Syrian President Bashar al-Assad lashed out at the Israeli prime minister, Ariel Sharon's supporters on Tuesday saying they were "more racist than the Nazi's".
Assad's made the remarks during the first day of a two day summit for Arab leaders aimed at supporting Palestinians in their six-month-old uprising against Israeli occupation and forging a common policy on Iraq's dispute with Kuwait.
The gathering, held in Amman, is the first ordinary Arab summit since the 1990-1991 Gulf crisis, and attracted 14 heads of state, as well as the Palestinian President Yasser Arafat.
Delegates had the thorny task of trying to forge a unified stance on Iraq's international isolation and reach agreement on how to deal with the Israel-Palestinian conflict.
Jordan's King Abdullah II, who takes over the one-year rotating presidency of the Arab summit with this meeting, focused on the unity theme in his opening remarks as did the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.
Arafat said the Palestinian issue could only be solved by Aran nations, working together.
Assad also said that Sharon is a man who hates Arabs and Muslims and it was impossible for Arabs to think that a country who voted Sharon into power wants peace.
He dismissed the idea that Sharon - who was elected Prime Minister is February - should be given time to show his peaceful intentions.
Sharon is widely hated in the Arab world for his role as architect of Israel's 1982 invasion of Lebanon.
An Israeli inquiry found him indirectly to blame for the slaughter by Israeli-backed Lebanese militiamen of hundreds of unarmed Palestinian refugees in two Beirut camps.
Even Kuwait and Iraq, subjects of the most contentious debate at the summit, used their opening speeches to express their Palestinian support instead of furthering their own issues.

The National Council on US-Arab Relations is dedicated to form an overarching bridge of political, cultural, economic, social, and information cooperation between the American citizens and their Arab counterparts. In thriving towards its goal, the Council has been engaging in various educational and leadership exchanges among students. As part of its initiatives, NCUSAR held the first ever Model Arab League Conference at Georgetown University, Washington DC in 1983.
Within the same framework, the Lebanese American University, through the Outreach and Civic Engagement unit, has actively committed itself in educating the whole person and preparing world class citizens and global leaders by engaging in several leadership and simulation programs and initiatives. Because of its long history of civic engagement and success stories in the promotion and cultivation of leadership, LAU got accredited from the NCUSAR to establish a Model Arab League conference within its premises. This gave LAU exclusivity and made it the pioneer in bringing MAL to Lebanon and the Middle East.
Soon enough, the Lebanese American University partnered up with the Hariri Foundation for Sustainable Human Development, and expanded its scope of participation to include high school students of different religions, backgrounds, identities and affiliations from all over Lebanon.

As of 2013, its population is estimated at just under 10.8 million. Its name is derived from its capital city, Tunis, located on the country's northeast coast.
Geographically, Tunisia contains the eastern end of the Atlas Mountains and the northern reaches of the Sahara desert. Much of the rest of the country's land is fertile soil. Its 1,300 kilometres (810 mi) of coastline includes the African conjunction of the western and eastern parts of the Mediterranean Basin and, by means of the Sicilian Strait and Sardinian Channel, features the African mainland's second and third nearest points to Europe after Gibraltar.
Tunisia has a high human development index. It has an association agreement with the European Union and is a member of La Francophonie, the Arab Maghreb Union, the Arab League, and the African Union. Close relations with Europe – in particular with France and with Italy – have been forged through economic cooperation, privatisation and industrial modernization.
In 2011, a revolution resulted in the overthrow of the autocratic President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali followed by the country's first free elections. Since then, Tunisia has been consolidating democracy. The country held its first Parliamentary elections since the 2011 Arab Spring on October 26, 2014, and its Presidentials on November 23, 2014.

