Over 100 swimmers were stung by jellyfish at City Beach on Saturday morning - five of them were taken to hospital

They were taking part in a open water swim event organised by Swimming WA.

A spokeswoman for St John Ambulance said three ambulances were sent to the scene and the five most seriously hurt swimmers were taken to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.

The City Beach event saw more than 550 people take to the waves.

"A clinical paramedic and one of our managers also attended the scene to make sure people were receiving the treatment they needed," she said.

One swimmer, Caroline Young, posted pictures of her stings on the Facebook site of Open Water Swimming WA.

"I have been to the doctor and had oral steroids and prescription steroid cream. Still burning at 2.00pm," she said.
