Overseas Chinese join the army. More than 13,000 Chinese were in the United States Army during World War II, accounting for more than a fifth of the total number of male overseas Chinese in the US.
Overseas Chinese played a significant role in the victory in the world's anti-Fascist war by becoming a formidable resistance force. More than 13,000 Chinese were in the United States Army during World War II, accounting for more than a fifth of the total number of male overseas Chinese in the US. Let's have a look at some of the efforts and contributions made by overseas Chinese.
The Malayan Peoples' Anti-Japanese Army
Members of the Malayan Peoples' Anti-Japanese Army pose for photo.
The Malayan Peoples' Anti-Japanese Army (MPAJA) was a resistance force against fascism when Malaya was occupied by the Japanese on Dec 8, 1941, during World War II.
It originated among Chinese cadres of the Malayan Communist Party (MCP). The MPAJA claimed to have injured or killed 5,500 Japanese troops while losing 1,000 Chinese soldiers during Japanese-occupied Malaya. Some 340 battles took place during the Japanese invasion of Malaya lasting three years and eight months.
Long before Malaya fell to Japan, many Chinese Malayans had been hostile to Japan, because of the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression from 1937 to 1945.
On Dec 18, 1941, shortly before the Fall of Singapore, the British and the MCP, formerly enemies, agreed to co-operate against the Japanese in Malaya. The British freed those MCP members they were holding in jail.
They also gave some MCP members a crash course in guerilla warfare at 101 special training school in Singapore. These people then were sent to the front or dispersed into the countryside to form an underground resistance force against the Japanese. Although small in number, about 165, they were one of the nuclei around which the MPAJA formed. Those trainees later become the Army's leader, cadre and early members.
Force 136
'Force 136' organized by the British and Chinese governments, most of its members were overseas Chinese; they gathered information and carried out guerilla warfare behind Japanese lines.
After Malaya's fall, the British in Southeast Asia reestablished contact with Malayan Communist Party by Force 136, an irregular warfare organization in August 1943. The MCP leaders entered into discussions with the British representive Colonel John Davis. "It was agreed that in return for arms, training, and medical supplies the MPAJA would cooperate and accept the British Army's orders during the war with Japan.
The both sides signed a cooperation agreement against Japanese on Dec 31, 1943.
Anti-Japanese forces in Philippines
The Philippines Chinese Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Forces was founded by Chinese in May 1942 in Philippines. The resistance force against Japanese invaders made brilliant achievements during the World War II.
There were only 52 members with nine guns in the Chinese-built force at its early stage.
The force fought in 14 provinces in Philippines, killed, injured and captured more than 2,000 enemy soldiers in the battles that lasted three years and four months before Japan surrenders in 1945.
Some 43 members of a Philippines Chinese youth anti-Japanese mortar regiment lost their lives during the war.
The regiment members formed an underground resistance force against the Japanese and carried out guerilla warfare behind Japanese lines.

Two years after China unveiled a sweeping plan to rebuild Silk Road trade links with Europe and Asia, machinery maker XCMG Group has opened a factory in Uzbekistan, sent 300 staff abroad and set ambitious goals to grow overseas.
XCMG's foreign venture piggybacks on China's bold scheme to extend its global influence through financing infrastructure projects in 65 nations that are home to two-thirds of humanity, and at the same time win new markets for companies weighed down by profit-crushing overcapacity at home.
"This is China's grand strategy," said Hanson Liu, assistant president at Xuzhou Construction Machinery Group, which aims to grow overseas income from 15 percent of total revenue in 2014 to more than 30 percent in the next five years.
"It's like how a person in a village has gotten rich and wants to fix roads, build power points, street lamps for the neighbourhood."
Stretching from Hungary to Indonesia, Beijing estimates its much-hyped "One Belt, One Road" initiative will add a $2.5 trillion to China's trade in the next decade, more than the value of its exports in 2013 - when it was the world's top exporter.
While it is too early to assess whether that lofty goal will be realised, the drive offshore is already proving a boon for firms like XCMG, whose listed unit, XCMG Construction Machinery , has posted three years of declining sales.
"Our company, from top to bottom, is focused on this," said Liu in an interview at XCMG's campus in Xuzhou, an industrial city in coastal Jiangsu province where the government-owned firm, one of China's biggest heavy machinery makers, is the largest employer.
CRIPPLING OVERCAPACITY
After years of breakneck growth, the extent of China's overcapacity problem is becoming clear as waning domestic demand and efforts to re-tool the economy slows growth to a pace dubbed by President Xi Jinping as the "new normal".
That has exposed supply gluts that are especially glaring in the steel, coal and cement sectors, where factories have the capacity to produce up to 30 percent more than current demand, official data showed.
"One Belt, One Road" - the name comes from abbreviating the two planks of the scheme, the "Silk Road Economic Belt" and the "21st Century Maritime Silk Road" - aims to carve out new markets for goods that China makes too much of.
There is evidence, from companies and data, that some effect is already being felt.
Auditing firm PWC estimates that more than $250 billion worth of projects, from railways to power plants, have been contracted since "One Belt, One Road" was announced in 2013.
Buoyed with a $50 billion credit line from the Bank of China for such projects, China's largest cement maker, Anhui Conch, is building at least six cement plants in Indonesia, Vietnam and Laos, according to its website.
Steel firms have also said that they are looking to ramp up foreign acquisitions to move capacity to regions such as Southeast Asia and Eastern Europe.
In Shijiazhuang, the capital city of Hebei province, which surrounds Beijing and is China's biggest steel producer, steel exports spiked almost 50 percent to 36.5 billion yuan in the first seven months this year.
The number of Chinese workers employed abroad by Chinese firms shot up by 18 percent to 1 million last year, having crept up by just 4 percent in 2013, commerce ministry data showed.
FANTASY ROAD?
But while firms like XCMG, which were already active overseas, are finding "One Belt, One Road" hits a sweet spot, others are struggling to gain a foothold.
Eight steel mills in Hebei who spoke to Reuters said the scheme was not increasing demand enough to solve their biggest problem, low prices caused by excess supply.
"There has been a little impact from 'One Belt, One Road', but it is not evident," said a manager at one steel mill. "The market involved is too big, and now it's more just a concept."
The infrastructure drive also risks running counter to another of Beijing's policy goals, reforming China's state-run giants - the very firms expected to win the bulk of "One Belt, One Road" deals struck between governments, according to a manager at another steel mill in Hebei.
Local brokerages estimate that up to 1.5 trillion yuan ($235 billion) in state funding has been committed to the initiative so far in investments, grants and loans, some of which will be dispersed through Beijing's new policy lender, the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.