The Western Sahara is a disputed territory in the Maghreb region of North Africa, bordered by Morocco to the north, Algeria to the extreme northeast, Mauritania to the east and south, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. Its surface area amounts to 266,000 square kilometres (103,000 sq mi). It is one of the most sparsely populated territories in the world, mainly consisting of desert flatlands. The population is estimated at just over 500,000, of whom nearly 40% live in El Aaiún (also spelled Laâyoune), the largest city in Western Sahara.
Occupied by Spain since the late 19th century, the Western Sahara has been on the United Nations list of non-self-governing territories since 1963 after a Moroccan demand.[4] It is the most populous territory on that list, and by far the largest in area. In 1965, the UN General Assembly adopted its first resolution on Western Sahara, asking Spain to decolonise the territory. One year later, a new resolution was passed by the General Assembly requesting that a referendum be held by Spain on self-determination.
In 1975, Spain relinquished the administrative control of the territory to a joint administration by Morocco (which had formally claimed the territory since 1957) and Mauritania.[6] A war erupted between those countries and the Sahrawi national liberation movement, the Polisario Front, which proclaimed the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) with a government-in-exile in Tindouf, Algeria. Mauritania withdrew in 1979, and Morocco eventually secured effective control of most of the territory, including all the major cities and natural resources.
Since a United Nations-sponsored ceasefire agreement in 1991, two thirds of the territory (including most of the Atlantic coast line)[8] has been controlled by Morocco and the remainder by the SADR, strongly backed by Algeria.[9] Internationally, countries such as the United States and Russia have taken a generally ambiguous and neutral position on each side's claims, and have pressed both parties to agree on a peaceful resolution. Both Morocco and Polisario have sought to boost their claims by accumulating formal recognition, essentially from African, Asian, and Latin American states in the developing world. The Polisario Front has won formal recognition for SADR from 53 states, and was extended membership in the African Union. Morocco has won recognition or support for its position from several African governments and from most of the Arab League. In both instances, recognitions have, over the past two decades, been extended and withdrawn according to changing international trends.[citation needed] As of 2006, no other member state of the United Nations has recognized Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara.

Arab leaders said on Wednesday that Palestinian divisions allowed Israel to carry out its devastating strikes on the Gaza Strip and were hindering any effective Arab response.
Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal said that the offensive, which he called a terrible massacre, wouldn't have happened if the Palestinians were not divided between rival Hamas and Palestinian Authority leaders.
Israel on Saturday began hitting Hamas targets across the Gaza Strip in response to repeated rocket attacks against the south of the country.
Five days into the attack some 390 Palestinians have died, according to Gaza officials.
The Arab League met to present a united Arab response in the face of widespread outrage across the region.
Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa also urged the Palestinians to reconcile their long schism and called on the Arab nations to present a united stance.
At the top the meeting's agenda is an Egyptian proposal for a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas.

STORYLINE:
Arab League chief Nabil Elaraby said on Tuesday that the massacres taking place in Syria "amount to war crimes under international law".
Elaraby made the comments during a meeting with the Bulgarian Foreign Minister, Nickolai Mladenov, at the League's headquarters in the Egyptian capital, Cairo.
Elaraby spoke particularly of Aleppo, from where 200-thousand Syrians have fled over the past 10 days as the government trains its mortars, tank and helicopter gunships on neighbourhoods seized by the rebels.
The battle for Aleppo, Syria's commercial hub with around 3 million inhabitants, has now lasted longer than the rebel assault on the capital Damascus that regime troops crushed earlier in July.
Once a bastion of support for Assad, Aleppo is critical for both the regime and the opposition. Its fall would give the opposition a major strategic victory with a stronghold in the north. A rebel defeat, at the very least, would buy Assad more time.
Despite pledges by the government and opposition to implement the six-point peace plan for Syria brokered by Kofi Annan, a cease-fire never happened, and fighting has continued to escalate to a point where the conflict was recently declared a civil war.
For many diplomats and military experts, Annan's plan is all but dead.
Bulgarian Foreign Minister, Nickolai Mladenov, on Tuesday called on Syrian opposition groups to unify and agree on a leadership in preparation for a post-Assad Syria.
"I hope that we can see our friends in the Syria opposition organise more quickly to implement what under the auspices of the Arab league that they have achieved," Mladenov said. "This is the National Compact and the transition plan, because this will send a strong message to the people in Syria about the future of their country after the end of the Assad regime," he added.
Participants at a meeting of opposition groups in Cairo earlier this month (July) did agree on fundamental principles for a post-Assad Syria and a general outline to guide the opposition through a transitional period - but scuffles and fistfights during the session and a walkout by a Syrian Kurdish group visibly demonstrated the opposition's disarray.
The fighting in Aleppo stretched into its 11th day on Tuesday.
Despite regime claims of success and repeated forays by tanks and ground forces into rebel-controlled areas in the northeast and southwest of the city, the rebels appear to have held their ground,
prompting government forces to resort to more shelling by artillery and mortars. Rebel positions are also being attacked with helicopter gunships.
The Syrian government has defended its assault on Aleppo to the U.N., describing a city in the grip of "terrorist mercenaries" funded by Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey, that are holding people hostage as human shields and committing "horrifying crimes."

