"I personally am surprised that I ended up here," Snowden said in the interview, an excerpt of which aired on TODAY on Wednesday morning. Snowden's comments about his new home came in an extended, wide-ranging interview with Williams, his first with a U.S. television network, airs Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET on NBC. "The reality is I never intended to end up in Russia," he said. "I had a flight booked to Cuba onwards to Latin America and I was stopped because the United States government decided to revoke my passport and trap me in Moscow Airport. "So when people ask why are you in Russia, I say, 'Please ask the State Department." Secretary of State John Kerry hit back in a live interview on TODAY. "For a supposedly smart guy, that's a pretty dumb answer, frankly," Kerry said. "If Mr. Snowden wants to come back to the United States today, we'll have him on a flight today. "We'd be delighted for him to come back. He should come back. That's what a patriot would do. A patriot would not run away and look for refuge in Russia or Cuba or some other country. A patriot would stand up in the United States and make his case to the American people," Kerry added. "He can come home but he's a fugitive from justice which is why he is not being permitted to fly around the world," he said. Asked whether he had changed his mind about the nature of Snowden's actions, Kerry said Snowden "stole" information and did "great damage" to the United States. "The fact is if he cares so much about America and he believes in America, he should trust in the American system of justice," Kerry said. "But to be hiding in Russia, an authoritarian country, and to have just admitted he was really just trying to get to Cuba — what does that tell you?" he added. "I think he's confused. I think it's very sad." In an interview with Chuck Todd on MSNBC, Kerry called Snowden a "coward" and a "traitor." "There are many a patriot. You can go back to the Pentagon Papers with Dan Ellsberg and others who stood and went to court system of America and made their case." He said Snowden's leaks had concrete effects. "What he's done is expose for terrorists a lot of mechanisms which now affect operational security of those terrorists and make it harder for the United States to break up plots, harder to protect our nation," he said. Kerry was also asked about Snowden's exclusive NBC News interview while appearing on CBS. "He should man up and come back to the United States," the secretary of state said. "Edward Snowden, in an exclusive interview with "Nightly News" anchor Brian Williams, is fighting back against critics who dismissed him as a low-level hacker — saying he was "trained as a spy" and offered technical expertise to high levels of government. "I was trained as a spy in sort of the traditional sense of the word, in that I lived and worked undercover overseas — pretending to work in a job that I'm not — and even being assigned a name that was not mine," Snowden said in the interview." Edward Snowden NBC Interview - I was Trained as a Spy
Edward Snowden NBC Interview - I was Trained as a Spy
Brian Williams nabbed an exclusive interview with Edward Snowden for NBC News. Full interview airs tonight on NBC. Snowden is still wanted for leaking classified NSA data in June 2013, and is currently living in exile in Russia. Williams traveled to Moscow for the interview. In advance of this highly-anticipated interview, NBC News has released a clip in which Snowden details his professional background. He has been alternately labeled everything from a "hacker" to a "low level analyst" in the media, but according to Snowden, the truth is a bit more complicated. He explained to Williams that he was "trained as a spy in sort of the traditional sense of the word." He went on to explain that he lived and worked undercover under a false name in foreign countries. In response to the "low level analyst" claims, Snowden said the government is "trying to use one position that I've had in a career here or there to distract from the totality of my experience." He then detailed his background, saying that he'd worked for the NSA and the CIA overseas, and worked for the DIA as a lecturer at the Joint Counterintelligence Training Academy. Snowden did indicate that he worked primarily with computer systems, and not with people, but he said it was "somewhat misleading" to classify him as a "low level analyst." The full interview with Brian Williams will air on "NBC Nightly News" Tonight, May 28th, at 10 Eastern Time. 7 PM on the West Coast.- published: 28 May 2014

Brian Williams: Edward Snowden Is 'Blindingly Smart'
Brian Williams: Edward Snowden Is 'Blindingly Smart'
How did Brian Williams become the first American journalist to score an exclusive, in-person interview with former NSA contractor Edward Snowden? Ahead of tonight's NBC News special presentation, Williams spoke to The New York Times' Bill Carter about the various challenges that went in to setting up the meeting in Moscow and shared his personal impressions of the "enigmatic" man. "We were worried about a number of things," Williams told Carter, mentioning concerns about how much the Russians would be monitoring their every move while his team was there. "A former administration official told us: 'Don't kid yourself, they know who you are, who you are coming to see, and everything you will do while you are there.'" Williams flew from New York to London to Moscow, with his bags getting lost in transit. If they had not arrived just hours before Snowden did, he joked, "We would have been out looking for a suit at Saks-ski's." "This is an enigmatic guy," Williams said of Snowden. "We've only seen him in video from Skype appearances and the video he did from a hotel in Hong Kong." He added, "He is blindingly smart. Pay no attention to the fact that he only has a G.E.D. from high school. I joked about how, here we were, two guys with high school degrees, both dropouts from the otherwise great American community college system." While Williams was happy to share his opinions of Snowden the man, he was reluctant to say how he felt about what Snowden did. "I am an American citizen with my own complicated thoughts on this subject," he said. "My thoughts simply are not germane. I put those aside and tried to ask questions a diverse audience would be interested in." The anchor did share more of his opinions on leaks in general when he sat down with Jon Stewart on The Daily Show last year, just days before the Snowden story broke. "Leaks are how we have learned about a lot of stories, especially in the last 10 years — this so-called war on terrorism," he said at the time. "I think we will find our way. The attorney general is in a rough spot over this and to a lesser extent, the president."- published: 28 May 2014
