The Yazidi (also Yezidi, Kurdish: ئێزیدی or Êzidî) are a Kurdish ethnoreligious group with Indo-Iranian roots. They currently live primarily in the Nineveh Province of northern Iraq. Additional communities in Transcaucasia, Armenia, Turkey, and Syria have been in decline since the 1990s, their members having emigrated to Europe, especially to Germany. Their religion, Yazidism, is a branch of Yazdânism, and is seen as a highly syncretic complex of local Kurdish beliefs that contains Zoroastrian elements and Islamic Sufi doctrine introduced to the area by Sheikh Adi ibn Musafir in the 12th century. The Yazidi believe in God as creator of the world, which he placed under the care of seven holy beings or angels, the chief of whom is Melek Taus, the Peacock Angel.
Historically, the Yazidi lived primarily in communities in what are now Iraq, Syria, and Turkey, and also had significant numbers in Armenia and Georgia. However, events since the 20th century have resulted in considerable demographic shift in these areas as well as mass emigration. As a result population estimates are unclear in many regions, and estimates of the size of the total population vary.

Last summer 7000 Yazidis were kidnapped by Islamic State. Women and girls were abducted, imprisoned and sold into slavery. Eight months on, several survivors speak openly about their traumatic experience.
Nineteen-year-old Hakimeh was captured in Kucho and held prisoner for three months: "They sold us among themselves, they treated us very badly, beating us, making us do all sorts of things by force." Made to convert to Islam, Yazidi women were bought and sold by jihadists. Jalileh, aged 30, was taken to Syria and ordered to look after the youngest girls. "If the girl refused to do what they wanted, they would break her arm or crack her skull. Then they would return her. And after she got better, another man took her", she describes. In the northern Iraqi village of Lalish that remains holy to Yazidis, many women who have managed to escape take sanctuary. But the babies of women raped by Islamic State fighters are not welcome. "After the baby is born in hospital, it will be handed to the authorities. And the authorities will decide what to do with it", Yazidi religious leader Baba Chaowish explains. Hakimeh describes her situation, unfortunately a highly familiar one to so many Yazidis: "My mother and father and brothers and their children are lost... We don't know if they are dead or alive."

Members of Iraq’s Yazidis sect follow an ancient religion, which incorporates elements of Islam and indigenous beliefs. After the Islamic State overran parts of northern Iraq, tens of thousands of Yazidis were forced into the Sinjar mountain range, where Islamic State militants — who consider the Yazidi devil worshippers — surrounded them.
President Obama claimed on August 14 that the US military intervention in Iraq broke the siege of the trapped Yazidi civilians in the Sinjar mountains. But the Yazidi themselves disagree. Instead, they are adamant that they owe their rescue from the surrounding Islamic State militants to the Syrian Kurdish fighters of the People's Protection Units (YPG). The YPG has been fighting the Islamic State longer and harder than any other group in Syria, and pushed a narrow escape route deep through Islamic State territory to rescue the Yazidis.
VICE News travelled through the desert corridor to ascertain the true story of the Yazidis’ last minute escape from the Islamic State.

The death tool could rise to 3000, there are still more than 30,000 Yazidis stranded on the Sinjar mountains, and more than 100,000 Christians fled their homes and are not refugees in Kurdistan, many taking shelters in Church and other public places in the city of Erbil and Sulaymaniyah.

The death tool could rise to 3000, there are still more than 30,000 Yazidis stranded on the Sinjar mountains, and more than 100,000 Christians fled their homes and are not refugees in Kurdistan, many taking shelters in Church and other public places in the city of Erbil and Sulaymaniyah.

At least 150 Yazidi women and girls killed themselves after they were forced to become Islamic State sex slaves, according to a woman working with some of the survivors who managed to escape. In one of the most comprehensive accounts of the effects of Islamic State brutality, details emerged of the ordeals faced by hundreds of Yazidi women, very often after their male relatives were butchered by Islamic State members. Irifan Mahdi, who is trying to help the women rehabilitate into some semblance of normative society spoke of the horrors in an interview with the Sputnik news organization’s Arabic website. Irifan Mahdi, who is trying to help the women rehabilitate into some semblance of normative society spoke of the horrors in an interview with the Sputnik news organization’s Arabic website.
She told the story of Jilan Barjess-Naif, 17, “a beautiful green-eyed girl, with rare blonde hair, who slashed her own wrists in a public bathhouse near Mosul, northern Iraq, which is under Islamic State control.”
She was separated from the less attractive girls and singled out for special rape treatment before being put up for sale in a sex market.
After she committed suicide, Islamic State members threw her body from the bathhouse into the nearest garbage dumpster.
Jilan’s sister, Jihan, committed suicide a few days after being captured and transferred, along with other girls, to A-Raqqa, the Islamic State’s capital, in order to be sold at a slave market.
Their pregnant mother, also captured, gave birth to a child in a cave. She was freed recently and returned home “as a mad woman” after the suicides of her daughters.
As if all of this was not enough, Islamic State executed six of Jilan and Jihan’s siblings and their father and arrested 20 other members of the family. The whereabouts of some are still unknown.
The fate of the Barjess-Naif family from Qar-Aziz in the Sinjar region of Iraq is by no means unique, according to Majid.
Mahdi said she knows of 150 Yazidis who committed suicide and believes the real figure is considerably higher.
“They preferred to die than to live in brutal sexual slavery and violence by organization members,” she said.
