How To use Bloomberg To Get Most Profit
Welcome to the Beginner's Guide to Bloomberg. This portion of the guide is aimed at new Bloomberg users, and will provide an overview of how to use a Bloomberg terminal. If you are a more experienced user, or if after reading this guide you want to go into more detail on Bloomberg's capabilities, please be on the lookout for the Advanced Guide to Bloomberg which will soon follow. (For more, see Day Trading Strategies For Beginners.)
In this Basic Guide, we will examine how to sign up for, install and access Bloomberg. We will then go on to covering basic navigation on the Bloomberg system. Navigating Bloomberg is somewhat unique in that the system uses a special keyboard with some keys that are different from those found on a "normal" keyboard. Therefore, the navigation section of this guide will be important to newcomers.
After gaining a working knowledge of these basics, in chapter four we will then move on to discuss some of the market and news monitor functions that are available on Bloomberg. Chapter five will focus on the basics of analyzing securities on Bloomberg. Advanced functionality in this area will be covered in the Advanced Guide; in this Basic Guide we will focus more closely on the types of analysis that Bloomberg allows users to perform. Finally, chapter six will provide some tips and tricks for navigating Bloomberg and getting the maximum possible benefit from this remarkable machine, while chapter 7 will provide a summary and conclusion.

Bloomberg Terminal Our Newest Top 25 Tips And Tricks Nov 2014
The Bloomberg Terminal is a computer system provided by Bloomberg L.P. that enables professionals in finance and other industries to access the Bloomberg Professional service through which users can monitor and analyze real-time financial market data and place trades on the electronic trading platform.[1] The system also provides news, price quotes, and messaging across its proprietary secure network.
Most large financial firms have subscriptions to the Bloomberg Professional service. Many exchanges charge their own additional fees for access to real time price feeds across the terminal. The same applies to various news organizations.
All Bloomberg Terminals are leased in two-year cycles (in the late 90's and early 2000s, three year contracts were an option), with leases originally based on how many displays were connected to each terminal (this predates the move to Windows based hardware). Most Bloomberg setups have between two and six displays. It is available for an annual fee of $20,000 per user ($24,000 per year for the small number of firms that use only one terminal).[2] As of May 2010, there were 315,000 Bloomberg Terminal subscribers worldwide.[3]

CAPTION: Mayor Michael Bloomberg is helping Delta Air Lines celebrate the start of a $160 million terminal expansion at LaGuardia Airport. The mayor and Lt. Gov. Robert Duffy were on hand for the ceremonial groundbreaking Wednesday. (April 11)
----------------------------------------
[VO:]
(Mayor Michael Bloomberg, New York)
You know when the historic expansion of Delta's service at LaGuardia gets completed this summer, it will add 100 new daily flights to and from our city and will make New York and even bigger hub. And LaGuardia will become an even more attractive place for business travelers that are the airports bread and butter and this expansion. And also not incidentally the people who's jobs these are, this expansion creates 135 construction jobs here at LaGuardia and will also add 700 permanent Delta Airlines jobs at LaGuardia.
(Richard Anderson, CEO, Delta Airlines)
"so our commitment to New York isn't just the $160 million dollar investment here, we have a $1.4 billion construction project underway right now at terminal 4 at JFK where we're the largest operator in JFK."
(Gail Grimmett, Vice President for New York, Delta Airlines)
"What you will see when we go down to the ramp, we will be breaking ground on what will be a 600-foot connector, that will connect this terminal D to our new terminal at terminal C for our customers."

Markets hit by Greece worries, though Greek market recovers somewhat. British unemployment lowest since July 2008, though inflation stuck at 0%. But early U.K. market rise turns to rout after Debt Management Office forced to postpone a $4.5 billion bond sale because of Bloomberg terminals outage. Aircraft engine maker Rolls-Royce gets biggest order in its history from Emirates Airlines. Ryanair told it must sell nearly 25% of Irish rival Aer Lingus. Volkswagen has strong 1st quarter but says good sales not automatic for rest of year.

For the increasingly connected finance professionals that we design for at Bloomberg, having a strategy that meets the demand and remains scalable and usable in a mobile context has been anything but simple. During this talk, I’ll share the Mobile Design Team’s experience and current thinking as we hit the limits of download sizes, scalable navigation, ergonomics and physical accommodations in order to provide the same service to our users when they are away from the Bloomberg Terminal.

