Upper Amazon Peru 2015
For one magical week aboard the Delfin II out of Nauta, Peru, we explored the upper Amazon with a fantastic crew of naturalists, adventurers, and photographers. This slideshow comes directly from our iPhones, leaving the closeups to the others who had bigger cameras with bigger lenses. It goes to show there was beauty and wonder at every turn.

Pablo Escobar was the mastermind of drug trafficking and narco terrorism in Colombia during the 1980s. He transformed the city of Medellin into the cocaine capital of the world, and pioneered a model that almost every major criminal organization would later adopt.
Countries around the globe are still grappling with the aftermath of Escobar's reign 20 years after his death, from the hired killers he trained as his army of underage hitmen to the remote cocaine labs and clandestine air strips in the jungles of Peru helping feed the world's hunger for coke.
In the last part of our series we embed with the Peruvian National Police into the Upper-Huallaga, once the main coca supplier region to the Medellin Cartel. The Huallaga inherited a conflict that lasts up to 2015, when locals stills struggle to find new crops that substitute the traditional coca economy.

The ancient city of Machu Picchu is one of the world's best known archaeological sites.
Machu Picchu is tangible evidence of the urban Inca Empire at the peak of its power and achievement—a citadel of cut stone fit together without mortar so tightly that its cracks still can't be penetrated by a knife blade.
The complex of palaces and plazas, temples and homes may have been built as a ceremonial site, a military stronghold, or a retreat for ruling elites—its dramatic location is certainly well suited for any of those purposes. The ruins lie on a high ridge, surrounded on three sides by the windy, turbulent Urubamba River some 2,000 feet (610 meters) below.
Scholars are still striving to uncover clues to the mysteries hidden here high in the eastern slopes of the Andes, covered with tropical forests of the upper Amazon Basin. Machu Picchu appears to lie at the center of a network of related sites and trails—and many landmarks both man-made and mountainous appear to align with astronomical events like the solstice sunset. The Inca had no written language, so they left no record of why they built the site or how they used it before it was abandoned in the early 16th century.
Landscape engineering skills are in strong evidence at Machu Picchu. The site's buildings, walls, terraces, and ramps reclaim the steep mountainous terrain and make the city blend naturally into the rock escarpments on which it is situated. The 700-plus terraces preserved soil, promoted agriculture, and served as part of an extensive water-distribution system that conserved water and limited erosion on the steep slopes.
The Inca's achievements and skills are all the more impressive in light of the knowledge they lacked. When Machu Picchu was built some 500 years ago the Inca had no iron, no steel, and no wheels. Their tremendous effort apparently benefited relatively few people—some experts maintain that fewer than a thousand individuals lived here.
In 1911 a Peruvian guide led Yale professor Hiram Bingham up a steep mountainside and into the history books as the first Western scholar to lay eyes on the "lost city" of Machu Picchu. While indigenous peoples knew of the site, Peru's Spanish conquerors never did—a fact which aided Machu Picchu's isolation, and preservation, over the centuries.
Today Machu Picchu is far from isolated. In fact it's a must-see for any visitor to Peru and the draw that compels many to travel to that nation. Machu Picchu's management challenge is preservation of the site while making it accessible to all those who hope to experience an incredible part of Inca history.

Four separate investigations by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) led to the seizure of several looted Peruvian artifacts smuggled into the United States during the last several years. The artifacts were returned to the Peruvian Consuls during simultaneous repatriation ceremonies in San Antonio, Denver and Boston.
Two paintings of St. Vincent Ferrer and St. Anthony Abbot were returned Oct. 22 by HSI San Antonio. They were stolen from the Maria Magdalena Church in Taray, Peru, in October 2001. The paintings were ripped from the upper-left and upper-right niches of the principal altar of the church. Both were retouched and reframed for sale and auction in the United States. The Peruvian Consul in Houston accepted the paintings at a ceremony at the San Antonio Museum of Art, hosted by HSI San Antonio Special Agent in Charge Janice Ayala.

