The Gallipoli Campaign, also known as the Dardanelles Campaign or the Battle of Gallipoli or the Battle of Çanakkale (Turkish: Çanakkale Savaşı), took place on the Gallipoli peninsula (Gelibolu in modern Turkey) in the Ottoman Empire between 25 April 1915 and 9 January 1916, during World War I. Aiming to secure a sea route to Russia, the British and French launched a naval campaign to force a passage through the Dardanelles. After the naval operation, an amphibious landing was undertaken on the Gallipoli peninsula, to capture the Ottoman capital of Constantinople (Istanbul).[6] After eight months the land campaign also failed with many casualties on both sides, and the invasion force was withdrawn to Egypt.
The campaign was one of the greatest Ottoman victories during the war and is considered a major failure of the Allies. In Turkey, it is perceived as a defining moment in the nation's history—a final surge in the defence of the motherland as the Ottoman Empire crumbled. The struggle formed the basis for the Turkish War of Independence and the founding of the Republic of Turkey eight years later under Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, a commander at Gallipoli. The campaign is often considered to mark the birth of national consciousness in Australia and New Zealand and the date of the landing, 25 April, is known as "Anzac Day". Peter Hart described the state of the Gallipoli campaign in 1915 as "lunatic persistence in the face of the obvious" - and the Battle of Hill 60 proved just that. Outgunned and with a lack of artillery support, the battle was one of the bloodiest days on the peninsular near Constantinople. The Ottoman capital was still out of reach for the Entente to capture. Meanwhile, the war spread to the Indian border region and on the Western and Eastern Front the carnage continued in the air and on ground.

The Water Diviner is a historical fictional drama film directed by Russell Crowe. The screenplay, written by Andrew Anastasios and Andrew Knight, is based on the book of the same name, written by Andrew Anastasios and Dr Meaghan Wilson-Anastasios.
The film stars Crowe, Olga Kurylenko, Jai Courtney, Cem Yılmaz and Yılmaz Erdoğan. The Water Diviner had its world premiere at the State Theatre in Sydney, Australia on December 2, 2014. It opened in Australian and New Zealand cinemas on December 26, 2014. The film is scheduled for a limited release in the US on April 24, 2015.
The film opens in 1919, after the end of World War I. Joshua Connor (Russell Crowe) is an Australian farmer, and water diviner. He is shown locating and digging a well. When he returns home after his exertions, his wife Eliza (Jacqueline McKenzie) discloses that his three sons Art, Edward ( James Fraser) and Henry (Ben O'Toole) left for war to serve with the ANZACs at the Battle of Gallipoli 5 years previously and have not returned. All are presumed dead. As the story unfolds Eliza unable to deal with the grief commits suicide and Connor pledges to bring the bodies of his sons home to be buried alongside their mother.
Connor travels to Turkey where he decides to stay in a Turkish hotel run by the recently widowed Turkish Ayshe (Olga Kurylenko), the hotel owner. When Connor contacts the British consul he is told that Gallipoli is off limits and he is forbidden to travel. After befriending Ayshe's son Orhan (Dylan Georgiades), Ayshe warms to the rugged Australian when she learns of his loss and why he is in Turkey. She advises him to bribe a fisherman from a local village and that will allow him to make his way to Gallipoli.
Connor makes the journey and arrives in Gallipoli only to be met with more resistance. The ANZACs are engaged in a mass burial detail and all civilians are forbidden. Major Hasan (Yılmaz Erdoğan) a Turkish officer assisting the ANZACs advises the ANZAC captain Lt-Col Cyril Hughes (Jai Courtney) to allow Connor to search for his sons and Hughes acquiesces.
Through flashbacks it is revealed that the 3 boys were engaged in combat when Art got injured returning to his trench. As Henry and Edward ran to his rescue the Turkish army machine gunned them killing one and badly wounding the other with the fate of the oldest brother Art unknown.
Connor walks the battlefield reminiscing about his sons. He uncovers the two younger boys’ bodies. Shockingly discovering a bullet hole in the head of one of the skulls. An ANZAC sergeant implies that Major Hasan oversaw the defence in the area and ordered all casualties to be executed. Connor attempts to assault Hasan but is stopped.
Major Hasan recognises Connor's surname and realises that Art may have been taken prisoner. At this point he declines to help further and the ANZACs force Connor to leave. Connor returns to Ayshe's hotel where she is celebrating her son, Orhan's bris. Later Connor intervenes when Ayshe's brother in law attempts to hit her. Connor is set upon by her brother in law in the street but Sergeant Jemal (Cem Yılmaz) intervenes and brings Connor to Major Hasan.
They explain that the Greeks have invaded and the Turks are going to war to defend their country as the British are not intervening. Connor realises they are going through the region where his son was held. At this stage the British intervene and tell Connor he is to be removed from the country but he escapes thanks to Ayshe and joins the Turks on the train.
The train is ambushed and almost all of the soldiers are killed. As a Greek officer prepares to execute Hasan and Jemal, Connor intervenes but unfortunately Jemal is killed. Connor and Hasan flee and come across a village where they spot a water divining well. The well is constructed in the manner Connor taught to his sons. He investigates further, and finds his son Art, alive, but somewhat dishevelled and badly traumatised by his experiences in the war.
Art discloses that at the end of the battle Henry was badly injured. Henry pleaded with Art to end his suffering and Art, with no other option, shot his younger brother. Believing he had caused his brother's deaths, he felt he could never return to his family. As he finishes his story, the Greeks attack the town and Art shows his father an escape route through the mountains.
Racked with guilt, Art refuses to follow his father but when Connor refuses to leave without his son Art agrees to follow him. They escape into the mountains and evade the Greek army, returning to Ayshe's hotel. The film ends with Ayshe making coffee for Connor. It is hinted that it is very sweet—a sign that she is falling for Connor.

