Travel video about destination South East Asia.
South East Asia is a fascinating, atmospheric and exotic world full of unspoiled nature and cultural treasures and a region in which both past and present live side by side and unite in a wonderful way. Myanmar, The Land Of Golden Pagodas: for decades the rulers of what was once known as Burma closed the country’s doors to the outside world and many of its fine religious sanctuaries were badly neglected but they have now gradually been given the respect that they deserve. Inlay Lake is home to the Inthas, one of the many tribes that came to Myanmar from various of South East Asia’s neighbouring countries. Throughout the area are the floating plantations of the Inthas on which tomatoes, cucumbers and beans are cultivated. A journey on the Shan State Express provides passengers with a fascinating insight into the life of the Shan people whose lives are dominated by agriculture. The north west of Myanmar is known for its many splendid sacred buildings such as Mingun’s Hsinbyume Pagoda that was built at the beginning of the nineteenth century. It was constructed according to the architectural rules of Hindu Buddhist cosmology and symbolizes the World Mountain of Meru.. One of Taiwan’s most important centres of arts and crafts is located in the west of the island, Lukang, an ancient and idyllic town full of age-old traditions whose large number of beautiful temples is most impressive. In Cambodia and around forty kilometres north of Phnom Penh is the former capital city of Udong. Today only the remains of the city’s former splendid buildings indicate that it was the last centre of Angkor’s power with hundreds of dwellings and temples. The ruins of Ayutthaya indicate the impressive dimensions of the former capital of ancient Thailand and one of the mightiest royal cities in South East Asia.

The Living House is a pioneering work by respected anthropologist Roxana Waterson that has become a classic in its field. It is first book of its kind to present a detailed picture of houses within the complex social and symbolic fabric of indigenous South-East Asian peoples. The main focus of the book is on Indonesia, but in tracing historical links between architectural forms across the region, it reveals a much wider field of inquiry—covering all of the Austronesian peoples and cultures extending as far afield as Madagascar, Japan and the Pacific islands to New Zealand and Hawaii. As it probes the centrally significant role of houses within South-East Asian social systems, The Living House reveals new insights into the kinship systems, gender symbolism and cosmological principles of the peoples who build them, ultimately uncovering fundamental themes concerning the concepts of life force and life processes inherent in all of these cultures.A vivid picture is produced of how people shape buildings and buildings shape people—how rules about layout and spatial usage impact social relationships. The book concludes with a consideration of present-day changes affecting the fates of indigenous cultures and architectures throughout the region. This book will be of tremendous interest to architects and historians, and anyone interested in the indigenous art and cultures of South-East Asia.

Sutapatti market is one of the most popular commercial hubs in Muzaffarpur. The businessmen there claim it is Asia’s largest cloth market.
“There is not a cloth manufactured anywhere in South Asia that you cannot find here,” says Motilal Chhapria, leader of a traders’ association.
One gets a sense of impending gloom when these traders speak of the possible outcome of a Mahagatbandhan win.
They agree unanimously that Nitish Kumar was the best Chief Minister Bihar ever had. His ‘unholy alliance’ with Lalu, as they put it, has put them in a fix. Most claim they would have voted for JDU had Nitish contested the elections alone.