How to Get There
==================
On his first trip to the site Hiram Bingham walked for six days. Today many choose to follow in his footsteps by hiking to the ruins on the legendary Inca Trail. It's an experience like no other, but one no longer necessary. Train trips from Cusco take only a few hours.
When to Visit
===========
Mountain archaeologist and National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Johan Reinhard offered this tip on how to escape the crowds that typically fill the site by midday. "I traditionally climb to the top of a nearby peak with a pack lunch and wait till the crowds are gone," he wrote in National Geographic Traveler.
How to Visit
==============
For the fit there is simply no substitute for traveling to Machu Picchu the way the Inca themselves did—on foot. Today the Inca Trail winds through the mountains and along the path of the ancient royal highway. More than 75,000 people make the trip each year and along the way experience some of the associated sites that were part of the Inca network in this area.
It's no longer possible to do the trek independently. Due to heavy use (and subsequent environmental impact) the trail has become heavily regulated. Visitors must sign up with an organized group to tackle either the classic four-day route or a recently added two-day option.

This Neo-Classic building was completed in 1938 and stands on the foundation of the former Pizzarro Palace. In the palace gardens is the house in which Pizzarro was killed. Lima, the City of Kings, became the capital of the largest region in Spanish South America and was where the viceroys of the Spanish crown resided. During colonial times this city was the largest, most populated, finest and most cultivated city on the continent. Some of the most beautiful colonial buildings in South America are to be found in Lima’s old town along with carved balconies of Moorish origin. Huaraz is the 3,050 metre high capital of the Departamento Ancash in the White Mountain range, the Cordillera Blanca. Several natural catastrophes destroyed the majority of the old houses and many people were killed. In 1824 Simon Bolivar built his headquarters there prior to his bloody struggle for Peru’s independence. The valley oasis of Nazca which played an important role during the early history of Peru is a desolate area in the south of the country. Peru – a land of extremes and intrigue – principally known for being home to the most important archaeological site in all of the Americas, offers in reality so much more. Its landscapes range from high Andean peaks, to sultry Amazon rainforests, from high altitude deserts and wild windswept coasts. Of course its great to travel with the Incas from Cusco to the awe-inspiring Machu Picchu, but its also possible to get off the beaten track, to explore remote ruins of the cloud warriors in the north, or afro-Peruvian beats along the pacific coast. Most of all it’s a diverse country that offers something for everyone. But for many, a trip to Peru will begin in Cusco.
As the ancient Inca capital, and the political power base in colonial times, Cusco has its fair share of sites. Sitting in a narrow valley surrounded by pine-covered hills, it’s a stunning place with enough cathedrals, churches, museums, galleries, cafes and shops to keep the modern traveller entertained for a week. Of course with one of the world’s foremost tourist attractions lying just up the road, most of the time Cusco is busy with locals and travellers alike, but don’t let that put you off; like many other similar locations, Cusco is popular for a reason… it’s simply a beautiful place to hang out.
As the traditional thoroughfare between Cusco and Machu Picchu, the lush agricultural Sacred Valley is littered with impressive Inca ruins. Probably the most famous are the sites of Pisac – where the famous terraces rise over a thousand feet from the valley floor to the mountaintop – and at Ullataytambo. Here again the site overs a great insight into the life of the Inca nation and some great views of the Sacred Valley. There are also some pretty towns and villages to explore; you can hike, horse ride, mountain bike or even paraglide; and you can stay in some pretty special accommodation.
But of course most people travelling this way have one goal in mind, and that’s to reach the ancient Inca citadel of Machu Pichu. There are many ways to get to the sacred Inca site: you can trek along the Inca Trail, or walk staying at beautiful mountain lodges, or you can horse ride, pretty much all the way there. Wild Frontiers offers a horse riding trip through the region.
There are plenty of trains to take you to Machu Picchu, but this is the most special. The Hiram Bingham service, operated by the Belmond Orient Express, offers a great way to climb through the Andean foothills to Machu Picchu, presenting great views – either from your seat of the observation car – delicious dining and champagne! Alighting at Aguas Calientes, buses then take us the last part of the journey to the actual site itself.
Although the exact purpose and function of Machu Picchu is still a matter of conjecture, there’s no denying that for the Incas this awe-inspiring ancient city must have been a very important ceremonial site. The quality of the buildings, of the intricate terracing, and the lofty position of the citadel itself, all point towards a hugely important cultural centre. Interestingly, it was never revealed to the Spanish invaders, and was only discovered in the early 20th century when American historian, Hiram Bingham, chanced upon it while searching for the lost city of Vilcabamba. Today it undoubtedly forms the highlight for most peoples’ trips to Peru.
For many that is tourism in Peru; but not for us at Wild Frontiers. For us this vast country offers much more. For a start there is the beautiful Lake Titicaca to check out, a giant inland sea, peppered by idyllic rural islands. (Use images from Bolivia) There is the picturesque town of Araquipa, back-dropped by the stunning El Misti volcano, and access point to the spectacular Colca Canyon, where you are pretty much guaranteed to see the mighty Andean condor fly. There are the quite extraordinary Nazca lines to fly above and Peru is one of the best places to visit the Amazon rainforest, where you are likely to stumble upon all manner of exotic animals. And in the country’s rarely visited northern highlands were we run one of our most successful group tours to visit, among other places, the fortress of Kuelap, and the home of the ancient cloud warriors of Chachopyas, and the newly discovered Gocta Falls.
And lastly of course there are the Peruvians themselves, whose colourful culture dates back into the mists of time, and who are as hospitable and friendly as any on the continent.
(245 or 246) For most tourism to Peru will revolve around three places, Cusco, the Sacred Valley and here at Macchu Pichu. But my advice is to remember, as amazing as those places are there’s a lot more travelling in Peru than just that. Come and see for yourself.