During the Gallipoli campaign there was a battle reguarded as one the most useless loss of life and manpower during the Gallipoli campaign called the The Battle of the Nek.On the 7th of August, 1915, During this part of the Gallipoli campaign the British commonwealth and the French struggled to maintain a strong foothold in the peninsula. The purpose of the battle was to relief British at Sari Bair so both the Anzacs and the British could secure the beachead of Sulva bay so futher reinforcements can land without little resistance. The battleground of the Nek was formed by mountain passages of the Sari Bair range, leaving a perfect place were the Ottomans could dig in a defend.
At 4:23 am the naval bombardment began but it was inaccurate and too early (As it was planed to begin at 4:30 so the Anzacs could capture the Turkish trenches with ease) and the Turks dug in after the bombardment finished.
At 4:30 the first wave began their attack and they were slaughtered.
At 4:40 the second wave charged and they had met the same fate as their comrades before.
At 4:50 the third wave were aware this was "Cold Bloody Murder" and they were cut down.
At 5:15 the forth wave was called off but due to the lack communications some of the officers didn't receive the order and some off the men were sent into the graveyard.
After the battle over 200 men had littered the 'football sized' battlefield and offensive at Sari Bair and Chunuk Bair was a disaster

Organised by the Cezire Association, speakers Ertan Karpazlı, Mustafa Kureyşi and Hüseyin Bakayi will put the spotlight on the role of the Turks of Cyprus during this famous battle and in the years immediately after.
Journalist and Cezire Association Turkey Representative Ertan Karpazlı will highlight the participation of Cypriot Turks at Çanakkale in 1915, and how their role continued into the Turkish War of Independence, which started in 1919.
The title of the second talk by academic Mustafa Kureyşi, a specialist in Cypriot history and Islam, is: Turkish prisoners of war in Famagusta and the organisation for union with Turkey.
Through newly discovered primary sources, Kureyşi will explain what happened to the Ottoman Turks caught as prisoners of war (POWs) by the British during the Battle of Çanakkale and brought to British-occupied Cyprus. It includes an incredible plan to rescue them and to start a revolt to return Cyprus to Ottoman Turkey.

