Purpose built as Australia’s capital city, Canberra is a 3-hour drive from both the snowy mountains and the beautiful beaches of New South Wales. It is a city which honors Australia’s past and shapes its future.
With an expansive bush beauty, a relaxed attitude and colorful events, Canberra is far more than a political capital. Designed for a young nation that was just finding its feet, this city is home to many of the country's most important stories; stories that have come to define what it means to be Australian.
At the heart of Canberra’s creation story is Lake Burley Griffin. A long-standing rivalry between Sydney and Melbourne meant that neither one could be the nation’s capital. Instead, in 1911, the government launched an international design competition seeking a master plan for a brand new city.
The victor, Chicago architect Walter Burley Griffin, won with a garden city design focused on a man-made lake which fits perfectly within the landscape.
When, the nation’s Governor General stood in a dusty paddock in 1913 and announced the name of the new capital, he told the nation that the city had, lying before it, a splendid destiny.
Over 100 years later, that destiny has been fulfilled in a city that preserves the great chapters of Australia’s history and continues to write the future pages of the nation’s story.

At 9:22am on the 05th February 2015 (Time stamp is wrong) I was riding to work and approached the intersection on Hindmarsh drive while exiting the Tuggeranong Parkway south bound. I intended to turn left onto Hindmarsh Drive into the centre lane as advised by the clear signage approaching the intersection. As I approached the intersection the lights were green. Just before the intersection the lights turned orange. I had enough time to stop, however as there was a white Corolla close behind me I decided to proceed through the intersection. The Corolla had more than enough warning/time to stop. I did cut the intersection a little but this was to avoid slowing quickly or cornering to hard. As I was cornering the white Corolla behind me decided to come up beside me and turn with me, he was actually in my lane, his front bumper was 10cm off my rear tyre. As I completed my turn into the centre lane of Hindmarsh Drive he quickly went into the right lane. This move is illegal. As the Corolla came up beside me I beeped my horn and gave the driver a shrugged hand gesture as if to ask ‘What were you thinking?’ At this point I was happy to let it go and continue on my way. I continued down Hindmarsh drive and indicated my intention to move into the right lane. The Corolla was a car length behind in the right lane. As I moved across the Corolla came speeding up behind me and proceed to try and pass me on the right within approx. 20cm of me while beeping aggressively. If I not decided to take the left hand line on that lane but proceed to the centre of the lane I would have collided with him. He braked and moved in behind me all the while aggressively on his horn. His later excuse was that I cut him off, but as you can see he was clearly behind me. He also started beeping before I even moved over. As we approached the intersection of Melrose Drive the Corolla driver then moved partially into the centre lane while still beeping aggressively and coming up beside me again. I decided to stop at the intersection beside him and ask him why he was being so aggressive. At this point I got a little cranky at his lack of care and I folded his mirror back. No damage was caused to the mirror or the car as can been seen in the video. After this incident while waiting further ahead at the lights the driver kept grinning at me with this smarmy arrogant grin. He then pulled out his phone and sent a text, after that he started giving me the finger while kissing and licking his finger. This really got me fired up. I truly believe he is psychopathic and it demonstrates he really didn’t care that he was using car as a weapon. If I had my I would like to see him charged with attempted assault with a weapon but I know that will never happen. So now completely fired up at this maniac I decided to follow him to his destination to ask about his driving attitude. As can be seen in the video at 6:55 , as the driver turned left onto Culogoa Circuit from Tyagarah St he failed to indicate left. He then failed to indicate again turning left onto Dalman Cres and again onto Tinbarra Cres. He then pulled into the ‘IN’ driveway of the High Commission for the republic of Pakistan. I decided to follow him in but he then suddenly puts the car in reverse and reverses at me before I can even move. I manage back up a little and turns out my way but it was still close. He then gets out of the car and completely blames me and accuses me of driving erratically and speeding. Watch the video and decide for yourself. It’s also a very poor excuse for trying to knock me off my bike. It also demonstrates how psycho this person is that he thinks it’s an excuse for deliberately driving a 1.5 ton car at 180kg bike. He is in big metal cage, I have a jacket to protect me. The man is mental if thinks there is any excuse in the world for his actions.
Please leave your comment about the incident and let me know if you think I was at fault. I admit I was aggressive and could have handled the situation better. However please remember that I had just had a very close encounter with complete psychopath so my adrenalin was pumping and I reacted quickly, I couldn't even get my left & rights straight.

