Around the world, the village of Lamalera on the island of Lembata on Flores is known as the home of traditional whale hunting. Portuguese documents dating back to 1643 already mention that these heroic hunts were sighted then.
In Lamalera, villagers hunt large sea animals, like whales, manta rays and sometimes dolphins to provide food and a living for the entire village, which they undertake on simple sailboats and following ancient beliefs, taboos and tradition.
It is for these reasons, therefore, that the Lamalera whale hunts are until this day exempt from the international ban on whaling, considering the traditional way this is still done and the fact that hunting these giant ocean creatures help villagers support their subsistence economy.
Annually, whales migrate between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific during May through October, when these giant sea animals pass the Savu sea right at the doorstep of the island of Lembata. For Lembata, therefore, whale hunting starts on 1 May reaching its peak in July.
When a whale hunt is decided, a number of boats parked on the beach are released from their simple shelters, cheered on by the entire village , and a troupe of boats will set sail together to catch their harvest.
Before that, however, everyone gathers to attend a dedicated mass led by the local Catholic priest to pray for a succesful and safe expedition. For, the majority of the inhabitants here are Catholic.
The actual whaling is still done on traditonally flimsy wooden boats, called peledang. These are manned by between 7 – 14 helmsmen, oarsmen and harpooner, where each is assigned his special duties. The most agile of the team stands on the bow ready with a barbed harpoon.
When a whale or manta is sighted, he throws his harpoon into the animal jumping down on the harpoon itself so as to give it his additional weight. When the target is a huge sperm whale and it is a hit, other team members throw more harpoons on the prey. And when it is finally disabled, together all team members heave up the heavy body onto the boat. Other villages who also hunt for whales are from the Lamakera village on the island of Solor, but the Lamalera village is the most well known.
During one season, islanders may catch between 15 to 20 whales.

Weekuri Lake (sometimes referred to as Waikuri lake) is an incredible salted water lake located near Mandorak, west Sumba.
Water is constantly flowing in and out of the lake with waves coming from the ocean through some holes underneath the rocks that separate the lake from the ocean. Because of that, there is no stagnating water in the lake.
The shallow part of the lake is sandy but sea life is quite abundant in the deepest part (2 to 3 meters) where some corals (SPS and LPS), crutaceans and fish can be found. The ecosystem is however very fragile and tourists are asked to be extremely cautious not to litter or walk on corals.
At 01islands, we go there for a quick swim as much as we can to check on the place and some land we own on the north shore
We endeavour to set up a preservation program together with the Bupati in order to keep this natural wonder intact.

Sumba on wikipedia:
Sumba (Indonesian: Pulau Sumba) is an island in eastern Indonesia, is one of the Lesser Sunda Islands, and is in the province of East Nusa Tenggara. Sumba has an area of 11,153 km2, and the population was 656,259 at the 2010 Census. To the northwest of Sumba is Sumbawa, to the northeast, across the Sumba Strait (Selat Sumba), is Flores, to the east, across the Savu Sea, is Timor, and to the south, across part of the Indian Ocean, is Australia.
Historically, this island exported sandalwood and was known as Sandalwood Island.
Before colonization by western Europeans in the 1500s, Sumba was inhabited by Australian and Polynesian people.[citation needed] In 1522 the first ships from Europe arrived, and by 1866 Sumba belonged to the Dutch East Indies, although the island did not come under real Dutch administration until the twentieth century. Jesuits opened a mission in Laura, West Sumba in 1866.
Despite contact with western cultures, Sumba is one of the few places in the world in which megalithic burials, are used as a 'living tradition' to inter prominent individuals when they die. Burial in megaliths is a practice that was used in many parts of the world during the Neolithic and Bronze Ages, but has survived to this day in Sumba, and has raised significant interest from scholars. At Anakalang, for instance, quadrangular adzes have been unearthed. Another long-lasting tradition is the sometimes lethal game of pasola, in which teams of often several hundred horse-riders fight with spears.
The largest town on the island is the main port of Waingapu, with a population of about 52,755. The landscape is low, limestone hills, rather than the steep volcanoes of many Indonesian islands. There is a dry season from May to November and a rainy season from December to April. The western side of the island is more fertile and more heavily populated than the east.
Due to its distinctive flora and fauna Sumba has been categorised by the World Wildlife Fund as the Sumba deciduous forests ecoregion. Although generally thought to be originally part of the Gondwana southern hemisphere supercontinent, recent research suggests that it might have detached from the South East Asia margin. Sumba is within the Wallacea ecozone, having a mixture of plants and animals of Asian and Australasian origin. Most of the island was originally covered in deciduous monsoon forest while the south-facing slopes, which remain moist during the dry season, were evergreen rainforest.