Additional ceremonies to commemorate 1915’s Gelibolu (Gallipoli) fighting have been held in Turkey’s northwestern province of Canakkale, scene of the pivotal World War One conflict.
Australian Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove, Canakkale Governor Ahmet Cinar and Australian consul Nicholas Sergi attended the first event on Thursday.
Cosgrove and Cinar placed wreaths at the Turkish 57th Infantry Regiment cemetery. Some visitors also left flowers on symbolic tombs at the site.
Speaking to the press after the ceremony, Cosgrove said that he was “a very proud Australian, honored to be here at this place where very brave men defending Turkish soil fought and died”.
“The 57th Regiment is one of the most famous regiments of modern Turkey,” he said, adding that it “represented a path for the Turkish resistance at Gallipoli which turned the battle for Turkey”.
“The 57th Regiment is no longer on the Turkish order of battle but it lives on, and while people visit this memorial, the regiment will never die,” he said.
Canakkale Governor Cinar emphasized the importance of the 1915 fight which eventually resulted in friendship between the opposing nations.
Tens of thousands of Turkish nationals and soldiers died in the eight-month campaign, along with tens of thousands of Europeans, plus between 7,000 - 8,000 Australians and nearly 3,000 New Zealanders.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander troops remembered
Another event took place at Anzac Cove on Gallipoli peninsula which was the ANZAC (the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps’) landing site at the start of the battle in April 1915.
Cosgrove and an accompanying delegation followed a ceremony to pay tribute to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander troops from Australia.
Although Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders were excluded from serving in the armed forces during WWI, many served voluntarily at Gallipoli, according to Australia’s Department of Veterans’ Affairs.
More than 300 people attended the ceremony where a spiritual ritual with smoke and arrows took place.
“In traditional Aboriginal society death is a time when a spirit is released from the physical body to rejoin the unseen world,” organizers said, adding: “Ceremonies surrounding death facilitate the spirit returning to its home.”
Ceremony at Lone Pine
Another Australian service took place at the Lone Pine Cemetery where the Australian Army Band and the Gregory Terrace-All Hallows’ Gallipoli Choir led by Major Peter Thomas performed.
Australian, New Zealander, Canadian, Indian and Turkish officials attended the ceremony.
Addressing an estimated 500-strong audience at the site where Australian troops mounted a diversionary attack on the Ottoman trenches in August 1915, Governor-General Cosgrove said that Thursday’s gathering reflected a remarkable period in modern world history, which affected not only Australia but the entire world.
“The great battles of August 1915, here at Lone Pine and elsewhere on the Gallipoli battlefields, were for the senior commanders the ‘last throw of the dice’,” he said.
“They were an all-out push to gain the high ground and beyond to finally control one side of the Dardanelles. After these battles, although it took several more months, withdrawal was the only option left,” he added.
Cosgrove said that thousands of soldiers died on both sides “in the dark depths of trenches with bayonet and club and bomb”.
“We thus say to them our benediction: ‘Rest in Peace, Johnnies and Mehmets together,’ he added in a reference to Turkey’s founder leader Mustafa Kemal Ataturk’s words.
After Cosgrove’s speech the crowds stood in silent for a minute for those who lost their lives during the campaign. The national anthems of both countries were also sung.
A series of extra remembrance ceremonies will be held over the next three days, arranged to accommodate the huge numbers of visitors during the centenary year of the Gallipoli landings.
On Saturday, August 8, another event for New Zealanders will be held at the Chunuk Bair Memorial -- located on a hill that, in August 1915, was one of the Allied forces’ main objectives and where many New Zealanders lost their lives.
This year marks 100 years since the conflict in the Dardanelles Strait, which became a turning point for Turks fighting against the invading Allies during WWI.
More than 43,000 Australians and New Zealanders had applied to attend this April’s main annual commemorations but just 10,000 places were available.

