The Battle of Bassorah (also known as the Battle of the Camel or Battle of Jamal) was a battle that took place at Basra, Iraq in 656 between forces allied to Ali ibn Abi Talib (Muhammad's cousin and son-in-law, Commander of the Faithful) and forces allied to Aisha (widow of Muhammad, and Mother of the Believers (Arabic: Umm-al-Mu'mineen)), who wanted justice on the perpetrators of the assassination of the previous caliph, Uthman.
Abu Bakr's reign was short, and in 634 CE he was succeeded by Umar as caliph. Assassination ended Umar's reign of ten years, and he was succeeded by Uthman Ibn Affan in 644 CE. Both of these men had been among Muhammad's earliest followers, were linked to him by clanship and marriage, and had taken prominent parts in various military campaigns.
Dissatisfaction and resistance had openly risen since 650-651 (30 AH) throughout most of the empire. The dissatisfaction with his regime and the governments he appointed was not restricted to the provinces outside Arabia. When Uthman's kin, especially Marwan, gained control over him, Uthman lost control over his Caliphate, and many of the noble companions, including most of the members of the elector council, withdrew their support.

STORYLINE:
British Royal Marines entered the southern Basra neighbourhood of Abu al Khasib after 15 hours of fighting overnight from Sunday to Monday.
In their biggest offensive so far in Iraq, 600 Royal Marines from 40 Commando took up a "consolidation position" before an expected push towards the Shatt-al-Arab waterway on Monday.
The British say an Iraqi force was trapped when a group of British Marines also moved into an area to the east of Abu al Khasib.
Iraqi defenders in bunker positions fired on the marines during the operation which began at 0200 GMT.
The British named the mission "Operation James" after the fictional spy character James Bond.
It also involved a back up force of two tank squadrons and commando-trained Royal Engineers.
The British say several hundred soldiers in three rifle companies advanced on foot at dawn towards the Shatt-al-Arab waterway.
Throughout Monday morning, plumes of dark smoke rose from wrecked and burning Iraqi tanks, buildings and the landscape were pock-marked with the evidence of the prior night's fire-fight.
By Monday afternoon British guns on the front line north west of Basra were firing repeatedly.
The British army said that during Monday it had destroyed 25 Iraqi tanks, 12 gun positions, armoured cars and Iraqi infantry.
It was also moving up larger 155mm mobile guns with a range of 25 kilometres (15 miles)
The British military said its plan was to keep 3 Iraqi army divisions to the north of Basra out of the region.

At least 40 people have been killed in two days of fighting in the southern Iraqi city of Basra, an Iraqi military spokesman said on Wednesday.
More than 200 have been wounded, according to an Iraqi Colonel.
He did not say how many were militiamen, Iraqi soldiers, or civilians caught up in the fighting.
The streets in Basra were near empty on Wednesday morning, a day after Iraqi soldiers and police fought Mahdi Army militiamen in at least four strategic neighbourhoods.
A single ambulance was the only sign of activity.
Throughout Tuesday, the sounds of explosions and machine gunfire echoed through the streets.
British troops remained at their base at the airport outside the city and were not involved in Tuesday's ground fighting, according to the British Ministry of Defence.
Air support was being provided, but a spokesman would not say if it was US or British planes.
Basra, near the Iranian border about 340 miles (547 kilometres) southeast of Baghdad, is the centre of Iraq's vast oil industry.
Stability there is essential if Iraq is to attract the huge investments needed to restore its neglected oil fields and export facilities.
Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has taken personal charge of the effort to rid Basra of militias, some of whom have ties to nearby Iran.
Followers of Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr have been fighting US and Iraqi forces in Baghdad and other cities in reaction to
the Basra crackdown.
Officials say at least 55 people have died in the fighting in Basra and Baghdad with some 300 wounded.
Shiite militiamen loyal to al-Sadr on Tuesday also unleashed rockets on the US-protected Green Zone in Baghdad.
The burgeoning crisis represents the gravest challenge to the Iraqi government in months.
The clashes - part of an intense power struggle among Shiite political factions - has major implications for the United States.
An escalation could unravel the cease-fire which al-Sadr proclaimed last August. A resumption of fighting by his militia
could kill more US and Iraqi soldiers and threaten, at least in the short term, the security gains that Washington has trumpeted as a sign that Iraq was on the road to recovery.
The confrontation will also test the skill and resolve of Iraq's Shiite-led government in dealing with Shiite militias, with whom the national leadership had maintained close ties.