STORYLINE:
Arab foreign ministers on Sunday rejected Syria's demand that Hezbollah and its allies have greater representation in Lebanon's Cabinet, according to delegates at an emergency meeting in Cairo.
Participants at the Arab League meeting late on Sunday said the majority of ministers rejected Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem's request for a new formula for Lebanese politics.
Moallem had pushed for Hezbollah to have ten ministers in the next Cabinet - or one-third of the seats - which would effectively give the Hezbollah-led opposition veto power.
Two delegates at the meeting confirmed the information, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.
They spoke to The Associated Press by telephone, while the meeting was still under way.
Only Libyan Foreign Minister Abdel Rahman Shalgam backed the Syrian proposal, the officials said.
Lebanon is embroiled in its worst political crisis since the end of its 1975-90 civil war.
Former President Emile Lahoud left office on November 23 without a successor, and parliament has so far failed to elect the army chief to replace him amid bickering between the parliament majority and the opposition.
At a news conference after Sunday's meeting, Arab League Chief Amr Moussa predicted further violence if Lebanon did not elect a new president by February 11 - a date set by the parliament speaker last week.
Earlier in the day, seven people were killed in Beirut during riots by opposition supporters protesting the government's rationing of electricity.
The Arab League chief put particular blame for the crisis on pro-Syrian groups in Lebanon, saying they intentionally held up the elections with new demands.
"The secretary general of the Arab league will try sorting out participant's percentage in the government with both parliament majority and the opposition in order to reach a unified solution and this is very important. We need a unified stand not for the majority and not (in favour) of the opposition," Amr Moussa said.
Moussa also warned that an Arab leadership summit scheduled for March 28 in Damascus might be put off if the Lebanese crisis remained unresolved.
It also calls on Lebanon to form a national unity government and adopt a new election law.

Cairo is the capital of Egypt and the largest city in the Middle-East and Africa. Its metropolitan area is the 16th largest in the world. Located near the Nile Delta, it was founded in CE 969. Nicknamed "the city of a thousand minarets" for its preponderance of Islamic architecture, Cairo has long been a center of the region's political and cultural life. Cairo was founded by the Fatimid dynasty in the 10th century CE, but the land composing the present-day city was the site of national capitals whose remnants remain visible in parts of Old Cairo. Cairo is also associated with Ancient Egypt as it is close to the ancient cities of Memphis, Giza and Fustat which are near the Great Sphinx and the pyramids of Giza.
Egyptians today often refer to Cairo as Maṣr ([mɑsˤɾ], مصر), the Egyptian Arabic pronunciation of the name for Egypt itself, emphasizing the city's continued role in Egyptian influence.[3][4] Its official name is القاهرة al-Qāhirah , means literally "the Vanquisher" or "the Conqueror"; Egyptian Arabic pronunciation, sometimes it is informally also referred to as كايرو Kayro It is also called Umm al-Dunya, meaning "the mother of the world".
Cairo has the oldest and largest film and music industries in the Arab world, as well as the world's second-oldest institution of higher learning, al-Azhar University. Many international media, businesses, and organizations have regional headquarters in the city; the Arab League has had its headquarters in Cairo for most of its existence.
With a population of 6.76 million spread over 453 square kilometers (175 sq mi), Cairo is by far the largest city in Egypt. With an additional 10 million inhabitants just outside the city, Cairo resides at the center of the largest metropolitan area in Africa and the Arab World as well as the tenth-largest urban area in the world.[citation needed] Cairo, like many other mega-cities, suffers from high levels of pollution and traffic. Cairo's metro—one of only two metros on the African continent (the other the Algiers Metro)—ranks among the fifteen busiest in the world, with over 1 billion annual passenger rides. The economy of Cairo was ranked first in the Middle East and 43rd globally by Foreign Policy's 2010 Global Cities Index.

With a population of 6.8 million[2] spread over 214 square kilometers (83 sq mi), Cairo is by far the largest city in Egypt. With an additional ten million inhabitants just outside the city, Cairo resides at the center of the largest metropolitan area in Africa and the eleventh-largest urban area in the world.[1] Cairo, like many large cities in developing countries, suffers from high levels of pollution and traffic, but its metro currently the only on the African continent also ranks among the fifteen busiest in the world,[3] with over 700 million passenger rides annually.

The suq (which is the Arabic name for bazaar, or market) dates back to 1382, when Emir Djaharks el-Khalili built a big caravanserai (or khan) right here. This caravanserai is still there, you just ask for the narrow street of Sikka Khan el-Khalili and Badestan.