With Manipur also known as “Little Paradise on earth”, using it as the setting for a festival is a natural choice.
The Sangai Festival of 2013 was a grand event. Local cuisine, attire, dances and traditions were celebrated with other countries from the Asian region - Myanmar, Thailand and China were welcomed warmly as part of this festive occasion.
The Sangai Festival, previously known as the Tourism festival, was renamed in 2010. The state animal of Manipur, the Sangai Deer, being the inspiration for the name. The deer’s name “Sangai” was encouraged due to its peculiar posture and behavior while running. This Sangai, rare and only found in Manipur, bears resemblance to species found in Thailand, Myanmar and China, all belonging to the same family.
The Manipur Sangai Festival is held annually from 21 – 30 November and is the largest festival organized by the Tourism Department of Manipur. It is held at Kangjeibung, or the Polo ground.
The Bheigya Chandra Open Air Theater at the Palace Compound hosted the cultural part of the festival and featured performances from various institutes across several Manipur districts like Senapati, Tamenglong, Chura Chandpur, Chandel and Ukhrul. Performances were not only from Manipur - the neighboring states of Sikkim and Assam were also part of the program. The open-air theater had a busy program schedule every day of the festival.
For those interested in art, the Mandalay Art Club hosted a Myanmar art exhibition on the second day of the festival. A fashion show was hosted to showcase designs of the designers of the region while another show featured only the traditional attire of Manipur.
Visitors had the opportunity to watch the indigenous sports of Manipur like Sagol Kangjei - the local version of polo. Other indigenous sports played were Thang ta or Manipuri martial arts and Mukna kangjei, or foot hockey. The 7th Manipur Polo International competition was the highlight of the festival, with teams from India, Germany, Thailand and the US competing for the prize. This game is played on the Manipuri Pony, a rare variety of equine found only within the state.
Stalls, set up on the polo ground, boasted handicrafts from the region, as well as a variety of indigenous food items.
Adventure sports were a big attraction as Zorbing and trekking were organised by the Mountaineering and Trekking Association of Manipur. For the more adventurous, there was paragliding, hosted at the Koirengei airfield. The Loktak Lake joined in the festivities by hosting a fishing competition and a boat race.
This spectacular exhibition of everything truly Manipur, ended with a closing ceremony of choreographed on the theme of 'Manipur Culture' at the BOAT, Palace Compound.
At the Sangai Festival visitors not only come an incredibly scenic location but gain insight into a magical, Shangri-Laesque world.

On Our Own is about an 8000 mile journey by bicycle through the heart of Southeast Asia. Anne and Mike Poe, an American couple in their mid-fifties, journeyed for six months from Bali, Indonesia through Java, Sumatra, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and China until finally reaching Hong Kong. Experience the Poes' unique adventure as they sojourn on their own with no guides to show them the way, no organized tours to fix all the problems and no translators to read the menus. Their stories tell the truth about what it really feels like to travel into the lives of the local populations. Meet head on the rising aspirations of a Third World continent banging at the door of change yet still very much imprisoned by the infrastructure and philosophical viewpoints of its past. It is, without doubt, a prime region for provocative travel experiences. A lifelong passion for adventure travel gave rise to the exotic idea. The time was right; go before the East became too like the West and while they were still young and eager. They went with their two Specialized Rock Hopper mountain bikes, two T-shirts, two pairs of riding shorts, one long pant for modesty, a 35 mm camera, 100 rolls of film, and six Lonely Planet phrase books (one for each strange language they would have to learn to communicate). They would flourish, flounder, and challenge their physical and emotional stamina as they intermingled in the daily lives of the local populations. On Our Own tells the tales in stinging and hilarious reality of Anne's and Mike's reactions to and interactions with the varied people and the intriguing cultures they encountered along the way: spirit worshipping Balinese who wore their culture proudly through the streets; hard working Javanese pressured into a meager life by over-population and competition; over-zealous Sumatrans screaming hello, chasing Anne and Mike and pulling them off their bikes; reserved Thais always ready with a helping hand; gracious Vietnamese plodding against heavy odds into a brighter future; enigmatic Chinese, pushing the western concept of honesty to the brink of extinction. Anne conveys with astonishing truth what it takes to cope with events from day to day when totally immersed in an unfamiliar world. On Our Own's stories rise out of everyday ordinary experiences made extraordinary by place, culture, custom and language. Their remarkable journey reveals a world so many know so little about.

This is the engaging story of an intrepid unsupported cycling trip in Southeast Asia. From the ethereal beauty of Sapa’s hill-tribe country in the Tonkinese Alps on the Chinese border, to the Viet Cong tunnels in the south of Vietnam, this tale will captivate you. Become absorbed in the scene in Bangkok’s backpacker ghetto and the frenetic energy-charged cities of Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand. Follow the author along the Mekong River from the Golden Triangle in the north of Thailand on a slow boat to the alluring Laotian town of Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Cycle through the 1000-year-old alleys of Hanoi’s Old Quarter to sample street food and enjoy a local bia hoi (fresh beer). - Read how to travel light and cheaply; - How to train for and complete a long distance tour; - How to stretch your budget by finding cheap digs and food while avoiding scams; - How to cut down on bike weight and get by with minimal gear; - How to be self-sufficient on a bike on the backroads of SEAsia; - Learn what are appropriate bikes and equipment for these cities and rural backwaters.

