Scott Peterson double murder trial and filed daily reports on the Michael Jackson child molestation trial, for which he also served as a legal analyst for many broadcast and cable networks. In addition to his work for the newsmagazine, Moret has appeared as a guest on more than 250 cable news programs, offering his expertise on newsworthy issues.
Moret has covered several high-profile trials, including the Anna Nicole Smith paternity hearing as well as the Paris Hilton DUI trial. In addition, Moret has conducted jailhouse interviews with convicted murderer Susan Polk and continues to follow the Phil Spector trial, obtaining exclusive footage and interviews of Spector and his assistant.

When Turks go to the polls on June 7, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan hopes his Justice and Development Party - the AKP - will secure enough seats in parliament to change Turkey's constitution.
During the campaign, Erdogan and his Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu have been fixated on the media - accusations, arrests, reporting bans and court convictions against journalists.
Last week, Erdogan publicly accused the editor of the Cumhuriyet newspaper of espionage and slammed the New York Times for holding a grudge against him and Turkey itself.
The election will have great influence on the future of Turkish journalism, at least in the short term.
Talking us through the story are: Bulent Kenes, the editor-in-chief of Today's Zaman; Can Dundar, the editor-in-chief of Cumhuriyet; Mehmet Karaca, the Ankara editor-in-chief of ATV; and Besir Atalay, the deputy chair and spokesman for the AKP.
In the second half of the show, Richard Gizbert sits down with Daniel Ellsberg, the first whistleblower prosecuted in US history.
In 1971, Ellsberg gave the so-called Pentagon Papers to the New York Times, the Washington Post and 17 other newspapers. He has re-emerged as an advocate for those who want the truth to get out like Edward Snowden and Chelsea Manning.