The Cairo Tower is a free-standing concrete TV tower in Cairo. It stands in the Zamalek district on Gezira Island in the Nile River, in the city centre. At 187 meters, it is 43 meters higher than the Great Pyramid of Giza, which stands some 15 km to the southwest.
Over the ages, and as far back as four thousand years, Egypt stood as the land where civilizations have always met.[citation needed] The Pharaohs together with the Greeks and the Romans have left their imprints here. Muslims from the Arabian Peninsula, led by Amr ibn al-A'as, introduced Islam into Egypt. Khedive Mohammad Ali, with his Albanian family roots, put Egypt on the road to modernity. If anything, the cultural mix in this country is natural, given its heritage. Egypt can be likened to an open museum with monuments of the different historical periods on display everywhere.

The part of Cairo that contains Coptic Cairo and Fostat, which contains the Coptic Museum, Babylon Fortress, Hanging Church, the Greek Church of St. George, many other Coptic churches, the Ben Ezra Synagogue and Amr ibn al-'As Mosque.

Arab League chief Nabil al-Arabi called on March 9 for the creation of a unified Arab force to battle the spread of Islamic extremist groups.
"There is an urgent need for the creation of a multi-purpose common Arab military force... able to intervene rapidly to fight terrorism and the activities of terrorist groups," Arabi told a meeting of league foreign ministers in Cairo.
He also stressed the importance of "cooperation in areas related to security protection and the exchange of information between Arab countries."
Arab League deputy chief Ahmed Ben Helli told reporters last week that the bloc's leaders are expected to focus on the creation of such a common force when they meet for its annual summit on March 28-29 in Egypt's Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.
He had said such a force was important as a "symbolic" show of deterrence at times of "conflict or disasters".

Morocco (Listeni/məˈrɒkoʊ/; Arabic: المغرب al-Maġrib; Berber: Muṛṛakuc; French: Maroc[Notes 1]), officially the Kingdom of Morocco,[4] is a country in the Maghreb region of North Africa. Geographically, Morocco is characterized by a rugged mountainous interior and large portions of desert. It is one of only three countries (with Spain and France) to have both Atlantic and Mediterranean coastlines. The Arabic name al-Mamlakah al-Maghribiyah (Arabic: المملكة المغربية, meaning "The Western Kingdom") and Al-Maghrib (Arabic: المغرب, meaning "The West") are commonly used as alternate names.
Morocco has a population of over 33.8 million and an area of 446,550 km2 (172,410 sq mi). Its political capital is Rabat, although the largest city is Casablanca; other major cities include Marrakesh, Tangier, Tetouan, Salé, Fes, Agadir, Meknes, Oujda, Kenitra, and Nador. A historically prominent regional power, Morocco has a history of independence not shared by its neighbours. Its distinct culture is a blend of Arab, indigenous Berber, Sub-Saharan African, and European influences.
Morocco claims the non-self-governing territory of Western Sahara as its Southern Provinces. Morocco annexed the territory in 1975, leading to a guerrilla war with indigenous forces until a cease-fire in 1991. Peace processes have thus far failed to break the political deadlock.
Morocco is a constitutional monarchy with an elected parliament. The King of Morocco holds vast executive and legislative powers, especially over the military, foreign policy and religious affairs. Executive power is exercised by the government, while legislative power is vested in both the government and the two chambers of parliament, the Assembly of Representatives and the Assembly of Councillors. The king can issue decrees called dahirs which have the force of law. He can also dissolve the parliament after consulting the Prime Minister and the president of the Constitutional court.
Morocco's predominant religion is Islam, while the official languages are Berber and Arabic. Moroccan Arabic, referred to as Darija, and French are also widely spoken. Morocco is an influential member of the Arab League and a part of the Union for the Mediterranean. It has the sixth-largest economy in Africa.

