The Mozambique Channel, located between Madagascar on the east and Mozambique on the west, forms an important shipping route round the southern tip of Africa in to the Indian Ocean. The channel has a length of around 1,600 km and a width of between 400 and 1,000 km, reaching depths of up to 3,000 m. The channel plays host to important ocean currents such as the Agulhas and Mozambique currents.
The Mozambique Channel was formed when Madagascar began its separation from continental Africa during the break-up of the super-continent of Gondwanaland some 165 million years ago. In the mid-Eocene to the early Miocene the channel may have been spanned by a land bridge allowing terrestrial mammals to move between Madagascar and the mainland.
At the northern entrances of the Mozambique Channel occur a number of islands, reefs and submarine banks. The largest land masses in this area are those of the Comoros Islands. With an area of 2,170 km² this volcanic group consists of 4 main islands: Ngazidja, Nzwani, Mwali, Mayotte and several smaller islets that lie off the main islands.
Farther in to the channel occur a trio of widely separated coral reefs and islands that form overseas possessions of France: Bassas da India, Juan de Nova and Île Europa. These islands are strategically important — their ownership is disputed between France and Madagascar. All are small, flat and uninhabited. The islets of Europa and Juan de Nova are important habitats for migrating landbirds and breeding seabirds.
Northwards, lying at the entrances in to the Channel, lie the French-owned Îles Glorieuses (Glorioso Islands) and the submerged reefs of Banc du Geyser and Banc du Leven (Banc du Zelee), both of which lie in international waters.
So, you are welcome to The Mozambique Channel and Ilha de Moçambique...and feel the peace on the native boat.

The Island of Mozambique (Portuguese: Ilha de Moçambique) lies off northern Mozambique, between the Mozambique Channel and Mossuril Bay, and is part of Nampula Province. Prior to 1898, it was the capital of colonial Portuguese East Africa. With its rich history and sandy beaches, the Island of Mozambique is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Mozambique's fastest growing tourist destinations. It has a permanent population of approximately 14,000 people and is served by nearby Lumbo Airport on the Nampula mainland.

Nestled between South Africa and Tanzania, on the south-eastern coast of Africa lies the tropical paradise of Mozambique. The 2500-km long coastline with white palm lined beaches, pristine crystal clear waters, lagoons and spectacular corral reefs, is one of the most popular holiday destinations on the African continent.
This magnificent coastline with its secluded unspoiled beaches is scattered with stunning resorts that blend in with the natural beauty of the region.
With its all year round summer climate and safe beaches this paradise offers unforgettable family holidays and for the adventurous many activities, especially fishing, diving, snorkeling and sailing as well as peace and tranquility for those who just want to laze around on white tropical beaches and enjoy life.
Magnificent sunrises, calm lukewarm waters of the Indian Ocean, excellent cuisine and friendly people await those who want to discover this tropical paradise called Mozambique.
A video by Adventure Films called “Discover Mozambique” must be the most comprehensive audio-visual tourist guide available covering the coastline from Ponta do Ouro in the south all the way up to Inhasoro just south of Beira.
The viewer will experience, with superb video and audio quality, the beauty of the resorts on this part of the coastline. Places like Ponta du Ouro and Malongane, Mamoli, Marracuene, Macaneta, Bilene, Xai-Xai, Chongoene, Chizavane, Chidenguele, Zavora, Paindane, Guinjata, Jangamo, Coconut Bay, Inhambane, Barra, Maxixe, Morrungulo, Pomene, Vilanculos and Inhasoro.
This video is a must for all who plan to travel to Mozambique. Not only for a family holiday but also for scuba divers, snorkelers, fishermen either deep sea or surf, sailors as well as 4X4 enthusiasts.
Mozambique is one of the worlds best kept diving, spearfishing and big game fishing secrets. With a coastline of over 2500 km, one only has to look at her neighboring exotic dive destinations such as Mauritius, Comoros and the Maldives to understand what lies beneath the warm Indian Ocean – the most pristine and virgin reefs in the world with names like Bass City, Texas, Manta, Lighthouse, Jangamo, Playstation, Zambia Shoal, Sylvia Shoal and many more.
A huge diversity of game fish abounds in the Mozambican waters including Sailfish and Marlin. This coastline is also famous for huge King-fish catches.
“Discover Mozambique” is the ultimate guide for planning your trip to this tropical paradise. It covers all the resorts on this part of the coastline by showing all the lodges, hotels and campsites where you can enjoy an unforgettable holiday experience. It offers handy information on road conditions, beaches, dive camps and other activities and tourist attractions.
