Hi, I'm Mandy Wilson. I work for the Peccoud Lab at Virginia Bioinformatics Institute at Virginia Tech, and I'm here to talk to you about Synthetic Biology Open Language. Synthetic biology open language (also known as SBOL) is a community effort to come up with a common form of communication between different synthetic biology applications. SBOL has been developed and maintained by volunteers from all over the world. Participants in this community effort come from universities like University of Washington, Virginia Tech, Newcastle University in England, as well as industry contributors such as Agilent, DNA 2.0, and others. The idea behind SBOL developed from a need for a common mark-up language, which can be used to communicate between various applications. Let's say you have a collaboration between industry and academia, or even between two academic institutions, where they're working on a common effort but using different proprietary tools. For example, let's say that someone from Newcastle University publishes a paper about a new E.Coli mutation, and someone else at Virginia Tech wants to replicate that work for further investigation. Without a common language for sharing that information, it would be very difficult for the scientist at Virginia Tech to load that sequence -- with all its annotations -- into her own software for further analysis. Synthetic Biology Open Language helps address this issue. Thank you for listening to me talk about Synthetic Biology Open Language. If you're interested in getting more information, I recommend you check out their website at http://www.sbolstandard.org/

Support the Artist-Activa Since 2004, Rob ‘Activa’ Stevenson has forged a career as one of the hardest working producers in the trance genre, with a number of alias’ and styles, releasing on the biggest labels in the world including Paul van Dyk’s mighty Vandit Records, Black Hole, Armada and Anjunabeats, before finding a home at UK independent, Discover Records where he released the critically acclaimed album, This World in 2009 and its follow up, To The Point in 2011. A continuous string of high profile releases has seen constant support from the trance DJ elite, in their live sets as well as worldwide radio shows, podcasts and Essential Mixes; A State of Trance, Gareth Emery Podcast and VONYC Sessions to name but a few. As a DJ, Activa has performed the length and breadth of the UK and at the biggest trance events in the world. The likes of Tomorrowland in Belgium, Paul van Dyk’s Birthday for Vandit in Berlin, Flight in South Africa, Home in Sydney, Circus in LA and Intuition in Holland as well as Godskitchen, Gatecrasher and Digital Society have all seen Activa behind the decks to provide his unique blend of energetic, uplifting trance music. If a successful DJ and production career wasn’t enough, Activa also owns and runs Borderline Music, a label started in 2010 to showcase a more unique and higher quality style of trance music, bringing back the likes of JK Walker and Marcos and pushing the careers of new talent in the form of Sonic Element and Impulsive Drive. This success as a label owner and the close relationship between Activa and his home label, Discover, meant that he jumped at the chance to work as head of A&R;, filling the very large shoes of John Askew, taking over the reigns at Discover in February 2011. http://www.soundcloud.com/activa http://www.activamusic.co.uk/

Many of those with severe speech disorders use a computerized device to communicate. Yet they choose between only a few voice options. That's why Stephen Hawking has an American accent, and why many people end up with the same voice, often to incongruous effect. Speech scientist Rupal Patel wanted to do something about this, and in this wonderful talk she shares her work to engineer unique voices for the voiceless. Here's another demo of ForeFlights Synthetic Vision going into Grand Junction, Colorado at night down to minimums. This really shows the synthetic vision in action while dropping below 1000 feet AGL. Sorry for the incorrect language as I call the approach lights the ILS plus the off center landing. It's hard to hold an iPhone on your iPad while landing. This is done on a simulator - there is a slight lag on the iPad since the GPS is coming through the network. This doesn't occur in real flight.

An amusing introduction to radar remote sensing from satellites, with the concept of "range Doppler" image formation described using entertaining audio-video animations. The video finishes with a tongue-in-cheek "demonstration" of one satellite's ability to locate points on the ground. Animations were created mainly by Adrian Schubert, except satellite+Earth backgrounds thanks to the German Aerospace Center (DLR). Oblique-view Earth animations made using Google Earth. Video effects and other animations made using Adobe After Effects, Photoshop and Premiere. See end credits for complete list of references to the media clips used.

http://www.nutricargo.com/maral-extract-41-powdered-extract?language=en¤cy;=USD Rhaponticum carthamoides - A Powerful Natural Anabolic Back in the '70s, the Soviet sports teams were caught using numerous steroids. In 1976 Soviet scientists discovered two substances that had traditional historical use behind them. One was a plant called Rhaponticum carthamoides, the active ingredient of which is called beta-ecdysterone. The Soviets manufactured a synthetic version of this powerful substance for their athletes with great success. Soon after, the U.S. version called Mesobolin circulated on the underground market for a long time. In back-to-back studies with animals, the Rhaponticum extract was actually superior to synthetic steroids like Dianabol at inducing endurance and muscle cell growth (Syrov et al. 1976, 1992). The examination of the difference in action between beta-ecdysterone and synthetic steroids revealed that the latter go directly to the nucleus of a cell to tell the blueprint, the DNA, to produce more RNA. Then the RNA tells the ribosome to produce more protein. Beta-ecdysterone, on the other hand, goes directly to the ribosome and increases what is called translation, the rate at which new protein is being made (Syrov et al. 1984). 3 It does not increase transcription, the message sent from the DNA; it accelerates translation, or direct protein synthesis (Syrov et al. 1984). Levseins doubles the rate of translation and is very safe. Aside from increasing the rate of muscle growth, this same plant sterol strengthens kidney and liver function and is an enormous boon to people with dysfunctions in these particular areas, the opposite of the effects of synthetic steroids, which can lead to both kidney and liver damage.

noodls 2014-11-17In linguistic typology, a synthetic language is a language with a high morpheme-per-word ratio, as opposed to a low morpheme-per-word ratio in what is described as an isolating language. This linguistic classification is largely independent of morpheme-usage classifications (such as fusional, agglutinative, etc.), although there is a common tendency for agglutinative languages to exhibit synthetic properties.
Synthetic languages are frequently contrasted with isolating languages. It is more accurate to conceive of languages as existing on a continuum, with strictly isolating (consistently one morpheme per word) at one end and highly polysynthetic (in which a single word may contain as much information as an entire English sentence) at the other extreme. Synthetic languages tend to lie around the middle of this scale.
Synthetic languages are numerous and well-attested, the most commonly cited being Indo-European languages such as Sanskrit, Spanish, Persian, Armenian, Greek, Latin, Lithuanian, German, Italian, French, Romanian, Russian, Ukrainian, Polish, Slovak and Czech, as well as many languages of the Americas, including Navajo, Nahuatl, Mohawk and Quechua. Synthetic languages are identified also in Kartvelian languages, for example the Georgian language.