The first travel guide on Sri Lanka in Arabic Language penned by a UAE national, was launched yesterday at the Sri Lanka pavilion in the Arabian Travel Market in Dubai.
The author of the book is Heba Al Mansoori. Al Mansoori said the book is a "labour of love" and proceeds from the sale of the book will be donated to a charity. The initial print run of the book is 10,000 copies in both hard bound and soft bound copies. She said that due to the many decades of national conflict in Sri Lanka, some Arab travellers had misconceptions about Sri Lanka and her attempt was to put this to rest.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and United Nations and Arab League Envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura held a press conference on Wednesday, November 4, following a meeting in Moscow.
SOT, Sergei Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister (Russian): "We have agreed to meet in the nearest future, literally within the next two weeks, again in the same format. And we have outlined two concrete tasks that we need to solve on this stage. First of all we need to develop common understanding of which exact groups on Syrian territory are terrorist ones. Yes, we have list of Security Council, but there are also new branches of al-Qaeda, ISIS, and Al-Nusra Front, which are not connected [to that list], but who also use terrorist methods to fish in troubled waters. Everybody has agreed that we need some clarity in this question. The second issue that was imposed as a task or as homework for the upcoming days, and I hope it is not going to be long period, it is to bring some clarity on who exactly is an opposition, which is supposed to be moderate and to become a partner during the negotiations prepared by de Mistura and his team in the context of political regulation of the crisis in Syria."
SOT, Staffan de Mistura, United Nations and Arab League envoy to Syria (English): "And we have a plan. The plan is based on the Geneva Communique and on the Vienna Outline. They mention very clearly a form of all-inclusive governance - we need to work on that quickly - and the working groups that the UN has prepared, and where we hope to have everyone included, are going to work on that direction and should be doing [so] quickly, and then a new constitution and new elections. This is a road map that can be achieved and I think if we maintain the momentum we will get there. Thank you."
SOT, Sergei Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister (Russian): "In order for inter-Syrian, representative, inclusive and trustworthy dialogue to begin, we need all spectrums of Syrian society to be present at the negotiating table, including all groups of opposition. And I want to agree with what Mr. de Mistura has said regarding the necessity for external players, which have decisive influence on different opposition groups, to use their influence to persuade those groups to gather for the political negotiations with constructive basis and so they would not try to pull the blanket, and to form a united delegation and to think just like a government delegation - not about personal destiny, but about their own country and people."

Welcome to Middle East Live. Syria remains the focus. The UN has offered to join the Arab League monitoring mission amid the continuing crackdown on opposition strongholds by president Bashar al-Assad's forces.
Here's a roundup of the latest developments:
• Activists say Syrian forces have renewed their assault on Homs in the heaviest bombardment the city has seen, AP reports. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says at least 12 people were killed Thursday morning but an exact death toll couldn't immediately be determined because of the chaos in the city.
• The United Nations and the Arab League have proposed sending a joint observer mission to try to end the crisis in Syria, UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon has announced.
Ban also suggested that Russia and China's veto of the draft resolution on Syria has been "disastrous for the people of Syria". He said the failure to agree on collective action "has encouraged the Syrian Government to step up its war on its own people".

• Turkish foreign minister Ahmet Davutoglu said the international community needed to provide something more forceful than an observer mission. Speaking to Reuters before flying to Washington for talks on Syria, he said: "It is not enough being an observer. It is time now to send a strong message to the Syrian people that we are with them."
• The west and the Arab world are scrambling to find a new diplomatic strategy without Russian and Chinese help. A "friends of Syria" conference is expected to be called in the next few days to agree joint measures, including new sanctions, anti-Assad resolutions at the UN general assembly, and diplomatic support for the opposition Syrian National Council with the aim of molding it into a credible alternative to the Assad regime. The next steps will be decided at meetings of the Gulf Co-operation Council on Saturday and the Arab League on Sunday.

Here’s another end-times commentary based on reports from Clean TV Jerusalem Bureau Chief John McTernan.
Once again the eyes of the world focus on Jerusalem and its Temple Mount. With Islamic attacks against Israeli security forces and injuries there mounting, daily, the political intrigue surrounding the violence is also escalating.
Author John McTernan reports on the rioting at his Facebook blog, as follows, “Once again, the Temple Mount comes into play as the focus of world attention.
This is not going away but is going to be more and more intense.
It is very possible that the Temple Mount could trigger a war or throw gasoline on a conflict to make it an all-out war.
Notice the timing how the Temple Mount is coming into focus at this time as so much is happening now in the Middle East.
In the very end, the final battle that triggers the prophesied coming of Messiah will be fought over Jerusalem and the Temple Mount.
Events that we are seeing are falling into place for that final battle.”
In fact, the Arab League has protested the “Judaization of the Al Aqsa Mosque by Israel, calling for action against the Jewish State, according to a local TV outlet.
Now is the time for you to arm yourself with information, and share it with those you love.
John McTernan wants you to have the tools you need by offering you his Prophecy Packet, free of charge. If you want one, email Dave at: daystarwindows@optonline.net Make sure to provide him with your name and mailing address.