They are competent in both Chinese and the local language and culture, and are thus uniquely regarded as “civil ambassadors” to help Chinese enterprises expand abroad, and bring in foreign investment and high-end technology. Overseas Hong Kong people can make full use of their local experience and connections, accumulated over the years, to attract local investment in the “One Belt, One Road” initiative and develop trusted cooperation within the community. These efforts will lay the foundation for future economic and cultural collaborations and will pave the way for successful civil diplomacy."

The Chinese military’s first homegrown long-range transport plane has flown for the first time, extending Beijing’s impressive record of new warplane development.
But the Xian Y-20 (“Y” for Yun, meaning “transport”), roughly in the same class as the U.S. C-17 or the Russian Il-76, is probably still a long way from being fully operational — to say nothing of it being militarily effective. A lack of custom engines limits the new plane’s potential.
State-owned China Central Television depicted the four-engine jet transport taking off from what was probably the military airfield in Yanliang, central China, home of the People’s Liberation Army Air Force testing establishment. The Y-20, still wearing only its yellow primer paint, flew what appeared to be a short test flight and landed in front of a crowd waving Chinese flags. It seems the transport’s landing gear stayed down for the entire sortie — a standard precaution in early tests of new planes.
“The successful maiden flight of Yun-20 is significant in promoting China’s economic and national defense buildup as well as bettering its emergency handling such as disaster relief and humanitarian aid,” the government-run Xinhua news service announced Saturday.
Development of the new transport began no later than 2005, and was possibly spurred in part by the massive earthquake that killed tens of thousands in Sichuan in 2008. In the disaster’s aftermath, the PLAAF — which has long favored jet fighters over more mundane support aircraft — was able to deploy only a handful of small cargo planes carrying relief supplies. The U.S., by contrast, sent in two Boeing C-17s — welcome assistance but also embarrassing for the Chinese Communist Party.
The Y-20 is the latest in a chain of new Chinese airplanes. Since late 2010 Beijing has debuted two stealth fighter prototypes; a new carrier-based naval fighter; plus radar and patrol planes, two gunship helicopters and, now, a heavyweight cargo plane at least as capacious as Russia’s workhorse Il-76, which China also possesses and which seems to provide the basis of the Y-20′s design. Beijing may also have acquired some of the C-17′s blueprints from a spy working at Boeing.
The Y-20 first appeared in blurry snapshots posted to Party-friendly Chinese Internet forums in December — Beijing’s standard procedure for rolling out major new prototype weapons. A series of overhead images provided by U.S. commercial satellite operator GeoEye in early January provided more detail. In contrast to the high degree of official secrecy surrounding other new warplanes, Beijing promptly announced the Y-20′s existence — a move that trade magazine Flightglobal called “remarkable.”
As with China’s other new warplanes, the Y-20 prototype is apparently fitted with older, Russian-made engines rather than purpose-designed motors. A lack of suitable powerplants has slowed progress on many of the new planes. The Y-20′s current D-30 engines are low-bypass models better suited for supersonic fighters than an efficient, slow-flying cargo hauler. Beijing has poured billions of dollars into developing new engines but so far has little to show for it.
“The giant aircraft will continue to undergo experiments and test flights as scheduled,” Xinhua said of the Y-20. But that doesn’t mean the new transport is close to being ready for frontline use.