We can meet kechua and uro indians, we can buy their traditional clothing and listen to their songs and music. From an airplaine, we can try to solve the secret of the Nazca lines, we can take a train to the Altiplano, we can travel through the paradise of the Paracas Paninsula on boat, we can take a look at the monuments of Lima and Cuzco, and follow Thor Heyerdahl’s path, when we sit into a boat on the Titicaca lake.

http://www.expedia.com/Cusco-Machu-Picchu.d6053554.Destination-Travel-Guides
In Cusco, and the Sacred Valley, magnificent ruins await the adventurous traveler. The most famous of all is Machu Picchu.
Cusco is the former capital of the Inca Empire of the Sun. Since the 16th century, Spanish colonial buildings were built atop former Inca Palaces, of which only the foundations remain. Examples in the central Plaza de Armas are the Cusco Cathedral and La Compañia church. Another striking example is Qorikancha, the former golden courtyard of the Temple of the Sun. The Spanish used stones from Sacsayhuaman, an Inca stronghold overlooking the city.
In the Urubamba Valley, or Sacred Valley, visitors can see the mysterious Moray Terraces and the pre-Inca Salt Mines of Maras. Ollantaytambo is a living Inca city and its towering ruins form the start of the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.
The long-lost Inca bastion was uncovered from the jungle in 1911. It remains a mystery how the Incas managed to stack the heavy granite blocks that make up the city’s buildings so precisely, at high altitude.
Little is also known about how the Incas turned a multi-lingual tribal region in an empire that is now known as one of the greatest civilizations in history.

