A brief history of African-American literature and criticism is undertaken, and the relationship of both to feminist theory is explicated. The problems in cultural and identity studies of essentialism, "the identity queue," expropriation, and biology are surveyed, with particular attention paid to the work of Michael Cooke and Morrison's reading of Huckleberry Finn. Noah spent his early youth in the private school of Maryvale College, a Catholic school in Johannesburg. His father later moved back to Switzerland and Noah was raised by his mother and maternal grandmother, Nomalizo Frances Noah. During his childhood, he attended church every Sunday.
He has two younger half-brothers by his mother's husband, Ngisaveni Shingange, whom she later divorced. In 2009, after she became engaged to another man,Shingange shot her in the back and face; he was unable to continue shooting as the gun jammed. He later threatened to kill Trevor Noah.In 2011, Shingange was convicted of attempted murder. Noah stated that he hoped the attention surrounding the incident would help the domestic abuse problem in South Africa: "For years my mother reached out to police for help with domestic abuse, and nothing was ever done. This is the norm in South Africa. Dockets went missing and cases never went to court. In 2012, Shingange was sentenced to three years of correctional supervision for the attempted murder.
His mixed-race heritage, his experiences growing up in a Soweto township, and his observations about race and ethnicity are leading themes in his comedy.

Introduction to Theory of Literature (ENGL 300)
In this lecture, Professor Paul Fry examines trends in African-American criticism through the lens of Henry Louis Gates, Jr. and Toni Morrison. At the lecture's conclusion, the tense relationship between African-American studies and New Critical assumptions are explored with reference to Robert Penn Warren's poem, "Pondy Woods."

In 2013, Raven-Symoné, star of That's So Raven, sent out a tweet in support of gay marriage that caused a sensation. "I can finally get married! Yay government! So proud of you," the tweet read. Was this Raven's way of publicly coming out?
"That was my way of saying I'm proud of the country," Raven says. "But I will say that I'm in an amazing, happy relationship with my partner, a woman."
While Raven is happy to admit she is in love, she prefers to keep her personal life private. "I don't want to be labeled as gay," she says. "I want to be labeled as a human who loves humans. I'm tired of being labeled. I'm an American. I'm not an African-American, I'm an American."
"Oh girl, don't set the Twitter on fire," Oprah says. "You are going to get a lot of flack for saying you're not African-American. You know that, right?"
Watch Raven go on to explain exactly what she means and why she's proud of "who I am and what I am."

The Voodoo Macbeth is a common nickname for the Federal Theatre Project's 1936 New York production of William Shakespeare's Macbeth, featuring an all-African American cast directed by Orson Welles. The production relocated the setting of the play from Scotland to a fictional Caribbean island based on Haiti, and acquired its nickname due to its use of voodoo imagery in place of the witchcraft in the original play. n this multimedia feature, Neal A. Lester foregrounds his work in English and literature, reflecting on what it means to be a Black man in the academy and his experience navigating his identity in terms of research, service, and teaching. The video interview features Lester discussing his personal discovery of his passion for African American literature as well as the intricacies of navigating his identity as a scholar who is both Black and male in areas of scholarship typically led by Black women. Lester delves deeply into the emergence (and absence) of African Americans in children’s literature; how the values, beliefs, and norms of adults are reflected in children’s literature and illustrations; and the impact of Black children’s literature on identity development for Black boys and girls.