China's first female J 10 pilots make overseas debut the development of Chinese air force military

China’s air force needs better central control to avoid miscalculations as territorial tensions rise with Japan over the East China Sea, according to the Australian Air Force chief.
While the Chinese air force’s capability with its equipment is increasing, its regionally-based system does not have sophisticated C2, or command and control, air force chief Air Marshal Geoff Brown said in an interview at an air show on the Malaysian island of Langkawi on Wednesday.
“That’s probably where you’ve got the danger of miscalculation,” said Brown. “I’m not sure if I was commander of the Chinese air force that I’d be happy with the way the C2 was, you’d want a more centralized C2,” he said.
Japan and China both claim ownership of the uninhabited Senkaku Islands, which are known as Diaoyu in China and which are administered by Japan. While China outnumbers Japan by an almost 8-to-1 ratio in air force manpower and is adding more fighter jets, its pilots lag their Japanese counterparts in training and experience, raising the risk of a near miss or collision.
Japan sent aircraft to head off foreign military planes flying close to its airspace a total of 744 times in the nine months to December 2014, up more than 30 percent on the same period the year before and heading for the highest annual total since the end of the Cold War.
In 2013, China set up an air identification zone covering the disputed islands, and last year Japan protested after Chinese fighters flew “abnormally close” to its military planes on two occasions. China has also complained about the activities of Japanese military planes in the area.
“Unlike the Cold War, where there was very much a (set) of well-understood rules of the road, I’m not sure that with the tensions that flare up that the rules of the road are quite as well understood by everybody involved,” said Brown.
Australia is attempting to balance the relationship with its largest trading partner, China, with that of its key military ally, the U.S., which is pivoting resources to the Asia-Pacific in a bid to check the Asian powerhouse’s emerging influence.
U.S. President Barack Obama is strengthening the alliance by stationing as many as 2,500 marines in the northern Australian city of Darwin, which has close access to the South China Sea and shipping lanes that carry more than $5 trillion worth of goods each year.
China has escalated pressure on some Southeast Asian nations as it builds structures and airstrips on reefs in the South China Sea that are also claimed by countries including Vietnam and the Philippines. Vice Adm. Robert Thomas, commander of the U.S. Navy’s Seventh Fleet, on Tuesday urged Southeast Asian countries to form a combined maritime force to patrol the waters.
While the region could benefit from multilateral air force activities, there hasn’t been a lot of impetus for them, Brown said.
“Most of the countries in Southeast Asia tend to like to do things bilaterally with each other, there doesn’t seem to be a good mechanism for a multilateral” effort, he said.

Continuing China's acquisition spree of Ukrainian military systems, the first of 3 IL-78 "Midas" tankers takes off from an Ukrainian airfield, colored in standard People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) light blue/grey paint job. While China originally purchased 8 Il-78 tankers from Russia in 2005, that deal has been on hold for nearly a decade due to Russian inability to source new airframes. The three IL-78 tankers are refurbished from Ukrainian Air Force surplus and each are fitted with three UPAZ-1 aerial refueling pods to transfer up to 85 tons of on board fuel. The long awaited PLAAF acquisition of Il-78 tankers will give China the ability to refuel aircraft such as the Su-30 strike fighters and KJ-2000 Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEWC) system during extended missions over disputed maritime areas.
The Il-78 will improve Chinese capability for extended air patrols in both combat and intelligence gathering missions, and in the near future, refuel J-20 stealth fighters and a possible new bomber design.

"The Transformation of Chinese Painting Through Overseas Collecting" by Prof. Zaixin Hong
In Western art history over the past three decades, studies on art marketing and collecting have proliferated. Likewise, students of Chinese art have also demonstrated an increasing interest in the area that has become such a significant topic. This public talk is intended to address the role of overseas collecting in the transformation of Chinese painting from the early twentieth century to our time. It begins with a story of an important yet little-studied relationship between Chinese painting and its emerging global market embodied in a half-century-long dialogue between Huang Binhong (1865-1955), a leading national style painting master, and art dealers, collectors, artists, and art historians in the West. This two-way interchange not only contributed to the making of the overseas collections of Chinese painting, but also facilitated Huang to establish his modernist art style. Symbolically, stories as such recur in the recent decades as the global market for Chinese contemporary art has expanded in an unprecedented scope and momentum.

China has long adhered to a principle of ‘non-interference’ in other states’ affairs. However, as more of its companies have been investing in projects overseas, and millions of its nationals are travelling abroad, Beijing is finding itself progressively involved in other countries – through the need to protect these interests and citizens.
During the turmoil of the Arab Spring in 2011, China was compelled to evacuate more than 35,000 Chinese workers and expatriates from Libya, and later it led the hunt for the killers of 13 Chinese sailors in the Golden Triangle region of the Mekong River. In 2015, Beijing sent a combat battalion to join the UN peacekeeping mission in South Sudan, where it has huge oil ventures. Its plans to construct a New Silk Road will generate new commercial interests in Pakistan that require protection.
The shift in Chinese foreign policy towards a more interventionist approach abroad has not been the result of grand strategy, but an adjustment to unfolding events. The risk appetite of state-owned Chinese business is inexorably drawing the Chinese state into security hotspots, while citizens of the rising power demand that their government protects compatriots caught in crises overseas, including via military means.