Travel video about destination Cuzco in Peru.
Today a proud symbol of the Conquistadores, the historic Spanish conquerors, towers over the town of Cuzco in Peru’s mountains. Prior to the arrival of the Spanish, Cuzco lay at the centre of the Inca world and was the capital and religious centre of an immense kingdom. The unique combination of Spanish and Inca culture is apparent in the attractive architecture of the town. Typical characteristics of the houses are the overhanging tiled roofs and beautiful old balconies. One of the town’s most extravagant colonial buildings, the Compañía De Jesús Church in the Plaza De Armas Square, was built on mighty Inca foundations. Some of Cuzco’s streets still display the impressive and sturdy architecture of the Inca people. Attractive houses line the former procession roads of the Inca that led from the main square, today’s Plaza De Armas, to the Sun Temple. Although historic, Cuzco is full of mystery and speculation with regard to its famous Inca predecessors.

We traveled to the Bolivian altiplano plateau for the first pre-Inca cultures. We crossed Lake Titicaca, walked through the arid Peruvian coast, we visited the oldest archaeological sites, witness rituals led by shamans and know the looters and grave robbers. Know everything that happened centuries before the Incas to become the lords of the Andes absorbing all previous cultures.
00:50 From the ruins of the former settlements of the Inca and Tiwanaku cultures, on lake Titicaca, the Cayahualla priests worship Tata Inti, the Sun God.
The Tiwanaku culture appeared in about the fourth century AD, on the Bolivian plateau, just a few kilometres from the shores of Lake Titicaca.
04:13 On the islands of the Sun and Moon, we find numerous ruins of Tiwanaku origin, and which were later occupied by the Incas. The ancient mystical observatories are still used by the shaman in their ceremonies of invocation and meditation.
06:24 The majority of the coast of Peru is dry desert land. Nonetheless, this inhospitable land was the birth place of great civilisations, . this is the case of the Chimú culture who constructed irrigation channels, and created gardens in the desert. With their advanced techniques, they developed agricultural societies capable of supporting large numbers of inhabitants. The Chimú culture built cities like this one, Chanchán, perhaps the largest city in the world at the time, with around 100,000 inhabitants.
08:00 Still today, the fishermen along the coast of northern Peru use these boats, called “cattail horses”, to work the fishing grounds close to the shore. The cattail is a type of reed or bulrush which grows in the marshlands. Once it is cut and dried in the sun, it becomes tough and flexible, very resistant, and waterproof. At dawn, the fishermen set out to sea, expertly maintaining their balance as they ride the waves, using the most ancient of all surfing techniques.
11:02 The anthropomorphic face of the ‘Slitter of Men’s Throats’, at the Tomb, or ‘Huaca’ of the Moon, introduces us to the Moche culture, which flourished along these same coastal valleys, before the Chimú empire, from 200 BC to 700 AD.
15:22 The ‘San Pedro’ is a cactus which contains a powerful alkali with relaxant and hallucinatory properties mescaline, a mind-altering substance which induces a profound state of trance, also known as peyote. In the dark of night, and presided over by the shaman, rituals are held, at which they ingest the San Pedro.
21:34 The collection of over 16,000 skulls in the Archaeological museum in Lima makes it possible to study the pathology of these ancient cultures. These Nasca and Paraca skulls were subjected to a traumatic deformation, apparently simply for aesthetic reasons. A long, thin skull was a symbol of the upper class.
25:28 The discovery of the Tomb of the Lord of Sipan, a former president of Peru, was the most important archaeological discovery of America in the last decades.
30:00 These objects are made of gold, and come from the tomb of the Lord of Sipan. The police seized them from the grave robber Ernil Bernal, and they provided the clue for the archaelogist Walter Alva to discover this extraordinary Moche mausoleum.
30:32 The ‘Huaca Rajada’, the ‘Cracked Tomb’, is the burial complex of the Lord of Sipan. Excavations are still going on at this extraordinary find.
37:16 Every night, under cover of darkness, the robbers continue to find treasures, raiding the tombs of the Moche, Chimu, Chancay, Paracas, Nasca…The treasures they unearth are bought for pitiful sums by unscrupulous merchants, and sold on the black market.
41:00 We are leaving the coast and heading east, to discover the Chachapoya culture. We can see the ancient walls of their settlements along the cliffs and crags, totally inaccessible. Without a doubt, Kuelap is the most astonishing of all the Chachapoya cities. On the sacred mountain of La Petaca, there are over one hundred tombs in which they laid to rest their mummified dead. It is not known how they were able to construct them high up on the sheer rock face. The Chachapoya mummies are the product of a relatively sophisticated process.
49:21 And finally, the Incas arrived! Their Empire, the Tahuantinsuyo, extended from what is now Ecuador, to Argentina and Chile, absorbing all previous cultures. They became the masters of the Andes. They built astonishing cities, like the sacred Machupichu, abandoned since the arrival of the Spanish.