Canberra, according to the OECD, is officially the best city in the world.
The Australian Capital Territory has topped Paris, London and New York, as well as Melbourne, Sydney, Perth and Brisbane in the OECD Regional Wellbeing study results released on Monday.
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development looked at nine measures of “wellbeing” including education, jobs, environment and income. Australia topped the countries list.
Canberra is the capital city of Australia. With a population of 381,488, it is Australia's largest inland city and the eighth-largest city overall. The city is located at the northern end of theAustralian Capital Territory (ACT), 280 km (170 mi) south-west of Sydney, and 660 km (410 mi) north-east of Melbourne. A resident of Canberra is known as a "Canberran".
The site of Canberra was selected for the location of the nation's capital in 1908 as a compromise between rivals Sydney and Melbourne, Australia's two largest cities. It is unusual among Australian cities, being an entirely planned city outside of any state, similar to the American Federal District of Columbia. Following an international contest for the city's design, a blueprint by the Chicago architects Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin was selected and construction commenced in 1913.[5] The Griffins' plan featured geometric motifs such as circles, hexagons and triangles, and was centred on axes aligned with significant topographical landmarks in the Australian Capital Territory.
The city's design was influenced by the garden city movement and incorporates significant areas of natural vegetation that have earned Canberra the title of the "bush capital". The growth and development of Canberra were hindered by the World Wars and the Great Depression, which exacerbated a series of planning disputes and the ineffectiveness of a procession of bodies that were created in turn to oversee the development of the city. The national capital emerged as a thriving city after World War II, as Prime Minister Robert Menzies championed its development and the National Capital Development Commission was formed with executive powers. Although the Australian Capital Territory is now self-governing, the federal government retains some influence through the National Capital Authority.
As the seat of the government of Australia, Canberra is the site of Parliament House, the High Court and numerous government departments and agencies. It is also the location of many social and cultural institutions of national significance, such as the Australian War Memorial, Australian National University, Australian Institute of Sport, National Gallery, National Museum and the National Library. The Australian Army's officer corps are trained at the Royal Military College, Duntroon and the Australian Defence Force Academy is also located in the capital.
The ACT, like Washington, D.C. in the United States, is independent of any state, to prevent any one state from gaining an advantage by hosting the seat of Federal power. Unlike Washington, however, the ACT has voting representation in the Federal Parliament, and has its own independent Legislative Assembly and government, similar to the states.
As the city has a high proportion of public servants, the federal government contributes the largest percentage of Gross State Product and is the largest single employer in Canberra. As the seat of government, the unemployment rate is lower and the average income higher than the national average, while property prices are relatively high, in part due to comparatively restricted development regulations. Tertiary education levels are higher, while the population is younger.

Queensland is proudly known as the sunshine state of Australia, and any time of year makes a good time to visit Brisbane (often called Brizzy by locals). Brisbane sightseeing is marked by parks, coastline, gardens, and more. Whether you want to play in the water or partake in some epic shopping, this Australian city welcomes you.
Start your Brisbane tour with a stop at Mount Coot-tha. The name of this mountain peak is derived from the Maori word for honey, which was once found in abundance here. While you’re at Mount Coot-tha, explore the stars of the Southern Hemisphere at the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium. Next, visit a laughing kookaburra at Brisbane Botanical Gardens.
Don’t forget about the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, where you can visit koalas, kangaroos, and other local animals. Once you’re ready to commune with humans again, head to Queen Street Mall for the heart of Brisbane’s shopping. The South Bank is rich with free activities, markets, and a lagoon where you can cool off.
Spare some time to take the public ferry to Newfoundland Park, where you can visit the restored Brisbane Powerhouse, filled with art installations. To end your day, climb the Story Bridge, an ideal spot to watch the sun set over the city. Don’t worry, Brisbane tourism includes many fine and casual dining options.

Come to Dubai, the ancient City of Gold, for your next vacation.
Modernity and antiquity collide in this vibrant city. Shop at the same spice market locals have been visiting for generations, then visit the stores in the Gold Souk, a jewelry-centered traditional marketplace. For a more modern shopping experience, go to the Dubai Mall, home to over 1200 stores, an underwater zoo, and KidZania®, a “city” where children can roleplay various careers.
To soak up some of the legendary Dubai sunshine, simply step outside. Take in the view of the city from the observation deck of the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. Continue your Dubai tour by wandering through the exotic buildings and resorts, or visit some of the public beaches. If you’d like to try something a little different and don’t mind paying a small fee, you can also attend local hotel beaches even if you aren’t staying there.
You can’t finish your Dubai sightseeing without a trip into the desert itself. Ride a camel, go sandboarding, or just stand out on the dunes and marvel at the beauty of it all.

Darwin is the capital of the Northern Territory, in the “top end” of Australia.
Traditionally the home of the Larrakia People, Darwin was settled by Europeans in 1869. The city’s isolation has meant that its population has always been low, which is just the way its laid-back residents like it.
On Thursdays and Sundays, locals and visitors head to the Mindil Beach Markets to shop, dance and enjoy foods from all over the world. At sunset, head down to the beach as the sun dips into the Arafura Sea, then catch a movie under the stars at the Deck Chair Cinema.
Learn about the city’s military history, at the Defense of Darwin Experience and the Australian Aviation Heritage Centre. At the Darwin Museum and Art Gallery, discover the region’s local cultures and unique natural environment.
To experience the Northern Territory’s most fearsome residents, pay a visit to Crocodylus Park and Crocosaurus Cove, home to some of the largest captive saltwater crocodiles on the planet.
There are over 20 national parks in the Darwin region, including popular Litchfield National Park. Just an hour and a half from Darwin, Litchfield is set around a sandstone plateau, crisscrossed by deep, narrow gorges filled with monsoon forests, waterfalls and croc-free swimming holes.
Kakadu National Park is a three-hour drive from Darwin. Half the size of Switzerland and home to one-third of Australia’s bird species and some of the world’s oldest rock art, Kakadu is more than a national park, it’s a national treasure.

In its graceful setting, Canberra uniquely sums up the character of Australia and Australians as the nation's capital. This program was originally intended to provide information to public servants transferring to Canberra. The intended use changed several times and some reshooting/reediting occurred before its release in 1958. You can see what is now the NFSA building at 09:58 which was then the Institute of Anatomy. Made by the Commonwealth Film Unit 1958. Directed by Colin Dean.