Michael Rubens Bloomberg (born February 14, 1942) is an American business magnate, politician and philanthropist. He served as the 108th Mayor of New York City, holding office for three consecutive terms beginning with his first election in 2001. With a net worth of $34 billion, he is the eleventh-richest person in the United States and the sixteenth-wealthiest in the world.
He is the founder and 88% owner of Bloomberg L.P., the global financial data and media company notable for its Bloomberg Terminal.
Bloomberg began his career at the securities brokerage Salomon Brothers before forming his company in 1981 and spending the next twenty years as its chairman and CEO. He also served as chairman of the board of trustees at his alma mater Johns Hopkins University from 1996 to 2002. A Democrat before seeking elective office, Bloomberg switched his party registration in 2001 to run for mayor as a Republican. He defeated opponent Mark Green in a close election held just weeks after the September 11 terrorist attacks. Bloomberg won a second term in 2005 and left the Republican Party two years later. He campaigned to weaken the city's term limits law and was elected to his third term in 2009 as an independent candidate on the Republican ballot line.
He was frequently mentioned as a possible candidate for the U.S. presidential elections in 2008 and 2012, and for New York Governor in 2010. He declined to seek either office, instead opting to continue serving as Mayor of New York. On January 1, 2014, Bill de Blasio succeeded Bloomberg as mayor of New York City.
On January 31, 2014, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced that he had appointed Mr. Bloomberg as his Special Envoy for Cities and Climate Change, assisting him in consultations with mayors and related key stakeholders to raise political will and mobilize action among cities as part of a long-term strategy to advance efforts on climate change.

Bloomberg L.P. is a privately held financial software, data and media company headquartered in New York City. Bloomberg L.P. was founded by Michael Bloomberg in 1981 with the help of Thomas Secunda, Duncan MacMillan, Charles Zegar[6] and a 30% ownership investment by Merrill Lynch.[7] Bloomberg L.P. provides financial software tools such as an analytics and equity trading platform, data services and news to financial companies and organizations through the Bloomberg terminal (via its Bloomberg Professional Service), its core money-generating product.[8] Bloomberg L.P. also includes a wire service (Bloomberg News), a global television network (Bloomberg Television), a radio station (WBBR), websites, subscription-only newsletters and three magazines: Bloomberg Businessweek, Bloomberg Markets and "Bloomberg Pursuit".
In 1981, Salomon Brothers was acquired, and Michael Bloomberg, a general partner, was given a $10 million partnership settlement.[10] Bloomberg, having designed in-house computerized financial systems for Salomon, used his $10 million severance check to start Innovative Market Systems (IMS).[11] Bloomberg developed and built his own computerized system to provide real-time market data, financial calculations and other financial analytics to Wall Street firms. In 1983, Merrill Lynch invested $30 million in IMS to help finance the development of "the Bloomberg" terminal computer system and by 1984, IMS was selling machines to all of Merrill Lynch's clients.