Renewed activity has again begun to appear across the Pacific, extending across the North American Craton.
A new article is circulating in the Main Stream Media regarind a "mega-quake" which could strike the Pacific Northwest Cascadia subduction zone. Fearmongering talk by the media saying Seattle will be destroyed, and everything West of I-5 from Washington to California would be destroyed.
http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2015/07/20/the-really-big-one
Some media even saying PEOPLE SHOULD MOVE from the West coast (smh + facepalm)!
https://www.facebook.com/ShepardSmith/videos/vb.131010790489/10153367050185490/?type=2&theater;
Move? Huh? Wow, really? Over reaction beyond measure.. instead of moving.. have an earthquake plan, and know what to do in low lying areas near the ocean!
http://www.dutchsinse.com
These reports (in my opinion) is highly fear laced, and should be decried for being alarmist in the outlandish media suppositions.
People talking about 100-600 foot tall waves, and M9.2 earthquakes along the Cascadia which will devastate the West coast?
While this is a remote possibility, we have a much greater chances of 6.0 - 8.0M earthquakes in the region which will NOT send giant waves to shore, but will cause water / food / power shortages.
______
We have a current forecast threat for 6.0M earthquake activity over the next 7 days to strike between North California and the Axial seamount off the shores of Washington State.
Also on watch, the far SW United States reaching into Baja Mexico -- watching for 4.0M to 5.0M activity over the next 7 days.
New 4.0M movement should begin again at the Oklahoma / Kansas fracking operations.
New 3.0M to 4.0M activity should hit the Southern United States again near Mississippi / Alabama.
New 3.0M to 4.0M activity should hit the far Northeast United States (Southeast Canada) near the Quebec border.
New 4.0M activity should strike at multiple volcanic locations in California, Nevada, Oregon, Arizona, and Utah.
Each location should see a small swarm which makes it stand out compared to single earthquake events elsewhere.
In the West Pacific, watch Central Japan along the Izu Trench, Southward to Okinawa. Watch Fiji to Soloman Island as well.. both areas should see renewed mid 6.0M range earthquakes.
Watch also for new deep earthquakes which could add larger earthquakes into the mix. Currently still just 1 deep earthquake in the past 7 days (as of July 17, 2015 1130am CDT).
Watch the Eastern India border for at least 1 5.0M event, could lead upwards of 6.0M .
Watch West of India at the Afghanistan Tajikistan border for at least one (most likely a swarm) of moderate to large earthquakes (West of Kathmandu).
Europe, Greece should see renewed mid M5.0 to low M6.0 activity.. English Channel should see at least one M3.0 to M4.0 event.. may be along the shores of France instead of the Channel, or could be just a bit North near London.
Central and South America -- be on watch for new developments near the border of Chile + Peru... could be a single larger event in the upper 6.0 range.
All of this should occur in the next 7-9 days from today (7/17/2015). Giving an additional 2 day window in case we see more deep earthquakes in the West Pacific.

Move?