This ±1,7 hectare land boasts an breathtaking view on the Indian Ocean. The land is set on ±1,7 hectares located in Gaura, south-west Sumba, not far from the world famous 5 star Nihiwatu eco-resort.
There is a direct access road to the land: government road then private road agreed upon in the certificate.
Electricity was non-existent in most areas until recently. Power cables are now being installed along some of the roads not far from the land. An electricity cable could be pulled from the power line from the main road to the land.
The water situation is the same as everywhere in Sumba. Water can be bought by cubic tonnes and brought to the land by trucks. The alternative would be to dig a well. Wells are very common now in Sumba as some companies are already there with the proper equipment to dig. Water can be found very easiy in the ground just about anywhere on the west part of the island.
Type of land: cliff
Location of the land: Gaura, south-west Sumba
Distance from the land to Tambolaka airport: around 2 hours
Land size: ±1,7 hectares (17,080m2)
Oceanfront length: ±142 meters long
Land Title: freehold (hak milik). Certificate is already issued.
General informations:
Sumba is an island in eastern Indonesia, is one of the Lesser Sunda Islands, and is in the province of East Nusa Tenggara.
Sumba Culture:
The Sumbanese people speak a variety of closely related Austronesian languages, and have a mixture of Austronesian and Melanesian ancestry. The largest language group is the Kambera language, spoken by a quarter of a million people in the eastern half of Sumba. Twenty- five to thirty percent of the population practises the animist Marapu religion. The remainder are Christian, a majority being dutch Calvinist, but a substantial minority being Roman Catholic. A small number of Sunni Muslims can be found along the coastal areas. The largest town on the island is the main port of Waingapu, with a population of about 52,755. The landscape is low, limestone hills, rather than the steep volcanoes of many Indonesian islands. There is a dry season from May to November and a rainy season from december to April. There are a number of mammals but the island is particularly rich in birdlife with nearly 200 birds, of which seven endemic species and a number of others are found only here and on some nearby islands. The endemic birds include four vulnerable species: the secretive Sumba Boobook owl, Sumba Buttonquail, Red-naped Fruit-dove and Sumba Hornbill as well as three more common species: the Sumba Green Pigeon, Sumba Flycatcher, and Apricot-breasted Sunbird.

LEAD IN:
Advances in drugs and treatment mean leprosy has all but been wiped out in large sections of the world, but for some the suffering goes on.
Specialist medical teams are being dispatched to areas, such as Oecusse - a small enclave in East Timor - one of the final frontiers in the battle against this devastating and debilitating disease.
STORYLINE :
Here in the remote mountainside, Adelino Quelo ekes out a painful existence living in a tiny ramshackle hut.
This is one of the last outposts of leprosy and Quelo's body has been ravaged by the disease.
He's 68, but looks much older.
His fingers, toes and parts of his hands and feet are missing.
Only stubby knobs remain and they stop him from standing, gripping objects, or even bathing himself.
Although he always has a smile for his rare visitors, Quelo's life is a desperate struggle.
Medical teams that visit here have declared war on the age-old disease and this is one of the last frontiers for them to conquer.
The disease has nearly been eliminated worldwide.
But for Quelo help has come far too late.
"I've been suffering from this (leprosy) for long time," he says movingly. "And it's enough."
His only hope now is that others don't suffer the way he has.
A lush little enclave, Oecusse, is cut off from the rest of East Timor by the Savu Sea.
Indonesia is close by and during the brutal fight for independence many of the people here were massacred.
Little monuments to them are peppered around, but leprosy is their enemy now.

EAST TIMOR: WOUNDED REBELS ARE HELD IN HOSPITAL

Eng/Indonesian
East Timorese activists based in Australia say 12 more people have been killed and over 200 arrested in the Timorese town of Baucau this week, following rebel attacks on Indonesian troops.
The crackdown appears to be part of a major security sweep on the island following unrest triggered by the Indonesian elections.
Road blocks have sprung up in the capital, Dili, and foreign reporters and camera crews thrown out.
Despite the security clampdown, an APTV camera crew has obtained rare and exclusive footage of wounded rebels under detention in East Timor.
In Hera - on the surface an idyllic Timorese fishing village on the Savu Sea - people carve out a meagre existence from the ocean.
They are following in the steps of generations before them, even before the Portuguese colonisers arrived 500 years ago.
Wearing the yellow T-shirts of their present day political masters, Indonesia's ruling party Golkar, the Timorese go about their daily chores of repairing fishing nets and weaving traditional Timorese "Tais" cloth.
It is not so much a display of political support - the T-shirts were given to them for free.
In recent nights, however, the village has echoed to the sounds of gunfire and military helicopters.
Fretilin - a small band of rebels who have been fighting for independence since Indonesia invaded the former Portuguese colony in 1975 - has stepped up its campaign against the military.
Six gun battles in six days have reportedly claimed the lives of over 40 policemen, soldiers, civilians and rebels - the worst violence in East Timor for years.
Before this latest wave of attacks, army intelligence claimed there were only 80 poorly equipped Fretilin rebels hiding out in the territory.
Indonesian army sources said the isolated bands of guerrillas were unable to inflict any significant damage to Jakarta's military might.
Although over the years their numbers have dwindled -- leaders have been captured and foot soldiers shot and imprisoned -- the rebels now claim to have 800 armed volunteers.
Under armed guard at Dili's main military hospital, three Fretilin rebels - allegedly shot and captured in one of the latest attacks - lie handcuffed to their beds.
According to the Indonesian military, these men were part of a small band of rebels who led a daring attack on a Dili police station on the eve of Indonesia's general elections last week.
During the attack, the rebels allegedly stabbed and shot security personnel before taking off for the hills.
Four of their comrades were said to have been killed by security forces.
Military authorities say these prisoners receive exactly the same treatment as their own wounded soldiers.
When fit enough to leave hospital, however, these men will be handed to the police, charged and tried.
They can expect heavy sentences.
When the military cracks down in East Timor and rounds up any one suspected of supporting the rebels, it is the International Red Cross that takes the role of mediator between the security forces and the families of those detained.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Our visits are aimed at looking at the material and the psychological conditions, the treatment of detainees. We are, after such a visit, reporting directly to the authorities in confidential reports to try - if there is a need - to try to change, improve things. And like that we try to contribute to a humane treatment of the prisoners."

Indonesia's military has long been accused of serious human rights abuses in East Timor.
But in the sanctuary of a small church, a young Timorese man disputes the Major- General's claims that the so-called mistakes are all in the past..

wn.com/East Timor Wounded Rebels Are Held In Hospital
