Teacher Wayne Lampe has this disease.
A.L.S. stands for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or sometimes called Lou Gehrig's disease. It is a neurorological disorder that attacks the motor neurons that enable communication between the brain and control of a person's voluntary muscles. No one knows the cause of ALS. There are many researchers with different theories. There is no cure. In 50% of people the average life span is 3-5 years after diagnosis. Only 8% live over 10 years and there is even a question on quality of life for many are on permanent ventilation. No two cases are alike. Progression can be rapid, and then it can level off, and then start again.I will use an example with something almost common to everyone these days, a cell phone. When you have a good connection, you can speak and hear the other person clear from coast to coast. You can do this because of the network of towers across the nation. With A.L.S., the motor neurons are the towers. They stop receiving signals and they control the muscles. The body still finds way to get through to muscles but it is delayed. It is like calling from Florida to California, but by way of New York, Chicago, Denver then Los Angeles. People cannot live without water and muscles cannot not live without communication. Once the motor neuron that controls a muscle group stops receiving messages, the muscles in that area die. It is like you experience bad spots with your phone.

(ALS)
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis(ALS)
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is a progressive neurodegenerative disease, in which the motor neurons of the nervous system gradually degenerates and after some time, they eventually die.
Irrespective of background, ethnicity and race, anyone can fall victim to this condition. ALS is also called Lou Gehrig’s disease, after a well known baseball player, who died from the disease.
It is one of the most common neuromuscular diseases today.
A motor neuron is a type of nerve cell which can be found in the spinal cord, brain and the brainstem. Motor neurons provide a connection between the voluntary muscles of the body and the nervous system. For instance during writing, the upper motor neurons which are in the brain send a message to the lower neurons, the one in the spinal cord, that you want to write. The lower motor neurons then send a message to the voluntary muscles that are required for the act of writing, for example: hands and arms.
In case of ALS, these motor neurons get affected and cannot function properly and so the messages cannot be initiated or transferred to the muscles. This means that movement will not be supported in the muscles. This leads to the weakness of the muscles in the body. They also get thinner and have fine twitches. As the condition reaches its later stages, more and more motor neurons are damaged and more and more voluntary muscles fail to function, due to which the affected individual become unable to move their limbs and body. Eventually, it leads to complete paralysis.
Failure of the muscles of diaphragm and the chest wall means that the person is no longer able to breath voluntarily, hence, the majority of ALS victims die due to respiratory failure in about 3-5 years after the appearance of the symptoms.
In ALS the affected individual loses the ability to move the voluntary muscles but they may still have control over the movements of the bladder, bowel and eyes to some degree. Also, this medical condition does not affect the senses of touch, smell, hearing and taste.
