Shankar (Tamil: ஷங்கர்; born 17 August 1963) is an Indian film director and producer who predominantly works in Tamil cinema. He made his directional debut in Gentleman (1993) for which he was awarded the Filmfare Best Director Award. He is the highest paid film-maker in India among his contemporaries.
Two of his films, Indian (1996) and Jeans (1998) were submitted by India for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. His production venture Veyyil won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil in 2007. In 2007, he was awarded an Honorary doctorate by M. G. R. University. He is generally known for making high-budget films in the Tamil movie industry.In a personal appreciation letter to S. Shankar following the Enthiran's release, K. Balachander described Shankar as India's James Cameron, Enthiran as India's Avatar, and Sun Pictures as India's MGM.
Shankar was born on August 17, 1963 in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, India to Muthulakshmi and Shanmugam. He completed a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from Central Polytechnic College Tharamani, before entering film industry.
Plot
'Bhobhar' explores the life and relationships of a small village farmer Rewat who despite being an alcoholic is a hardworking and warm hearted person. His life gets shattered one night when he catches his close friend Puran sneaking out of his room. Puran states that an alcoholic's wife is no more than a whore. And so Rewat ceases communication with his wife Sohni. When Sohni and his youngest son Ganesh beat up his other son Shanker for getting married to a girl from anther cast, inebriated Rewat calls Sohni a whore. Ganesh slaps his father for insulting his mother. Dismayed Rewat leaves his house and family until Puran finds him in the hospital and tells Sohni.
Plot
The film resolves around two childhood friends Vikram Singh and Ajay Singh. Ajay singh grows up and becomes a Doctor (A messiah for the pheasants) while Vikram Singh takes over his ancestors inheritance, and fits into the mighty shoes of a Typical Thakur. Conflict begins between their friendship when Vikram Singh's henchman Shamsher Singh abducts a pheasant girl. Dr Ajay gets Shamsher Singh arrested and thus the bitterness starts. This causes rivalry between the two, and the rest of the drama is on how the two battle out their differences and in the end once again re-unite to fight the villains.

Plot
Shankar and his wife, Kamla, live in a small bungalow in Madras, India, with his only daughter, Kokila, and a maidservant, Manga. Since he is an Engineer with his firm, he has to travel frequently. Kamla's suffers a mild stroke and has been medically advised to take it easy. Shankar is now worried about his family just in case something happens, when he is out of town. So he asks some friends to find a male tenant, who will be able to look after the household in case of an emergency. This is how he gets to meet Sathyamoorthy, approves of him, and rents him the room. After Sathyamoorthy moves in, Shankar has to go out of town. Sathyamoorthy gets to meet Kokila and falls in love with her, she too is attracted to him. Quite unknown to Sathyamoorthy and Kokila, Manga has developed an attraction to him as well. Sathyamoorthy likes both Kokila and Manga - Kokila because she is so attractive, and Manga who is attractive and whose cooking reminds him of his mother. Sathyamoorthy must now make a choice between these two women. Who will he chose, and whose heart will be broken?
Plot
Fresh printed bank notes to the value of incredible 10 billion rupies are stolen in India from a train by the henchmen of super-gangster Vikram living in London. The code card only being able to open the container with the money comes into the possession of beautiful Chandralekha. On the way to Vikram she comes across the two thieves Kadir and Azhagu who are on the run from the police - having in tow country-girl Rajathi whom they kept from committing suicide and who then ran away from her ruthless uncle. After some attempts of cheating each other Chandralekha is making friends with the thieves. When she discovers that Vikram is stopping at nothing - especially not at dead bodies - on his hunt after the loot, she informs the three others about the real value of the code card. In the following pursuit between Vikram, the four heroes and a special police brigade which has to get back the money before a state crisis comes about, not only fierce action, but also love comes to its own.
Plot
Dharampal presides over his palatial home and his family with dictatorial ruthlessness. His wife is terrified of him. His sister would rather die than marry without his permission. Naturally, when his daughter, Rekha falls in love with a mere labourer, Bhola, this angers Dharampal to such an extent that he implicates Bhola for raping and abducting her, and forces her to testify against Bhola in court, and she does so. When Shankar and his wife attempt to help Bhola and Rekha, Dharampal has his men chop off both of Shankar's arms. The only one who could stand up to Dharampal is Kishanlal, his sister's former lover, but how long will Dharampal tolerate him? "Hum bhi tere bandhey hain hum bhi insaan hai, tumhey hum pe taras kyon ahta nahin..." is hummable.
Plot
Village born Lalloo re-locates to Bombay, and returns a wealthy man. He goes to meet his friend, Shankar alias Bhompu, and together they meet and share tales, mostly about women, sex, and playboy magazines' pictures. A Bollywood movie director is shooting a film nearby, and they go and meet him and his beautiful actress, Urvashi. After meeting Urvashi, Shankar feigns a racking cough, and tells his family that he must go to Bombay, and seek medical treatment. Together he and Lalloo take the next train to Bombay to see if they can find the biggest happiness in life.
Plot
Retired school-teacher and widower, Dinanath, lives a middle-classed lifestyle along with three sons: Shankar, his wife Parvati and five children; Ram, his wife, Sita, and two children; and Kanhaiya and his wife, Radha. While Shankar teaches music in a college, Ram is a Court Clerk, and Kanhaiya a Salesman. The trio hand over their monthly earnings to their father who runs the household stringently - often comically inflicting 'school-like' punishment even on adults. Their lifestyle changes dramatically after Parvati, Sita and Radha find out that movie star, Sheela Devi, has moved in next to their house. They decide to invite her over, and she accepts and the trio set about to borrow money, jewelry, renovate the house, buy/lease new furniture, even learn English - in their attempt to impress the actress. The trio do not realize that their respective husbands too are big fans, and each one of them has his very own secret agenda of trying to woo her.

Beena lives a wealthy lifestyle in scenic Ooty, India, along with her widowed mom, cousin Sushma, and maternal uncle, Khushalchand Peshawari. Her marriage has been arranged in her childhood with wealthy Arun, who is the son of businessman Girdharilal and Kamla. One day she and Sushma go to the railway station to receive Kishore Kumar Sharma, a singer, who is scheduled to perform locally, and bring home a young man who they introduce to their dad. After the performance another male claiming to be Kishore Kumar Sharma shows up, and the fake one flees, but not before making a lasting impression on Beena. She does meet him again, this time as her uncle's employee, Peshawarimal, and when his cover is exposed, he flees again. The third time she meets him at her future in-laws house where he is known as Kishore Kumar Verma and works as an Accountant with their business. Beena and Kishore overcome their misunderstanding and rekindle their romance, little knowing that soon Kishore will be on the run again - this time from the Police, for killing Girdharilal's employee, Chunilal.
Plot
Kamla (Padmini) is separated from her parents at a young age due to a train accident. She subsequently learns that her parents have been killed. Devastated, she and her blind sister, Padma (Baby Naaz) return home to find that it is no longer their's. They decide to re-locate to the city, where Kamla is able to survive by using her talent - dancing. She meets with Mohan (Sunil Dutt) and both fall in love. Mohan assists her to get treatment for her sister, and also Mohan wants to marry her, and with the approval of his family, he does so. Then Mohan's family finds out that Kamla has a past - a secret so embarassing that it may threaten her marriage and family.
