Mercredi 20 août 2014, 5 000 enfants d’Ile-de-France, 1 000 personnes de Basse-Normandie, qui n’ont pas eu la chance de partir en vacances, se retrouvent, pour une journée inoubliable, sur la plage de Ouistreham, avec le Secours populaire français. Cette formidable aventure d’un jour est pour ces enfants, âgés de 6 à 12 ans, la grande sortie de l’été avant la reprise de l’école. A l’occasion de cette grande journée de solidarité, la Ministre Najat Vallaud-Belkacem sera présente pour apporter son soutien à cette initiative, tout comme Valérie Trierweiler, une des marraines de l’association.

Ouistreham is a commune in the Calvados department' in the Basse-Normandie region in northwestern France.
Ouistreham is a small port with fishing boats, leisure craft and a ferry-harbour. It serves as the port of the city of Caen. The town is about the mouth of the Canal de Caen à la Mer.
The name Ouistreham derives from ouistre - 'oyster' and Saxon ham= 'village'. It has been a trading port since the Middle Ages. The harbour is now a part of "Port de Caen-Ouistreham". Ouistreham is pronounced Wee-ss-tram.
Since the beginning of the 20th century, it is a bathing beach on the "Riva Bella".
On 6 June 1944, No. 4 Commando landed at Ouistreham (Sword Beach) and fought their way to Pegasus Bridge, with the 177 Free French of the No. 10 (Inter-Allied) Commando given the honour of spearheading the advance. The assault on Ouistreham was featured in the movie The Longest Day, although the film location for Ouistreham was actually at Port-en-Bessin.

La « Journée des oubliés des vacances » à Ouistreham
Mercredi 20 août 2014, 5 000 enfants d’Ile-de-France, 1 000 personnes de Basse-Normandie, qui n’ont pas eu la chance de partir en vacances, se retrouvent, pour une journée inoubliable, sur la plage de Ouistreham, avec le Secours populaire français. Cette formidable aventure d’un jour est pour ces enfants, âgés de 6 à 12 ans, la grande sortie de l’été avant la reprise de l’école. A l’occasion de cette grande journée de solidarité, la Ministre Najat Vallaud-Belkacem sera présente pour apporter son soutien à cette initiative, tout comme Valérie Trierweiler, une des marraines de l’association. -

We're off to France for the summer travelling on Brittany Ferries! The Portsmouth to Cherbourg fast ferry is the Normandie Express - taking just 3 hours to sail from port to port, this fast catamaran carries up to 850 passengers and 235 cars on each crossing! We've been on it before for a day trip to France on bikes this time we are loaded up with as much as we can fit in the car and roof box! Left Portsmouth early and after a marathon drive we woke the following morning to blazing sun and 25deg in Cannes. Amazing how far you can get with fast toll roads and a days driving! Introduced the kids to the hitchhikers guide to the universe on audio cd.... they loved it.... a little to much! After 3 cds Marvin the paranoid android was wearing thin! ______________________________________________...

We're off to France for the summer travelling on Brittany Ferries! The Portsmouth to Cherbourg fast ferry is the Normandie Express - taking just 3 hours to sail...
We're off to France for the summer travelling on Brittany Ferries! The Portsmouth to Cherbourg fast ferry is the Normandie Express - taking just 3 hours to sail from port to port, this fast catamaran carries up to 850 passengers and 235 cars on each crossing! We've been on it before for a day trip to France on bikes this time we are loaded up with as much as we can fit in the car and roof box!
Left Portsmouth early and after a marathon drive we woke the following morning to blazing sun and 25deg in Cannes. Amazing how far you can get with fast toll roads and a days driving! Introduced the kids to the hitchhikers guide to the universe on audio cd.... they loved it.... a little to much! After 3 cds Marvin the paranoid android was wearing thin!