After multiple M-class flares, and an Earth facing coronal hole -- we now see a flurry of new activity develop at a deep (and shallow) level across multiple regions stemming from the West Pacific across to adjacent plates.
The movement which has now struck in the Pacific Northwest, striking Central Washington State (instead of the offshore Juan Defuca zone as we were looking for) has hit the reset button for the United States / North American Craton.
Now we can expect a spreading out of new activity in the Southernmost portion of North America... mainly in Southern California, and along the Southern edge of the craton.
Renewed M4.0 activity should be expected to strike the Southern edge of the craton, including Colorado, Texas, and Oklahoma. All three areas should be struck by noteworthy movement near M4.0 due to the M4.3 along the Northwest edge of the craton (in Washington state) causing new pressure to be placed on the craton edge...
The pressure coming from the NW (Pacific NW) will cause new mid-M3.0 earthquakes in California / Nevada at the dormant volcanoes, and possible M3.0 activity in the far Northeast United states (again) reaching into New Brunswick / SE Quebec (again) over the next 7 days.
Japan, as shown in the video, is an area of particular concern due to the multiple M5.0 earthquakes striking in succession of one another across the entire region. Topping out with a M6.0 earthquake before I could even get this video full processed.
Japan should show larger movement over the next 7 days, larger than the M6.0 which just struck a few hours ago (September 1 2015)....... we need to watch particularly near the area shown in the video (Central Japan along the Izu trench).
Papua New Guinea, hopefully we'll only see a mid-M6.0 strike on land or near land in the next 7 days...
Watch the area further WEST from Papua New Guinea .. Sumatra Indonesia for the larger movement to the South this week.
Sumatra Indonesia is the silent spot which is clearly building into a larger event...
All the way South of New Zealand, be on watch for a moderate upper M5.0 to lower M6.0 to strike out to sea in the area shown in the video.
Mainly 4 small areas to watch in the West Pacific over the next 7 days. Coast of Japan at the Izu trench junction, Sumatra Indonesia near the India coast, Papua New Guinea near land, and South of New Zealand out to sea.
In the EAST Pacific... watch Southern California, and the North American Craton edge for noteworthy movement.
Central America.. watch near Panama / El Salvador for possible M6.0 activity (lower M6.0) over the next 7 days.
South America.. Coast of Peru into Bolivia .. watch near the coastline for possible lower M6.0 activity over the next 7 days.
Chile.. watch for a possible new blast at Villarica volcano or nearby the past eruption location from a few months ago. It has been quiet (volcanic eruption wise) in Chile over the past 2 months.. possible new eruptive activity will be reported in the next week if this forecast holds true.
In Europe, watch England! Upper M3.0 to lower M4.0 activity should strike the area based upon the movement in South Europe (North Italy struck by a M4.0 causing pressure to be placed on North Europe).
The Italy M4.0 should cause an additional similar earthquake to the North.. Possibly the North Sea into South UK... don't rule out the English Channel coast of France as the release point, but I'm leaning towards the North sea due to the location of the Italy M4.0 event.
Asia, now keep watch for possible upper M5.0 to lower M6.0 activity to strike near Nepal, possibly a few hundred miles NORTH of Nepal due to the location of the deep movement in the Pacific striking further North near Kamchatka Russia.
Thus, watch Nepal for a magnitude HIGHER than the deep Kamchatka events, which were upper M4.0 at a deep level... which means upper M5.0 to lower M6.0 would be coming in the area WEST of the deep movement along the Himalayan mountains going into Nepal / China / Russia - Siberia border regions.

In part 3 of my documentary I wake up at William B Douglas shelter, make my way to my food cache near Rt 11, then up and over Bromley Mountain. After that I meet up with Tom and his Notch....Bad Tom, No Good Tom, Mad Tom, I don't like Tom or his Notch :) The temperature went into the mid to upper 80's, hot and humid and I was out of water. I did pass by Peru Peak shelter and spent a memorable night at Griffith Lake. After an overnight visitor, I make my way along the trail enjoying spectacular weather....until I get to White Rocks Mountain. There I encounter a late afternoon thunderstorm that left my lips tingling and my heart racing. The night ends having met Tortoise and Hare at Greenwall Shelter, 2 AT thru hikers that are near the front of the pack for 2015 AT Thru Hikers. They are a very nice young couple, but...something was fishy about one of them. :)
Thanks for watching,