Goats for sale in cattle market at Sonepur fair. Buy high breed horses of your choice at Asia's largest cattle fair. You can get the best deal here. People from different villages come to the cattle fair and inspect the horses before buying one. Goats different breed can be found here at the fair.
The Sonepur Cattle Fair or Malegaon Mela is held on Kartik Poornima (the full moon day) in the month of November in Sonepur, Bihar, on the confluence of river Ganges and Gandak. It is also known as Harihar Kshetra Mela and it attracts visitors from all over Asia. Till date, it is the biggest cattle fair of Asia and stretches on from fifteen days to one month. It has its origins during ancient times. This is when Chandragupta Maurya used to buy elephants and horses across the river Ganges. The Sonepur Cattle Fair once used to attract traders from places as distant as Central Asia.
Many farm animals can be bought at the Sonepur mela from all breeds of dogs, buffaloes, donkeys, ponies, Persian horses, rabbits, goats and even the occasional camel. Many varieties of birds and poultry are also available. The area that attracts all, however, is the Haathi Bazaar where elephants are lined up for sale. The Sonepur Fair is the only one where such a large number of elephants are traded - although they cannot legally be sold. Numerous stalls are also set up at the grounds of the Sonepur Cattle Fair. You will find a wide variety of goods in these stalls, ranging from garments, to weapons and furniture, toys, utensils and agricultural implements, jewelry and handicrafts. Major attraction is the sight of numerous elephants, beautifully decorated for the purpose of sale.

Traffic Jam from Manipur performing during the third edition of Northeast festival at IGNCA ground in Delhi.
India’s North East, comprising 8 states of Assam, Arunachal, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim have enormous potential and tourism propositions. North East Festival is organised by the reputed socio-cultural trust, Trend MMS, in association with IGNCA.
The capital city of New Delhi came alive with beautiful colours of the Northeast region of India over the past three days, as the North East Festival was held at IGNCA from 16th to 18th October, 2015.The 3rd edition of the festival, which was bigger and better than before with some special additions, saw a footfall of over 3 lakh people, who thronged the festival for a first-hand experience of the very best that the North East has to offer.
Music, dance, fashion, food, exhibition of art, photography, cartoon, traditional sports, film, discussions and much more was at display in the three day festival. With support of Delhi Tourism many foreign tourists came to visit North East Festival and took part in various activities. Around 50 artisans/weavers/textile entrepreneurs of NER showcased their unique designs and participated in buyer-seller interactions.
The festival saw an unprecedented line-up of established and upcoming music talents, culture and fashion. Around 40 bands performed, and the top designers and gen-next designers from North East showcased their creations. Painting, photography, cartoon exhibition, live sketch, handloom-handicrafts of the region proved to be great draw among the audience.
Dazzling fashion shows saw models walk up the ramp in stunning outfits from the region, around 20 designers participated in the show.

The First Annual Future of War Conference brings together a diverse, interdisciplinary collection of experts to discuss the profound social, political, economic, and cultural implications of the changing nature of war and conflict. The theme of the event is “How is Warfare Changing?,” which we explore through a consideration of three sub-themes: “How Are Emerging Technologies and Strategies Redefining the Practice of War?;” “Are We Living in a Forever War?;” and “Can We Better Understand How Warfare is Evolving by Reflecting on History?” The conference also launches the Future of War Project, which links New America, a DC-based think tank and civic engagement enterprise, and Arizona State University, one of the nation’s largest and most innovative public research universities.
CNN is the leading media partner for the conference and will live-stream panels on CNN.com. DefenseOne will also be a media partner for this event.