Bloomberg Business News was conceived as a way of expanding the services offered through the terminal. According to Matthew Winkler, then a writer for the Wall Street Journal, Michael Bloomberg telephoned him in November 1989 and asked, "What would it take to get into the news business?" Knowing that Bloomberg had no experience in journalism, Winkler presented him with a hypothetical ethical dilemma:
"You have just published a story that says the chairman --- and I mean chairman --- of your biggest customer has taken $5 million from the corporate till. He is with his secretary at a Rio de Janeiro resort, and the secretary's spurned boyfriend calls to tip you off. You get an independent verification that the story is true. Then the phone rings. The customer's public-relations person says, 'Kill the story or we will return all the terminals we currently rent from you.'"
"What would you do?" Winkler asked.
"Go with the story," Bloomberg replied. "Our lawyers will love the fees you generate."[6]
Winkler recalls this as his "deciding moment," the time at which he became willing to help Bloomberg build his news organization.[6]
The purpose of the service was to provide up-to-the-minute financial news communicated in a concise and intelligent way.[7] As a fledgling company in 1990, Bloomberg hoped that the news service would spread the company name, sell more Bloomberg Terminals and end Bloomberg's reliance on the Dow Jones News Services, a valuable subscriber service for the Terminal.[8]
The creation of Bloomberg Business News required Winkler to open a Bloomberg office in Washington, D.C. in order to report about political effects on the business world. However, the Standing Committee of Correspondents (SCC) in Washington required Bloomberg News be formally accredited to act as a legitimate news source, a title that Bloomberg Business News only accomplished after agreeing to provide free Terminals to major newspapers in exchange for news space in the publications.[8] This accreditation led to an annual growth over 35% until 1995.[8] During this growth period Bloomberg News opened a small television station in New York, purchased New York Radio Station WNEW, launched fifteen-minute weekday business news programs for broadcast on PBS and opened offices in Hong Kong and Frankfurt, Germany.[8] By 1995, Bloomberg News had 335 reporters in 56 locations.[9]
The initial goal of Bloomberg Business News to increase Terminal sales was adequately met by the mid-nineties and refocused the scope to their news service in order to rival the profitability of other media groups such as Reuters and Dow Jones. This led to the creation of Bloomberg's magazine, Bloomberg Personal in 1995, which would be carried in the Sunday edition of 18 U.S. papers.[9] Also in 1995, Bloomberg launched a 24-hour financial news service through Bloomberg Information Television and began wiring its Terminals through DirectTV. This simultaneously occurred with the launch of a web site to provide audio feed of radio broadcasts.[8]
Bloomberg Business News was renamed Bloomberg News in 1997. By this time Bloomberg News content was carried in over 800 newspapers worldwide and was syndicated through Bloomberg Television and 40 international affiliates.[9]
In 2009 Bloomberg News partnered with The Washington Post to launch a global news service known as The Washington Post News Service with Bloomberg News. Hosting content from both news sources, the service hopes to pair the political experience of The Washington Post with the global financial economic news of Bloomberg News.[10]
In April 2014, Bloomberg News launched a new section, Bloomberg Luxury, which focuses on luxury living. According to an internal memo obtained by WWD, Chris Rovzar, the former digital editor of Vanity Fair, will help Bloomberg build its editorial vision for luxury.[11] The section's content provides information on topics including travel, wine news, dining, auto news, gadgets, and more. Review of technology and high-end autos are published weekly. It also highlights content from Bloomberg's quarterly lifestyle and luxury magazine Pursuits.

Here's what's in your Prime Interest today:
Are Bitcoins a Ponzi scheme? That's what the headlines in the media suggest the Securities Exchange Commission is alleging. However, the SEC is simply investigating whether the new crypto-currencies are being used as a tool to lure investors into an illegal investment scheme. Whether or not this is true, the smear campaign against alternative currencies continues. In a press release, the SEC stated "Investors should understand that regardless of the type of investment, a promise of high returns with little or no risk is a classic warning sign of fraud." Well, don't tell that to Fannie and Freddie. At least China got out.
And there was a natural gas explosion on an unmanned rig off the coast of Louisiana on Tuesday. The blaze has been described as "out of control." No injuries were reported on the nearby jackup rig, but a natural gas cloud and a very large light sheen was reported. The operator of the well stated no "oil" was spilled, but again it's a natural gas rig. Curiously the well that exploded was a sidetrack well, which is usually used to overcome an engineering problem with the original well. We'll stay on top of this story as it develops.
And, we have a Bloomberg-gate update. That would be the scandal where Bloomberg reporters were allegedly spying on Bloomberg terminal users, including such power users as Ben Bernanke and Tim Geithner. Well, the current attorney general of New York, Eric Schneiderman, who was funded by George Soros, is now investigating the matter.
The AG position is one that Eliot Spitzer held before becoming governor. Spitzer is now once again seeking elected office as New York City Comptroller, to oversee the city's $140 billion pension fund. Oh, and Mayor Bloomberg himself is suing the current Comptroller. Break out the popcorn, because we smell a Gangs of New York-style fight brewing here. Bob talks dysfunctional politics with Lew Rockwell. And Perianne profile the dysfunctional city of Detroit, as well.

Cheniere Energy is able to take part of a duopoly that is strengthening the ability for the U.S. to capitalize on low natural gas prices and abundance of natural gas by exporting it to foreign countries. Next year, Cheniere Energy will have a monopoly in the LNG export industry for a projected two years. In this video, we highlight the mass potential that Cheniere has in the energy markets by going through the overall economic condition of natural gas & Cheniere's future plans. Even with the meteoric rise in the stock price, Investary Group believes that the company is still in its early stages.