Australia presented three artifacts from the 1915 Battle of Gallipoli to a Turkish military museum on Friday as a “gesture of friendship”.
The Australian War Memorial donated a unit banner, a folding periscope and a hand grenade to the Canakkale Navy Museum in northwestern Turkey.
Addressing a ceremony at the museum, Australian Governor-General Peter Cosgrove said that the handing over of the artifacts was “an appropriately significant gesture of the friendship and goodwill we share and a sign of the importance of the 100th anniversary of the campaign to our two countries”.
Cosgrove thanked the Turkish Navy and Canakkale Navy Museum for being consistent and supportive partners of Australia. “The Canakkale Naval Museum, like the Australian War Memorial, plays an important part in preserving the military history of the nation and ensuring that future generations are informed and educated about the sacrifices of those before them,” he said.
He added that the periscope, which was used by Lieutenant Colonel JC Robertson, who was possibly one of the first men ashore on Gallipoli, was a rare example of a folding periscope used to observe the battlefield from a trench.
Cosgrove also said that the hand grenade used by the Anzac (the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps’) forces was commonly referred to as a “cricket ball”.
“[It] perhaps helps explain why a number of them were able, on occasion, to successfully catch the grenades and return them before they exploded,” he said.
“I am very pleased to be returning this one to its original owners in a much more peaceful manner and in much happier circumstances,” he added.
Cosgrove and an accompanying delegation also visited the museum after the ceremony.
More than 43,000 Australians and New Zealanders had applied to attend this April’s main annual commemorations but just 10,000 places were available.

Australians, New Zealanders and Turks commemorated ANZAC Day on Thursday on the Gallipoli peninsula in Turkey.
ANZAC Day (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) is the annual commemoration of the ill-fated 1915 Gallipoli landings of Australian and New Zealand troops in the First World War.
Visiting the site in Turkey has become a pilgrimage for many Australians and New Zealanders to remember the first major military action by ANZAC forces in the early 20th century conflict.
Father Stuart Hall, Principal Chaplain at the Australian Defence Force addressed his country's service at Lone Pine, site of a diversionary battle with Turkish forces.
The battle of Lone Pine was designed to draw attention away from main assaults elsewhere on the Gallipoli Peninsula.
"As we are faced with the continuing threats of an uncertain world fraught with the reality of evil and suffering, give them (Australian forces) that commitment to their nation's welfare that has inspired members of the Australian Defence Force for over a century," he said.
At the Chunuk Bair, New Zealanders and Turks commemorated the battle that was fought there.
"We remember those New Zealanders who fought and died here 98 years ago," said Jonathan Coleman, New Zealand's Minister of Defence.
"We also pay our respects to the Turks who were fighting to defend their homeland and our allies who fought beside us."
This year marks the 98th anniversary of the landings, designed to capture the Ottoman capital of Constantinople (Istanbul) and secure a sea route to Russia, knocking Turkey out of the war.
Major commemoration events are already being planned for the centenary in 2015.

Learn more - http://www.battleoflongtan.com Late afternoon August 18, 1966 South Vietnam -- for three and a half hours, in the pouring rain, amid the mud and shattered trees of a rubber plantation called Long Tan, Major Harry Smith and his dispersed company of 108 young and mostly inexperienced Australian and New Zealand soldiers are fighting for their lives, holding off an overwhelming enemy force of 2,500 battle hardened Viet Cong and North Vietnamese soldiers. With their ammunition running out, their casualties mounting and the enemy massing for a final assault each man begins to search for his own answer -- and the strength to triumph over an uncertain future with honor, decency and courage.
The ensuing Battle of Long Tan becomes one of the most savage and decisive engagements in ANZAC history, earning both the United States and South Vietnamese Presidential Unit Citations for gallantry along with many individual awards. But sadly not before 18 Australians and more than 500 enemy are killed. Heroism, tragedy and the sacrifice of battle, Long Tan is a grueling and dramatic exploration of war with all its horror, that will rightly take its place alongside war classics such as Gallipoli, Breaker Morant, Saving Private Ryan, Zulu & Blackhawk Down.
This documentary and our upcoming movie is a tribute to the nobility and uncommon valor of these men -- many of them conscripts - under fire. It honors their loyalty to their country and to each other, and it brings to light the heroism and unimaginable sacrifice of all military men and women both home and abroad.
Long Tan is the true story of ordinary boys who became extraordinary men.