Cheniere Energy is able to take part of a duopoly that is strengthening the ability for the U.S. to capitalize on low natural gas prices and abundance of natural gas by exporting it to foreign countries. Sabine Pass is the only LNG export terminal that is under construction that is expected to be finished next year.

Lesson Outline:
Question that came in the other day:
“In a DCF model, how do you normalize the FCF for the firm in the last year of the projection period? I thought you just had to remove non-recurring charges to normalize it, but the interviewer seemed to want something more.”
“So how do you normalize Free Cash Flow in a DCF?”
To answer this question, remember what Terminal Value in a DCF represents: the sum of the PV of the company’s Free Cash Flows beyond the final projection year of a DCF into infinity.
Often, you calculate the Terminal Value based on the Final Year FCF and an FCF Growth Rate:
Terminal Value = Final Year FCF * (1 + FCF Growth Rate) / (Discount Rate – FCF Growth Rate)
This growth rate is often linked to GDP growth, inflation, etc.
PROBLEM: What if a company’s Free Cash Flows in the projection period are not consistent with its Free Cash Flows in its “steady state,” i.e. within the Terminal Period?
For example, what if you’re analyzing a biotech/pharmaceutical company and its Final Year FCF is the year a key drug patent expires – then its revenue and FCF will fall off a cliff in the following years!
Yes, that is an extreme example, but there are plenty of other issues that might come up for “normal” (i.e., non-biotech/pharma) companies:
Issue #1: Does the revenue growth rate make sense?
Issue #2: Are the margins reasonable?
Issue #3: Do CapEx and D&A; make sense?
Issue #4: Are the Working Capital requirements similar to the historical ones?
Issue #5: Is the tax rate free of the impact of NOLs, tax credits, and other items that expire or get used up over time?
How to Normalize the Terminal Year FCF in Real Life
Application #1: We’re assuming a lower revenue growth rate of ~5% because the company’s key product patent expires 1-2 years before the final year, so it will probably grow at a much lower rate going forward until it “strikes gold” again.
Application #2: We’re adjusting the EBIT margin down to 45% because its key product (Xyrem) is far less profitable with lower prices (due to generics) in the Terminal Period.
Application #3: We can’t assume that the big Amortization of Intangibles expense and non-cash add-back will continue indefinitely because it expires a few years after the end of the final year.
Application #4: We’re making CapEx as a % of revenue slightly lower to reflect lower re-investment in the business… but it still stays above D&A; as a % of revenue.
Application #5: We’re also making the Change in WC as a % of the Change in Revenue slightly lower, because the expiring patents threw off some of the projection-period numbers here.
Check: What does the Normalized Year FCF look like now? Is the growth rate more consistent?
Taxes, NOLs, and Tax Credits
If a company has Net Operating Losses (NOLs), tax credits, etc., they should not apply forever. They’ll expire or be used up at some point! So you need to account for this and make sure they do not reduce a company’s cash taxes forever.
What to AVOID When Normalizing FCF
Do not set CapEx equal to Depreciation – it’s not justified due to inflation, productivity/technology gains, and FCF growth in the Terminal Period (which tends to require an increasing asset base).
Don’t assume HIGHER Growth or Margins: This approach very rarely makes sense – what company grows at a faster rate 10 years into the future?
And don’t assume that tax benefits such as those from NOLs continue indefinitely.

Nov 2014 Bloomberg Game Changers Sergey Brin & Larry Page Google Full Story
According to interviewees in “Game Changers,” Bloomberg TV’s documentary on the founding of Google, Sergey Brin and Larry Page, the company’s co-founders, wanted none other than Steve Jobs to serve as Google’s inaugural CEO.
Yahoo Finance:
The story goes that, after interviewing 12 or 13 candidates they didn’t like, Page and Brin happened to make something of a social visit to Apple and Jobs.
After the visit, the Google cofounders met with investor John Doerr and asked him: why can’t we hire that guy?
Game Changers doesn’t have the exact quote, but we figure he told Page and Brin something along the lines of, “are you nuts?”
As tantalizing a what-if as that might be, Apple’s probably the better fit for Jobs; in addition to being the company’s co-founder, it’s hard to make algorithms flashy.
